Diversity Of Archaeosine Synthesis In Crenarchaeota, Gabriela Phillips, Manal A. Swairjo, Kirk W. Gaston, Marc Bailly, Patrick A. Limbach, Dirk Iwata-Reuyl, Valérie De Crécy-Lagard

Chemistry Faculty Publications and Presentations

Archaeosine (G+) is found at position 15 of many archaeal tRNAs. In Euryarchaeota, the G+ precursor, 7-cyano-7-deazaguanine (preQ0), is inserted into tRNA by tRNA-guanine transglycosylase (arcTGT) before conversion into G+ by ARChaeosine Synthase (ArcS). However, many Crenarchaeota known to harbor G+ lack ArcS homologs. Using comparative genomics approaches, two families that could functionally replace ArcS in these organisms were identified: 1) GAT-QueC, a two-domain family with an N-terminal glutamine amidotransferase class-II domain fused to a domain homologous to QueC, the enzyme that produces preQ0; 2) QueF-like, a family homologous to the bacterial enzyme catalyzing the reduction of preQ0 to 7- …

The biosynthesis of GTP derived metabolites such as tetrahydrofolate (THF), biopterin (BH4), and the modified tRNA nucleosides queuosine (Q) and archaeosine (G+) relies on several enzymes of the Tunnel-fold superfamily. A subset of these proteins include the 6-pyruvoyl-tetrahydropterin (PTPS-II), PTPS-III, and PTPS-I homologs, all members of the COG0720 family, that have been previously shown to transform 7,8-dihydroneopterin triphosphate (H2NTP) into different products. PTPS-II catalyzes the formation of 6-pyruvoyltetrahydropterin in the BH4 pathway. PTPS-III catalyzes the formation of 6-hydroxylmethyl-7,8-dihydropterin in the THF pathway. PTPS-I catalyzes the formation of 6-carboxy-5,6,7,8-tetrahydropterin in the Q pathway. Genes of these …

The Property Strategy, Thomas W. Merrill Jan 2012

The Property Strategy, Thomas W. Merrill

Faculty Scholarship

My objective in this Article is to offer a description of property as an institution for organizing the use of resources in society. There are several strategies for deciding how valued things will be used, and by whom. “Might makes right” is one approach: we can let a strongman decide these questions. Bureaucratic governance is another: we can create a hierarchical organization and adopt rules and procedures for allocating resources. Group consensus is a third: questions about resource use can be resolved through meetings and discussion among those most closely involved. The claim advanced here is that property is a …

Processes And Pathways: How Do Mathematics And Science Partnerships Measure And Promote Growth In Teacher Content Knowledge?, Patricia S. Moyer-Packenham, A. Westenskow

Teacher Education and Leadership Faculty Publications

Intense focus on student achievement results in mathematics and science has brought about claims that K-12 teachers should be better prepared to teach basic concepts in these disciplines. The focus on teachers' mathematics and science content knowledge has been met by efforts to increase teacher knowledge through funded national initiatives focusing on mathematics and science. The purpose of the present study was to look across projects in the National Science Foundation's Math and Science Partnership Program to determine how partnerships developed processes for measuring growth in teacher content knowledge. Pre- and post-testing was the most common process for measuring growth …

Designed Desirable: Deteriorating Urban Communities Renewed, Ryan Hyllested Jan 2012

Designed Desirable: Deteriorating Urban Communities Renewed, Ryan Hyllested

Landscape Architecture Theses

This thesis studies how designers and planners can create a desirable community in the deteriorating urban communities affected by urban sprawl. By its nature this project is a community planning effort. The results of this research are guided by the idea that society would benefit from transforming deteriorating urban neighborhood districts into desirable communities for a variety of people. Creating desirable urban communities will solve problems such as disparity between groups in the city and suburbs, pollution from fossil fuel, and reduction in the consumption of Greenfield sites. This project takes the principles and ideas of creating a desirable community …

Mining The Past: A Celebration Of History And Culture In Minnesota's Iron Range, Michael Aasen Jan 2012

Mining The Past: A Celebration Of History And Culture In Minnesota's Iron Range, Michael Aasen

Landscape Architecture Theses

This project examines how the development of brownfields can benefit local communities and ecologies. Reclamation-based design principles are used to propose remediation of contaminated soils and the adaptive reuse of existing structures and landscapes. The focus lies in the creation of a space that exemplifies history and culture while enriching the lives of local residents and attracting future visitors. By strengthening the bond between the past and present, a stronger sense of identity will be formed along with cultural pride.

