Makara Journal of Science

The reclaimed mangrove estuary in Muara Angke Kapuk is a reclaimed area that has not evaded the impacted of pollution and waste in the areas surrounding Cengkareng, Jakarta. This is apparent from the fact that almost all sediments under the mangrove trees are buried under heaps of plastic trash. However, the reclaimed region still has variety of organism, which indicating that the region still has an internal carrying capacity, especially nutrients from sediment. The purpose of this research was to examine the condition of sediment nutrients in this mangrove reclamation region. The research was conducted by taking water samples using …

Makara Journal of Science

Complex formation of Ni(II) and 1,10-phenanthroline (C12H8N2/Phen) with the addition of dithizone (C13H12N4S/HDz) at the hexane-water interface has been studied by direct measurement spectrophotometry using the centrifugal liquid membrane (CLM) method. Ni(II) ion with Phen formed a cationic complex of Ni(C12H8N2)2 2+ or NiPhen2 2+. That complex dissolved in the aqueous phase and had two UV absorption spectrum maxima wavelengths, λmax 270 and 292 nm. Observation of complex formation was performed variations of pH and ligand concentration. The pH caused protonation that affected the amount of the formed complex. With the variations of ligand concentrations, the greater was the concentration …

Makara Journal of Science

The phenomenon of harmful algal blooms (HABs) in the Lampung Bay has been reported by many researchers. The occurrence of HABs may be due to the increase of nutrient (N and P) as results of waste water of aquaculture (shrimp farms, hatcheries and fish cage farms). This study aimed to determine the relationship between N and P concentrations in some aquaculture sites with harmful algal blooms. The analysis revealed the differences concentration of N and P at each different shrimp farms and fish cage farms sites (Hurun, Sidodadi, Ringgung, and Cikunyinyi Bay). The result showed that the increase of N …

Understanding Affordances: History And Contemporary Development Of Gibson’S Central Concept, Dobromir Dotov, Lin Nie, Matthieu M. De Wit

Journal Articles

Gibson developed the affordance concept to complement his theory of direct perception that stands in sharp contrast with the prevalent inferential theories of perception. A comparison of the two approaches shows that the distinction between them also has an ontological aspect. We trace the history and newer formalizations of the notion of affordance and discuss some competing opinions on its scope. Next, empirical work on the affordance concept is reviewed in brief and the relevance of dynamical systems theory to affordance research is demonstrated. Finally, the striking but often neglected convergence of the ideas of Gibson and those of certain …

A Novel Route To Organonitrites By Pd-Catalyzed Cross-Coupling Of Sodium Nitrite And Potassium Organotrifluoroborates, Mohammad Al-Masum, Nabil Saleh, Tasfia Islam

Chemistry Faculty Research

Microwave irradiated palladium-catalyzed cross-coupling reaction of potassium styryltrifluoroborates and sodium nitrite gives the corresponding styryl nitrites in high yields. Potassium aryltrifluoroborates also furnish aryl nitrites under same reaction condition. This unprecedented cross-coupling is an interesting development and has the potential to lead to new nitration protocols.

Public Expenditure, Environmental Pollution And Endogenous Economic Growth., Trishita Ray Barman Dr.

Doctoral Theses

Sources of Economic Growth and the Definition of Steady-State EquilibriumEconomic growth is defined as a continuous increase in national income taking place over a time horizon. According to the neoclassical theory of economic growth there are three sources of economic growth: (i) capital accumulation, (ii) growth of labour force and (iii) technological progress. The steady-state growth equilibrium is defined as a state where all major macro-economic variables grow at the same rate so that the ratios of these variables remain unchanged over time. For example, in the one sector aggregative model like that of Solow (1956), capital and labour grow at …

An Evaluation Of Models Of Bare Soil Evaporation Formulated With Different Land Surface Boundary Conditions And Assumptions, Kathleen M. Smits, Viet V. Ngo, Abdullah Cihan, Toshihiro Sakaki, Tissa H. Illangasekare Dec 2012

An Evaluation Of Models Of Bare Soil Evaporation Formulated With Different Land Surface Boundary Conditions And Assumptions, Kathleen M. Smits, Viet V. Ngo, Abdullah Cihan, Toshihiro Sakaki, Tissa H. Illangasekare

