New Media And Ethno-Politics In The Guinean Diaspora, Mohamed S. Camara
New Media And Ethno-Politics In The Guinean Diaspora, Mohamed S. Camara
Humanities & Communication - Daytona Beach
This paper discusses the resurgence of ethno-politics in Guinea in conjunction with the reintroduction of multiparty politics after three decades of single-party and military rule, and the trend’s multilayered repercussion into the Guinean Diaspora of North America. It further examines the principal ways in which ethno-regionalist organisations populating that Diaspora use and misuse new media outlets (web sites, web radio stations, and blogs) in order to promote the political agenda of their respective ethno-political elites. The article scrutinises the deficit of professionalism that characterises the performance of most of those publishing on such web sites and broadcasting on such stations and …

Teaching Statistical Research Methods To Graduate Students: Lessons Learned From Three Different Degree Programs, Ozgur Ekmekci, Adrienne Hancock, Susan S. Swayze
Clinical Research and Leadership Faculty Publications
This paper examines the challenge of teaching statistical research methods in three master’s degree programs at a private university based in Washington, DC. We, as three professors teaching at this university, discuss the way we employ innovative approaches to deal with this challenge. We ground our discussion within the theoretical framework of problem-based learning and adult learning principles. We provide brief descriptions of our research methods courses to demonstrate how an instructor can facilitate learning of new knowledge and applications in a content area often considered intimidating by students. We also highlight similarities across the three different courses we teach …

This article posits that the emerging employer-imposed health insurance fat tax regime subverts the public policy goal of achieving actual health and evidences two important systemic phenomena: first, that these fat taxes force fat people to cover their fatness, and second, that current legal structure permitting this practice ensures that society continues to cover up its anti-fat bias. American society, through the health care system and other mechanisms, has created a fat-thin dichotomy within which thin is good and fat is bad. Recently, employers began reinforcing this dichotomy by imposing on employees whose weight renders them “obese” on the Body …
American Skin: Dispensing With Colorblindness And Critical Mass In Affirmative Action, Deirdre Bowen
American Skin: Dispensing With Colorblindness And Critical Mass In Affirmative Action, Deirdre Bowen
Faculty Articles
This exploratory empirical work examines whether students of color enjoy the benefits articulated by the U.S. Supreme Court in the Grutter decision that rationalized the continuation of affirmative action based on diversity interests. Specifically, the Court stated that affirmative action was permissible because students of all backgrounds would increase their racial understanding and decrease their racial stereotyping of minorities. Neither side was happy with the decision—both skeptical that such benefits could transpire for minority students. Yet, in the heat of continuing debate, neither group has empirical support for their arguments until now.
Using survey data of over 370 under-represented minority …
Don’T Blame Crawford Or Bryant: The Confrontation Clause Mess Is All Davis’S Fault, Deborah Ahrens, John Mitchell
Don’T Blame Crawford Or Bryant: The Confrontation Clause Mess Is All Davis’S Fault, Deborah Ahrens, John Mitchell
Faculty Articles
In Michigan v. Bryant, a dying victim lying in a parking lot provided responding officers with the identity of the man who shot him. In determining whether the subsequent use of the deceased declarant’s statement at trial violated the Confrontation Clause, the Bryant Court applied the testimonial versus nontestimonial analysis established in the Court’s previous decision, Crawford v. Washington. Holding that testimonial hearsay covered statements involving past events, while nontestimonial statements were directed at an “ongoing emergency,” the Bryant Court applied a multi-factor, totality of the circumstances analysis and found that the deceased declarant’s identification had been directed …
Gringo Alley, Steven W. Bender
Gringo Alley, Steven W. Bender
Faculty Articles
As a tribute to the late Professor Keith Aoki, this piece engages an uncompleted collaboration with Professor Aoki sketching through art and words a profoundly dystopian immigration nightmare centered in the Southwestern United States. In detailing the plot and themes of the borderlands gauntlet of "Gringo Alley," the article confronts some of the disturbing recent developments in immigration policy that approach or match the horrors imagined in fictional Gringo Alley. Finally, the article draws on science fiction influence and demographic reality to suggest a frightening future for all U.S. residents -- the prospect of economic collapse in a landscape of …

