Investigation Of Electroosmotic Flow Dynamics And Reproducibility In Capillary Electrophoresis, Funda Kizilkaya
Investigation Of Electroosmotic Flow Dynamics And Reproducibility In Capillary Electrophoresis, Funda Kizilkaya
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The goal of this dissertation is to investigate electroosmotic flow (EOF) and electric field dynamics during capillary electrophoresis (CE) experiments using methods based on periodic photobleaching of fluorophores added to the separation buffer at nanomolar concentrations. The methods provide time resolved EOF and local electric field information during an experiment, which can be applied to fundamental studies to provide better understanding of CE techniques. The potential of the EOF monitoring method to improve CE migration reproducibility was investigated in Chapter 2. The EOF monitoring method and four other methods from the literature were applied to the same electrophoretic separations, and …
C0 Interior Penalty Methods For Cahn-Hilliard Equations, Shiyuan Gu
C0 Interior Penalty Methods For Cahn-Hilliard Equations, Shiyuan Gu
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
In this work we study C0 interior penalty methods for Cahn-Hilliard equations. In Chapter 1 we introduce Cahn-Hilliard equations and the time discretization that leads to linear fourth order boundary value problems. In Chapter 2 we review related fundamentals of finite element methods and multigrid methods. In Chapter 3 we formulate the discrete problems for linear fourth order boundary value problems with the boundary conditions of the Cahn-Hilliard type, which are called C0 interior penalty methods, and we carry out the convergence analysis. In Chapter 4 we consider multigrid methods for the C0 interior penalty methods. We present two smoothing …

Reductive Dechlorination Of High Concentrations Of 1,2-Dichloroethane, 1,2-Dichloropropane, And 1,1,2-Trichloroethane By Dehalogenimonas Sp., Andrew D. Maness
LSU Master's Theses
The research goals presented here were to evaluate the solvent concentrations over which Dehalogenimonas lykanthroporepellens strain BL-DC-9T and Dehalogenimonas sp. IP3-3 are able to reductively dechlorinate 1,2-dichloroethane (1,2-DCA), 1,2-dichloropropane (1,2-DCP), and 1,1,2-trichloroethane (1,1,2-TCA). Both of these novel bacteria were isolated from contaminated groundwater at the PetroProcessors of Louisiana, Inc. Superfund site located near Baton Rouge. Both cluster in the phylum Chloroflexi, related to, but distinct from, the widely studied, reductively dechlorinating “Dehalococcoides” strains .
Although previous research demonstrated that strains BL-DC-9T and IP3-3 are able to reductively dechlorinate a variety of polyhalogenated alkanes, the solvent concentration at which the strains …
Impact Of Lean Production On Workers' Exposure To Risk In Modular Home Building Manufacturing, Joel James
Impact Of Lean Production On Workers' Exposure To Risk In Modular Home Building Manufacturing, Joel James
LSU Master's Theses
The construction industry records the highest number of work-related injuries and fatalities in the United States according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Workers’ exposure to risk may be affected by implementing Lean concepts. This study describes the effects on worker’s safety environment after a Kaizen event, a Lean tool, conducted in three workstations within a modular home manufacturer: base-framing, sheet-rock hanging, and painting. The effects of Lean on safety hazards at each of the three workstations were determined by conducting a Job Safety Analysis (JSA) before and after each Kaizen. Based on the JSAs a risk assessment tool (questionnaire) …
The Biomechanics Of Salt Marsh Vegetation Applied To Wave And Surge Attenuation, James Chatagnier
The Biomechanics Of Salt Marsh Vegetation Applied To Wave And Surge Attenuation, James Chatagnier
LSU Master's Theses
The Northern coast of the Gulf of Mexico is threatened by storm surge and waves from tropical storms. It has been long known that marsh vegetation attenuates storm surge and waves and is vital for sustaining marsh edges. However, little is known about the relationship between plant properties and the amount of storm surge and wave reduction the plants provide. In order to better understand the stiffness properties and physical dimensions of saltmarsh vegetation, which are directly related to their ability to attenuate waves and storm surge, this study has been conducted. Stiffness of salt marsh vegetation was determined through …
New Orleans Center For Creative Arts: A History In Progress, Suzanne Michelle Blanchard Chambliss
New Orleans Center For Creative Arts: A History In Progress, Suzanne Michelle Blanchard Chambliss
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
In the state of Louisiana, a quality education for secondary school students can be hard to come by in any area of study much less in the areas of the arts. The New Orleans Center for Creative Arts (NOCCA) provides a quality education to those talented students who audition and are accepted into the program. NOCCA has only existed since 1974 and in its relatively short life it has become a model for half-day pre-professional training programs throughout the United States and it has proven that it is possible to receive a quality education in Louisiana.
