Multi-Protein Detection Of Endothelial Cell Inflammation And Single Cells' Heterogeneity Study, Jingwen Chai Jan 2012

Multi-Protein Detection Of Endothelial Cell Inflammation And Single Cells' Heterogeneity Study, Jingwen Chai

Master's Theses and Capstones

Endothelial inflammation plays major roles in all phases of atherosclerotic process and both innate immunity and endothelial adhesion molecules contribute to endothelial inflammation. In this thesis, there are three main parts regarding the endothelial cell inflammation and multiple protein detection. In the first part, we applied multiple antibodies (Abs) to measure changes in expression levels of six proteins in response to inflammatory stimulation, and we observed different dynamic behaviors in them. In the second part, we applied emission fingerprinting technique provided by Zeiss LSM 510 META detector, and achieved the concurrent detection of ten proteins expressed on the same endothelial …

Metals And Bacteria Partitioning To Various Size Particles In Ballona Creek Storm Water Runoff, John Dorsey, Jeffrey S. Brown, Eric D. Stein, Drew Ackerman, Jessica Lyon, Patrick M. Carter Jan 2012

Metals And Bacteria Partitioning To Various Size Particles In Ballona Creek Storm Water Runoff, John Dorsey, Jeffrey S. Brown, Eric D. Stein, Drew Ackerman, Jessica Lyon, Patrick M. Carter

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Works

Many storm water best management practice (BMP) devices function primarily by capturing particulate matter to take advantage of the well-documented association between storm water particles and pollutants. The hydrodynamic separation or settling methods used by most BMP devices are most effective at capturing medium to large particles; however, these may not be the most predominant particles associated with urban runoff. The present study examined particle size distribution in storm water runoff from an urban watershed in southern California and investigated the pollutant-particle associations of metals (Cu, Pb, Ni, and Zn) and bacteria (enterococci and Escherichia coli). During small storm events …

Standards-Based Grading: An Alternative To Score-Based Assessment, Matthew T. Siniawski, Adam Carberry, John David N. Dionisio

Computer Science Faculty Works

Standards-based grading involves assessment of student development towards achieving the course objectives throughout the duration of a course. Final course grades are then determined based on students’ overall development towards achieving the course objectives. There have been no studies to date that investigate this specific system for undergraduate science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education. This groundbreaking study involves the implementation of standards-based grading in a sophomore-level undergraduate course in Mechanics of Materials. The goals of this study are: 1) to obtain insight in how to best implement standards-based grading in an undergraduate STEM course, and 2) to obtain a …

Physical Activity In Childhood May Be The Key To Optimizing Lifespan Skeletal Health, Hawley C. Almstedt, Katherine B. Gunter, Kathleen F. Janz

Health and Human Sciences Faculty Works

Physical activities undertaken in childhood, particularly activities which apply large forces quickly convey optimal benefits to bone mass, size, and structure. Evidence is accumulating that benefits persist well beyond activity cessation. This review examines the potential for early childhood activity to improve bone mineralization and structure and explores childhood activity as prevention for osteoporosis in later life.

Spatial Graphs With Local Knots, Erica Flapan, Blake Mellor, Ramin Naimi

Mathematics, Statistics and Data Science Faculty Works

It is shown that for any locally knotted edge of a 3-connected graph in S3, there is a ball that contains all of the local knots of that edge and is unique up to an isotopy setwise fixing the graph. This result is applied to the study of topological symmetry groups of graphs embedded in S3.

A New Topological Perspective On Quantization In Physics, Hooman Rahimizadeh, Stan Sholar, Michael Berg

Mathematics, Statistics and Data Science Faculty Works

We propose a new characterization of classical quantization in physics in terms of sheaf cohomology on the site of spacetime as a smooth 4-manifold. The perspective of sheaf cohomology is motivated by a presentation of the Aharonov-Bohm effect in terms of the integration of differential forms.

The Double Cover Of The Real Symplectic Group And A Theme From Feynman’S Quantum Mechanics, Michael Berg

Mathematics, Statistics and Data Science Faculty Works

We present a direct connection between the 2-cocycle defining the double cover of the real symplectic group and a Feynman path integral describing the time evolution of a quantum mechanical system.

Enhancements Of Rack Counting Invariants Via Dynamical Cocycles, Alissa S. Crans, Sam Nelson, Aparna Sarkar Jan 2012

Enhancements Of Rack Counting Invariants Via Dynamical Cocycles, Alissa S. Crans, Sam Nelson, Aparna Sarkar

Mathematics, Statistics and Data Science Faculty Works

We introduce the notion of N-reduced dynamical cocycles and use these objects to define enhancements of the rack counting invariant for classical and virtual knots and links. We provide examples to show that the new invariants are not determined by the rack counting invariant, the Jones polynomial or the generalized Alexander polynomial.

The Effectiveness Of Blended Instruction In Core Postsecondary Mathematics Courses, Anna E. Bargagliotti, Fernanda Botelho, Jim Gleason, John Haddock, Alistair Windsor

Mathematics, Statistics and Data Science Faculty Works

Most students in U.S. universities are required to take a collection of core courses regardless of their degree or major. These courses are known as "general education" courses. The general education requirements typically include at least one mathematics course. Unfortunately each year hundreds of thousands of students in the US do not succeed in these general education mathematics courses causing them to act as a barrier to degree completion. Low student success rates in these courses are pervasive, and it is well documented that the U.S. needs to improve student success and retention in general education mathematics courses.