The Romantic Collective Author, Margaret Chon
The Romantic Collective Author, Margaret Chon
Faculty Articles
Although the romantic collective author is a much more elusive creature than its romantic individual counterpart, it can be discerned amidst the proliferation of expression on the Internet. This article first outlines the ways in which the romantic author effect operates through both its genius and its arbiter prongs within collaborative authorship practices in digital networks. It next turns to scientific collaboration, where this author effect is attenuated, to assess whether scientific authorship practices might contribute to a more realistic and less romantic understanding of expressive authorship practices. A subsequent case study of collaborative digital authorship by Wikipedia contributors uncovers …
Powerful Buyers And Merger Enforcement, John B. Kirkwood
Powerful Buyers And Merger Enforcement, John B. Kirkwood
Faculty Articles
Although large buyers like Walmart and Tyson Foods occupy important positions in the American economy, antitrust law remains focused on the conduct of sellers. Moreover, when mergers of buyers have been challenged, the cases have been based on a single theory – that the merger would create a dominant buyer (or group of buyers) that would exploit small, powerless suppliers. Most powerful buyers, however, face suppliers with power of their own, and in such cases, the buyers exert “countervailing power,” which can also be anticompetitive. Yet buyer mergers that reduce competition through the exercise of countervailing power are not addressed …

The Guardians Of Knowledge In The Modern State: Post’S Republic And The First Amendment, David M. Skover, Ronald K. L. Collins
The Guardians Of Knowledge In The Modern State: Post’S Republic And The First Amendment, David M. Skover, Ronald K. L. Collins
Faculty Articles
Collins and Skover’s essay examines Yale Law School Dean Robert Post’s recent book, Democracy, Expertise, and Academic Freedom: A First Amendment Jurisprudence for the Modern State (Yale, 2012). Collins and Skover describe and examine Dean Post’s dichotomy between the realm of “democratic legitimation,” where the First Amendment should offer its strongest protections, and the realm of “democratic competence,” where the First Amendment should yield to the findings of knowledgeable experts. Questioning the theoretical premises of Dean Post’s book, they argue that a “harm principle” may better explain much of the First Amendment doctrine that Post attempts to reconcile with his …

Role, Identity, And Lawyering: Empowering Professional Responsibility, Natasha Martin
Faculty Articles
This piece was written for a program held by the American Association of Law Schools Section on Law and Humanities, "Excavating and Integrating Law and Humanities in the Core Curriculum," on January 5, 2012.The Professional Responsibility course has the potential to have the greatest impact on our students' futures in the profession. Paradoxically, however, it remains one of the most undervalued courses in most law school curricula. The complexity of teaching Professional Responsibility is well documented by scholars. Most teachers in this area, novices and veterans alike, acknowledge the challenge of teaching a course whose subject matter and application is …
In Vitro Antimicrobial Effect Of A Cold Plasma Jet Against Enterococcus Faecalis Biofilms, Chunqi Jiang, Christoph Schaudinn, David E. Jaramillo, Paul Webster, J. William Costerton
In Vitro Antimicrobial Effect Of A Cold Plasma Jet Against Enterococcus Faecalis Biofilms, Chunqi Jiang, Christoph Schaudinn, David E. Jaramillo, Paul Webster, J. William Costerton
Bioelectrics Publications
The hypothesis that a cold plasma jet has the antimicrobial effect against Enterococcus faecalis biofilms was tested in vitro. 27 hydroxyapatite discs were incubated with E. faecalis for six days to form a monoculture biofilm on the disc surface. The prepared substrata were divided into three groups: the negative control, the positive control (5.25% NaOCl solution), and the plasma treatment group. Resultant colony-forming unit counts were associated with observations of bacterial cell morphology changes using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Treatment of E. faecalis biofilm with the plasma and 5.25% NaOCl for 5min resulted in 93.1% and 90.0% kill (P < 0.0001), respectively. SEM detected that nearly no intact bacteria were discernible for the plasmaexposed HA disc surfaces. The demonstrated bactericidal effect of the plasma with direct surface contact may be due to the enhanced oxidation by the locally produced reactive plasma species.

