Password-Authenticated Two-Party Key Exchange With Long-Term Security, Weizheng. Gao Jan 2012

Password-Authenticated Two-Party Key Exchange With Long-Term Security, Weizheng. Gao

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

In the design of two-party key exchange it is common to rely on a Die-Hellman type hardness assumption in connection with elliptic curves. Unlike the case of nite elds, breaking multiple instances of the underlying hardness assumption is here considered substantially more expensive than breaking a single instance. Prominent protocols such as SPEKE [12] or J-PAKE [8, 9, 10] do not exploit this, and here we propose a password-authenticated key establishment where the security builds on the intractability of solving a specied number of instances v of the underlying computational problem. Such a design strategy seems particularly interesting when aiming …

Seakeeping Response Of A Surface Effect Ship In Near-Shore Transforming Seas, Michael. Kindel Jan 2012

Seakeeping Response Of A Surface Effect Ship In Near-Shore Transforming Seas, Michael. Kindel

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Scale model tests are conducted of a Surface Effect Ship in a near-shore developing sea. A beach is built and installed in a wave tank, and a wavemaker is built and installed in the same wave tank. This arrangement is used to simulate developing sea conditions and a 1:30 scale model SES is used for a series of experiments. Pitch and heave measurements are used to investigate the seakeaping response of the vessel in developing seas. The air-cushion pressure and the vessel speed are varied, and the seakeeping results are compared as functions of these two parameters. The experiment results …

Optimization Of Bus System Characteristics In Urban Areas Under Normal And Emergency Conditions, Ionannis Psarros Jan 2012

Optimization Of Bus System Characteristics In Urban Areas Under Normal And Emergency Conditions, Ionannis Psarros

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Catastrophic events in the past revealed the need for more research in the field of emergency evacuation. During such a procedure, different problems such as congestion at the related traffic networks because of the large number of the evacuating vehicles can occur. Current best practices, in order to deal with such problems, suggest the further involvement of buses in evacuation operations. On the first part of this study after the accurate development of the related simulation model, the optimization of a selected bus system characteristics focusing on the vehicle routing parameter will follow through the development and the application of …

Optimization And Inductive Models For Continuous Estimation Of Hydrologic Variables, Ricardo Eric Brown Jan 2012

Optimization And Inductive Models For Continuous Estimation Of Hydrologic Variables, Ricardo Eric Brown

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

This thesis develops methodologies for continuous estimation of hydrological variables which infill missing daily rainfall data and the forecast of weekly streamflows from a watershed. Several mathematical programming formulations were developed and used to estimate missing historical rainfall data. Functional relationships were created between radar precipitation and known rain gauge data then are used to estimate the missing data. Streamflow predictions models require highly non-linear mathematical models to capture the complex physical characteristics of a watershed. An artificial neural network model was developed for streamflow prediction. There are no set methods of creating a neural network and the selection of …

On The Spectrum Of Positive Operators, Cheban P. Acharya Jan 2012

On The Spectrum Of Positive Operators, Cheban P. Acharya

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Spectral theory, mathematical system theory, evolution equations, differential and difference equations [electronic resource] : 21st International Workshop on Operator Theory and Applications, Berlin, July 2010.It is known that lattice homomorphisms and G-solvable positive operators on Banach lattices have cyclic peripheral spectrum (See [17]). In my thesis I prove that positive contractions whose spectral radius is 1 on Banach lattices with increasing norm have cyclic peripheral point spectrum. I also prove that if the Banach lattice is a K B space satisfying the growth conditon and º is an eigenvalue of a positive contraction T such that [º] = 1, then …

Numerical Models To Simulate Underwater Turbine Noise Levels, Renee'. Lippert Jan 2012

Numerical Models To Simulate Underwater Turbine Noise Levels, Renee'. Lippert

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

This work incorporates previous work done by Guerra and the application of fluid dynamics. The structure attached to the turbine will cause unsteady fluctuations in the flow, and ultimately affect the acoustic pressure. The work of Guerra is based on a lot of assumptions and simplifications to the geometry of the turbine and structure. This work takes the geometry of the actual turbine, and uses computational fluid dynamic software to numerically model the flow around the turbine structure. Varying the angle of the attack altered the results, and as the angle increased the noise levels along with the sound pulse, …

Novel Optimization Algorithm And Other Techniques In Medicinal Chemistry, Radleigh G. Santos

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

In this dissertation we will present a stochastic optimization algorithm and use it and other mathematical techniques to tackle problems arising in medicinal chemistry. In Chapter 1, we present some background about stochastic optimization and the Accelerated Random Search (ARS) algorithm. We then present a novel improvement of the ARS algorithm, DIrected Accelerated Random Search (DARS), motivated by some theoretical results, and demonstrate through numerical results that it improves upon ARS. In Chapter 2, we use DARS and other methods to address issues arising from the use of mixture-based combinatorial libraries in drug discovery. In particular, we look at models …

Noise Radiation From Small Steps And Cubic Roughness Elements In Turbulent Boundary Layer Flow, Benjamin Skyler Bryan Jan 2012