Effects Of Varying Land Use On Headwater Stream Fish Assemblages And In-Stream Habitats In Southwestern Louisiana, Alexandra Marie Fitzgerald
Effects Of Varying Land Use On Headwater Stream Fish Assemblages And In-Stream Habitats In Southwestern Louisiana, Alexandra Marie Fitzgerald
LSU Master's Theses
Although watershed land use effects on in-stream fish habitat and fish-macrohabitat associations have been widely studied in the past, low-gradient, coastal Louisiana streams have been poorly described in the literature. In this thesis, I report the results of a two-year study exploring relationships among regional land use, in-stream physical habitat, and headwater stream fish assemblages. In chapter two, I examined in-stream habitat variables such as depth, flow, and substrate combined with three-pass electrofishing depletion estimates at thirteen 100-m stream sites. I used a combination of principle component analysis and structural equation modeling to determine if trends were present in the …

Drinking With Friends: A Cellular Automata Approach To Modeling Peer Influence On Binge Drinking Behavior, Piper Jackson, Andrew Reid, Niki Huitson, Kathryn Wuschke, Vahid Dabbaghian
Drinking With Friends: A Cellular Automata Approach To Modeling Peer Influence On Binge Drinking Behavior, Piper Jackson, Andrew Reid, Niki Huitson, Kathryn Wuschke, Vahid Dabbaghian
Criminology and Criminal Justice Faculty Publications and Presentations
In this project, we adopt Cellular Automata (CA) modeling as a means to focus solely on the elements of concern: individual state (binging) and local interactions (peer pressure). CA models are well suited for exploring the dynamics that occur within a population, and are useful for visualizing the clustering behaviour of communities. With this more abstract approach, it is possible to simulate large populations with reasonable computational requirements.
Efficient Finite Element Modeling Of Reinforced Concrete Columns Confined With Fiber Reinforced Polymers, Dan Hu
LSU Master's Theses
Fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) composites have found extensive applications in the field of Civil Engineering due to their advantageous properties such as high strength-to-weight ratio and high corrosion resistance. This study presents a simple and efficient frame finite element (FE) able to accurately estimate the load-carrying capacity and ductility of reinforced concrete (RC) circular columns confined with externally bonded fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) plates and/or sheets. The proposed FE considers distributed plasticity with fiber-discretization of the cross-sections in the context of a force-based (FB) formulation. The element is able to model collapse due to concrete crushing, reinforcement steel yielding, and …
Low-Order Modeling Of Micro-Flier Impact With Thin Stationary Energetic Targets, Mark B. Fry
Low-Order Modeling Of Micro-Flier Impact With Thin Stationary Energetic Targets, Mark B. Fry
LSU Master's Theses
The impact of high-speed (500-1500 m/s), laser driven micro-fliers with thin energetic targets (10-100 956;m) is being examined to characterize impact-induced heating and combustion of these materials. Aluminum fliers are propelled by a laser into a thin metallic target plate having a layer of energetic material deposited on its backside. Mass spectrometry is performed in vacuo on the energetic side to interrogate the shock-induced chemistry of the energetic material. It is important to ignite and possibly detonate the energetic material without perforation of the target plate avoiding contamination of the vacuum chamber. To guide development of these experiments, a …

Using Generalized Estimating Equations To Analyze Repeated Measures Binary Data From The Young Adolescent Crowd Study, Lauren Ashley Beacham
Using Generalized Estimating Equations To Analyze Repeated Measures Binary Data From The Young Adolescent Crowd Study, Lauren Ashley Beacham
LSU Master's Theses
The young adolescent crowd study (YACS) was conducted in order to look at the influence of various factors on use of controlled substances by middle school students. The contributing factors investigated were demographics (gender and race), self-esteem in different modalities such as school or athletic performance, and the peer group students belong to. Each student has a binary response for whether they have used alcohol, marijuana or cigarettes which was recorded in both seventh and eighth grade. Since the data has a binary repeated measures response, generalized estimating equations (GEE) in a logistic regression setting is a good way to …