Civil Engineering Faculty Publications - Archive

Bare soil evaporation is a key process for water exchange between the land and the atmosphere and an important component of the water balance. However, there is no agreement on the best modeling methodology to determine evaporation under different atmospheric boundary conditions. Also, there is a lack of directly measured soil evaporation data for model validation to compare these methods to establish the validity of their mathematical formulations. Thus, a need exists to systematically compare evaporation estimates using existing methods to experimental observations. The goal of this work is to test different conceptual and mathematical formulations that are used to …

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

We present observations of the molecular gas in the nuclear environment of three prototypical low-luminosity active galactic nuclei (LLAGNs), based on VLT/SINFONI AO-assisted integral-field spectroscopy of H2 1-0 S(1) emission at angular resolutions of ~0.''17. On scales of 50-150 pc, the spatial distribution and kinematics of the molecular gas are consistent with a rotating thin disk, where the ratio of rotation (V) to dispersion (σ) exceeds unity. However, in the central 50 pc, the observations reveal a geometrically and optically thick structure of molecular gas (V/σ < 1 and N H > 1023 cm–2 …

Numerical Loop Quantum Cosmology: An Overview, Parampreet Singh Dec 2012

Numerical Loop Quantum Cosmology: An Overview, Parampreet Singh

Faculty Publications

A brief review of various numerical techniques used in loop quantum cosmology and results is presented. These include the way extensive numerical simulations provided insights into the resolution of classical singularities, resulting in the key prediction of the bounce at the Planck scale in different models, and the numerical methods used to analyze the properties of the quantum difference operator and the von Neumann stability issues. Using the quantization of a massless scalar field in an isotropic spacetime as a template, an attempt is made to highlight the complementarity of different methods to gain understanding of the new physics emerging …

Transforming Fabry-Pérot Resonances Into A Tamm Mode, Maxim Durach, Anastasia Rusina Dec 2012

Transforming Fabry-Pérot Resonances Into A Tamm Mode, Maxim Durach, Anastasia Rusina

Physics & Astronomy: Faculty Publications

We propose an optical structure composed of two metal nanolayers enclosing a distributed Bragg reflector (DBR) mirror. The structure is an open photonic system whose bound modes are coupled to external radiation. We apply the special theoretical treatment based on inversion symmetry of the structure to classify its resonances. We show that the structure supports resonances transitional between Fabry-Pérot modes and Tamm plasmons. When the dielectric contrast of the DBR is removed these modes are a pair of conventional Fabry-Pérot resonances. They spectrally merge into a Tamm mode at high contrast. The optical properties of the structure in the frequency …

Multiple Subject Barycentric Discriminant Analysis (Musubada): How To Assign Scans To Categories Without Using Spatial Normalization, Hervé Abdi, Lynne J. Williams, Andrew C. Connolly, M. Ida Gobbini Dec 2012

Multiple Subject Barycentric Discriminant Analysis (Musubada): How To Assign Scans To Categories Without Using Spatial Normalization, Hervé Abdi, Lynne J. Williams, Andrew C. Connolly, M. Ida Gobbini

Dartmouth Scholarship

We present a new discriminant analysis (DA) method called Multiple Subject Barycentric Discriminant Analysis (MUSUBADA) suited for analyzing fMRI data because it handles datasets with multiple participants that each provides different number of variables (i.e., voxels) that are themselves grouped into regions of interest (ROIs). Like DA, MUSUBADA (1) assigns observations to predefined categories, (2) gives factorial maps displaying observations and categories, and (3) optimally assigns observations to categories. MUSUBADA handles cases with more variables than observations and can project portions of the data table (e.g., subtables, which can represent participants or ROIs) on the factorial maps. Therefore MUSUBADA can …

Composite Ordinal Forecasting In Horse Racing - An Optimization Approach, Alan Tse, Chan-Ieong Chan

UNLV Gaming Research & Review Journal

Using horse racing data in Hong Kong as an example, this paper looks into the properties of an optimization model for making composite ordinal forecasts based on minimization of the absolute error of the joint distribution of the errors of twelve forecasters of race outcomes. It was found that the optimization model is not only sound theoretically, but it is also robust, and can handle situations when data are sparse.

