PURPOSE: At rest and during a tactical pistol competition classifier, heart rate variability (HRV) time-domain, high frequency (HF), low frequency (LF), total power (TP), and inter-beat-interval (IBI) measurements were examined in 28, healthy subjects (37 ± 11 yr old, 180 ± 7 cm, 90.6 ± 16.9 kg) for correlations to performance. METHODS: Resting measurements were taken supine in a quiet, dimmed room, during metronomic breathing. The shooting task consisted of three stages, comprised of several strings each. The strings were initiated by a starting buzzer and involved several tactical maneuvers, including holster draws, engaging multiple targets, firing on the move, …
Life History Of Stranded Bottlenose Dolphins (Tursiops Truncatus) In Virginia, Margaret Cook Lynott
Life History Of Stranded Bottlenose Dolphins (Tursiops Truncatus) In Virginia, Margaret Cook Lynott
Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations
Little is known about the life history and overall ecology of bottlenose dolphins that strand in Virginia. In this study, I examined archived life history samples and stranding data from bottlenose dolphins found in Virginia waters to (1) develop growth curves based on ages from sectioned teeth, (2) document characteristics of male and female reproductive organs, and (3) define the relationship between age/length and presence of neonatal characteristics during the first year of life. The Gompertz growth model provided the best fit of growth data for stranded T. truncatus in Virginia. Length at birth and asymptotic length for males were …

Journal of Extension
New Extension state specialists face many uncertainties when beginning to work in their new position, especially when it involves a state unfamiliar to them. Literature reviews may not provide the latest and clearest picture of the needs and challenges in the state. Furthermore, the between-county variation of issues may differ greatly. The study reported here illustrates how a survey of Home Economics county agents may benefit a new Extension specialist and provide a picture of Extension Home Economics needs and challenges specific to New Mexico.

Responding To Health Care Reform: Mobilizing Extension, Bonnie Braun
Responding To Health Care Reform: Mobilizing Extension, Bonnie Braun
Journal of Extension
The 2010 Affordable Care Act provides an opportunity for Extension. Research shows that most Americans do not understand the law's provisions and are not comfortable making health insurance purchase decisions. By January 2014, nearly 30 million Americans will be making enrollment decisions; an estimated 180 million will be reenrolling in health plans. We have a teachable moment to both educate and measure the impact of that education. At issue is the question of the extent to which we in Extension are willing and able to mobilize to address the opportunity.

Edible Marijuana: A New Frontier In The Culinary World, Ariella H. Wolkowicz
Honors Theses - Providence Campus
Cannabis, commonly known as marijuana, has a rich history as a source of fiber, food and medicine (Li 437). Since 1785, physicians and scientists alike have worked to discover the active chemical components and medical effectiveness of this plant (Touw 2; Aldrich). Despite its complicated legal history, marijuana has retained a place culturally and, in some countries, scientifically as an effective medical agent. As a medically edible ingredient, cannabis has also been more recently heralded as a new, even cutting edge flavor, opening a new frontier to the culinary community.
After the isolation of the main active ingredient in cannabis, …

Recommendations For Online Training In Hospitality Organizations, Geoffrey L. Wellen
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Delivering consistent customer experiences is often a key driver of customer satisfaction in the leisure and hospitality industry. However, consistency can be compromised if new and existing employees are not adequately prepared for their roles and duties. The leisure and hospitality industry hires many new staff each year due to general industry growth and employee turnover. Training and development is therefore important for the industry to meet staffing requirements and to deliver consistent customer experiences. The rapid and significant developments in online training and education since mid 1990 have increased the size and knowledge of the candidate pool available to …

Genetically Modified Organisms As A Potential Solution For Decreasing Hunger In Developing Nations: An Ethical Paradox, Rachel Sherman
Genetically Modified Organisms As A Potential Solution For Decreasing Hunger In Developing Nations: An Ethical Paradox, Rachel Sherman
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
I first became aware of and interested in genetically modified organisms (GMOs) in the “Politics of Food in America” course I took spring semester of 2012, my junior year at the University of Texas at Austin. I was intrigued by the fact that such a concept was so unfamiliar to the public, yet genetically engineered products were in our everyday foods. Though I received a basic introduction to GMOs through my course, I was curious to learn more about the regulatory practices of GM crops and the political relationships sustained by GM firms and government agencies in the United States. …
