Physical Activity Behaviour Of Paediatric Patients With Type 1 Diabetes, Freya Macmillan, Alison Kirk, Nanette Mutrie
Physical Activity Behaviour Of Paediatric Patients With Type 1 Diabetes, Freya Macmillan, Alison Kirk, Nanette Mutrie
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Type 1 diabetes is a common chronic condition in children and young people and its prevalence is increasing worldwide. Paediatric patients with Type 1 diabetes can have poorer health and overall quality of life than their non-diabetic peers and some studies suggest that they may be less active than their non-diabetic peers. Regular physical activity has many potential health benefits for any young person but can also benefit areas of health specifically important for those with Type 1 diabetes. In addition being regularly active can reduce the risk of developing diabetic complications. Promoting physical activity participation in this population is …

Predicting Exercise Adherence In College Students Using A Self-Determination Theory Framework, Megan M. Clarke
Predicting Exercise Adherence In College Students Using A Self-Determination Theory Framework, Megan M. Clarke
Master's Theses
College is a pivotal time for weight gain and unhealthy behavior changes in many young adults. Decreases in physical activity are common in this age group and likely contribute to the 1.6 to 1.8 kg weight gain that is often observed in the first year of college. Identifying groups of students who are at high-risk for decreasing or discontinuing physical activity may help develop more targeted interventions. The present study explored physical activity patterns in the first semester of college and examined predictors of exercise decreases to levels below recommended daily values within a Self-Determination Theory framework. Incoming freshman (n=174; …

Into The Tangled Web: K-12 Educators, Free Speech Rights, And Social Media, John David Andrews
Theses and Dissertations
Much attention has recently been given to K-12 educators and their use of social media. This quantitative study surveyed a targeted sample (n = 543) of known social media users to learn about K-12 educators’ use of social media, their legal knowledge of the First Amendment as it relates to free speech and education, and their dispositions toward the First Amendment. Survey respondents self-reported levels of social media use, completed a legal knowledge section, and responded to a series of items used to gauge their disposition toward the First Amendment. These were analyzed through various demographic and contextual factors in …
Dietary Protein Influences Paracellular Calcium Transport: Two Molecular Targets, Belinda M. Kotler
Dietary Protein Influences Paracellular Calcium Transport: Two Molecular Targets, Belinda M. Kotler
Master's Theses
The effect of dietary protein on bone health remains controversial. We have shown that increasing dietary protein increases calcium absorption in both humans and rats with no change in bone resorption. We used a rat model in which dietary protein increases intestinal calcium absorption and whole body calcium retention, to explore the molecular basis for this effect. Female Sprague-Dawley rats were fed a low (5%) or high (40%) protein diet for 7 days. On day 7, duodenal mucosa was harvested and total RNA isolated. Microarray analyses using these RNA samples identified 208 genes whose expression was at least 1.5 fold …
A Longitudinal Study Of The Effect Of At Birth Adoptions On Anxiety, Stress Hormones And Adolescent Alcohol Intake: A Nonhuman Primate Model, Whitney Faith Maxwell
A Longitudinal Study Of The Effect Of At Birth Adoptions On Anxiety, Stress Hormones And Adolescent Alcohol Intake: A Nonhuman Primate Model, Whitney Faith Maxwell
Theses and Dissertations
Adopted individuals have an increased risk for a variety of psychopathological disorders. Studies of the effects adoption in humans are difficult to perform because of the difficulty separating genetic risk and treatment effects. This is a developmental study investigating the effects of at birth adoption using a nonhuman primate model. Three experimental paradigms were used to assess maternal treatment, stress-related behavior, and physiology late in infancy and again later in life. Rhesus monkeys were reared for their first six months of life by either their biological mother or an unrelated, lactating adult female. Adoptions occurred immediately following birth. At six …

Understanding Free Radicals: Isolating Active Thylakoid Membranes And Purifying The Cytochrome B6f Complex For Superoxide Generation Studies, Jason Stofleth
The Journal of Purdue Undergraduate Research
All life persists in an environment that is rich in molecular oxygen. The production of oxygen free radicals, or superoxide, is a necessary consequence of the biogenesis of energy in cells. Both mitochondrial and photosynthetic electron transport chains have been found to produce superoxide associated with cell differentiation, proliferation, and cell death, thereby contributing to the effects of aging. Aerobic respiration in mitochondria consumes oxygen, whereas photosynthesis in chloroplasts or cyanobacteria produces oxygen. The increased concentration of molecular oxygen may serve to allow greater availability for the production of superoxide by cytochrome bc complexes in photosynthetic membranes compared to those …
Bovine Nutritional Needs: Digestibility Of Dry And Ensiled Forages When Feeding Young Dairy Heifers, Shirley Nigaglioni
Bovine Nutritional Needs: Digestibility Of Dry And Ensiled Forages When Feeding Young Dairy Heifers, Shirley Nigaglioni
The Journal of Purdue Undergraduate Research
The diets fed to growing animals are very important to ensure that young animals have the proper nutrients available for growth. When feeding dairy heifers, a farmer’s goal is to feed a very digestible diet that will provide nutrients to keep dairy heifers healthy and allow them to grow faster, while spending less money on feed. The objective of this study was to determine whether feeding heifers diets containing dry or ensiled forage (haylage) improved digestibility. Our hypothesis was that incorporating hay into the diet of 16-week-old dairy heifers would provide a more digestible source of nutrients. For this study, …

