Macrophage Autophagy In Immunity To Cryptococcus Neoformans And Candida Albicans, Magdia De Jesus Sep 2012

Macrophage Autophagy In Immunity To Cryptococcus Neoformans And Candida Albicans, Magdia De Jesus

Biomedical Sciences Faculty Scholarship

Autophagy is used by eukaryotes in bulk cellular material recycling and in immunity to intracellular pathogens. We evaluated the role of macrophage autophagy in the response to Cryptococcus neoformans and Candida albicans, two important opportunistic fungal pathogens. The autophagosome marker LC3 (microtubule-associated protein 1 light chain 3 alpha) was present in most macrophage vacuoles containing C. albicans. In contrast, LC3 was found in only a few vacuoles containing C. neoformans previously opsonized with antibody but never after complement-mediated phagocytosis. Disruption of host autophagy in vitro by RNA interference against ATG5 (autophagy-related 5) decreased the phagocytosis of C. albicans and the …

Creatine Monohydrate: Daily Blood Pressure Monitoring During The Loading Phase Of Supplementation, Gary Kastello, Emily Asuncion, Michael Boyd, Natalie Exsted

Student Research and Creative Projects 2012-2013

Creatine monohydrate (CrM) is considered a safe nutritional supplement. The loading phase of CrM supplementation is associated with shifts in total body water and plasma volume that may affect blood pressure. However, few studies have measured blood pressure during the loading phase of CrM supplementation. The aim of this study was to determine if CrM supplementation induces a daily blood pressure increase during the supplementation-loading phase. Participants’ blood pressure, shoulder extension active ROM, arm girth, arm volume, plasma volume, blood volume, hematocrit, and hemoglobin were measured daily for five days of supplementation (45 gd-1 for 5d) of either CrM (n=12) …

Development Of Real-Time Pcr Protocol To Detect Tick-Borne Diseases, Michael Lehrke, Kimberly Bates

Student Research and Creative Projects 2012-2013

Lyme disease, caused by the genospecies complex Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato, is the most common tick-borne infection in the Northern Hemisphere and is the most common arthropod-borne disease in the United States. The disease is particularly endemic in Southeast Minnesota and West Central Wisconsin. Lyme disease can have a substantial impact on quality of life as disseminated forms of the disease can affect the heart, joints, and nervous system. It is therefore important for health care professionals to diagnose and treat patients with Lyme disease in a timely fashion. To do so, these professionals need to be informed about disease …

Epidemiological Ins And Outs Of Helicobacter Pylori: A Review, Jibran Sualeh Muhammad, Syed Faisal Zaidi, Toshiro Sugiyama

Department of Biological & Biomedical Sciences

Helicobacter pylori infection is now recognised as a worldwide problem. It is the most common cause of chronic gastritis, and is strongly linked to peptic ulcer disease and gastric cancer. A comprehensive understanding of epidemiological ins and outs of H. pylori infection is very important in solving the patho-physiological enigma and might help in leading towards better management and prognosis of infection. This article presents a review of the literature on the epidemiology of H. pylori infection from 2006 to 2011. The authors used Medical Subject Heading (MeSH) terms 'Helicobacter' with 'epidemiology,' 'transmission' or 'risk factor' to search PubMed database. …

A Phenomenology Of Fitness From Consumption To Virtuous Production, Ross Neville Sep 2012

A Phenomenology Of Fitness From Consumption To Virtuous Production, Ross Neville

Theses, Doctoral

Although our imagination as policy-makers, legislators, academics, and members of the general public has been captured by the promise of fitness, what is meant by it and whether or not its individualising emphasis is a good thing is much less clear. In response to this question of cultural significance, this thesis provides a phenomenology of fitness. It does so in two important senses and in the context of two distinct parts.
The first half of this thesis (Chapters One and Two) is given to the task of bracketing the natural attitude with respect to fitness; that is, contextualising the question …

Non-Diabetic Renal Disease In Patients With Type-2 Diabetes Mellitus, Sonia Yaqub, Waqar Kashif, Syed Ather Hussain Sep 2012

Non-Diabetic Renal Disease In Patients With Type-2 Diabetes Mellitus, Sonia Yaqub, Waqar Kashif, Syed Ather Hussain

Section of Nephrology

Diabetic nephropathy (DN) is the leading cause of end-stage renal disease in diabetics worldwide, yet most patients with type-2 diabetes mellitus are not formally evaluated with a renal biopsy. The diagnosis is almost always based on clinical grounds. A wide spectrum of non-diabetic renal disease (NDRD) is reported to occur in patients with type-2 diabetes. It has been estimated that up to one-third of all diabetic patients who present with proteinuria are suffering from NDRD. The aim of this analysis was to evaluate the prevalence and etiology of NDRD in patients with type-2 diabetes. We retrospectively reviewed the medical records …

Resource-Based Habitat Associations In A Neotropical Liana Community, James W. Dalling, Stefan A. Schnitzer, Claire Baldeck, Kyle E. Harms, Robert John, Scott A. Mangan, Elena Lobo, Joseph B. Yavitt, Stephen P. Hubbell

Faculty Publications

Summary: 1.Lianas are a conspicuous element of many tropical forests, accounting for up to 40% of woody stem density and 20% of species richness in seasonal forests. However, lianas have seldom been surveyed at sufficiently large spatial scales to allow an assessment of the importance of habitat variables in structuring liana communities. 2.We compare the association patterns of 82 liana species and an equivalent sample of tree species on the 50ha Forest Dynamics Project plot on Barro Colorado Island, Panama, with topographic habitat variables (high and low plateau, slope, swamp and streamside), and thirteen mapped soil chemical variables. In addition, …

Floating Wetland Systems For Nutrient Removal In Stormwater Ponds, Ni-Bin Chang, Martin Wanielista, Manoj Chopra Sep 2012

Floating Wetland Systems For Nutrient Removal In Stormwater Ponds, Ni-Bin Chang, Martin Wanielista, Manoj Chopra

BMP Trains Research and Publications

Wet detention ponds are frequently used in stormwater management systems as part of a treatment train for attenuation of flow and removal of pollutants. Wet detention ponds designed and operated according to commonly used standards and specifications remove nutrients but the removal of nitrogen has remained low, about 30-40% concentration reduction on a yearly basis. A Floating Treatment Wetland (FTW) composed of selected plants suspended in a wet detention pond was proposed in this research to improve the removal of nutrients before discharge from a pond.

A Conserved Two-Component Regulatory System, Pids/Pidr, Globally Regulates Pigmentation And Virulence-Related Phenotypes Of Burkholderia Glumae, Hari Sharan Karki, Inderjit Kaur Barphagha, Jong Hyun Ham

Faculty Publications

Burkholderia glumae is a rice pathogenic bacterium that causes bacterial panicle blight. Some strains of this pathogen produce dark brown pigments when grown on casamino-acid peptone glucose (CPG) agar medium. A pigment-positive and highly virulent strain of B.glumae, 411gr-6, was randomly mutagenized with mini-Tn5gus, and the resulting mini-Tn5gus derivatives showing altered pigmentation phenotypes were screened on CPG agar plates to identify the genetic elements governing the pigmentation of B.glumae. In this study, a novel two-component regulatory system (TCRS) composed of the PidS sensor histidine kinase and the PidR response regulator was identified as an essential regulatory factor for pigmentation. Notably, …
