Coalition Portfolios And Interest Group Influence Over The Policy Process, Michael T. Heaney, Geoff M. Lorenz Oct 2012

Coalition Portfolios And Interest Group Influence Over The Policy Process, Michael T. Heaney, Geoff M. Lorenz

Working Papers

While not all interest groups participate in coalitions, some groups join multiple coalitions to form portfolios of coalition memberships. We test hypotheses that the composition of coalition portfolios increases the influence of interest groups over public policy when: (1) the number of coalitions in a group’s portfolio gets larger; (2) the average size of the coalitions in a group’s portfolio gets larger; and (3) a group’s portfolio improves its position within the overall network of coalitions. We evaluate these hypotheses using a study of 115 interest groups involved in the debate over the Medicare Modernization Act of 2003. The results …

I'Ll Never See The Stars Again, Office Of Arts + Cultural Programming, Peak Performances At Montclair State University

2012-2013 Exceptions Rule: No Compromise

Six singers and five instrumentalists tell the story of a group of Italian refugees in a series of vignettes expressing the comedy of love and the despair of betrayal. The musicians of ARTEK have built a reputation for the vitality of their spirited performances of baroque music. In I’ll Never See the Stars Again, the lush music of Claudio Monteverdi and his contemporaries is re-imagined as a theater piece staged by Martin Platt, founding artistic director of the Alabama Shakespeare Festival. In an extremely entertaining fashion, ARTEK proves the journey is just as important as the destination.

A Third Sector Imaginary, Roger A. Lohmann Oct 2012

A Third Sector Imaginary, Roger A. Lohmann

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

A basic theoretical challenge for third sector scholars today is to speak in general and consistent terms about the institutional and normative orders forming outside households, markets and governments in numerous countries, regions and urban centers everywhere. The third sectors of the world have formed in light of a range of distinctive local conditions, including history, culture, law and other factors. A growing international group of scholars has produced a convincing, although limited and partial model of the third sector based in the linked concepts of nonprofit organization, nonprofit sector and non-distribution constraints. We will need to pay greater heed …

Batchloading Serials And Other E-Resources: An Introductory Workshop, Bonnie Parks Oct 2012

Batchloading Serials And Other E-Resources: An Introductory Workshop, Bonnie Parks

OLAC Conferences

Electronic resources are now a key component of many libraries. We have long known that catalog records for individual resources facilitate discovery and access. However, as libraries continue to increase their acquisition of electronic resources by purchasing packages of serials, ebooks, and streaming media content, cataloging individual titles isn’t always a possibility. Instead, libraries often rely upon outside sources for their MARC records and load records in large sets. This workshop introduces those new to batch record loading to some practical tools and workflow strategies to manage their records more effectively. Topics covered include: what to look for in vendor …

Regulation Of Cytochrome C Oxidase Composition By Oxygen And Oxidative Stress, Jingjing Liu Oct 2012

Regulation Of Cytochrome C Oxidase Composition By Oxygen And Oxidative Stress, Jingjing Liu

Open Access Dissertations

Cytochrome c Oxidase (COX) is a multimeric mitochondrial protein complex acting as the terminal enzyme of mitochondrial respiratory chain (MRC). It catalyzes the transfer of electrons from cytochrome c to molecular oxygen that is reduced to water. The efficiency of the electron transfer can be modulated in response to oxygen availability by differential expression and assembly into the holoenzyme of subunit isoforms-Cox5a/Cox5b. COX subunit 5 (Cox5) is the homologue of subunit 4 (COX4) in mammals. In both organisms it exists in two isoforms, whose expression is regulated by oxygen. In yeast grown in normoxia, most COX holoenzyme contains the isoform …

School Safety Planning: Barriers To Implementation Perceived By District Leadership And First Responders, David J. Alba, Robert K. Gable Oct 2012

School Safety Planning: Barriers To Implementation Perceived By District Leadership And First Responders, David J. Alba, Robert K. Gable

K-12 Education

This study explored the perceptions of district and first responder leadership (N = 6) with respect to school crisis preparedness. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with a stratified purposeful sampling of school, police, and fire/rescue personnel who were primarily responsible for the planning, training, and implementation of district safety policies. Overarching themes were: desire for coherence among procedures with guidance from the state level; and, ambiguity of roles and responsibilities in the event of a crisis. Participants believed the onus to foster inter-agency partnerships was the responsibility of either the state, or the partnering agencies. In addition, while the importance …

Pedaling Poverty Through Pennies, Dimes, And Disaster, Nicholas D. Hartlep Oct 2012

Pedaling Poverty Through Pennies, Dimes, And Disaster, Nicholas D. Hartlep

NERA Conference Proceedings 2012

This paper synthesizes and categorizes important social justice scholarship into a useable taxonomy that social justice workers can use in their personal and professional spheres of influence. The present paper discusses the idea that although social justice activities and/or projects may originate with noteworthy missions and motivations, unless their creators are vigilant, service projects have the potential to deteriorate into myth-making initiatives that reinforce the problems that they originally intended to ameliorate.

The Effect Of Technology On A Student's Motivation And Knowledge Retention, Mark Granito, Ellina Chernobilsky

NERA Conference Proceedings 2012

The purpose of this study was to examine the impact that technology has on a student's motivation to learn new information and retain said information. The procedure involved the completion of two projects over the course of a nine-week study. One group was to create traditional storybook projects. A second group was to complete computer-based projects. A third group was given the choice of which project to complete. A pre-post-retention test, Likert scale surveys, and post project interviews were used to collect the data. The results of this study support the idea that when given the choice of project, students …

Value Added Teacher Evaluation – A Trojan Horse; Principals Attitudes Towards Teacher Empowerment, Kevin J. Walsh Oct 2012

Value Added Teacher Evaluation – A Trojan Horse; Principals Attitudes Towards Teacher Empowerment, Kevin J. Walsh

NERA Conference Proceedings 2012

The value-added teacher evaluation model may require supervisory leader behaviors inconsistent with the beliefs of principals and teachers. Educators who are forced to behave in ways contrary to their basic beliefs about how teachers grow and develop, become frustrated, devalued and candidates for flight from the profession. New Jersey principals and aspiring supervisors were surveyed using the Supervisory Behavior Inventory to gain insight into the existing supervisory beliefs and associated practices prior to a New Jersey mandated implementation of a value-added model that will be in place by September 2013. Analysis of results leads to questionable leadership implications.
