Patrick Muller: Latitudinarianism And Didacticism In Eighteenth~ Century Literature: Moral Theology In Fielding, Sterne, And Goldsmith: Book Review, Christopher J. Fauske

Religion in the Age of Enlightenment

Latitudinarianism is one of those terms modern authors use when discussing disputes within the eighteenth-century Church of England, often without providing a definition of the term itself. Liberal and conservative, Whig and Tory, are unhelpful in identifying a person's place on a religious spectrum that was not necessarily political. Orthodoxy and heterodoxy are germane only when considering debates that crossed denominational lines-or, at the very least, threatened to cause schism. So scholars often use the term "latitudinarian" by default.

Stanley Hauerwas’S Influence On Catholic Moral Theology, Jana Marguerite Bennett Jan 2012

Stanley Hauerwas’S Influence On Catholic Moral Theology, Jana Marguerite Bennett

Theology and Religious Studies Faculty Publications

One might begin considering the reception of Stanley Hauerwas’s work in Catholic moral theology by asking: why did both Commonweal and First Things opt to publish reviews of Hauerwas’s memoir Hannah’s Child? What is it about Hauerwas’s theological discussion of his own work that engages an educated Catholic audience of magazines putatively representing both ends of the spectrum? It is not only that both journals actively seek engagement with Protestant voices; nor is it only that Hauerwas has a degree of renown, thanks to Time magazine. It is also exactly what Peter Steinfels alludes to in his review, that Hauerwas …

Moral Conversion, Liturgy And The Preface To Eucharistic Prayer For Reconciliation Ii, Thomas Ryan Jan 2012

Moral Conversion, Liturgy And The Preface To Eucharistic Prayer For Reconciliation Ii, Thomas Ryan

Theology Papers and Journal Articles

Anecdotal evidence suggests that, amongst the Eucharistic Prayers in the Roman Catholic liturgy, the laity find the Second Eucharistic Prayer for Reconciliation the most attractive. This article attempts to address the question: what is there about this Prayer that is so appealing and why? The focal point is the first thing people hear in this Eucharistic Prayer, namely, the Preface. There seems to be something special, if not unique, about the Preface to EP RII.

This article will focus mainly on the Preface of EP RII in terms of its theme, tone, tempo and as a template. In preparing to …

Interpreting Material Cooperation As A Function Of Moral Development To Guide Ministry Formation, Steven Squires Jan 2012

Interpreting Material Cooperation As A Function Of Moral Development To Guide Ministry Formation, Steven Squires

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

While not exactly back room political bargaining, the traditional use of cooperation has been by moral theologians attempting to define the level of cooperation for a particular situation. This chosen definition, in turn, may help focus the range of appropriate actions in response to the situation's circumstances. In this customary usage, an organization's associates (employees) may assist the implementation of relevant responses to a cooperation analysis, whether the issue is clinical or organizational in nature. They have not been integral to the decision-making process - until now. Cooperation has been the proverbial candle under the bushel (Matthew 5:15). This paper …

The Harold J. Berman Lecture: Religious Freedom--A Second-Class Right?, Mary Ann Glendon Jan 2012

The Harold J. Berman Lecture: Religious Freedom--A Second-Class Right?, Mary Ann Glendon

Emory Law Journal

Although the Bill of Rights does not establish a hierarchy among the values it seeks to protect, Supreme Court decisions over time have classified certain rights as essential to a fundamental scheme of ordered liberty. The prominent place of the First Amendment's provisions protecting religious freedom on this "Honor Roll of Superior Rights" has seldom been openly challenged.

Finding The Original Meaning Of American Criminal Procedure Rights: Lessons From Reasonable Doubt's Development, Randolph N. Jonakait Jan 2012

Finding The Original Meaning Of American Criminal Procedure Rights: Lessons From Reasonable Doubt's Development, Randolph N. Jonakait

Articles & Chapters

Lessons can be learned about finding the original meaning of American criminal procedure rights by an examination of the development of the reasonable doubt standard. This is for a number of reasons. First, the status of the reasonable doubt standard seems secure. No debate questions the constitutional requirement that an accused can only be convicted if the crime is proven beyond a reasonable doubt. The standard’s original meaning can be explored uncolored by the partisanship often engendered when present seekers of original meaning hope to define a new contour to a constitutional guarantee. Furthermore, serious scholars have studied the reasonable …

Human Dignity And Health Law: Personhood In Recent Bioethical Debates, Zachary R. Calo Jan 2012

Human Dignity And Health Law: Personhood In Recent Bioethical Debates, Zachary R. Calo

Scholarly Works

This Article considers how the idea of human dignity has shaped, and been shaped by, recent bioethical debates, particularly concerning the issue of genetic engineering and enhancement. While the language of human dignity has long had a role in bioethics, the issue of genetic manipulation has raised anew fundamental questions about the nature of personhood and the meaning of dignity. Particular attention is given to Ronald Green’s “Babies by Design,” George Kateb's “Human Dignity,” Gilbert Meilaender's “Neither Beast Nor God: The Dignity of the Human Person,” Robert George's and Christopher Tollefsen's “Embryo: A Defense of Human Life,” Michael Sandel’s “The …

Organization Of Islamic Knowledge In Libraries: The Role Of Classification Systems, Haroon Idrees Jan 2012

Organization Of Islamic Knowledge In Libraries: The Role Of Classification Systems, Haroon Idrees

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Libraries deal with recorded knowledge. Classification systems play a fundamental role in the organization, display, retrieval and access of the knowledge and materials in libraries. During the last one and a half century, formal classification systems and standards have been developed to replace the previous generic categorization. Such the systems are very famous, known and used by the libraries internationally. Some of these international standard systems include: Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC); Charles Ammi Cutter’s Expansive Classification (EC); The Subject Classification of James Duff Brown (SC); American Library of Congress Classification (LCC); Universal Decimal Classification (UDC): Henry E. Bliss’ Bibliographic Classification …
