Faculty Bibliography 2010s
We demonstrate that single-photon as well as biphoton revivals are possible in a new class of dynamic optical systems-the so-called Glauber-Fock oscillator lattices. In these arrays, both Bloch-like oscillations and dynamic delocalization can occur which can be described in closed form. The bunching and antibunching response of path-entangled photons can be pre-engineered in such coupled optical arrangements, and the emulation of fermionic behavior in this family of lattices is also considered. We elucidate these effects via pertinent examples.

Linking The Transcriptional Profiles And The Physiological States Of Mycobacterium Tuberculosis During An Extended Intracellular Infection, Kyle H. Rohde, Diogo F. T. Veiga, Shannon Caldwell, Gábor Balázsi, David G. Russell
Faculty Bibliography 2010s
Intracellular pathogens such as Mycobacterium tuberculosis have evolved strategies for coping with the pressures encountered inside host cells. The ability to coordinate global gene expression in response to environmental and internal cues is one key to their success. Prolonged survival and replication within macrophages, a key virulence trait of M. tuberculosis, requires dynamic adaptation to diverse and changing conditions within its phagosomal niche. However, the physiological adaptations during the different phases of this infection process remain poorly understood. To address this knowledge gap, we have developed a multi-tiered approach to define the temporal patterns of gene expression in M. tuberculosis …

Image Degradation Due To Surface Scattering In The Presence Of Aberrations, Narak Choi
Image Degradation Due To Surface Scattering In The Presence Of Aberrations, Narak Choi
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation focuses on the scattering phenomena by well-polished optical mirror surfaces. Specifically, predicting image degradation by surface scatter from rough mirror surfaces for a two-mirror telescope operating at extremely short wavelengths (9nm~30nm) is performed. To evaluate image quality, surface scatter is predicted from the surface metrology data and the point spread function in the presence of both surface scatter and aberrations is calculated. For predicting the scattering intensity distribution, both numerical and analytic methods are considered. Among the numerous analytic methods, the small perturbation method (classical Rayleigh-Rice surface scatter theory), the Kirchhoff approximation method (classical BeckmanKirchhoff surface scatter theory), …
The Sustainability Of Overconsumption? A Discursive Analysis Of Walmart's Sustainability Campaign, Kathleen Adams
The Sustainability Of Overconsumption? A Discursive Analysis Of Walmart's Sustainability Campaign, Kathleen Adams
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This study inquires as to whether Walmart’s sustainability campaign represents a sincere and holistic change throughout the company’s global supply chain or if it is simply a public relations campaign which caters to the growing target market of “next-generation” consumers and justifies further expansion into “emerging markets”. A critical analysis of Walmart’s sustainability discourse is presented, using transcribed texts of various corporate and publicitygeared publications. Frequently utilized terms and themes are identified throughout the big-box retailer’s sustainability campaign which convey a distinctly Neoliberal ethos—a political economy which lies at the heart of current practices of institutional unsustainability—and emphasize the role …

A Production And Cost Modeling Methodology Of 2nd Generation Biofuel In The United States, David A. Poole
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The use of biofuels in the United States has increased dramatically in the last few years. The largest source of feedstock for ethanol to date has been corn. However, corn is also a vitally important food crop and is used commonly as feed for cattle and other livestock. To prevent further diversion of an important food crop to production of ethanol, there is great interest in developing commercial-scale technologies to make ethanol from non-food crops, or other suitable plant material. This is commonly referred to as biomass. A review is made of lignocellulosic sources being considered as feedstocks to produce …

Efficient And Scalable Evaluation Of Continuous, Spatio-Temporal Queries In Mobile Computing Environments, Jonathan M. Cazalas
Efficient And Scalable Evaluation Of Continuous, Spatio-Temporal Queries In Mobile Computing Environments, Jonathan M. Cazalas
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
A variety of research exists for the processing of continuous queries in large, mobile environments. Each method tries, in its own way, to address the computational bottleneck of constantly processing so many queries. For this research, we present a two-pronged approach at addressing this problem. Firstly, we introduce an efficient and scalable system for monitoring traditional, continuous queries by leveraging the parallel processing capability of the Graphics Processing Unit. We examine a naive CPU-based solution for continuous range-monitoring queries, and we then extend this system using the GPU. Additionally, with mobile communication devices becoming commodity, location-based services will become ubiquitous. …

Marzano, Waters, and McNulty (2005) conducted a meta-analysis of more than 5,000 studies and identified seven leadership behaviors that related to improved student achievement and were viewed as second-order in nature. In many cases, second-order change was needed (a) to accomplish the student achievement improvements necessary to attain …
Quantum Algorithms For: Quantum Phase Estimation, Approximation Of The Tutte Polynomial And Black-Box Structures, Hamad Ahmadi
Quantum Algorithms For: Quantum Phase Estimation, Approximation Of The Tutte Polynomial And Black-Box Structures, Hamad Ahmadi
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In this dissertation, we investigate three different problems in the field of Quantum computation. First, we discuss the quantum complexity of evaluating the Tutte polynomial of a planar graph. Furthermore, we devise a new quantum algorithm for approximating the phase of a unitary matrix. Finally, we provide quantum tools that can be utilized to extract the structure of black-box modules and algebras. While quantum phase estimation (QPE) is at the core of many quantum algorithms known to date, its physical implementation (algorithms based on quantum Fourier transform (QFT) ) is highly constrained by the requirement of high-precision controlled phase shift …