Optimal Spatial Prediction Using Ensemble Machine Learning, Molly M. Davies, Mark J. Van Der Laan Dec 2012

Optimal Spatial Prediction Using Ensemble Machine Learning, Molly M. Davies, Mark J. Van Der Laan

U.C. Berkeley Division of Biostatistics Working Paper Series

Spatial prediction is an important problem in many scientific disciplines. Super Learner is an ensemble prediction approach related to stacked generalization that uses cross-validation to search for the optimal predictor amongst all convex combinations of a heterogeneous candidate set. It has been applied to non-spatial data, where theoretical results demonstrate it will perform asymptotically at least as well as the best candidate under consideration. We review these optimality properties and discuss the assumptions required in order for them to hold for spatial prediction problems. We present results of a simulation study confirming Super Learner works well in practice under a …

We present the discovery of KELT-1b, the first transiting low-mass companion from the wide-field Kilodegree Extremely Little Telescope-North (KELT-North) transit survey. A joint analysis of the spectroscopic, radial velocity, and photometric data indicates that the V = 10.7 primary is a mildly evolved mid-F star with T-eff = 6516 +/- 49 K, log g = 4.228(-0.021)(+0.014), and [Fe/H] = 0.052 +/- 0.079, with an inferred mass M* = 1.335 +/- 0.063M(circle dot) and radius R* = 1.471(-0.035)(+0.045) R-circle dot. The companion is a low-mass brown dwarf or a super-massive planet with mass M-P = 27.38 +/- 0.93 M-Jup and radius …

Condition-Dependent Risk Assessment Of Large-Scale Grid-Tied Photovoltaic Power Systems, Sherwin Li Dec 2012

Condition-Dependent Risk Assessment Of Large-Scale Grid-Tied Photovoltaic Power Systems, Sherwin Li

Master's Theses

This thesis reviews the methods for evaluating the reliability of large PV systems and techniques for quantifying the impacts of PV interconnection on distribution system reliability. In addition, a comparative study is performed to evaluate the seasonal condition-dependent risk performance of central-inverter and string-inverter grid-tied PV power systems. Major contributions include: 1) risk analysis of seasonal impacts for string and centralized PV systems. Seasonal sensitivities of PV system risks to system structures, temperature variation, solar insolation, and capacitor equivalent series resistance are analyzed; and 2) the incorporation of the effect of operational conditions and the aging failure model into the …

A Comparison Of Boltzmann And Gibbs Definitions Of Microcanonical Entropy For Small Systems, Randall B. Shirts Dec 2012

A Comparison Of Boltzmann And Gibbs Definitions Of Microcanonical Entropy For Small Systems, Randall B. Shirts

Faculty Publications

Two different definitions of entropy, S= klnW, in the microcanonical ensemble have been competing for over 100 years. The Boltzmann/Planck definition is that W is the number of states accessible to the system at its energy E (also called the surface entropy). The Gibbs/Hertz definition is that W is the number of states of the system up to the energy E (also called the volume entropy). These two definitions agree for large systems but differ by terms of order N-1 for small systems, where N is the number of particles in the system. For three analytical …

The Convergence Of Two Algorithms For Compressed Sensing Based Tomography, Xiezhang Li, Jiehua Zhu

Mathematical Sciences: Faculty Publications

The constrained total variation minimization has been developed successfully for image reconstruction in computed tomography. In this paper, the block component averaging and diagonally-relaxed orthogonal projection methods are proposed to incorporate with the total variation minimization in the compressed sensing framework. The convergence of the algorithms under a certain condition is derived. Examples are given to illustrate their convergence behavior and noise performance.

Measures Of Centrality Based On The Spectrum Of The Laplacian, Scott D. Pauls, Daniel Remondini Dec 2012

Measures Of Centrality Based On The Spectrum Of The Laplacian, Scott D. Pauls, Daniel Remondini

Dartmouth Scholarship

We introduce a family of new centralities, the k-spectral centralities. k-Spectral centrality is a measurement of importance with respect to the deformation of the graph Laplacian associated with the graph. Due to this connection, k-spectral centralities have various interpretations in terms of spectrally determined information.

We explore this centrality in the context of several examples. While for sparse unweighted net- works 1-spectral centrality behaves similarly to other standard centralities, for dense weighted net- works they show different properties. In summary, the k-spectral centralities provide a novel and useful measurement of relevance (for single network elements as well as whole subnetworks) …

A Mathematical Approach For Optimizing The Casino Slot Floor: A Linear Programming Application, Kasra C. Ghaharian, Ashok K. Singh

UNLV Gaming Research & Review Journal

The gaming literature has identified a number of factors that have driven the growth of Macau's casino industry. At the same time, however, questions remain as to future prospects for the growth of the enclave's gaming revenue- and specifically, whether this type of growth can be sustained. A forecast of Macau gaming revenue and an examination of its seasonality can assist scholars and practitioners alike in developing a better understanding of seasonal variation (a significant consideration in the volatile world of gaming) and the future outlook of the world gambling capital. The objective of this article is to investigate these …
