Alteration Of Behavior By Desert Bighorn Sheep From Human Recreation And Desert Bighorn Sheep Survival In Canyonlands National Park: 2002 - 2010, Kanalu K. Sproat Dec 2012

Alteration Of Behavior By Desert Bighorn Sheep From Human Recreation And Desert Bighorn Sheep Survival In Canyonlands National Park: 2002 - 2010, Kanalu K. Sproat

Theses and Dissertations

Human encroachment into wilderness areas can influence the persistence of wildlife populations by decreasing and degrading habitat, displacement, and decreasing survival. For bighorn sheep (Ovis canadensis), some human activities are detrimental, causing both physiological stress and habitat abandonment. Between 1979 and 2000, human recreation has increased over 300% in areas occupied by desert bighorn sheep (O. c. nelsonii) in southeastern Utah. We investigated if an increase in human activity in areas used by bighorns affected their behavior. We observed 34 bighorn sheep using focal-animal sampling for >14 hrs to compare time spent grazing and scanning between areas of high and …

Effective Collaboration Through Multi User Cax By Implementing New Methods Of Product Specification And Management, Vonn L. Holyoak Dec 2012

Effective Collaboration Through Multi User Cax By Implementing New Methods Of Product Specification And Management, Vonn L. Holyoak

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis presents a new design process in which design specifications and task distribution are determined from a parallel multi user prospective. Using this method, projects are more easily decomposed into tasks that can be performed concurrently, thus decreasing the design time. Also, a framework is provided to determine the correct distribution of available talent and stakeholders that can be utilized on a given project. The research suggests that by involving the necessary stakeholders in a multi user setting, changes can be made quickly and without additional approval wait time. By including individuals from the various areas of required talent, …

Seismic Response Of Stiffening Elastic Systems, Andrew Scott Morgan Dec 2012

Seismic Response Of Stiffening Elastic Systems, Andrew Scott Morgan

Theses and Dissertations

Traditional seismic load resisting systems in buildings are designed to undergo inelastic deformations in order to dissipate energy, resulting in residual displacements. This work explores an approach to eliminate these residual displacements. The systems investigated have low initial stiffness which increases at a predefined displacement, and are therefore called stiffening elastic systems. This thesis begins with an examination of single-degree-of-freedom stiffening elastic systems. A case study is presented which suggests that the benefits from stiffening elastic behavior may be limited to systems which would have long periods if designed traditionally. A thorough parameter study is also presented which indicates the …

Native American Students' Experiences Of Cultural Differences In College: Influence And Impact, Leslie Elizabeth Clark Dec 2012

Native American Students' Experiences Of Cultural Differences In College: Influence And Impact, Leslie Elizabeth Clark

Theses and Dissertations

The culture of most colleges and universities is very different for Native American students with close ties to their traditional communities. "Traditional," in a Native American sense, means multiple interconnections of emotional, physical, intellectual, and spiritual identity that combine to define expectations for the Native American way. This traditional cultural perspective is often in conflict with college cultures where typically only the academic or social aspects of identity are addressed. Research on college students of several ethnicities has found that the experience of post-secondary education can change individuals' attitudes, values, and behaviors. However, none of these studies focused on the …

School Integration And College Outcomes: Does Attending A Racially Diverse High School Positively Influence College Attendance And College Prestige?, Leila Jussara Nielsen Dec 2012

School Integration And College Outcomes: Does Attending A Racially Diverse High School Positively Influence College Attendance And College Prestige?, Leila Jussara Nielsen

Theses and Dissertations

Early studies of school integration are limited to examining the impact of court-ordered integration on student outcomes. As districts are released from their court orders, the context within which integration operates has changed. As such, this study tests whether voluntary integration is a useful intervention for equalizing students' access to post-secondary education. I utilize data from the graduating class of 1997 from Jefferson County Public School District in Kentucky. Results indicate that student GPA is the largest and most influential predictor of both college attendance and prestige. Furthermore, results indicate that school diversity influences GPA differentially depending on students' race …

Acid-Base Catalysis In Proton-Coupled Electron Transfer Reactions (Pcet): The Effects Of Brönsted Bases On The Oxidation Of Glutathione And Hydroquinone, Ramos Jonnathan Medina

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis presents the results and discussion of the investigation of the effects of Brönsted bases on the kinetics and thermodynamics of two proton-coupled electron transfer processes: the mediated oxidation of glutathione and the electrochemical oxidation of hydroquinone. Proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) is the name given to reactions that involve the transfer of electron(s) accompanied by the exchange of proton(s). PCETs are found in many chemical and biological processes, some of current technological relevance such as the oxygen reduction reaction in fuel cells, which involves the transfer of four electrons and four protons (4e-, 4H+); or the splitting of water …

Experimenting With Anomaly Detection By Mining Large-Scale Information Networks, A. Taleb-Bendiab Dec 2012

Experimenting With Anomaly Detection By Mining Large-Scale Information Networks, A. Taleb-Bendiab

