The Oxidation Of Hydrogen Peroxide On Nanostructured Rhodium Microelectrodes, N. Bartlett Philip, F. Esterle Thomas Oct 2012

The Oxidation Of Hydrogen Peroxide On Nanostructured Rhodium Microelectrodes, N. Bartlett Philip, F. Esterle Thomas

Journal of Electrochemistry

Mesoporous Rh films were deposited onto platinum microelectrodes from the H1 lyotropic liquid crystalline phase of C12EO8 (octaethyleneglycol monododecyl ether). The electrodes show well defined voltammetry for the oxidation and the reduction of hydrogen peroxide at low concentrations (<10 mmol•L-1) with excellent stability for operation at neutral pH. Based on the hysteresis in the current and the potential dependence the oxidation of hydrogen peroxide occurs through a CEE mechanism involving Rh(OH)3 on the mesoporous Rh electrode surface. At higher hydrogen peroxide concentrations the current reaches a plateau that is due to either saturation of the binding sites for hydrogen peroxide or limitation of the reaction due to acidification of the solution within the pores. For the thin films (below 200 nm) the hydrogen peroxide calibration curves we …

Underpotential Deposition Of Copper On Pt(S)[N(100)X(110)] Stepped Surfaces, Gisbert Rubn, Climent Vctor, Herrero Enrique, M. Feliu Juan

Journal of Electrochemistry

The underpotential deposition of Cu on platinum stepped surfaces composed of (100) terraces and (110) monoatomic steps has been studied in different acidic solutions. It has been found that the initial stage of copper deposition on the surface takes place simultaneously on terrace and step sites, irrespective of the nature of the adsorbing anion. During the voltammetric deposition of a full monolayer, several peaks can be observed. The analysis of the dependence of the peak charge with the step density allows assigning the different peaks to different deposition sites. The peak appearing at most positive potentials corresponds to the deposition …

The Electrochemical Properties Of 1-Pyrenebutyric Acid/Graphene Composites And Their Application In Glucose Biosensors, Min Wang, Jiong Wang, Fengbin Wang, Xinghua Xia

Journal of Electrochemistry

The electrochemical properties of 1-pyrenebutyric acid/graphene composites (PBA/G) obtained by one-step synthesis via π-π stacking was investigated. The electrochemical impedance titration curve shows the surface charge changes as function of solution pH by using ferricyanide/ferrocyanide redox couple as the probe. An apparent pKa value is estimated as 6.2 according to the impedance titration curve. In addition, a glucose biosensor was constructed by immobilizing glucose oxidase (GOD) on the surface of PBA/G via covalent interaction. This biosensor shows a linear response to glucose within the concentration up to 5 mmol L-1 with a detection limit of 0.085 mmol L …

The Role Of Case-Hardening In The Development And Preservation Of Narrow, Vertical-Walled Canyons In Adršpach-Teplice, Czech Republic, Shawn Austin Wiggins

Theses and Dissertations

The geomorphology at Adršpach-Teplice, Czech Republic is dominated by vertical-walled, fracture-controlled features including slot canyons, gorges and pillars. Surfaces of canyon walls in Adršpach are case-hardened and more resistant to erosion than the bulk of the sandstone, which appears to be fundamental to the formation and preservation of canyons. Core and whole rock samples from Adršpach-Teplice were analyzed in thin section, including SEM analysis with cathodo luminescence. XRF and XRD analyses indicated that silica case-hardened surfaces are chemically and mineralogically similar to the rock interior, while iron case-hardened surfaces have an increase in iron present at the surface as the …

The distribution of spiral and bar galaxy inclination an- gles is expected to be uniform. However, analysis of sev- eral major galaxy catalogs shows this is not the case; galaxies oriented near edge-on are significantly more common in these catalogs. In an attempt to explain this discrepancy, we have developed a galaxy simulation code to compute the appearance of a spiral type galaxy as a function of its morphological parameters. We examine the dependence of observed brightness upon inclination angle by using smooth luminous mass density and in- terstellar medium (ISM) density distributions. The lu- minous mass component is integrated …

Characterizing Sky Variability For Multi-Messenger Astronomy, Rachel Nydegger, Katie Breivik, Shane L. Larson

Browse All Undergraduate research

Multi-messenger astronomy employs both electromagnetic and gravitational wave detectors to paint a richer picture of celestial objects, providing more depth and in formation. Localizing sources with gravitational wave interferometers on the sky is difficult, with resolution of many square degrees. To have simultaneous electromagnetic observations (localized typically to less than one square degree) requires innovative techniques for the telescopes to find the origin of radiation. One idea is to tile the view of the interferometer, using multiple telescopes to simultaneously point at different areas of the field to observe the source. One problematic aspect of this observing paradigm is distinguishing …

Muon Contribution To Cathodoluminescence Tests?, Justin Dekany, Allen Anderson, Jr Dennison

Posters

Tests of composites incorporating highly disordered insulating materials that were bombarded with low-flux keV electron beams exhibited three distinct forms of light emission: short-duration (<<1 s), high intensity luminous electrostatic discharges between the insulator and ground--termed “arcs”; intermediate-duration (10-100 s), intense surface emissions—termed “flares”; and lower intensity, continuous surface cathodoluminescent “glow”. During long-duration experiments at temperatures <150 K, relatively intense flare events occurred at rates of ~2 per min. Rapid increase in photon emission and electron displacement current were observed, with long exponential decay times >1 min. We propose that the source of the flares is the interactions of high energy muons—of cosmic ray origin—with the highly-charged insulating components of the composite materials, which trigger avalanche electrostatic discharge and subsequent recharging along with concomitant light emission. We review evidence from the insulator conductivity at low temperatures, the rates and magnitude of surface charging, the flare frequency, and the magnitude and time-dependence of currents and light emission with regard to this …