Convergence Of A Steepest Descent Algorithm For Ratio Cut Clustering, Xavier Bresson, Thomas Laurent, David Uminsky, James H. Von Brecht Jan 2012

Convergence Of A Steepest Descent Algorithm For Ratio Cut Clustering, Xavier Bresson, Thomas Laurent, David Uminsky, James H. Von Brecht

Mathematics, Statistics and Data Science Faculty Works

Unsupervised clustering of scattered, noisy and high-dimensional data points is an important and difficult problem. Tight continuous relaxations of balanced cut problems have recently been shown to provide excellent clustering results. In this paper, we present an explicit-implicit gradient flow scheme for the relaxed ratio cut problem, and prove that the algorithm converges to a critical point of the energy. We also show the efficiency of the proposed algorithm on the two moons dataset.

How Well Do The Nsf Funded Elementary Mathematics Curricula Align With The Gaise Report Recommendations?, Anna E. Bargagliotti

Mathematics, Statistics and Data Science Faculty Works

Statistics and probability have become an integral part of mathematics education. Therefore it is important to understand whether curricular materials adequately represent statistical ideas. The Guidelines for Assessment and Instruction in Statistics Education (GAISE) report (Franklin, Kader, Mewborn, Moreno, Peck, Perry, & Scheaffer, 2007), endorsed by the American Statistical Association, provides a two-dimensional (process and level) framework for statistical learning. This paper examines whether the statistics content contained in the NSF funded elementary curricula Investigations in Number, Data, and Space, Math Trailblazers, and Everyday Mathematics aligns with the GAISE recommendations. Results indicate that there are differences in the approaches used …

A Comparative Study For Performance Evaluation Of Sit-To-Stand Task With Body Worn Sensor And Existing Laboratory Methods, Rahul Soangra, Thurmon E. Lockhart

Physical Therapy Faculty Articles and Research

Human movement such as sit-to-stand (STS) is one of the most fundamental and essential movement among daily living activities. Elderly who are unable to stand are severely limited in daily activities and rely on others for their care. In the coming next two decades about 20% of US population will be above the age of 65 years, and considering ever-increasing elderly population and health care expenses, the rehabilitation of functionally limited elderly is becoming a topic of greater concern. Clinically STS movement is looked upon with great interest, such as its analysis is meaningful in order to evaluate motor control …

Chemistry & Biochemistry Faculty Publications

Evaluating the representation of processes controlling tropical and subtropical tropospheric relative humidity (RH) in atmospheric general circulation models (GCMs) is crucial to assess the credibility of predicted climate changes. GCMs have long exhibited a moist bias in the tropical and subtropical mid and upper troposphere, which could be due to the mis-representation of cloud processes or of the large-scale circulation, or to excessive diffusion during water vapor transport. The goal of this study is to use observations of the water vapor isotopic ratio to understand the cause of this bias. We compare the three-dimensional distribution of the water vapor isotopic …

Quantum Modeling Of Dark Matter In Galactic Halos, Shane Charles Spivey Jan 2012

Quantum Modeling Of Dark Matter In Galactic Halos, Shane Charles Spivey

Physics Dissertations - Archive

Eighty years after its initial discovery, the nature of dark matter remains a mystery. Contrary to observational evidence, simulations of dark matter halos predict cuspy density profiles and an abundant population of dwarf galaxies. Increasingly refined measurements of the dark matter halos in galaxies reveal a large variety of halo shapes and sizes, and so far no universal profile has been able to incorporate them all. Among the numerous dark matter candidates, models of so-called quantum cold dark matter (QCDM) have the unique potential to address the many disparities between theory and observation.QCDM postulates that dark matter is composed primarily …

Defect Studies In Cu-Based P-Type Transparent Conducting Oxides, Fnu Ameena Jan 2012

Defect Studies In Cu-Based P-Type Transparent Conducting Oxides, Fnu Ameena

Physics Dissertations - Archive

Among other intrinsic open-volume defects, copper vacancy (VCu) has been theoretically identified as the major acceptor in p-type Cu-based semiconducting transparent oxides, which has potential as low-cost photovoltaic absorbers in semi-transparent solar cells. A series of positron annihilation experiments with pure Cu, Cu2O, and CuO presented strong presence of VCu and its complexes in the copper oxides. The lifetime data also showed that the density of VCu was becoming higher as the oxidation state of Cu increased which was consistent with the decrease in the formation energy of VCu. Doppler broadening measurements further indicated that electrons with low momentum made …

Biochemical Actions Of A Novel Cis-Terpenone, Lin Zhang

Theses and Dissertations

Abstract BIOCHEMICAL ACTIONS OF A NOVEL CIS-TERPENONE By Lin Zhang, Ph.D. A dissertation submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at Virginia Commonwealth University. Virginia Commonwealth University, 2012 Director: Qibing Zhou, Ph.D Assistant Professor Department of Chemistry

Quinone methides are reactive species due to their electrophilicity, and natural quinone methide analogs have broad biological activities. Based on known actions of cytochrome P450 enzymes, we hypothesized that trans-terpenones can be metabolized in cells to form a cascade of metabolite products, which may be biologically active due to the generation of quinine and quinone methide …