Skill Assessment And Optimization Of The Third Generation Wave Models For Applications In Gulf Of Mexico, Seyed Mostafa Siadatmousavi
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Numerical phase-averaged wave models are the best option to obtain the spatial and temporal distribution of the wave energy over a large domain, such as the Gulf of Mexico. Parallel implementation of unstructured SWAN and WAVEWATCH-III were engaged in this research to evaluate the performance of third generation wave models for different conditions. Met-ocean data from a network of NDBC buoys and WAVCIS stations were used to assess the predictive skills of the wave models. Deep water wave energy dissipation formulations were carefully analyzed and modified to improve the accuracy of the bulk wave parameters. Moreover, the importance of the …
Searches For Gravitational Waves From Perturbed Black Holes In Data From Ligo Detectors, Sarah Elizabeth Caudill
Searches For Gravitational Waves From Perturbed Black Holes In Data From Ligo Detectors, Sarah Elizabeth Caudill
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Black hole perturbation theory predicts that a perturbed black hole will emit gravitational waves in a superposition of quasi-normal modes. Various astrophysical processes can produce such a black hole including the merger of two compact binary neutron stars or black holes. The final form of the waveform from such a system is known as a ringdown. We discuss the search through data from LIGO's fifth science run for ringdown gravitational waves from intermediate mass black holes using a matched filtering pipeline. We outline the improvements to the pipeline since LIGO's fourth science run including the creation of a fully automated …
Recurrent Novae And Type Ia Supernova Progenitors, Ashley Sara Pagnotta
Recurrent Novae And Type Ia Supernova Progenitors, Ashley Sara Pagnotta
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
We investigated two types of stellar explosions, recurrent novae (RNe) and Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia). SNe Ia are the most useful distance markers in astrophysics, but we do not know the identity of their progenitor systems. RNe are good progenitor candidates that consist of a white dwarf (WD) that accretes material from a companion star. The material builds on the surface of the WD until a runaway thermonuclear eruption is triggered, which ejects the accreted material and causes the system to brighten dramatically. We studied the demographics of the nova population and concluded that approximately 25% of classical novae …
An Analysis Of Change In Policy Context Regarding Corexit Dispersant Use Following The Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill, Kelly Arceneaux
An Analysis Of Change In Policy Context Regarding Corexit Dispersant Use Following The Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill, Kelly Arceneaux
LSU Master's Theses
On April 20, 2010, an explosion on the offshore drilling platform Deepwater Horizon located in the Gulf of Mexico resulted in the largest oil spill in U.S. history. The subsequent use of massive amounts of chemical dispersants near the Gulf floor, an untested method, led to great controversy regarding the regulation, use, and toxicity of dispersants of the COREXIT family of products, as well as of dispersants in general. This study compares dispersant (COREXIT brand products in particular) regulation and use in the United States, Norway and the United Kingdom; the latter two countries are among the largest oil producers …

Optimal Production And Delivery Scheduling Models For A Supply Chain System Of Deteriorating Items, Bingqing Wu
LSU Master's Theses
The market is varying from minute to minute nowadays. Increase cooperation and pursue the optimal interest of the integrated supply chain become a more effective way than act alone in the competition. In this research, an integrated inventory policy between singleproducer and multi-buyer is developed and two inventory models are built. The first model extends the research of Lin and Lin (2007) by changing the single-buyer system to the multibuyers one. Both backorder of buyers and deteriorating items of each party (producer’s level, buyers’ level, and during transport) are considered herein. The second model is based on the research of …
Effects Of Mimic Artificial Oyster Reefs On The Ecology Of Juvenile Fishes In Marsh Ponds: A Before-After-Control-Impact Analysis, Steven B. Garner
