Universal Classification Of Topological Categories, Marta Alpar
Universal Classification Of Topological Categories, Marta Alpar
Open Access Dissertations
The main purpose of this dissertation is to construct, for various well known families of topological categories and some of their generalizations, a member of the family that is universal in the sense that every member of the family is isomorphic to the pullback, along its so called classifying functor, of the said universal family member. This is carried out by first constructing a topological category that is universal for the family of all topological categories and then by defining various family universal categories by describing their classifying functors. A further refinement is made by placing restrictions on the classifying …

Sensitivity Analysis For Causal Inference Under Unmeasured Confounding And Measurement Error Problems, Iván Díaz, Mark J. Van Der Laan
Sensitivity Analysis For Causal Inference Under Unmeasured Confounding And Measurement Error Problems, Iván Díaz, Mark J. Van Der Laan
U.C. Berkeley Division of Biostatistics Working Paper Series
In this paper we present a sensitivity analysis for drawing inferences about parameters that are not estimable from observed data without additional assumptions. We present the methodology using two different examples: a causal parameter that is not identifiable due to violations of the randomization assumption, and a parameter that is not estimable in the nonparametric model due to measurement error. Existing methods for tackling these problems assume a parametric model for the type of violation to the identifiability assumption, and require the development of new estimators and inference for every new model. The method we present can be used in …

Computationally Efficient Confidence Intervals For Cross-Validated Area Under The Roc Curve Estimates, Erin Ledell, Maya L. Petersen, Mark J. Van Der Laan
U.C. Berkeley Division of Biostatistics Working Paper Series
In binary classification problems, the area under the ROC curve (AUC), is an effective means of measuring the performance of your model. Most often, cross-validation is also used, in order to assess how the results will generalize to an independent data set. In order to evaluate the quality of an estimate for cross-validated AUC, we must obtain an estimate for its variance. For massive data sets, the process of generating a single performance estimate can be computationally expensive. Additionally, when using a complex prediction method, calculating the cross-validated AUC on even a relatively small data set can still require a …

A National Model Built With Partial Least Squares And Universal Kriging And Bootstrap-Based Measurement Error Correction Techniques: An Application To The Multi-Ethnic Study Of Atherosclerosis, Silas Bergen, Lianne Sheppard, Paul D. Sampson, Sun-Young Kim, Mark Richards, Sverre Vedal, Joel Kaufman, Adam A. Szpiro
UW Biostatistics Working Paper Series
Studies estimating health effects of long-term air pollution exposure often use a two-stage approach, building exposure models to assign individual-level exposures which are then used in regression analyses. This requires accurate exposure modeling and careful treatment of exposure measurement error. To illustrate the importance of carefully accounting for exposure model characteristics in two-stage air pollution studies, we consider a case study based on data from the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis (MESA). We present national spatial exposure models that use partial least squares and universal kriging to estimate annual average concentrations of four PM2.5 components: elemental carbon (EC), organic carbon (OC), …

Ctod: Collaborative Tree-Based Outlier Detection In Wireless Sensor Networks, Dylan Mcdonald, Sanjay Kumar Madria, Fikret Ercal, Ryan Birmingham, Thomas Lake
Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works
Outlier detection is a well-studied problem in various fields. the unique challenges of wireless sensor networks such as limited bandwidth, memory, energy, and unreliable communication make this problem especially difficult. Sensors can detect outliers for a plethora of reasons and these reasons need to be inferred in real time. Here, we present a new robust communication framework for the unsupervised in network detection of outliers in a wireless sensor network. First, communication is minimized through an ad-hoc collaborative communication scheme which controls sensor behavior to increase overall visibility of individual streaming data sets. Second, an outlier detection algorithm is tailored …

Role Of Epidermal Growth Factor-Triggered Pi3k/Akt Signaling In The Migration Of Medulloblastoma-Derived Cells, Veronica Dudu, Richard A. Able, Jr., Veronica Rotari, Qingjun Kong, Maribel Vazquez
Publications and Research
Medulloblastoma (MB) is the most common brain cancer diagnosed among children. The cellular pathways that regulate MB invasion in response to environmental cues remain incompletely understood. Herein, we examine the migratory response of human MB-derived Daoy cells to different concentration profiles of Epidermal Growth Factor (EGF) using a microfluidic system. Our findings provide the first quantitative evidence that EGF concentration gradients modulate the chemotaxis of MB-derived cells in a dose-dependent manner via the EGF receptor (EGF-R). Data illustrates that higher concentration gradients caused increased number of cells to migrate. In addition, our results show that EGF-induced receptor phosphorylation triggered the …
The Effect Of A Three Set Tennis Match On Knee Kinematics And Leg Muscle Activation During The Tennis Serve, Brad Fenter
The Effect Of A Three Set Tennis Match On Knee Kinematics And Leg Muscle Activation During The Tennis Serve, Brad Fenter
Health and Kinesiology Theses
Tennis matches can be long, physically challenging affairs. Matches are often determined by the serving proficiency of the players. The serve has been extensively studied, but the relationship between the serve and match length regarding knee kinematics and leg muscle activation is not well documented in a real time environment. The purpose of the current study was to determine the effect a three-set tennis match had on knee kinematics and muscle activation of quadriceps and hamstrings during the serve. Ten male collegiate tennis players (age: 19.6±1.7) were recruited from The University of Texas at Tyler. All participants played a three-set …
Tuning Parameter Selection In L1 Regularized Logistic Regression, Shujing Shi
Tuning Parameter Selection In L1 Regularized Logistic Regression, Shujing Shi
Theses and Dissertations
Variable selection is an important topic in regression analysis and is intended to select the best subset of predictors. Least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (Lasso) was introduced by Tibshirani in 1996. This method can serve as a tool for variable selection because it shrinks some coefficients to exact zero by a constraint on the sum of absolute values of regression coefficients. For logistic regression, Lasso modifies the traditional parameter estimation method, maximum log likelihood, by adding the L1 norm of the parameters to the negative log likelihood function, so it turns a maximization problem into a minimization one. To …
Energy Performance And Cost Analysis Of Phase Change Materials With Different Melting Temperature In Heating Systems / Mehdi Rezaei, Rezaei Mehdi
Student Works (2010-2019)
Usage of thermal energy storage (TES) for storing energy is a favorable technology which is used in current years. It improved extremely during previous years by application of phase change materials (PCMs). One of the major applications of the storage is heating and cooling in the buildings. The normal TES for application in buildings is water which is used in the heating system but recently PCM technology improvement helpd to use different types of PCMs for increasing energy and exergy efficiency of TES system. In some researches the energetic and exergetic analyses of systems which work with PCMs in fixed …

Integrating Alternative Energy Production Into The Public School Science Curriculum, Benjamin Overbeek
Integrating Alternative Energy Production Into The Public School Science Curriculum, Benjamin Overbeek
Honors Theses
In the next few years, many teachers will be challenged in new ways. Student engagement will be at a premium and state standards will be more specific, shifting their focus towards college readiness, integration of curriculum, and developing sound reasoning and critical thinking skills. While the education field is accustomed to adapting and adjusting “on the go”, it may be ill-prepared for this fresh round of changes. Teachers and curriculum directors need resources to help them adapt the classrooms to reflect the more comprehensive design implied by the new standards (Next Generation Science Standards, 2012). This paper promotes a spiral …
