An Exponential Moving Average Algorithm, David Haynes, Steven Corns, Ganesh Kumar Venayagamoorthy
Engineering Management and Systems Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Techniques to reduce the search space when an optimizer seeks an optimal value are studied in this paper. a new mutation technique called the "Exponential Moving Average" algorithm (EMA) is introduced. the performance of EMA algorithms is compared to two other similar Computational Intelligence (CI) algorithms (an ordinary Evolutionary Algorithm (EA) and a "Mean-Variance Optimization" (MVO)) to solve a multi-dimensional problem which has a large search space. the classic Sudoku puzzle is chosen as the problem with a large search space. © 2012 IEEE.

Alternative Strategies For Identifying High-Performing Charter Schools In Texas, Lori L. Taylor, Paige C. Perez
Alternative Strategies For Identifying High-Performing Charter Schools In Texas, Lori L. Taylor, Paige C. Perez
Journal of Applied Research on Children: Informing Policy for Children at Risk
The Obama administration's recurring policy emphasis on high-performing charter schools begs the obvious question: how do you identify a high-performing charter school? That is a crucially important policy question because any evaluation strategy that incorrectly identifies charter school performance could have negative effects on the economically and/or academically disadvantaged students who frequently attend charter schools. If low-performing schools are mislabeled and allowed to persist or encouraged to expand, then students may be harmed directly. If high-performing schools are driven from the market by misinformation, then students will lose access to programs and services that can make a difference in their …
Expanding Learning Time In Schools: Considering The Challenges Of Implementation And The Potential Impact, David Farbman
Expanding Learning Time In Schools: Considering The Challenges Of Implementation And The Potential Impact, David Farbman
Journal of Applied Research on Children: Informing Policy for Children at Risk
Considering the broader context of school reform that is seeking education strategies that might deliver substantial impact, this article examines four questions related to the policy and practice of expanding learning time: (a) why do educators find the standard American school calendar insufficient to meet students’ educational needs, especially those of disadvantaged students? (b) how do educators implement a longer day and/or year, addressing concerns about both educational quality and costs? (c) what does research report about outcomes of expanding time in schools? and (d) what are the future prospects for increasing the number of expanded-time schools? The paper examines …

The Comprehensive Assessment Of Leadership For Learning: A Next Generation Formative Evaluation And Feedback System, Carolyn Kelley, Richard Halverson
Journal of Applied Research on Children: Informing Policy for Children at Risk
Recent developments in federal policy have prompted the creation of state evaluation frameworks for principals and teachers that hold educators accountable for effective practices and student outcomes. These changes have created a demand for formative evaluation instruments that reflect current accountability pressures and can be used by schools to focus school improvement and leadership development efforts. The Comprehensive Assessment of Leadership for Learning (CALL) is a next generation, 360-degree on-line assessment and feedback system that reflect best practices in feedback design. Some unique characteristics of CALL include a focus on: leadership distributed throughout the school rather than as carried out …

Computerizing Social-Emotional Assessment For School Readiness: First Steps Toward An Assessment Battery For Early Childhood Settings, Susanne A. Denham, Hideko H. Bassett, Katherine Zinsser
Journal of Applied Research on Children: Informing Policy for Children at Risk
The transition into formal schooling is a crucial foundation that can set children on a cycle of success or failure in both academic and social domains. A child’s abilities to express healthy emotions, understand emotions of self and others, regulate emotion, attention, and behavior, make good decisions regarding social problems, and engage in a range of prosocial behaviors, all work together to promote a successful school experience.
However, many children have deficits in these skills by school entry, and educators lack the requisite tools to identify, track and assess skills these children need to learn. Thus, because social-emotional learning (SEL) …

Mathematical Modeling Of Craniospinal Hydrodynamics: Investigation Of Csf Dynamics And Compliance Function, Rong-Wen Tain
Mathematical Modeling Of Craniospinal Hydrodynamics: Investigation Of Csf Dynamics And Compliance Function, Rong-Wen Tain
Open Access Dissertations
During each heart beat, the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) flows back and forth between the cranium and spinal canal. This pulsatile flow is driven by the pulsatile blood flow to the cranial vault and is modulated by the biomechanical properties of the craniospinal system (e.g., intracranial and spinal canal compliances). Considerable effort has been made over the last eight decades, primarily using invasive techniques, to understand the dynamics of the CSF pulsation and the role of each of the system’s sub-compartments in modulation of the CSF pulsation. Even with the significant technical advances in both invasive and non-invasive modalities over the …

Physics Presentations And Conference Materials
Effective real-time HIFU lesion detection is important for expanded use of HIFU in interventional electrophysiology (e.g., epicardial ablation of cardiac arrhythmia). The goal of this study was to investigate rapid, high-frequency M-mode ultrasound imaging for monitoring spatiotemporal changes in tissue during HIFU application. The HIFU application (4.33 MHz, 1000 Hz PRF, 50% duty cycle, 1 s exposure, 6100 W/cm2) was perpendicularly applied to porcine cardiac tissue with a high-frequency imaging system (Visualsonics Vevo 770, 55 MHz, 4.5 mm focal distance) confocally aligned. Radiofrequency (RF) M-mode data (1 kHz PRF, 4 s × 7 mm) was acquired before, during, …

