Mental Illness And Stigmatization, Struther Louise Van Horn Jan 2012

Mental Illness And Stigmatization, Struther Louise Van Horn

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between mental illness and stigmatization. For most of the twentieth century, popular attitudes towards the mentally ill were overtly negative and stigmatizing. In the 1970s-1980s, however, a putative shift in perceptions--thought to be the result of increased public knowledge about psychological disorders--purportedly diminished the stigma attached to mental illness. Using race, gender, and age as moderating variables, this study draws upon data from the recent 2006 General Social Survey to reexamine more current attitudes by the public towards those with mental illness and how it affects the desire for social …

The Hammer-And-Nail Phenomenon In Mathematics Education, Kien H. Lim Jan 2012

The Hammer-And-Nail Phenomenon In Mathematics Education, Kien H. Lim

Departmental Papers (Math)

"For a person with a hammer, everything looks like a nail" is a proverb that can be used to highlight the phenomenon that students tend to rely on familiar ideas as opposed to taking time to think about and analyse a problem. Presented in this theoretical paper is the usefulness of the hammer-and-nail metaphor, other related theoretical constructs, pedagogical causes of student impulsive behaviours, and pedagogical suggestions for addressing them.

Trap Efficiency Of A Silted Prairie Reservoir: Rapidan Reservoir, Blue Earth County, Minnesota, Katherine Brosch Rassmussen Jan 2012

Trap Efficiency Of A Silted Prairie Reservoir: Rapidan Reservoir, Blue Earth County, Minnesota, Katherine Brosch Rassmussen

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

Rapidan Dam and Reservoir are located along the Blue Earth River south of Mankato, Minnesota. The dam was constructed in 1911 as a source of hydroelectric power to supplement the surroundings communities. Currently, the reservoir is heavily silted and provides little hydroelectric benefit while proving costly to maintain. This study (1) defines the sedimentary, geomorphic, stream flow and suspended load characteristics of the reservoir for 2008-2009 and (2) compares these parameters with those available from 1985 (23 years prior). Stream gauging and sediment sampling took place in 2008 and 2009 at three monitoring locations (two upstream and one downstream of …

Informal Math Education Using Origami To Teach Elementary School Students Math Concepts, Gina Fawks Jan 2012

Informal Math Education Using Origami To Teach Elementary School Students Math Concepts, Gina Fawks

Theses & ETDs

There is a disconnect that students have between what they learn in the math classroom and what they understand and can do in the 'real' world. Informal math education can be used to bridge that gap. A specific type of informal math education is the use of origami to teach math concepts. I worked with forty-five elementary school students at the Roy McBean Boys and Girls Club of America. I did three origami projects covering a variety of math concepts that students in kindergarten through fifth grade should know or learn based on Florida Sunshine Standards ([Anonymous] Florida 2010) with …

Making A Difference: Measuring The Effectiveness Of Mississippi Teacher Corps Teachers As Compared To Non-Mississippi Teacher Corps Teachers, James Benjamin Guest

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The Mississippi Teacher Corps (MTC) was founded in 1989. Over the past 23 years more than 500 MTC participants have taught in critical-needs schools in Mississippi. The purpose of this study was to examine the effectiveness of Mississippi Teacher Corps teachers as compared to non-Mississippi Teacher Corps teachers. The method of research was a quantitative analysis of standardized test scores from the "Rural County School District" for school year 2009–2010. The analysis shothat there is no significant difference in mean test scores of students who are taught by MTC teachers as compared to non-MTC teachers but that, in both the …

Multihierarchical Documents And Fine-Grained Access Control, Neil Moore Jan 2012

Multihierarchical Documents And Fine-Grained Access Control, Neil Moore

Theses and Dissertations--Computer Science

This work presents new models and algorithms for creating, modifying, and controlling access to complex text. The digitization of texts opens new opportunities for preservation, access, and analysis, but at the same time raises questions regarding how to represent and collaboratively edit such texts. Two issues of particular interest are modelling the relationships of markup (annotations) in complex texts, and controlling the creation and modification of those texts. This work addresses and connects these issues, with emphasis on data modelling, algorithms, and computational complexity; and contributes new results in these areas of research.

Although hierarchical models of text and markup …

Nonresonance On The Boundary And Strong Solutions Of Elliptic Equations With Nonlinear Boundary Conditions, Nsoki Mavinga, M. N. Nkashama Jan 2012

Nonresonance On The Boundary And Strong Solutions Of Elliptic Equations With Nonlinear Boundary Conditions, Nsoki Mavinga, M. N. Nkashama

Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Works

We deal with the solvability of linear second order elliptic partial differential equations with nonlinear boundary conditions by imposing asymptotic nonresonance conditions of nonuniform type with respect to the Steklov spectrum on the boundary nonlinearity. Unlike some recent approaches in the literature for problems with nonlinear boundary conditions, we cast the problem in terms of nonlinear compact perturbations of the identity on appropriate trace spaces in order to prove the existence of strong solutions. The proofs are based on a priori estimates for possible solutions to a homotopy on suitable trace spaces and topological degree arguments.

