Enzyme Therapy In Oncology Care: A Clinical Scholarship Project, Julie Penick Feb 2012

Enzyme Therapy In Oncology Care: A Clinical Scholarship Project, Julie Penick

Dissertations

Studies worldwide indicate that oral enzyme therapy (OET) can prevent or reduce the side effects associated with standard oncology care. Yet use of OET is not common in the United States. The ultimate aim of the proposed project is to improve the quality of life of women with breast cancer who are on standard chemotherapy protocols. Achieving this goal can be facilitated by implementation of the proposed feasibility project designed to: (a) enhance the knowledge of oncology care providers and women with breast cancer on use of OET in conjunction with standard oncology care, (b) assess the attitudes of oncology …

Making Key Clinical Assessment Tools Accessible For Global Nursing Practice, Lucia Gonzales, Rose Mary Gee, Anne Floyd Koci

Biennial Convention (CONV)

Purpose: Taking up a global leadership role by providing hands-on nursing on international medical missions, inspires one to enhance giving and leading to yet another level. It is proposed that research incorporated into nursing science be shared with our healthcare colleagues in the Philippines and Ukraine. The purpose of this research is to prepare brief assessment tools for use in global populations. Assessment tools have provided valuable insights into our patients' health outcomes following nursing interventions, and in uncovering underlying reasons for complex symptomology. The KOCI Marginality Index-5 assesses marginality that is significantly positively correlated with anxiety and depression. Additionally, …

Fear Of Facebook: Private Ordering Of Social Media Risks Incurred By Healthcare Providers, Nicolas P. Terry Jan 2012

Fear Of Facebook: Private Ordering Of Social Media Risks Incurred By Healthcare Providers, Nicolas P. Terry

Nebraska Law Review

The last two years have seen important quantitative and qualitative shifts in social media use patterns as well as a rapid deployment of private ordering: social media policies and other contractual constructs emanating from physicians, professional organizations, employers, and educators. Yet, these private, often contractual attempts to regulate online interactions or social media conduct are not all benign, themselves creating ethical or legal risk. In this Article, I concentrate on social media and these new risk management constructs and do so primarily from the perspective of physicians. Part II provides updated statistics on Internet use by healthcare workers and explores …

Book Review: Phoenix: The Life Of Norman Bethune, David Webster Jan 2012

Book Review: Phoenix: The Life Of Norman Bethune, David Webster

China Beat Blog: Archive 2008-2012

Millions of Chinese have memorized Mao Zedong’s 1939 lines “In Memory of Norman Bethune,” written soon after the Canadian surgeon’s death amidst the war against Japan. As a result, Bethune remains the best-known Canadian in China, still outstripping comedian Dashan (Mark Rowswell).

“Comrade Bethune’s spirit, his utter devotion to others without any thought of self, was shown in his great sense of responsibility in his work and his great warm-heartedness towards all comrades and the people,” Mao wrote, extolling Bethune’s “spirit of absolute selflessness.” If Bethune was pure selflessness and internationalist heroism after coming to China, it was only after …

The Influence Of International Service-Learning On Transcultural Self-Efficacy In Baccalaureate Nursing Graduates And Their Subsequent Practice, Roxanne Amerson Jan 2012

The Influence Of International Service-Learning On Transcultural Self-Efficacy In Baccalaureate Nursing Graduates And Their Subsequent Practice, Roxanne Amerson

Publications

The purpose of this study was to explain how participation in an international service-learning project during a community health course influenced transcultural self-efficacy of baccalaureate nursing graduates following graduation and their subsequent clinical practice. A qualitative, explanatory case study was used to conduct telephone interviews with 14 nursing graduates, who had previously participated in international trips to Ecuador or Guatemala. A constant comparative analysis revealed themes related to increased self-efficacy in the cognitive, practical, and affective learning dimensions of cultural competence. Additional themes focused on the importance of experiential learning, the provision of culturally congruent care, and a commitment to …

Household Survey To Evaluate The Zambia-Led Prevention Initiative: Baseline Report, Zambia-Led Prevention Initiative

HIV and AIDS

With an estimated HIV prevalence of 14.3 percent among men and women age 15–49, Zambia is one of the sub-Saharan African countries most affected by the HIV and AIDS pandemic. The Zambia-led Prevention Initiative Program (ZPI) was developed by a consortium led by FHI360, with the Population Council as the evaluation partner. This study determined baseline levels of key indicators related to HIV, gender-based violence, and reproductive health. Additionally, the baseline findings provide critical insights into key areas for interventions in Zambia and highlights variability in the populations across provinces and between males and females that provide valuable guidance for …

Developing An Evidence-Based Clinical Resource For Registered Nurses Serving On Medical Missions, Natalie Masco Dixon

Nursing Faculty/Staff Publications

The purpose of this poster is to summarize a clinical scholarship project in which needs of rural Zambians who seek healthcare at short-term medical clinics were identified. Using this information, a clinical resource guide was developed based on published best practice guidelines and available resources to educate medical mission nurses and assist in providing quality, culturally competent care. Implementation of educational materials specific to nurses and to the population served, has the ability to impact the quality of care provided through medical missions. This project has the potential to lead to a more all-inclusive resource for nurses who take part …