Creating Celebrations, Food, And Spaces, Ashley Hansen Jan 2012

Creating Celebrations, Food, And Spaces, Ashley Hansen

Landscape Architecture Theses

The city of Minneapolis, Minnesota in the Cedar Riverside neighborhood currently has one community garden dedicated to children. The neighborhood is one of the poorest in the city and is very ethnically diverse. With the University of Minnesota in the neighborhood it would be the perfect opportunity to have the latest technology for growing food. Using underutilized spaces such as walls, rooftops, and parks, will create the perfect area’s to grow food. By providing the area with different ways to grow food, people of all backgrounds can have access to healthy food while creating bonds.

The Third: Space Of Place In Transit-Orientated Development, Alex Johnson Jan 2012

The Third: Space Of Place In Transit-Orientated Development, Alex Johnson

Landscape Architecture Theses

This thesis project introduces an urban design concept into the residential suburb of New Hope, Minnesota, connecting social interaction and movement to the hub of the city center. It will illustrate the notion that suburban sprawl is an unsustainable reaction to population growth, and cities need to adapt to these changes by creating smaller habitable spaces that recentralize the urban fabric with mass transit connections. This project is intended to change a suburban neighborhood that has medium to low density into a less suburban setting with mass public transportation integrating accessible ways for the community to connect while remaining in …

back on the scope of patent subject matter in Prometheus, while according Congress great latitude in extending copyright protection in Golan. Prometheus was one of a number of cases in which the concept of functionality cut across the various areas of intellectual property. Prometheus cut back on patents on innovations that were not sufficiently functional, because they effectively claimed a law of nature. The Federal Circuit, in Myriad Genetics, by contrast, held isolated genes patentable (and the Supreme Court has decided to hear that case). The strongest rationale may be that isolated genes play different functions than their counterpart in …

Improving Physical Health, Sarah Mauel Jan 2012

Improving Physical Health, Sarah Mauel

Landscape Architecture Theses

Urban environments designed with the pedestrian as the primary user encourage more physical activity and promote lifelong physical health. The obesity rate in the United States for adults “eighteen and older tripled from 8.7% in 1976 to 27.4% in 2008” (Singh, 2011,p98). How communities are designed has a direct influence on how people get around. Urban environments are full of barriers that have caused a decline in physical activity (Frank, 2003). Today urban environments are designed for the automobile, leaving little room for the pedestrian. To improve the physical health of a community, cities must be planned better for pedestrian …

Growing Green With Phytoremediation, Kyla Witz Jan 2012

Growing Green With Phytoremediation, Kyla Witz

Landscape Architecture Theses

This thesis is premised on the basis that students benefit from both theoretical and practical applications. In this project, I have created an outdoor, interactive space that demonstrates the intersection between the science of phytoremediation and its practical benefits. In this project I have designed an outdoor classroom space for a school in South Beach, Miami, where elementary school children, as well as their teachers, parents, and the community, can experience the science of phytoremediation at work.

Irrationalism: The Foundation Of Hate Propaganda, Robert Lanning Jan 2012

Irrationalism: The Foundation Of Hate Propaganda, Robert Lanning

Journal of Hate Studies

This article proposes that hate propaganda be examined in terms of its basis in irrationalism as a philosophical orientation. In the first part of the paper, irrationalism is discussed from the perspectives of various 20th century philosophers engaged against the rise of fascism or responding to it. In the second part, selected examples of contemporary propaganda are discussed, demonstrating continuity in the use of irrationalism as a limitation to thought and analysis.
