School of Public Health Faculty Publications
BACKGROUND: It has been estimated that there are approximately 12 million cancer survivors in the United States. Continued smoking after a cancer diagnosis is linked to adverse effects among cancer survivors on overall survival, treatment effectiveness, and quality of life. Little is known about who is more likely to quit smoking after his/her cancer diagnosis. The objective of this study is to evaluate factors associated with smoking cessation in cancer survivors, which to date has not been well studied. METHOD: The National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 1999-2008 surveys were used in this study. A total of 2,374 cancer …

What The Wild Things Are: A Critique On Clare Palmer’S “What (If Anything) Do We Owe Wild Animals?”, Joel P. Macclellan
What The Wild Things Are: A Critique On Clare Palmer’S “What (If Anything) Do We Owe Wild Animals?”, Joel P. Macclellan
Between the Species
In this critique of “Clare Palmer’s “What (if anything) do we owe wild animals?”, I develop three points. First, I consider the case study which opens her essay and argue that that there are good empirical reasons to think that we should assist domesticated horses and not wild deer. Then, I critique Palmer’s claim that “wildness is not a capacity”, arguing that wildness connotes certain capacities which wild animals generally have and which domesticated animals generally lack. Lastly, I develop what I call the “supererogation problem” against Palmer’s preferred contextualist view, claiming that while the contextualist view doesn’t obligate us …

Nursing In Sendafa, Ethiopia: A Collaboration Of Mission, Mentoring, And Medicine, Dawn Becker
International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)
Ethiopia is the second poorest nation in the world. Ninety percent of the population lives in poverty, over 50% on less than one dollar a day. The village of Sendafa has about 15,000 people, most of whom have never seen a nurse or doctor. The primary health issues in Ethiopia continue to be contaminated water, poor sanitation, HIV/AIDS, poor nutrition, and inadequate access to medical care. Since 2007, York County nurses and doctors have partnered with Ethiopian doctors to provide a one-week medical clinic in the village, along with supplying year-long medications for HIV/AIDS and water-born diseases. Ethiopian nursing students …

Valid Items For Screening Dysphagia Risk In Stroke Patients: A Systematic Review, Pamela Willson
International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)
Purpose: Early detection of dysphagia in acute stroke is critical as it allows for immediate intervention, thereby reducing mortality, morbidity, length of hospitalization, and healthcare costs. These findings have led to the recommendation to screen swallowing ability in all acute stroke patients, regardless of stroke severity. A systematic review of the literature was undertaken to determine the evidence-based validity of dysphagia screening items using instrumental evaluation as the reference standard. Methods: Four databases from 1985 through March, 2011 were searched using the terms cerebrovascular disease, stroke deglutition disorders, and dysphagia. Eligibility criteria were: homogeneous stroke population, comparison to instrumental examination, …