Effects Of Mimic Artificial Oyster Reefs On The Ecology Of Juvenile Fishes In Marsh Ponds: A Before-After-Control-Impact Analysis, Steven B. Garner
LSU Master's Theses
I sought to assess the enhancement potential of mimic artificial oyster reefs (MAORs) on trophic dynamics of juvenile estuarine fishes in marsh ponds. Tropic dynamics were investigated by determining the impacts of MAOR addition on meiofauna and macrofauna and then comparing these results to the gut contents and condition of four abundant estuarine fishes: Atlantic croaker (Micropogonias undulatus), bay whiff (Citharichthys spilopterus), sand seatrout (Cynoscion arenarius), and pinfish (Lagodon rhomboides). Samples were collected every other month for two years (March 2009 – 11) employing a Before-After-Control-Impact (BACI) design. Halfway through the experiment (March 2010), two mud sites in two marsh …
Water Quality Dynamics Of Low-Gradient, Headwater Streams In A Timber-Industry Dominated Watershed In Louisiana, Abram Atys Dasilva
Water Quality Dynamics Of Low-Gradient, Headwater Streams In A Timber-Industry Dominated Watershed In Louisiana, Abram Atys Dasilva
LSU Master's Theses
Timber harvesting can degrade the quality of adjacent water bodies, an important concern for Louisiana, nearly 50% of which is forested, and in which the forest industry is the second-largest manufacturing employer. To protect valuable freshwater resources in Louisiana, a manual of best management practices (BMPs) was published in 2000 describing techniques for limiting forestry-caused water quality degradation. While these BMPs are widely implemented, their effectiveness in protecting water quality is largely unknown. To determine the effectiveness of these BMPs, this thesis research conducted three studies to address timber harvest BMP effectiveness on protection of stream dissolved oxygen, metabolism, and …
Developing A Geospatial Protocol For Coral Epizootiology, Jennifer Anne Lentz
Developing A Geospatial Protocol For Coral Epizootiology, Jennifer Anne Lentz
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
This dissertation explores how geographic information systems (GIS) and spatial statistics, specifically the techniques used to map, detect, and spatially analyze disease epidemics, could be used to advance our understanding of coral reef health. Given that different types of spatial analysis, as well as different parameter settings within each analysis, can produce noticeably different results, poor selection or improper use of a given technique would likely lead to inaccurate representations of the spatial distribution and false interpretations of the disease. For this reason, I performed a comprehensive review of the following types of exploratory spatial data analysis (ESDA): mapping and …
Modeling Gopher Tortoise (Gopherus Polyphemus) Habitat In A Fire-Dependnent Ecosystem In North Florida, Christina Legleu
Modeling Gopher Tortoise (Gopherus Polyphemus) Habitat In A Fire-Dependnent Ecosystem In North Florida, Christina Legleu
LSU Master's Theses
Gopher tortoise (Gopherus polyphemus) populations have declined with longleaf pine (Pinus palustris) ecosystems across their historic range. The influence of gopher tortoise burrows on co-inhabiting plants and animals necessitates an understanding of how landscape features and management practices influence gopher tortoise presence, absence, and abandonment. In this study, naïve gopher tortoise burrow encounter rates from a line transect distance sampling (LTDS) pilot study were used for two methods of modeling gopher tortoise habitat. In Chapter 1, naïve encounter rates were tested for a linear correlation to a HSI model created from three ranked geographic information system (GIS) landscape variables. Initial …
Entanglement, Uncertainty And Relativity In Fundamental Mechanics With An Application In Qkd, Christopher David Richardson
Entanglement, Uncertainty And Relativity In Fundamental Mechanics With An Application In Qkd, Christopher David Richardson
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
In this dissertation I will probe the innate uncertainty of quantum mechanics. After deriving the necessary tools I will tackle Popper's experiment, a long misunderstood thought experiment with recent experimental results. I will then discuss how uncertainty changes when making measurements from different relativistic reference frames and resolve some on the tension between quantum mechanics and relativity. Finally I utilize the practical aspect of quantum uncertainty and describe a practical quantum key distribution scheme.