Noise Radiation From Small Steps And Cubic Roughness Elements In Turbulent Boundary Layer Flow, Benjamin Skyler Bryan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Ji and Wang (2010) propose that the dominant source of sound from a forward facing step is the stream wise dipole on the face of the step and that sources acting normal to the flow are negligible. Sound radiation normal to flow of forward facing steps has been measured in wind tunnel experiments previously by Farabee and Casarella (1986, 1991) and Catlett (2010). A method for evaluating sound radiation from surface roughness proposed in Glegg and Devenport (2009) has been adapted and applied to flow over a forward facing step which addresses the sound normal to the flow that was …

On The Laplacian And Fractional Laplacian In Exterior Domains, And Applications To The Dissipative Quasi-Geostrophic Equation, Leonardo. Kosloff Jan 2012

On The Laplacian And Fractional Laplacian In Exterior Domains, And Applications To The Dissipative Quasi-Geostrophic Equation, Leonardo. Kosloff

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

In this work, we develop an extension of the generalized Fourier transform for exterior domains due to T. Ikebe and A. Ramm for all dimensions n>2 to study the Laplacian, and fractional Laplacian operators in such a domain. Using the harmonic extension approach due to L. Caffarelli and L. Silvestre, we can obtain a localized version of the operator, so that it is precisely the square root of the Laplacian as a self-adjoint operator in L2 with DIrichlet boundary conditions. In turn, this allowed us to obtain a maximum principle for solutions of the dissipative two-dimensional quasi-geostrophic equation the …

As part of a project to study internal waves, FAU plans to utilize an AUV to tow a magnetometer to study electromagnetic signatures from internal waves. This research is focused on the electromagnetic noise issues related to using an AUV to tow the magnetic sensor package. There are active sources of electromagnetic noise caused by an AUV that are present in addition to those induced by the Earth's magnetic field and permanent magnets. To characterize the magnetic noise associated with the AUV magnetometer tow system, the various active source elements were identified, the orientation sensitivity of the sensors being used …

Coset Intersection Problem And Application To 3-Nets, Nicola Pace Jan 2012

Coset Intersection Problem And Application To 3-Nets, Nicola Pace

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

In a projective plane (PG(2, K) defined over an algebraically closed field K of characteristic p = 0, we give a complete classification of 3-nets realizing a finite group. The known infinite family, due to Yuzvinsky, arised from plane cubics and comprises 3-nets realizing cyclic and direct products of two cyclic groups. Another known infinite family, due to Pereira and Yuzvinsky, comprises 3-nets realizing dihedral groups. We prove that there is no further infinite family and list all possible sporadic examples. If p is larger than the order of the group, the same classification holds true apart from three possible …

Design And Analysis Of An Ocean Current Turbine Performance Assessment System, Matthew T. Young Jan 2012

Design And Analysis Of An Ocean Current Turbine Performance Assessment System, Matthew T. Young

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

This thesis proposes a sensor approach for quantifying the hydrodynamic performance of Ocean Current Turbines (OCT), and investigates the influence of sensor-specific noise and sampling rates on calculated turbine performance. Numerical models of the selected sensors are developed, and then utilized to add stochastic measurement error to numerically-generated, non-stochastic OCT data. Numerically-generated current velocity and turbine performance measurements are used to quantify the relative influence of sensor-specific error and sampling limitations on sensor measurements and calculated OCT performance results. The study shows that the addition of sensor error alters the variance and mean of OCT performance metric data by roughly …

Design And Analysis Of Key Establishment Protocols, Kashi. Neupane Jan 2012

Design And Analysis Of Key Establishment Protocols, Kashi. Neupane

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Consider a scenario where a server S shares a symmetric key kU with each user U. Building on a 2-party solution of Bohli et al., we describe an authenticated 3-party key establishment which remains secure if a computational Bilinear Diffie Hellman problem is hard or the server is uncorrupted. If the BDH assumption holds during a protocol execution, but is invalidated later, entity authentication and integrity of the protocol are still guaranteed. Key establishment protocols based on hardness assumptions, such as discrete logarithm problem (DLP) and integer factorization problem (IFP) are vulnerable to quantum computer attacks, whereas the protocols based …

Detection, Localization, And Identification Of Bearings With Raceway Defect For A Dynamometer Using High Frequency Modal Analysis Of Vibration Across An Array Of Accelerometers, Nicholas. Waters Jan 2012

Detection, Localization, And Identification Of Bearings With Raceway Defect For A Dynamometer Using High Frequency Modal Analysis Of Vibration Across An Array Of Accelerometers, Nicholas. Waters

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

This thesis describes a method to detect, localize and identify a faulty bearing in a rotating machine using narrow band envelope analysis across an array of accelerometers. This technique is developed as part of the machine monitoring system of an ocean turbine. A rudimentary mathematical model is introduced to provide an understanding of the physics governing the vibrations caused by a bearing with a raceway defect. This method is then used to detect a faulty bearing in two setups : on a lathe and in a dynamometer.