Space Impact Ejecta Model Of Micrometeoroid Collision On Misse-6, Kelby T. Peterson, Jr Dennison

Presentations

The Utah State University SUSpECS project was a unique student experiment that allowed for pre- and post-flight analysis of various materials used in space-component design. Approximately 180 material samples were flown on MISSE-6 and spent 18 months suspended off the side of the International Space Station, which were returned in pristine condition. This presentation focuses on the most intriguing sample, a thin film of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) MylarTM coated with Vapor Deposited Aluminum (VDA). Samples that were part of the Materials International Space Station Experiment (MISSE) experienced diverse effects whilst exposed to the space environment. This sample in particular, …

Power And Charge Deposition In Multilayer Dielectrics From Monoenergetic Electron Bombardment, Gregory Wilson, Amberly Evans, Justin Dekany, Jr Dennison

Presentations

Power and charge deposition in multilayer dielectrics from electron bombardment is dependent upon the flux and electron range of the electron beam, where the range,--a lso known as the penetration depth—is dependent upon the incident beam energy. Using the Continuous Slow Down Approximation (CSDA), a composite analytical formula has been developed to relate the electron range to the dose rate and subsequently to the deposited power in each subsequent layer. Based on the constituent layer geometry and material , the deposited charge can also be inferred. To validate these models two separate experiments were conducted, one based on the net …

Short Period Gravity Waves In The Arctic Atmosphere Over Alaska, Michael Negale, Kim Nielsen, Michael J. Taylor, Britta Irving, Richard Collins

Physics Student Research

The propagation nature and sources of short-period gravity waves have been studied extensively at low and mid-latitudes, while their extent and nature at the polar regions are less known. During the last decade, observations from select sites on the Antarctic continent have revealed a significant presence of these waves over the southern Polar Region as well as shown unexpected dynamical behavior. In contrast, observations over the Arctic region are few and the dynamical behavior is unknown. A recent project was initiated in January 2011 to investigate the presence and dynamics of these waves over interior Alaska. This site provides an …

Extending The Band Model Of Disordered Sio2 Through Cathodoluminescence Studies, Amberly Evans, Gregory Wilson, Jr Dennison, Justin Dekany

Presentations

Optical coatings of disordered thin film SiO2/SiOx dielectric samples on reflective metal substrates exhibited electron-induced luminescence (cathodoluminescence) under electron beam irradiation in an ultrahigh vacuum chamber at the USU facilities,. These experiments provided measurements of the absolute radiance and emission spectra as functions of incident electron energy, flux and power over a range of sample temperatures (300 K to 40 K). Early results from these experiments have led to a preliminary model of the band structure of highly disordered trapped states within the band gap of SiO2. We now extend this model to further describe …

Water: Conserving Our Most Precious Resource, John Holmes Gcvo, Kbe, Cmg Oct 2012

Water: Conserving Our Most Precious Resource, John Holmes Gcvo, Kbe, Cmg

Reports (USI)

This was a thoughtful discussion on a vital and still neglected issue. While there was enough fresh water in the world overall, its distribution did not match that of the global population. Climate change, continuing population growth, urbanisation and altered dietary habits were all exacerbating existing problems of fresh water availability. But there was little new action at national or international level, though local and private sector decisions were making a difference in some places. In the end we might have to take the water to the people rather than expecting the people to go to the water, as had …

Estimating Hiv Prevalence In The Presence Of Spatial Variation, Matthew D. Austin, Christopher D. Barr, Victor Degruttola

COBRA Preprint Series

Data from antenatal clinics in Botswana provide information on age, HIV status, and geographic cluster (clinic) for women in their child-bearing years. To make use of these data, it is necessary to extend spline estimation methods to adjust for correlation that arises due to geographic proximity of clinics and closeness in age among women within clinics. We use a logistic model with mean function specified by natural cubic splines, and a composite likelihood approach to accommodate all possible pairs of geographical clusters. These methods allow us to generate smooth estimates of age-specific HIV prevalence in Botswana. Repeated measures of such …

Statistical Hypothesis Test Of Factor Loading In Principal Component Analysis And Its Application To Metabolite Set Enrichment Analysis, Hiroyuki Yamamoto, Tamaki Fujimori, Hajime Sato, Gen Ishikawa, Kenjiro Kami, Yoshiaki Ohashi

COBRA Preprint Series

Principal component analysis (PCA) has been widely used to visualize high-dimensional metabolomic data in a two- or three-dimensional subspace. In metabolomics, some metabolites (e.g. top 10 metabolites) have been subjectively selected when using factor loading in PCA, and biological inferences for these metabolites are made. However, this approach is possible to lead biased biological inferences because these metabolites are not objectively selected by statistical criterion. We proposed a statistical procedure to pick up metabolites by statistical hypothesis test of factor loading in PCA and make biological inferences by metabolite set enrichment analysis (MSEA) for these significant metabolites. This procedure depends …

Efficient Calculation Of Steady State Probability Distribution For Stochastic Biochemical Reaction Network., Shahriar Karim, Gregery T. Buzzard, David Michael Umulis

School of Agricultural & Biological Engineering Faculty Publications

The Steady State (SS) probability distribution is an important quantity needed to characterize the steady state behavior of many stochastic biochemical networks. In this paper, we propose an efficient and accurate approach to calculating an approximate SS probability distribution from solution of the Chemical Master Equation (CME) under the assumption of the existence of a unique deterministic SS of the system. To find the approximate solution to the CME, a truncated state-space representation is used to reduce the state-space of the system and translate it to a finite dimension. The subsequent ill-posed eigenvalue problem of a linear system for the …