Australian Information Security Management Conference

Social networks have formed the basis of many studies into large networks analysis. Whilst much is already known regarding efficient algorithms for large networks analysis, data mining, knowledge diffusion, anomaly detection, viral marketing, to mention. More recent research is focussing on new classes of efficient approximate algorithms that can scale to billion nodes and edges. To this end, this paper presents an extension of an algorithm developed originally to analyse large scale-free autonomic networks called the Global Observer Model. In this paper, the algorithm is studied in the context of monitoring large-scale information networks. Hence, taking into account the size …

The Reception, Incorporation And Employment Of Informatin Operations By The Australia Defence Force: 1990-2012, Jeff Malone

Australian Information Warfare and Security Conference

The paper investigates the Australian Defence Force’s (ADF) approach – understood here as the reception, incorporation and operational employment – to military information operations (IO), from 1990 to 2012. The paper identifies key characteristics of the ADF’s approach to IO, and proposes explanatory factors to account for the specific form the ADF’s approach to IO has been manifested. The paper concludes with predictions regarding the future form of IO within the ADF, in the context of the increasing significance of social media, the upcoming 2013 Defence White Paper (WP13) and the US ‘pivot’ to the Asia-Pacific region. The paper is …

The 2012 Analysis Of Information Remaining On Computer Hard Disks Offered For Sale On The Second Hand Market In The Uae, Andy Jones, Thomas Martin, Mohammed Alzaabi

Australian Digital Forensics Conference

The growth in the use of computers in all aspects of our lives has continued to increase to the point where desktop, laptop, netbook or tablet computers are now almost essential in the way that we communicate and work. As a result of this, and the fact that these devices have a limited lifespan, enormous numbers of computers are being disposed of at the end of their useful life by individuals or/and organisations. As the cost of computing has reduced, the level of ‘consumerisation’ has increased together with the requirement for mobility. This has led to an increasing use of …

E-Learning Modules

Children with special health care needs (CSHCN) are increasingly prevalent in US hospitals. The pediatric hospitalist is often the primary provider of inpatient care for these patients. However, exposure to this patient population during training varies from provider to provider. No published educational curricula are specific to the inpatient care of this population. The purpose of this project is to build a multi-modal educational curriculum for providers with the overall goal of improving inpatient care for this at-risk population.

This curriculum is primarily composed of a series of topic-specific learning modules. Asynchronous learning modules, utilized appropriately, can augment learning by …

Block-Scoped Access Restriction Technique For Html Content In Web Browsers, Timothy Watt Dec 2012

Block-Scoped Access Restriction Technique For Html Content In Web Browsers, Timothy Watt

Theses

Web sites, web browsers, web site authors, web component authors, and end users interact in a complicated environment with many recognized and unrecognized trust relationships. The web browser is the arena in which many important trust relationships interact, thus it bears a considerable burden in protecting the interests and security of web end users as well as web site authors. Existing proposals, draft standards, implemented features, and web application techniques go a long way towards allowing rich and compelling content interactions, but they do not provide for rich, mutually-distrusting content to be safely embedded in a single page. This proposal …

Cyberterrorism: Addressing The Challenges For Establishing An International Legal Framework, Krishna Prasad Dec 2012

Cyberterrorism: Addressing The Challenges For Establishing An International Legal Framework, Krishna Prasad

Australian Counter Terrorism Conference

The increase of international cyberterrorism in recent years has resulted in computer-based criminal activities that generate worldwide fear, destruction and disruption. National laws and policies that address cyberterrorism are mainly limited to developed nations and are not cohesive in managing 21st century cyberterrorism. Given the absence of an international legal framework to address cyberterrorism, authorities and governments around the world face extreme challenges in finding and prosecuting those responsible for cyberterrorism. This article argues for the need for a cohesive international legal framework; highlights key elements to establish an effective international legal framework; and identifies existing international treaties and cross-border …

Al-Jihad Fi Sabilillah: In The Heart Of Green Birds, Robyn Torok Dec 2012

Al-Jihad Fi Sabilillah: In The Heart Of Green Birds, Robyn Torok

Australian Counter Terrorism Conference

With an increasing focus on lone-wolf operations, al-Qaeda is becoming increasingly focussed on its internet discourses and propaganda. One of its most significant discourses is the importance of jihad and martyrdom in carrying out a terrorist attack. This study looks at Facebook pages and profiles and examines the discourses presented in relation to jihad and martyrdom. Three important concepts including their justification are considered: Al-Jihad fi Sabilillah (just fight for the sake of Allah), Istishhad (operational heroism of loving death more than the West love life) and Shaheed (becoming a martyr). Results supported previous studies indicating the strong seductive nature …

The 2012 Investigation Into Remnant Data On Second Hand Memory Cards Sold In Australia, Patryk Szewczyk, Krishnun Sansurooah

Australian Digital Forensics Conference

This study investigates the remnant data on memory cards that were purchased through Australian second hand auctions sites in 2012. Memory cards are increasing in capacity and are commonly used amongst many consumer orientated electronic devices including mobile phones, tablet computers, cameras and multimedia devices. This study examined 78 second hand memory cards. The investigation shows that confidential data is present on many of the memory cards and that in many instances there is no evidence to suggest that the seller attempted to erase data. In many instances the sellers are asking the buyer to erase the data on the …