Electron Induced Charging And Arcing Of Multilayered Dielectric Materials, John R. Dennison, Gregory Wilson, Amberly Evans
All Physics Faculty Presentations
Measurements of the charge distribution in electron-bombarded, thin-film, multilayered dielectric samples showed that charging of multilayered materials evolves with time and is highly dependent on incident energy; this is driven by electron penetration depth, electron emission and material conductivity. Based on the net surface potential’s dependence on beam current, electron range, electron emission and conductivity, measurements of the surface potential, displacement current and beam energy allow the charge distribution to be inferred. To take these measurements, a thin-film disordered SiO2 structure with a conductive middle layer was charged using 200 eV and 5 keV electron beams with regular 15 s …

Infrared Thermography For Noninvasive Real-Time Monitoring Of Hifu Ablation, Yi-Sing Hsiao, Ronald Kumon, Cheri X. Deng
Physics Presentations And Conference Materials
Infrared imaging for spatiotemporal temperature measurements was explored in this study for non-contact monitoring of temperature increases generated by HIFU ablation. Using ex vivo cardiac tissue specimens, we investigated the correlations between the occurrence of events during HIFU ablation (e.g., lesion formation, cavity formation) and the 2D spatiotemporal temperature of the tissue surface measured during HIFU ablation from an infrared camera. An increase in the rate of temperature rise was observed when lesions formed at or slightly beneath the tissue surface. Spatial shifts in the maximum temperature location away from the HIFU focus were often observed with continuing HIFU exposure …

Hohenberg-Kohn Theorem Including Electron Spin, Xiao-Yin Pan, Viraht Sahni
Publications and Research
The Hohenberg-Kohn theorem is generalized to the case of a finite system of N electrons in external electrostatic epsilon(r) = -del nu(r) and magnetostatic B(r) = del x A(r) fields in which the interaction of the latter with both the orbital and spin angular momentum is considered. For a nondegenerate ground state a bijective relationship is proved between the gauge invariant density rho(r) and physical current density j(r) and the potentials {nu(r), A(r)}. The possible many-to-one relationship between the potentials {v(r), A(r)} and the wave function is explicitly accounted for in the proof. With the knowledge that the basic variables …

A Modular Fibrinogen Model That Captures The Stress-Strain Behavior Of Fibrin Fibers, Rodney D. Averett, Bryant Menn, Eric H. Lee, Christine C. Helms, Thomas Barker, Martin Guthold
Physics Faculty Publications
We tested what to our knowledge is a new computational model for fibrin fiber mechanical behavior. The model is composed of three distinct elements: the folded fibrinogen core as seen in the crystal structure, the unstructured α-C connector, and the partially folded α-C domain. Previous studies have highlighted the importance of all three regions and how they may contribute to fibrin fiber stress-strain behavior. Yet no molecular model has been computationally tested that takes into account the individual contributions of all these regions. Constant velocity, steered molecular dynamics studies at 0.025 Å/ps were conducted on the folded fibrinogen …

Reconstructability Of Epistatic Functions, Martin Zwick, Joe Fusion, Beth Wilmot
Reconstructability Of Epistatic Functions, Martin Zwick, Joe Fusion, Beth Wilmot
Complex Systems Faculty Publications and Presentations
Background: Reconstructability Analysis (RA) has been used to detect epistasis in genomic data; in that work, even the simplest RA models (variable-based models without loops) gave performance superior to two other methods. A follow-on theoretical study showed that RA also offers higher-resolution models, namely variable-based models with loops and state-based models, likely to be even more effective in modeling epistasis, and also described several mathematical approaches to classifying types of epistasis.
Methods: The present paper extends this second study by discussing a non-standard use of RA: the analysis of epistasis in quantitative as opposed to nominal variables; such quantitative variables …

A Linear Programming Model For Time-Alignment Of Cockpit Voice Recorder And Flight Data Recorder Data, William A. Tuccio, Harold D. Townsend
A Linear Programming Model For Time-Alignment Of Cockpit Voice Recorder And Flight Data Recorder Data, William A. Tuccio, Harold D. Townsend
Journal of Aviation Technology and Engineering
Aircraft accident forensics include analyzing cockpit voice recorder (CVR) and flight data recorder (FDR) information. Each recorder is independent of the other and often share no common time frame. Analysts must align the two time scales using common events on each recorder, such as microphone keying events. Using test drive development and linear programming, we have created a two-step model to align the CVR and FDR recordings. The first linear model matches microphone keying events, while the second linear model optimizes alignment of the time scales. When the constrained optimization problem produces a feasible solution, a standardized computer-generated sentence is …
Simulation Design Approach For The Selection Of Alternative Commercial Passenger Aircraft Seating Configurations, Christopher A. Chung
Simulation Design Approach For The Selection Of Alternative Commercial Passenger Aircraft Seating Configurations, Christopher A. Chung
Journal of Aviation Technology and Engineering
Loading strategies for commercial passenger aircraft have been a subject of recent study among air transportation research analysts. A fundamental assumption in the majority of these studies is the fixed configuration of passenger seats. Previous studies have focused on analyzing different strategies in an effort to reduce passenger loading time. This study takes a more proactive approach to the passenger loading process by starting with the design of the aircraft seating layout itself. Simulation analysis results indicate that alternative designs can result in loading time reductions between approximately 9–44%.
