An Exploration Into The Reality Of Media Perceptions: The Depictions Of Women Public Relations Practitioners In Reality Television, Cherese E. Colston Oct 2012

An Exploration Into The Reality Of Media Perceptions: The Depictions Of Women Public Relations Practitioners In Reality Television, Cherese E. Colston

McNair Scholars Research Journal

Reality television is a media staple for this generation. Reality programs including Jersey Shore, Keeping Up with the Kardashians, and Teen Mom 2 are among the most watched programs in the United States. In the last five years, reality television has highlighted professions including Public Relations. However, these new reality shows depict an unrealistic image of female practitioners in the PR field. These negative portrayals have been analyzed in film, yet there is a lack of research in regards to reality television. The purpose of this study is to analyze the portrayal of women in the Public Relations …

The Extent Of Political Participation In The United States Among Latino Non-Citizens And Citizens, Shanilinin M. Calderon Oct 2012

The Extent Of Political Participation In The United States Among Latino Non-Citizens And Citizens, Shanilinin M. Calderon

McNair Scholars Research Journal

In the United States, Hispanics, or Latino Americans, are individuals with Mexican, Puerto Rican, Cuban, or other Latin American origin. Undocumented and documented Latinos are two of the fastest growing populations in the United States. However, this demographic is still underrepresented in American politics today. The increase in this growing population is due to “push and pull” factors that attract immigrants; some of these factors include escaping from poverty in search for a better life, and better opportunities for employment. Factors contributing to lower voting turnouts include the belief that the Latino vote will not make a difference, mistrust in …

A Model For Designing M-Agriculture Applications For Dairy Farming, Amos Gichamba, Ismail A. Lukandu Oct 2012

A Model For Designing M-Agriculture Applications For Dairy Farming, Amos Gichamba, Ismail A. Lukandu

The African Journal of Information Systems

In the recent past, developing countries have experienced major technological advancements including high mobile phone penetration. With the implementation of innovative technological solutions (e.g. mobile-based systems in key economic activities such as agriculture), there is need to develop models that software developers and researchers can use to design solutions. This paper aims to study the implementation of mobile systems in agriculture and presents a model for designing such applications. This study shows that models exist for general mobile applications design and development, although none specifically suits mobile agriculture applications. A model for designing and implementing M-Agriculture applications is presented. The …

Assessing The Causal Effect Of Policies: An Approach Based On Stochastic Interventions, Iván Díaz, Mark J. Van Der Laan Oct 2012

Assessing The Causal Effect Of Policies: An Approach Based On Stochastic Interventions, Iván Díaz, Mark J. Van Der Laan

U.C. Berkeley Division of Biostatistics Working Paper Series

Stochastic interventions are a powerful tool to define parameters that measure the causal effect of a realistic intervention that intends to alter the population distribution of an exposure. In this paper we follow the approach described in D\'iaz and van der Laan (2011) to define and estimate the effect of an intervention that is expected to cause a truncation in the population distribution of the exposure. The observed data parameter that identifies the causal parameter of interest is established, as well as its efficient influence function under the non parametric model. Inverse probability of treatment weighted (IPTW), augmented IPTW and …

Symbolic Interactionism And Moral Hazards In Higher Education, Louella Moore Oct 2012

Symbolic Interactionism And Moral Hazards In Higher Education, Louella Moore

Administrative Issues Journal

Public colleges and universities today are more than institutions of academic study. They play a role in the economic and social life of their communities by engaging in partnerships aimed at enhancing their scope and brand image. This paper suggests these partnered activities do more than just manage costs and replace state support during economic downturns; the activities are also central to managing the image and political scope of the institution. This paper presents an exploratory, multi-disciplinary examination of the market forces and potential moral hazards inherent in hybrid public/private partnerships in higher education. Agency and symbolic interaction concepts are …

A Comparative Analysis Of The Efficacy Of Nasa Media Relations Strategies And The Relationship To U.S. Space Policy, Julian Gibson Oct 2012

A Comparative Analysis Of The Efficacy Of Nasa Media Relations Strategies And The Relationship To U.S. Space Policy, Julian Gibson

Theses and Dissertations

The purposes for this comparative analysis were to (a) compare the efficacy of NASA media relations strategies according to NASA's stakeholders and (b) reveal if these media relations strategies have a causal relationship or correlation with U.S. space policy. NASA employees reflected positive responses to questions related to the efficacy of NASA media relations strategies and the overall communications philosophy of the organization. Journalists who report on NASA through traditional and online channels had mixed responses toward the organizations media relations efforts during crisis situations like the Columbia and Challenger shuttle disasters. However, journalists were very supportive of NASA's dissemination …

Synthesis And Characterizations Of Amorphous Carbon Nanotubes/Cadmium Selenide Quantum Dots Hybrid Materials / Tan Kim Han, Kim Han Tan Oct 2012

Synthesis And Characterizations Of Amorphous Carbon Nanotubes/Cadmium Selenide Quantum Dots Hybrid Materials / Tan Kim Han, Kim Han Tan

Student Works (2010-2019)

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have attracted great attention. Most of the works being conducted in the past mainly focus on the crystalline CNTs. In this work, amorphous CNTs (α-CNTs) were synthesized successfully via a simple chemical technique at 230 °C in a short period of time. Surface morphological studies revealed that the asprepared nanotubes present in straight tubular structures with open ends, having certain dimensions (80 - 110 nm for outer diameter; 45 - 65 nm for inner diameter; 8 - 10 μm for length). Both structural and elemental studies confirmed that the nanotubes were made of amorphous carbon. Acidic purification …