The control group was taught by traditional instruction through the use of lecture, note-taking, and textbook guided assignments. The experimental group was taught by …
On The Witt Groups Of Schemes, Jeremy Allen Jacobson
On The Witt Groups Of Schemes, Jeremy Allen Jacobson
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
We consider two questions about the Witt groups of schemes: the first is the question of finite generation of the shifted Witt groups of a smooth variety over a finite field; the second is the Gersten conjecture. Regarding the first, we prove that the shifted Witt groups of curves and surfaces are finite, and that finite generation of the motivic cohomology groups with mod 2 coefficients implies finite generation of the Witt groups. Regarding the second, we prove the Gersten conjecture for the Witt groups in the case of a local ring that is essentially smooth over a discrete valuation …
Design And Optimization Of 2.5 Dimension Porous Media Micromodel For Nanosensor Flow Experiments, Saade Alexis Bou-Mikael
Design And Optimization Of 2.5 Dimension Porous Media Micromodel For Nanosensor Flow Experiments, Saade Alexis Bou-Mikael
LSU Master's Theses
Micromodels are used to visualize and study pore-scale phenomena such as immiscible displacements in porous media, foam flow behavior, and CO2 flooding. The understanding gained from these experiments can be used to develop models to predict future behavior of the reservoir. Most micromodels are constructed using lithography techniques that are restricted to 2D patterns that require artificial generation or manipulation of images to develop connected micromodels. Characteristics innate to the original rock structure are often lost or skewed in developing micromodels that bear little resemblance to the original media. Alternative microfabrication techniques using a micromilling tool have allowed us to …
Stability Problems In Constrained Pendulum Systems And Time-Delayed Systems, Prashanth Ramachandran
Stability Problems In Constrained Pendulum Systems And Time-Delayed Systems, Prashanth Ramachandran
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
In this dissertation, we study the boundary of stability of a class of linear mechanical systems as a function of a parameter. We consider two different systems under this class: a constrained double pendulum connected by a rigid rod and a state-feedback-controlled mechanical system with time delay. In the first system, the destabilizing parameter is the distance between the supports of the two pendulums. In the second system, the destabilizing parameter is the time delay. In the constrained double pendulum system, linear perturbation analysis is used to determine the natural frequency of the system. Our analysis reveals a zone of …

Population Dynamics Of The Eastern Oyster In The Northern Gulf Of Mexico, Benjamin S. Eberline
LSU Master's Theses
This project examined the economically and ecologically valuable eastern oyster (Crassostrea virginica) in the Northern Gulf of Mexico using field and laboratory experiments. Specifically, this project focused on natural rates of settlement, growth, and mortality in a variety of temperature and salinity regimes within Breton Sound, LA. Seed and market sized oysters in cages resting on the bottom, as well as settlement tiles, were monitored at four sites in Breton Sound, LA, along what is typically a salinity gradient ranging from ~5 to ~20. In April 2010, the Caernarvon Freshwater Diversion was fully opened with the goal of minimizing the …