Nanosecond pulsed electric fields (nsPEF) induce apoptotic pathways in human cancer cells. The potential therapeutic effective of nsPEF has been reported in cell lines and in xenograft animal tumor model. The present study investigated the ability of nsPEF to cause cancer cell death in vivo using carcinogen-induced animal tumor model, and the pulse duration of nsPEF was only 7 and 14 nano second (ns). An nsPEF generator as a prototype medical device was used in our studies, which is capable of delivering 7-30 nanosecond pulses at various programmable amplitudes and frequencies. Seven cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma cell lines and five …

Anchoring Of Drifting Spiral And Scroll Waves To Impermeable Inclusions In Excitable Media, Christian W. Zemlin, Arkady M. Pertsov
Bioelectrics Publications
Anchoring of spiral and scroll waves in excitable media has attracted considerable interest in the context of cardiac arrhythmias. Here, by bombarding inclusions with drifting spiral and scroll waves, we explore the forces exerted by inclusions onto an approaching spiral and derive the equations of motion governing spiral dynamics in the vicinity of inclusion. We demonstrate that these forces nonmonotonically depend on distance and can lead to complex behavior: (a) anchoring to small but circumnavigating larger inclusions; (b) chirality-dependent anchoring.

In Time, my BFA solo exhibition, was an installation of three four-foot-by-six-foot looping video projections shone directly onto the walls of Meek Hall's Gallery 130. create this body of work, I performed as both photographer and subject. Performance in its simplest form exists completely autonomous of technology, and when the photographer or videographer documents a performance s/he produces something and more tangible than simply engaging in the performance's live exchange. As I work with time-based media, the idea of time is central to my art-making process and conceptual development. In these works, I alter standard time structures by imposing my …
Technical And Stylistic Changes In Jewelry From The Time Of Theophilus To The Time Of Cellini, Katherine Gresham Hodges
Technical And Stylistic Changes In Jewelry From The Time Of Theophilus To The Time Of Cellini, Katherine Gresham Hodges
Honors Theses
My thesis consists of research from an art historical perspective concerning a number of changes in the design, style, and fabrication of jewelry from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance and the influences that brought about those changes. I have found that social political, geographical, technological, and philosophical shifts in the Renaissance all wielded significant impact on the changes in design and style of jewelry. I have approached the subject by studying jewelry as an art form equal to other art forms such painting and sculpting, rather than as a decorative art or craft. By focusing on one prominent goldsmith …

Assessing Companies Allowance For Doubtful Accounts: Earnings Management And The Recession, David Mcarthur Neyhart
Honors Theses
The purpose of this thesis is to determine if the economic downturn from 2007- 2009 had any significant influence on company’s ability to estimate bad debt expense, and to examine if there were any noticeable trends of earnings management. The estimates that companies use for their estimated allowance for doubtful accounts are largely unregulated and subjective, and therefore are more easily manipulated. This point is illustrated in the Statements on Auditing Standards number 57.4 by saying, “As estimates are based on subjective as well as objective factors, it may be difficult for management to establish controls over them. Even when …

Delineating Interpersonal Communication Networks: A Study Of The Diffusion Of An Intervention Among Female Entertainment Workers In Shanghai, China, Yiyun Chen, Carl Latkin, David D. Celentano, Xiushi Yang, Xiaoming Li, Guomei Xia
Sociology & Criminal Justice Faculty Publications
Diffusion of innovation (DOI) is widely cited in the HIV behavior change literature; however there is a dearth of research on the application of DOI in interventions for sex workers. Following a randomized-controlled trial of HIV risk reduction among female entertainment workers (FEWs) in Shanghai, China, we used qualitative approaches to delineate potential interpersonal communication networks and contributing factors that promote diffusion of information in entertainment venues. Results showed that top-down communication networks from the venue owners to the FEWs were efficient for diffusion of information. Mammies/madams, who act as intermediaries between FEWs and clients form an essential part of …
The Causes And Effects Of Chinese Investment In Africa, Jamey Hurst
The Causes And Effects Of Chinese Investment In Africa, Jamey Hurst
Honors Theses
China’s engagement in Africa represents a radical departure from the modem paradigm of development. To the West, it represents a threat to the “Washington Consensus” and the accepted aid paradigm, but to African countries, the Chinese are providing much desired investment. Due to a paucity of information on this subject, this research aims to consolidate perspectives on this type of investment and identify factors leading to as well as the possible effects of the China-Africa relationship. This is accomplished by contextualizing the China-Africa relationship within a wider discourse on development, and then separating African countries on the basis of total …