Effects Of A Reading Strategy With Digital Social Studies Texts For Eighth Grade Students, Melissa Doan Malani
Effects Of A Reading Strategy With Digital Social Studies Texts For Eighth Grade Students, Melissa Doan Malani
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Recent data indicate that only 34% of American eighth grade students are able to demonstrate grade-level proficiency with academic reading tasks (NCES, 2011). The staggering nature of statistics such as this is even more profound when considering that high level literacy skills combined with mastery of digital texts have become practical requirements for success in secondary education, post-secondary education, and virtually all vocational contexts. Despite this incongruent scenario, little research has been conducted to evaluate instructional methods and reading comprehension strategies with digital texts. To address this critical issue, the present study examined the effects of a metacognitive reading comprehension …

In this paper we present the first nightside EUV and FUV airglow limb spectra of Titan showing molecular emissions. The Cassini Ultraviolet Imaging Spectrograph (UVIS) observed photon emissions of Titan's day and night limb-airglow and disk-airglow on multiple occasions, including during an eclipse observation. The 71 airglow observations analyzed in this paper show EUV (600-1150 angstrom) and FUV (1150-1900 angstrom) atomic multiplet lines and band emissions arising from either photoelectron induced fluorescence and solar photo-fragmentation of molecular nitrogen (N-2) or excitation by magnetosphere plasma. The altitude of the peak UV emissions on the limb during daylight occurred inside the thermosphere …
Robust Quantification Of Polymerase Chain Reactions Using Global Fitting, Ana C. Carr, Sean D. Moore
Robust Quantification Of Polymerase Chain Reactions Using Global Fitting, Ana C. Carr, Sean D. Moore
Faculty Bibliography 2010s
Background: Quantitative polymerase chain reactions (qPCR) are used to monitor relative changes in very small amounts of DNA. One drawback to qPCR is reproducibility: measuring the same sample multiple times can yield data that is so noisy that important differences can be dismissed. Numerous analytical methods have been employed that can extract the relative template abundance between samples. However, each method is sensitive to baseline assignment and to the unique shape profiles of individual reactions, which gives rise to increased variance stemming from the analytical procedure itself. Principal Findings: We developed a simple mathematical model that accurately describes the entire …

Remote Sensing Spatiotemporal Assessment Of Nitrogen Concentrations In Tampa Bay, Florida Due To A Drought, Ni-Bin Chang, Zhemin Xuan, Brent Wimberly
Faculty Bibliography 2010s
A long-term low nitrogen to phosphorus (N:P) ratio in the Tampa Bay, Florida, estuary system suggests that nitrogen is more limiting than phosphorus. However, south Florida suffered from a drought around 2007, and the reduction in runoff flowing into the bay affected local ecosystem dynamics. This study presents a remote sensing study to retrieve spatiotemporal patterns of total nitrogen (TN) concentrations in Tampa Bay under drought impacts through the integration of Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) images and a genetic programming (GP) model. Research findings show that the drought impact on TN in Tampa Bay is both a seasonal and …

Abruptly Autofocusing And Autodefocusing Optical Beams With Arbitrary Caustics, Ioannis D. Chremmos, Zhigang Chen, Demetrios N. Christodoulides, Nikolaos K. Efremidis
Faculty Bibliography 2010s
We propose a simple yet efficient method for generating abruptly autofocusing optical beams with arbitrary caustics. In addition, we introduce a family of abruptly autodefocusing beams whose maximum intensity suddenly decreases by orders of magnitude right after the target. The method relies on appropriately modulating the phase of a circularly symmetric optical wavefront, such as that of a Gaussian, and subsequently on Fourier-transforming it by means of a lens. If two such beams are superimposed in a Bessel-like standing wave pattern, then a complete mirror-symmetric, with respect to the focal plane, caustic surface of revolution is formed that can be …

Modeling Of Phase Volume Diffractive Gratings, Part 2: Reflecting Sinusoidal Uniform Gratings, Bragg Mirrors, Igor V. Ciapurin, Derrek R. Drachenberg, Vadim I. Smirnov, George B. Venus, Leonid B. Glebov
Faculty Bibliography 2010s
A detailed model of diffraction of plane and Gaussian beams on plane uniform phase Bragg gratings based on a Kogelnik's theory of coupled waves is presented. The model describes reflecting gratings (Bragg mirrors) with arbitrary orientation in a plane-parallel plate having no material losses. It takes into account spectral width and angular divergence of laser beams. The results of modeling are compared with experimental data for Bragg mirrors in a photo-thermo-refractive glass.