Soil Biochemical Changes Induced By Poultry Litter Application And Conservation Tillage Under Cotton Production Systems, Regine Mankolo, Chandra Reddy, Zachary Senwo, Ermson Nyakatawa, Seshadri Sajjala
Agricultural and Environmental Sciences Faculty Research
Problems arising from conventional tillage (CT) systems (such as soil erosion, decrease of organic matter, environmental damage etc.) have led many farmers to the adoption of no-till (NT) systems that are more effective in improving soil physical, chemical and microbial properties. Results from this study clearly indicated that NT, mulch tillage (MT), and winter rye cover cropping systems increased the activity of phosphatase, β-glucosidase and arylsulfatase at a 0–10 cm soil depth but decreased the activity of these enzymes at 10–20 cm. The increase in enzyme activity was a good indicator of intensive soil microbial activity in different soil management …

Hunter-Gatherer Energetics And Human Obesity, Herman Pontzer, David A. Raichlen, Brian M. Wood, Audax Z. P. Mabulla, Susan B. Racette, Frank W. Marlowe
Publications and Research
Western lifestyles differ markedly from those of our hunter-gatherer ancestors, and these differences in diet and activity level are often implicated in the global obesity pandemic. However, few physiological data for hunter-gatherer populations are available to test these models of obesity. In this study, we used the doubly-labeled water method to measure total daily energy expenditure (kCal/day) in Hadza hunter-gatherers to test whether foragers expend more energy each day than their Western counterparts. As expected, physical activity level, PAL, was greater among Hadza foragers than among Westerners. Nonetheless, average daily energy expenditure of traditional Hadza foragers was no different than …
The Biomechanical Implications Of An Intrinsic Decompressive Pre-Load On A Posterior Dynamic Stabilization System, Jeffrey Ellis Harris
The Biomechanical Implications Of An Intrinsic Decompressive Pre-Load On A Posterior Dynamic Stabilization System, Jeffrey Ellis Harris
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this research was to investigate the influence of applying an intrinsic decompressive pre-load to a particular dynamic stabilization device on the biomechanical response of the lumbar spine. The FlexSPAR, which supports this ability, was used as a test case. A finite element model of a full lumbar spine was developed and validated against experimental data, and tested in the primary modes of spinal motion. The model was used to compare five lumbar spine test cases: healthy, degenerate, implanted with a pre-loaded device, implanted with a device without a pre-load, and implanted with rigid fixators. Results indicated that …

A Comparison Of Methods Of Analysis To Control For Confounding In A Cohort Study Of A Dietary Intervention, Esinhart Hali
Theses and Dissertations
Comparing samples from different populations can be biased by confounding. There are several statistical methods that can be used to control for confounding. These include; multiple linear regression, propensity score matching, propensity score/logit of propensity score as a single covariate in a linear regression model, stratified analysis using propensity score quintiles, weighted analysis using propensity scores or trimmed scores. The data were from two studies of a dietary intervention (FIBERR and RNP). The outcome variable was change from baseline to one month for eight outcome measures; fat, fiber, and fruits/ vegetables behavior, fat, fiber, and fruits/vegetables intentions, fat and fruits/vegetables …
Oxidative Status And Life History Trade-Offs In The Cooperatively Breeding Florida Scrub-Jay, Rebecca Suzanne Heiss
Oxidative Status And Life History Trade-Offs In The Cooperatively Breeding Florida Scrub-Jay, Rebecca Suzanne Heiss
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Oxidative damage has been linked to several degenerative diseases and, as such, the oxidative status of an organism has been widely used as a proxy for health state. Organisms able to resist attack by reactive oxygen species, or those with high levels of antioxidants, are typically assumed to be in better condition (i.e., better able to withstand oxidative damage to biomolecules). Little work, however, has focused on whether the oxidative status of an organism (particularly oxidative damage in free-living species) influences life history decisions. My research examined the interplay between oxidative status and life history characteristics in a free-living bird, …

Dietitian’S Problem Solving Knowledge To Promote And Support Breastfeeding, Cassandra L. Dytrych
Department of Nutrition and Health Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
As a result of ongoing efforts in the U.S. to promote breastfeeding as the normal way to nourish an infant, breastfeeding initiation rates are higher than they have been in decades. As the experts on food and nutrition through the lifecycle, registered dietitians (RDs) should be knowledgeable to promote and support breastfeeding. It is not well known if RDs have this knowledge. The purpose of this study was to determine the current knowledge of RDs about breastfeeding, the types of professional opportunities RDs have to promote and support breastfeeding, and the level of education RDs have to deal with breastfeeding …

Videofluoroscopic Analysis To Determine The Effects Of Thickened Liquid On Oropharyngeal Swallowing Function In Infants With Respiratory Compromise, Memorie Mintz Gosa
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
In clinical practice, infants who present with dysphagia during instrumental assessment are frequently placed on a diet that includes thickened liquids. There is scant empirical evidence available to support this common treatment practice. Studies that have previously attempted to evaluate the effectiveness of thickened liquids as a treatment option for infants with dysphagia have been limited by poorly defined physiologic parameters and small, heterogenous populations of study. The purpose of this dissertation was to systematically evaluate the effects of thickened liquids in a homogeneous sample of infants through retrospective analysis of archived videofluoroscopic swallow studies. Fifteen different temporal and physiologic …
