Identification Of System Parameters For End Milling Force Simulation With Tool And Workpiece Compliance, Min Hyong Koh Jan 2012

Identification Of System Parameters For End Milling Force Simulation With Tool And Workpiece Compliance, Min Hyong Koh

Master's Theses and Capstones

A Smart Machining System being developed at UNH has the potential to produce high quality machined parts in minimum time. Integral to the success of this system is the ability to accurately simulate cutting forces. In this current work, a time-domain milling simulation is developed with a tool-workpiece compliance model to predict dynamic cutting forces. The simulation computes milling forces, tool deflections, and workpiece vibration (surface waviness).

The accuracy of the simulation depends on finding reliable system parameters. In this work, an end milling parameter identification method is developed using linear predictive coding (LPC) and Extended Kalman Filtering. The milling …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Aim: To report the prevalence of nocturia. Associated risk factors and bother in various age groups (by decade) were evaluated in order to determine the characteristics of individuals who may need medical help. Materials and methods: To estimate the extent to which patients were bothered relative to nocturia in various age groups (by decade), a descriptive figure, the "bother index," was used. The bother index was calculated by dividing the number of individuals reporting a bother score higher than a symptom score by the number of individuals reporting a bother score lower than a symptom score in the same age …

Learning Theory And Online Technologies, By Linda Harasim. Routledge: New York, 2012 (Book Review), Diane Carver

STEMPS Faculty Publications

[First Paragraph] Learning Theory and Online Technologies presents readers with an outline of the current position of online learning, beginning with an historical review of e-learning and learning theories, and proposes a model of e-learning solutions for today's learners. Written by Linda Harasim, professor of Simon Fraser University in Burnaby, British Columbia, the book includes examples of how the online collaborative learning theory can be applied in an online course and provides case studies of how the theory is being implemented in educational institutions.

On The Class Rsi Of J-Contractive Functions Intertwining Solutions Of Linear Differential Equations, Daniel Alpay, Andrey Melnikov, Victor Vinnikov Jan 2012

On The Class Rsi Of J-Contractive Functions Intertwining Solutions Of Linear Differential Equations, Daniel Alpay, Andrey Melnikov, Victor Vinnikov

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

In this paper we extend and solve in the class of functions RSI mentioned in the title, a number of problems originally set for the class RS of rational functions contractive in the open right-half plane, and unitary on the imaginary line with respect to some preassigned self-adjoint matrix. The problems we consider include the Schur algorithm, the partial realization problem and the Nevanlinna-Pick interpolation problem. The arguments rely on the one-to-one correspondence between elements in a given subclass of RSI and elements in RS. Another important tool in the arguments is a new result pertaining to the classical tangential …

Response To Griffiths, Matthew S. Leifer

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

"First of all, I would like to thank Prof. Griffith for his comments. The exchange has reminded me of the series of letters that appeared in Physics Today following the publication of an article by Chandralekha Singh, Mario Belloni, and Wolfgang Christian on improving the teaching of undergraduate quantum mechanics (see http://ptonline.aip.org/ journals/doc/PHTOAD-ft/vol_60/iss_3/8_1.shtml). In those responses, both Griffiths and Travis Norsen argued that students’ understanding of quantum mechanics would be vastly improved if they were taught more about the foundations of quantum theory, and I wholeheartedly agree with that sentiment. The thing is, Griffiths argued vociferously that this should be …

Cotorsion Pairs In C(R-Mod), Diego Bravo, Edgar E. Enochs, Alina Iacob, Overtoun M. G. Jenda, Juan Rada Jan 2012

Cotorsion Pairs In C(R-Mod), Diego Bravo, Edgar E. Enochs, Alina Iacob, Overtoun M. G. Jenda, Juan Rada

Mathematical Sciences: Faculty Publications

In [8] Salce introduced the notion of a co-torsion pair (A, B) in the category of abelian groups. But his definitions and basic results carry over to more general abelian categories and have proved useful in a variety of settings. In this article we will consider complete cotorsion pairs (C, D)in the category C(R-Mod) of complexes of left R-modules over some ring R.If(C, D) is such a pair, and if C is closed un-der taking suspensions, we will show when we regard K(C) and K(D) as subcategories of the homotopy category K(R-Mod), then the embedding functors K(C) → K(R-Mod) and …

Weighted Generalized Beta Distribution Of The Second Kind, Yuan Ye, Broderick O. Oluyede, Marvis Pararai Jan 2012

Weighted Generalized Beta Distribution Of The Second Kind, Yuan Ye, Broderick O. Oluyede, Marvis Pararai

Mathematical Sciences: Faculty Publications

In this paper, a new class of weighted generalized beta distribution of the second kind (WGB2) is presented. The construction makes use of the "conservability approach" which includes the size or length-biased distribution as a special case. The class of WGB2 is used as descriptive models for the distribution of income. The results that are presented generalizes the generalized beta distribution of second kind (GB2). The properties of these distributions including behavior of hazard functions, moments, variance, coefficients of variation, skewness and kurtosis are obtained. The moments of other weighted distributions that are related to WGB2 are obtained. Other important …

