This secondary data analysis used data mining methods to develop predictive models of child risk for distress during a healthcare procedure. Data used came from a study that predicted factors associated with children's responses to an intravenous catheter insertion while parents provided distraction coaching. From the 255 items used in the primary study, 44 predictive items were identified through automatic feature selection and used to build support vector machine regression models. Models were validated using multiple cross-validation tests and by comparing variables identified as explanatory in the traditional versus support vector machine regression. Rule-based approaches were applied to the model …

The Association Of Elevated 2′,5′-Oligoadenylate-Dependent Rnase L With Lung Cancer Correlated With Deficient Enzymatic Activity And Decreased Capacity Of Rnase L Dimerization, Huijing Yin, Aimin Zhou, Yalei Dai

Chemistry Faculty Publications

RNase L mediates critical cellular functions including antiviral, proapoptotic, antiproliferative and tumor suppressive activities. In this study, the expression and function of RNase L in lung cancer cells were examined. Interestingly we have found that the expression of RNase L in lung cancer cells was 3- and 9-fold higher in its mRNA and protein levels, but a significant decrease of its enzymatic activity when compared to that in corresponding normal lung cells. Further investigation revealed that 2-5A-induced dimerization of the RNase L protein, a necessary prerequisite for activation of RNase L, was inhibited, as a result of that RLI, a …

Production Of Z 0 Bosons In Elastic And Quasi-Elastic Ep Collisions At Hera, Margarita C. K. Mattingly

Faculty Publications

The production of Z0 bosons in the reaction ep -> eZ0p*, where p* stands for a proton or a low-mass nucleon resonance, has been studied in ep collisions at HERA using the ZEUS detector. The analysis is based on a data sample collected between 1996 and 2007, amounting to 496 pb-1 of integrated luminosity. The Z0 was measured in the hadronic decay mode. The elasticity of the events was ensured by a cut on eta_max < 3.0, where eta_max is the maximum pseudorapidity of energy deposits in the calorimeter defined with respect to the proton beam direction. A signal was observed at the Z0 mass. The cross section of the reaction ep -> eZ0p* was measured to be sigma(ep -> eZ0p*) = 0.13 +/- 0.06 (stat.) +/- 0.01 (syst.) pb, in agreement with the Standard Model prediction of …

Learning Disabilities And Self-Esteem, Renee I. Pandy Oct 2012

Learning Disabilities And Self-Esteem, Renee I. Pandy

All Capstone Projects

Social acceptance is pivotal in a child's life but it is harder to obtain if one has a learning disability (LD). Individuals with learning disabilities experience being ostracized, ridiculed and labeled as dumb, subnormal and slow learners by their peers. ''Leaming disabilities" is a term that's used to describe different types of learning problems. A learning disability is not a disease. Children with learning disabilities are often stigmatized and associated with failure, which lowers their self-esteem. Academic problems a child with a learning disability may experience can be a constant source of frustration, especially in the areas of reading, math, …

Decay Rates Of A Molecule In The Vicinity Of A Spherical Surface Of An Isotropic Magnetodielectric Material, H. Y. Chung, P.T. Leung, D. P. Tsai

Physics Faculty Publications and Presentations

A comprehensive study is presented on the decay rates of excited molecules in the vicinity of a magnetodielectric material of spherical geometry via electrodynamic modeling. Both the models based on a driven-damped harmonic oscillator and on energy transfers will be applied so that the total decay rates can be rigorously decomposed into the radiative and the nonradiative rates. Clarifications of the equivalence of these two models for arbitrary geometry will be provided. Different possible orientations and locations of the molecule are studied with the molecule being placed near a spherical particle or a cavity. Among other results, TE modes are …

Analysis Of Dpa And Dema Attacks, Cheuk Wong Oct 2012

Analysis Of Dpa And Dema Attacks, Cheuk Wong

Master's Projects

Side channel attacks (SCA) are attacks on the implementations of cryptographic algorithms or cryptography devices that do not employ full brute force attack or exploit the weaknesses of the algorithms themselves. There are mant types of side channel attacks, and they include timing, sound, power consumptions, electromag- netic (EM) radiations, and more. A statistical side channel attack technique that uses power consumption and EM readings was developed, and they are called Differential Power Analysis (DPA) and Differential Electromagnetic Analysis respectively. DPA takes the overall power consumption readings from the system of interest, and DEMA takes a localized EM readings from …

Computational Modeling Of Protein Dynamics With Gromacs And Java, Miaoer Yu Oct 2012

Computational Modeling Of Protein Dynamics With Gromacs And Java, Miaoer Yu

Master's Projects

GROMACS is a widely used package in molecular dynamics simulations of biological molecules such as proteins, and nucleic acids, etc. However, it requires many steps to run such simulations from the terminal window. This could be a challenge for those with minimum amount of computer skills. Although GROMACS provides some tools to perform the standard analysis such as density calculation, atomic fluctuation calculation, it does not have tools to give us information on the specific areas such as rigidity that could predict the property of the molecules. In this project, I have developed a user friendly program to carry out …

Simple Substitution Distance And Metamorphic Detection, Gayathri Shanmugam Oct 2012

Simple Substitution Distance And Metamorphic Detection, Gayathri Shanmugam

Master's Projects

To evade signature-based detection, metamorphic viruses transform their code before infecting a new system. Software similarity measures are potentially useful as a means of detecting metamorphic malware. We can compare a given file to a known sample of malware and compute their similarity—if they are sufficiently similar, we classify the file as malware of the same family. The goal of this project is to analyze an opcode-based software similarity measure inspired by simple substitution cipher cryptanalysis.

Generally, it includes use of public transportation services like those provided by Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) to Santa Clara County. VTA has reported total combined boarding of light rails and buses as more than a million on yearly basis. This fact clearly indicates the importance of public transportation in a society. Obviously trip planning and schedule matching are two very decisive factors to improve transit experiences. Information related to services makes it easy for users to plan their journey ahead. Still manual planning and information discovery is time consuming, tedious, …

Algorithms For Predicting Secondary Structures Of Human Viruses, Hardik Shah Oct 2012

Algorithms For Predicting Secondary Structures Of Human Viruses, Hardik Shah

Master's Projects

The mechanism and role of RNA secondary structure elements in the replication and translation of human positive-strand RNA viruses remains poorly understood. These secondary structures are formed when a single RNA strand folds over and base pairs with itself, forming various types of loop structures. RNA strands fold into specific shapes. This unique shape for each nucleic acid chain is the most stable state it can adopt. The lower the energy, i.e., the fold with highest number of base pairs, the higher the stability of the structure. The Dynamic Programming technique, such as the one used in Nussinov- Jacobson algorithm, …

Masquerade detection is a special case of the general intrusion detection problem. We have collected data from a large number of users. This data includes infor- mation on user commands and a variety of other aspects of user behavior that can be used to construct a profile of a given user. Hidden Markov models have been used to train user profiles, and the various attack strategies have been analyzed. The …

Easier Debugging Of Multithreaded Software, Sampada Kathare Oct 2012

Easier Debugging Of Multithreaded Software, Sampada Kathare

Master's Projects

Software activation is a technique designed to avoid illegal use of a licensed software. This is achieved by having a legitimate user enter a software activation key to validate the purchase of the software. Generally, a software is a single-threaded program. From an attacker’s perspective, who does not wish to pay for this software, it is not hard to reverse engineer such a single threaded program and trace its path of execution. With tools such as OllyDbg, the attacker can look into the disassembled code of this software and find out where the verification logic is being performed and then …
