A Study Of Cellular Calcium Dynamics In Culture Using Fluorescence Microscopy – A Statistical And Mathematical Approach, Richard Adekola Idowu Oct 2012

A Study Of Cellular Calcium Dynamics In Culture Using Fluorescence Microscopy – A Statistical And Mathematical Approach, Richard Adekola Idowu

Doctoral Dissertations

Calcium in its ionic form is very dynamic, especially in excitable cells such as muscle and brain cells, moving from the high concentration exterior of the cell to much lower concentrations inside the cell, where calcium is used as a second messenger. In brain cells, and neurons especially, calcium is a key signaling ion involved in memory and learning with excitatory neurotransmitters such as glutamate turning neurons "on." Glutamate excites the neurons in part by causing large and dynamic changes in the intracellular calcium concentration. While these dynamics are essential for normal signaling in the brain, excessive and sustained elevations …

Obtaining Estimators From Correlation Coefficients: The Correlation Estimation System And R, Rudy Gideon Oct 2012

Obtaining Estimators From Correlation Coefficients: The Correlation Estimation System And R, Rudy Gideon

Mathematical Sciences Faculty Publications

Correlation coefficients are generally viewed as summaries, causing them to be underutilized. Creating functions from them leads to their use in diverse areas of statistics. Because there are many correlation coefficients (see, for example, Gideon (2007)) this extension makes possible a very broad range of statistical estimators that rivals least squares. The whole area could be called a "Correlation Estimation System." This paper outlines some of the numerous possibilities for using the system and gives some illustrative examples. Detailed explanations are developed in earlier papers. The formulae to make possible both the estimation and some of the computer coding to …

Creating The Perfect Debater, Vimal Bellamkonda '15 Oct 2012

Creating The Perfect Debater, Vimal Bellamkonda '15

2012 Fall Semester

This past week, my classmates engaged each other in the aggressive art of debate. Several rhetorical devices and strategies were implemented in order to sway the audience. Some were successful, while others failed. However, some aspects of delivery truly stood out to me. Those who wore an air of competency, by speaking self-assuredly and maintaining good physical appearance through posture and hand gestures, were as a whole more convincing. In addition, those who appealed to logic and emotion had generally more believable arguments. Thus, in order to create the perfect debater, I would unify the skills of the speakers who …

We have investigated particle acceleration and shock structure associated with an unmagnetized rel-ativistic jet propagating into an unmagnetized plasma for electron-positron and electron-ion plasmas. Strong magnetic fields generated in the trailing jet shock lead to transverse deflection and acceleration of the electrons. We have self-consistently calculated the radiation from the electrons accelerated in the turbulent magnetic fields for different jet Lorentz factors. We find that the synthetic spectra depend on the bulk Lorentz factor of the jet, the jet temperature, and the strength of the magnetic fields generated in the shock. We have investigated the generation of magnetic fields associated …

An Infrastructure To Support Data Integration And Curation For Higher Educational Research, Linh B. Ngo, Amy W. Apon, Pengfei Xuan, Kimberley Ferguson, Christin Marshall, John Mccann, Yueli Zheng

Publications

The recent challenges for higher education call for research that can offer a comprehensive understanding about the performance and efficiency of higher education institutions in their three primary missions: research, education, and service. In other for this to happen, it is necessary for researchers to have access to a multitude of data sources. However, due to the nature of their academic training, many higher education practitioners do not have access to expertise in working with different data sources. In this work, we describe a design and implementation for an infrastructure that will bring together the tools and the data to provide …

Late Holocene Sedimentation And Paleoenvironmental History For The Tidal Marshes Of The Potomac And Rappahannock Rivers, Tributaries To Chesapeake Bay, Neil E. Tibert, J. Bradford Hubeny, Mark Abbott, Joseph M. Kiker, Lindsay J. Walker, Shawn Mckenzie

Virginia Journal of Science

Instrumental tide gauge records indicate that the modern rates of sea-level rise in the Chesapeake Bay more than double the global average of 1.2-1.5 mm yr-1. The primary objective for this study is to establish a relative depositional history for the tidal marshes of the Potomac and Rappahannock Rivers that will help us improve our understanding of processes that influence sedimentation in the proximal tributaries of Chesapeake Bay. Marsh cores were collected from Blandfield Point VA, Tappahannock VA, and Potomac Creek VA. The sedimentary facies include: 1) a lower unit of organic-poor, grey clay with fine sand and silt layers …

Developmental Perspective Into Students' Contextualization Of Problem Solving, Jonathan Bostic, Sean Yee

School of Teaching and Learning Faculty Publications

The purpose of this paper is to investigate students’ contextualization of problem solving, not the problems. This study draws on the naturalistic paradigm and uses a developmental perspective to explore students’ representations and metaphors used during problem solving. Students of comparable abilities employed similar representations, tended to use analogous metaphors during problem solving, and perceived solutions as outside of a problem’s context.