Instructional Technology Usage And Implications For Student Academic Achievement And Further Success, Bradley D. Petry Jan 2012

Instructional Technology Usage And Implications For Student Academic Achievement And Further Success, Bradley D. Petry

PCOM Psychology Dissertations

The digital divide was once a term used to indicate disparity between socio-economic classes and access to digital devices. The digital divide may now more accurately indicate differences in the types of usage between members of different socio-economic classes. Differences in usage among the middle school student population may play a role in the development of critical thinking and collaborative communication. The Maryland results of the 2010 Speak Up survey – a national student survey regarding the usage of technology - were used in comparison with student respondent school district differentiation and were also compared with student state standardized test …

An Examination Of The Comorbidity Between Externalizing Disorders And Reading Disabilities In School-Age Boys, Victoria Loughman Fortuna Jan 2012

An Examination Of The Comorbidity Between Externalizing Disorders And Reading Disabilities In School-Age Boys, Victoria Loughman Fortuna

PCOM Psychology Dissertations

Our current education system uses a global method that does very little to address the concurrent cognitive, academic and social-emotional needs of the special education student. By using a single analysis, we fail to address specific deficits, including comorbidity of cognitive, academic, and socio-emotional deficits. Generalized assessments do little to address the source of the student’s problems. If these comorbid learning and social-emotional problems are addressed early on, this might reduce the incidence of antisocial and/or delinquent behaviors and lead to greater academic success. In an attempt to further investigate the relationships between academic, (i.e., reading) and emotional/behavioral systems, the …

Orphan Works As Grist For The Data Mill, Matthew Sag Jan 2012

Orphan Works As Grist For The Data Mill, Matthew Sag

Faculty Publications & Other Works

The phenomenon of library digitization in general, and the digitization of so-called“orphan works” in particular, raises many important copyright law questions. However, as this Article explains, correctly understood, there is no orphan works problem for certain kinds of library digitization.

The distinction between expressive and non-expressive works is already well recognized in copyright law as the gatekeeper to copyright protection—novels are protected by copyright, while telephone books and other uncreative compilations of data are not. The same distinction should generally be made in relation to potential acts of infringement.

Preserving the functional force of the idea-expression distinction in the digital …

Spin Coupling By Conduction Electrons Explored By Double Time Green's Functions, William Robert Decker Jan 2012

Spin Coupling By Conduction Electrons Explored By Double Time Green's Functions, William Robert Decker

Physics Theses - Archive

The impurities containing unfilled d or f shells may have localized magnetic moments in nonmagnetic metals, semiconductors, and superconductors under certain conditions. These localized moments interact with each other through the spin polarization field of conduction electrons. The indirect coupling between magnetic impurities is referred to as the Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) interaction which is important in describing the magnetic and thermodynamic properties of magnetic nanostructures. The interaction may be expressed as a long range oscillatory function. I explored the properties of the indirect exchange interaction between localized moments in different dimensions using the s-d model and the Green's functions method. An …

Atomic Adsorptions On Actinide Surfaces: Pathways To Nuclear Energy, Dayla Renee Morrison Jan 2012

Atomic Adsorptions On Actinide Surfaces: Pathways To Nuclear Energy, Dayla Renee Morrison

Physics Theses - Archive

The generalized gradient approximation (GGA) to density functional theory (DFT) and hybrid density functional theory have been used to compute the layer-by-layer properties of γ-uranium (γ-U) in the (100) symmetry. Guided by bulk results which have been analyzed at six different levels of theory, the surface calculations have been performed at the non-magnetic level including spin-orbit coupling. The ground state bulk lattice constant and bulk modulus are found to be 3.46 A and 113.75 GPa, respectively at the non-magnetic with spin-orbit coupling level (NM+SOC) of theory. The monolayer displays a significant shrinking of the “effective” lattice constant of about 23.55% …

Applications Of A Laser Microbeam In The Study Of Degeneration, Regeneration, And Guidance Of Primary Cns Axons, Bryan James Black

Physics Theses - Archive

This thesis explores the applications of a near infrared (NIR) laser microbeam as a tool for manipulating primary axons by initiating femtosecond pulsed-laser plasma-mediated ablation (laser axotomy) and optical guidance. Chapter 1 briefly introduces axon morphology, growth, and the principles of axon guidance, as well as an introduction to the unique capabilities/potential provided by laser microbeams in biological research (laser-tissue interactions). Non-linear, multiphoton absorption processes are discussed in context of biological tissue ablation. In addition, we discuss specific challenges facing mammalian central nervous system (CNS) axons subsequent to injury, and comment on strategies which can be employed to mitigate, remove, …
