Nonlinear Dynamics Of The Atomic Force Microscope At The Liquid-Solid Interface, Daniel Kiracofe, Arvind Raman
Nonlinear Dynamics Of The Atomic Force Microscope At The Liquid-Solid Interface, Daniel Kiracofe, Arvind Raman
Birck and NCN Publications
The measurement of intermolecular forces at the liquid-solid interface is key to many studies of electrochemistry, wetting, catalysis, biochemistry, and mechanobiology. The atomic force microscope (AFM) is unique in its ability to measure and map these forces with nanometer resolution using the oscillating sharp tip of an AFM cantilever. These surface forces are only measured by observing the changes they induce in the dynamics of the resonant AFM probe. However, AFM cantilever dynamics at this interface can be significantly different when compared to air/vacuum environments due to the nature of nanoscale forces at the interface and the low-quality factors in …

Combining Behavioral Weight Loss Treatment And A Commercial Program: A Randomized Clinical Trial, Angela Marinilli Pinto, Joseph L. Fava, Debra A. Hoffmann, Rena R. Wing
Publications and Research
Commercial weight loss programs such as Weight Watchers (WW) offer widely recognized and accessible treatment, but typically produce weight losses that are modest relative to professionally delivered programs. This study tested the hypothesis that a novel weight loss approach that combined the fundamental components of professionally delivered behavioral weight loss (BWL) treatment with the existing WW program would produce better weight losses than WW alone; no differences were expected between the novel treatment and BWL alone. Participants were 141 overweight and obese adults (90% women, 67% non-White, mean age = 49.7 ± 9.2 years, mean BMI = 36.2 ± 5.5 …

Salinity Of The Little Colorado River In Grand Canyon Confers Anti-Parasitic Properties On A Native Fish, David L. Ward
Salinity Of The Little Colorado River In Grand Canyon Confers Anti-Parasitic Properties On A Native Fish, David L. Ward
Western North American Naturalist
Water in the Little Colorado River within Grand Canyon is naturally high in salt (NaCl), which is known to prohibit development of external fish parasites such as Ich (Ichthyophthirius multifiliis). The naturally high salinity (>0.3%) of the Little Colorado River at baseflow may be one factor allowing survival and persistence of larval and juvenile humpback chub (Gila cypha) and other native fishes in Grand Canyon. We compared salinity readings from the Little Colorado River to those reported in the literature as being effective at removing protozoan parasites from fish. In laboratory tests, 10 juvenile roundtail …

Theses
This thesis explores solutions to the problem young adults face when relocating on a budget. The target age range of 20 to 30 year-olds face multiple hurdles when it comes to their nomadic existence. On average this age group relocates once per year; they are a consumerist population often defining themselves by their possessions; and are often under tight budget constraints. Since nomadic cultures to the current day, relocation has allowed individuals access to better things and the essentials of life. The difference being that nomadic cultures had fewer possessions which were designed for easy packing and carrying, where as …
Large Scale Archaeological Satellite Classification And Data Mining Tools, Kelly Canham
Large Scale Archaeological Satellite Classification And Data Mining Tools, Kelly Canham
Theses
Archaeological applications routinely use many different forms of remote sensing imagery, the exception being hyperspectral imagery (HSI). HSI tends to be utilized in a similar fashion as multispectral imagery (MSI) or processed to the point that it can be utilized similarly to MSI, thus reducing the benefits of HSI. However, for large scale archaeological surveys, HSI data can be used to differentiate materials more accurately than MSI because of HSI's larger number of spectral bands. HSI also has the ability to identify multiple materials found within a single pixel (sub-pixel material mixing), which is traditionally not possible with MSI. The …
Community Knowledge Sharing Wiki For Higher Education Information Technology Professionals, Joseph M. Karam
Community Knowledge Sharing Wiki For Higher Education Information Technology Professionals, Joseph M. Karam
Theses
Information Technology (IT) professionals in higher education regularly collaborate in communities of practice. The community knowledge sharing wiki is a collaboration tool IT professionals utilize as a centralized platform to improve knowledge and share best practices. The goals of the wiki are to improve the knowledge of IT professionals and the services of IT organizations in higher education. The primary benefit of IT professionals establishing a knowledge sharing wiki is having a centralized, structured, searchable, and expert reviewed resource for IT related service areas. As this wiki was further developed, measurements were to be defined to regularly report and review …

Fostering Change In Organizational Culture Using A Critical Ethnographic Approach, Rosemary A. Brander, Margo Patterson, Yolande E. Chan
Fostering Change In Organizational Culture Using A Critical Ethnographic Approach, Rosemary A. Brander, Margo Patterson, Yolande E. Chan
The Qualitative Report
Healthcare organizations are striving to meet legislated and public expectations to include patients as equal partners in their care, and research is needed to guide successful implementation and outcomes. The current research examined the meaning of customer service as related to the culture of care relationships within a Canadian hospital in southeastern Ontario. The goals were to better understand these expectations, develop shared meanings and influence cultural change from the perspective of the organization’s employees about their interactions with patients, families and work colleagues, and to generate ideas and groundswell for change. An ethnographic approach within the critical research paradigm …

Javalite - An Operational Semantics For Modeling Java Programs, Saint Oming'o Wesonga
Javalite - An Operational Semantics For Modeling Java Programs, Saint Oming'o Wesonga
Theses and Dissertations
Java is currently a widely used programming language. However, there is no formal definition of Java's semantics. Consequently, Java code does not have a universal meaning. This work discusses recent attempts to formalize Java and presents a new formalism of Java called Javalite. In contrast to common approaches to formalization, Javalite is purely syntactic in its definition. Syntactic operational semantics use the structure of the language to define its behavior. Javalite models most Java features with notable exceptions being threads, reflection, and interfaces. This work presents an executable semi-formal model of Javalite in PLT Redex. Being executable means that Javalite …

“Don’T Blow A Bunch Of Cash On Vegas:” An Event Study Analysis Of President Obama’S Public Statements On Las Vegas, Paul Gift, Michael J. Gift
UNLV Gaming Research & Review Journal
In February of 2009 and 2010, President Obama made what some in the media and gaming industries construed as negative public statements regarding trips to Las Vegas. Some claimed these statements could easily be interpreted as a suggestion that companies and individuals avoid casino areas, thus doing additional harm to their surrounding economies during already tough times. In this paper, we use event study methodology to examine stock market reactions of U.S. casino-related businesses to the president’s statements. We find that President Obama’s statements were followed by significant negative abnormal returns in the segment of companies targeted more towards conventions, …

Las Vegas And Houston: Global Command Centers In The Sun Belt, Bo J. Bernhard, Mikael Ahlgren
UNLV Gaming Research & Review Journal
Apart from their notoriously hot summers, Las Vegas, Nevada and Houston, Texas appear to have little in common. Upon further scrutiny, however, the two cities have followed strikingly parallel trajectories. As a hub of commercial gaming today, Las Vegas faces challenges comparable to the obstacles Houston encountered in the 1970s and 1980s as a hub of oil and energy. The story of Houston since this downtime reflects a stunning transformation into a modern-day international city, and one that both parallels and portends a new Las Vegas. In this article, we argue that Houston provides a viable model for Las Vegas …