Mutation In The Plasmodium Falciparum Crt Protein Determines The Stereospecific Activity Of Antimalarial Cinchona Alkaloids, Carol E. Griffin, Jonathan M. Hoke, Upeka Samarakoon, Junhui Duan, Jianbing Mu, Michael T. Ferdig, David C. Warhurst, Roland Cooper

Collected Faculty Scholarship

The Cinchona alkaloids are quinoline aminoalcohols that occur as diastereomer pairs, typified by (-)-quinine and (+)-quinidine. The potency of (+)-isomers is greater than the (-)-isomers in vitro and in vivo against Plasmodium falciparum malaria parasites. They may act by the inhibition of heme crystallization within the parasite digestive vacuole in a manner similar to chloroquine. Earlier studies showed that a K76I mutation in the digestive vacuole-associated protein, PfCRT (P. falciparum chloroquine resistance transporter), reversed the normal potency order of quinine and quinidine toward P. falciparum. To further explore PfCRT-alkaloid interactions in the malaria parasite, we measured the in vitro susceptibility …

A Conceptual Framework For Measuring The Quality Aspect Of Mobile Learning, Luiz Fernando Capretz, Abdalha Ali, Abdelkader Ouda

Electrical and Computer Engineering Publications

With the continuing growth of mobile phones outpacing that of desktops and laptops, mobile phones are the new personal computer. These devices started becoming increasingly sophisticated and extremely powerful. In addition to making phone calls it have the capabilities to perform variety functions, one of the most important functions using it as a classroom tool. However, mobile phone applications must be designed and developed with respect to different technologies skills, learning capabilities and language proficiency in order to be accepted by wide audiences (e.g., students, instructors). However, there is much work that has been done to measure the quality of …

A Geospatial Modeling Framework For Assessing Biofuels-Related Land-Use And Land-Cover Change, Ruopu Li, Qingfeng (Gene) Guan, James W. Merchant

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

With the increasing biofuel demands in recent years, the cultivated lands for biofuel crops, i.e., corn and soybeans, the major sources of ethanol and biodiesel, have been greatly expanding in the northern Great Plains states of the United States. Simulating the spatio-temporal dynamics of biofuel croplands can provide critical information required for assessing the impacts of land-use change on wildlife conservation and water quality. But, yearly agricultural practices such as crop rotations often complicate the spatially explicit modeling of specific crops’ expansion. Our research focused on developing a geospatial modeling framework that is able to distinguish long-term, regional changes in …

Developing A Restorable Wetland Index For Rainwater Basin Wetlands In South-Central Nebraska: A Multi-Criteria Spatial Analysis, Zhenghong Tang, Xu Li, Nan Zhao, Ruopu Li, F. Edwin Harvey

Community and Regional Planning Program: Faculty Scholarly and Creative Activity

It is always challenging for decision makers to prioritize wetland conservation programs at the landscape scale. This study employed a GIS-based multi-criteria spatial decision support tool that identified locations with the highest restoration potential for wetland conservation programs in the Rainwater Basin in south-central Nebraska. Five indicators were considered to assess wetland restoration potential: (1) Vegetation characteristics; (2) Soil characteristics; (3) Water volume released from hydrological modification of agricultural irrigation pits; (4) Topographical depression status; and (5) Habitat condition. The results suggested 192 (1.6% of the total) hydric soil footprints as the highest prioritized locations for future wetland restoration programs. …

Self-Assurance And Literature, Stephanie Wang '14 Oct 2012

Self-Assurance And Literature, Stephanie Wang '14

2012 Fall Semester

Recognizing our faults and failures is no voluntary task. We are cautious, almost reluctant, to do so as those shortcomings cast a shadow over the ideal lives we would like to have. Our inability to confront our problems leads us to follow the lives of characters in books and stories whose flaws are apparent to us – characters who struggle valiantly against or fall miserably to the challenges they face. From the epic Beowulf, where the god-like hero Beowulf fights glorious battles, to Chaucer’s The Canterbury Tales, where common folk embark on a pilgrimage, we are fascinated by …

Reputation: A Destructive Force, Srisha Kotlo '14 Oct 2012

Reputation: A Destructive Force, Srisha Kotlo '14

2012 Fall Semester

In Shakespeare’s play As You Like It, a soldier “[seeks] the bubble reputation even in the cannon’s mouth” (“Shakespeare”). Shakespeare portrays reputation as a bubble because just as bubbles are fragile and can pop at any moment, a man’s reputation is delicate and can be lost in an instant. Reputation and prestige are highly valued by characters in many stories and plays. In Shakespeare’s Othello, Cassio and Othello strive to preserve notable reputations while Iago intends to use reputation as a tool for manipulation, and as the play unfolds they get exceedingly desperate to defend their reputations. This …

Marital Power Plays, Gina Liu '14 Oct 2012

Marital Power Plays, Gina Liu '14

2012 Fall Semester

William Shakespeare’s Othello describes the deterioration of the jealous Moorish general Othello’s marriage with Venetian noblewoman Desdemona. This domestic crisis, ignited by conniving manservant Iago’s careful manipulations, hinges upon one handkerchief, its significance within Othello’s and Desdemona’s courtship, and its engineered discovery in the bedchambers of Michael Cassio. Just as this small handkerchief assumes an integral role, the actions of Emilia, Iago’s wife, enable the fruition of his plots but ultimately result in his exposure and downfall; thus, Othello documents the decline of not one, but two marriages. The largest contrast between these two relationships is division of power, for …