Divine Alchemy In Paradise Lost, Andrea J. Rutherford Jan 2012

Divine Alchemy In Paradise Lost, Andrea J. Rutherford

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

This study examines the themes of alchemy and transformation in Paradise Lost and seventeenth-century thought. Beginning with an overvieiw of the historical roots of alchemy, this study analyzes the ancient, underlying philosophical concepts that marital union produces the birth of the soul and that destruction is necessary for this birth. Alchemical references identified in Paradise Lost include animal lore and direct alchemical images, which demonstrate Milton's knowledge of alchemy and his deliberate use of the alchemical metaphor. These themes support the proposal that Milton, a Christian humanist, uses alchemy as a metaphor described in this study as "divine alchemy," which …

Developing A Photovoltaic Mppt System, Thomas Bennett Jan 2012

Developing A Photovoltaic Mppt System, Thomas Bennett

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Many issues related to the design and implementation of a maximum power point tracking (MPPT) converter as part of a photovoltaic (PV) system are addressed. Effect Of Median Grain Size Ratio On The Compaction Behavior Of Binary Granular Mixes, Tara Devine Brenner Jan 2012

Effect Of Median Grain Size Ratio On The Compaction Behavior Of Binary Granular Mixes, Tara Devine Brenner

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Optimization of compaction in granular material without the use of traditional ground improvement methods may be possible by optimizing the percentage of finer material and the median grain size ratio in binary soil mixtures. In this study, the median grain size ratio D50/d50 was explored as a fundamental parpmeter affecting the compaction characteristics of binary mixes made from natural sands as opposed to singular measurements such as fines content and mean grain size traditionally used to represent granular soils. A total of 18 binary granular mixes were synthetically generated from natural sands obtained from Longboat Key, Florida and evaluated through …

Fractal Analysis Applied To Ancient Egyptian Monumental Art, Jessica. Robkin

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

The study of ancient Egyptian monumental art is based on subjective and qualitative analyses by art historians and Egyptologists who use the change in stylistic trends as Dynastic chronological markers. The art of the ancient Egyptians is recognized the world over due to its specific and consistent style that lasted the whole of Dynastic Egypt. This artwork exhibits fractal qualities that support the applicability of applying fractal analysis as a quantitative and statistical tool to be used in this field. In this thesis, I show the fractality of ancient Egyptian monumental art by analyzing black and white line drawings of …

Functional Constraints On Young Children's Object Problem Solving, Sarah Bidmead Jan 2012

Functional Constraints On Young Children's Object Problem Solving, Sarah Bidmead

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Although some research has suggested that very young children are "immune" to functional fixedness (FF), other work has shown that young children form robust associations between objects and their prescribed functions. Across two studies, I investigated (a) the developmental trajectory of FF and (b) its relationship with executive function components (inhibitory control and working memory) in 3- to 6-year old children. Both older and younger children experience FF, but older children use familiar tools more flexibly than younger children (3- and 4-year olds). Furthermore, inhibitory control was related to overcoming FF, indicating that it may be an important cognitive capacity …

Helicopter Stability During Aggressive Maneuvers, Ranjith. Mohan Jan 2012

Helicopter Stability During Aggressive Maneuvers, Ranjith. Mohan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

The dissertation investigates helicopter trim and stability during level bank-angle and diving bank-angle turns. The level turn is moderate in that sufficient power is available to maintain level maneuver, and the diving turn is severe where the power deficit is overcome by the kinetic energy of descent. The investigation basically represents design conditions where the peak loading goes well beyond the steady thrust limit and the rotor experiences appreciable stall. The major objectives are: 1) to assess the sensitivity of the trim and stability predictions to the approximations in modeling stall, 2) to correlate the trim predictions with the UH-60A …

The research will also explore how the political environment influenced his composition during those years.

Humdrum Aha!, Dana Odwazny Pell Jan 2012

Humdrum Aha!, Dana Odwazny Pell

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Following the work of Sara Houghton-Walker and Edward Strickland, this thesis theorizes the "mundane sublime" as encountered in romanticist John Clare's poetry. Instead of being oriented upward, as with Longinus's elevatory sublime, Clare's mundane sublime brings the subject downward to earth. While the sublime of the Burkean tradition begins with terror, I claim that the mundane sublime emerges out of love for that which is commonplace. Still revelatory, it may be further characterized by an engagement with ecosystems, eternity, divinity, and nature as a whole. Clare's style scaffolds images resulting in a profusion of detail that arrests the mind and …

Internal Waves On A Continental Shelf, Arjun. Jagannathan Jan 2012

Internal Waves On A Continental Shelf, Arjun. Jagannathan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

In this thesis, a 2D CHebyshev spectral domain decomposition method is developed for simulating the generation and propagation of internal waves over a topography. While the problem of stratified flow over topography is by no means a new one, many aspects of internal wave generation and breaking are still poorly understood. This thesis aims to reproduce certain observed features of internal waves by using a Chebyshev collation method in both spatial directions. The numerical model solves the inviscid, incomprehensible, fully non-linear, non-hydrostatic Boussinesq equations in the vorticity-streamfunction formulation. A number of important features of internal waves over topography are captured …