Dynamics And Collective State Of Ordered Magnetic Nanoparticles In Mesoporous Systems, Jose M. Vargas, Abhishek Srivastava, Ezra Garza, Gabriel Caruntu, Amin Yourdkhani, Leonard Spinu

Chemistry Faculty Publications

In this paper we present a study of superparamagnetic and superspin glass states of magnetic nanoparticles confined in mesoporous templates. Characterization utilizes dynamic magnetization techniques, ac susceptibility, and ferromagnetic resonance, in addition to dc magnetization curves. In order to differentiate between the intrinsic and collective properties, we considered three magnetic nanoparticles systems with comparable size, shape, and crystallinity but with different intrinsic magnetocrystalline anisotropy. Further, confinement effects were studied by considering three different geometries of nanoparticles. The effect of the geometrical confinement and intrinsic anisotropy of the nanoparticles are discussed based on known theoretical predictions.

Synthesis And Piezoelectric Response Of Cubic And Spherical Linbo3 Nanocrystals, Debasish Mohanty, Girija S. Chaubey, Amin Yourdkhani, Shiva Adireddy, Gabriel Caruntu, John B. Wiley

Chemistry Faculty Publications

Methods have been developed for the shape-selective synthesis of ferroelectric LiNbO3 nanoparticles. Decomposition of the single-source precursor, LiNb(O-Et)6, in the absence of surfactants, can reproducibly lead to either cube- or sphere-like nanoparticles. X-Ray diffraction shows that the LiNbO3 nanoparticles are rhombohedral (R3c). Sample properties were examined by piezoresponse force microscopy (PFM) and Raman where both sets of nanoparticles exhibit ferroelectricity. The longitudinal piezoelectric coefficients, d33, varied with shape where the largest value was exhibited in the nanocubes (17 pm V21 for the cubes versus 12 pm V21 for spheres).

Chemistry Faculty Publications

The present work is aimed at fabricating bi-layer aluminum nitride (AlN)/cobalt iron (CoFe) magnetoelectric (ME) thin films using reactive rf/dc magnetron sputtering. A systematic study on structural, morphological, piezoelectric, magnetic and magnetoelectric properties is undertaken. Except for AlN and CoFe, no other phases were detected with the layer thicknesses measured at160 and 130 nm, respectively. The rms roughness measured was around 2.096 nm for AlN and 1.806 nm for CoFe. The bi-layer thin film exhibited both good piezoelectricity and ferromagnetism, as well as ME effect. A 52% change observed in the piezoelectric signal, measured using magnetic field assisted piezoresponse force …

Finding Room For Fairness In Formalism--The Sliding Scale Approach To Unconscionability, Melissa T. Lonegrass Jan 2012

Finding Room For Fairness In Formalism--The Sliding Scale Approach To Unconscionability, Melissa T. Lonegrass

Journal Articles

This Article evaluates the sliding scale approach to unconscionability, defends its use, and advocates for its continued and expanded application to consumer standard form contracts. Part I describes the sliding scale approach and its recent popularity in state courts, thereby filling a gap in the scholarly doctrine, which has to date failed to fully examine this trend. Parts II and III defend the sliding scale approach, praising its potential to align the unconscionability analysis with interdisciplinary research regarding consumer behavior and to balance formalist concerns about judicial regulation of unfair terms in standard form contracts. Finally, Part IV calls for …

The Legacy Of Gordon Arthur Riley (1911–1985) And The Development Of Mathematical Models In Biological Oceanography, Thomas R. Anderson, Wendy C. Gentleman

Journal of Marine Research

Gordon Arthur Riley (1911–1985) is remembered for his pioneering work in the development of marine ecosystem models during the mid-20th century. Using models that were necessarily simple because of the limited understanding of plankton physiology at the time, as well as the fact that calculations had to be done by hand, Riley studied the processes that control plankton stocks, production, and nutrient cycling, notably at Georges Bank. His great achievement lay not so much in the simulation of plankton dynamics per se, but rather in bringing to the fore the concept of using modeling as a means of explaining …

Biology, Chemistry, and Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles and Research

Characterization of the error associated with satellite rainfall estimates is a necessary component of deterministic and probabilistic frameworks involving spaceborne passive and active microwave measurements for applications ranging from water budget studies to forecasting natural hazards related to extreme rainfall events. The authors focus here on the error structure of NASA's Tropical Rainfall Measurement Mission (TRMM) Precipitation Radar (PR) quantitative precipitation estimation (QPE) at ground. The problem is addressed by comparison of PR QPEs with reference values derived from ground-based measurements using NOAA/NSSL ground radar based National Mosaic and QPE system (NMQ/Q2). A preliminary investigation of this subject has been …

Microinvestment Disputes, Perry Bechky Jan 2012

Microinvestment Disputes, Perry Bechky

Faculty Articles

Salini v. Morocco sparked one of the liveliest controversies in the dynamic field of international investment disputes. Salini held that the word “investment” in the Convention establishing the International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID), although undefined, has an objective meaning that limits the ability of member states to submit disputes to ICSID arbitration. The Salini debate is central to this field because it shapes the nature, purpose, and volume of ICSID arbitration—and also determines who gets to decide those matters. In particular, Salini’s decision to include “a contribution to development” as an element of its objective definition of …
