Statistical Inference When Using Data Adaptive Estimators Of Nuisance Parameters, Mark J. Van Der Laan Nov 2012

Statistical Inference When Using Data Adaptive Estimators Of Nuisance Parameters, Mark J. Van Der Laan

U.C. Berkeley Division of Biostatistics Working Paper Series

In order to be concrete we focus on estimation of the treatment specific mean, controlling for all measured baseline covariates, based on observing n independent and identically distributed copies of a random variable consisting of baseline covariates, a subsequently assigned binary treatment, and a final outcome. The statistical model only assumes possible restrictions on the conditional distribution of treatment, given the covariates, the so called propensity score. Estimators of the treatment specific mean involve estimation of the propensity score and/or estimation of the conditional mean of the outcome, given the treatment and covariates. In order to make these estimators asymptotically …

Analyzing Utilization Rates In Data Centers For Optimizing Energy Management, Michael Pawlish, Aparna Varde, Stefan Robila Nov 2012

Analyzing Utilization Rates In Data Centers For Optimizing Energy Management, Michael Pawlish, Aparna Varde, Stefan Robila

Department of Computer Science Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

In this paper, we explore academic data center utilization rates from an energy management perspective with the broader goal of providing decision support for green computing. The utilization rate is defined as the overall extent to which data center servers are being used and is usually recorded as a percentage. Recent literature states that utilization rates at many data centers are quite low resulting in poor usage of resources such as energy and labor. Based on our study we attribute these lower utilization rates to not fully taking advantage of virtualization and cloud technology. This paper describes our research including …

Variability Of Pennsylvanian-Permian Carbonate Associations And Implications For Nw Pangea Palaeogeography, East-Central British Columbia, Canada, K. D. Zubin-Stathopoulos, B. Beauchamp, V. I. Davydov, C. M. Henderson Nov 2012

Variability Of Pennsylvanian-Permian Carbonate Associations And Implications For Nw Pangea Palaeogeography, East-Central British Columbia, Canada, K. D. Zubin-Stathopoulos, B. Beauchamp, V. I. Davydov, C. M. Henderson

Geosciences Faculty Publications and Presentations

Different stages of Pennsylvanian-Permian carbonate sedimentation in east-central British Columbia record a complex history of changing environments influenced by evolving palaeogeography and climate. Newly recognized tectonically controlled features affected the distribution and variability of carbonate associations, providing new interpretations for this portion of the west coast of Pangea. Both a heterozoan (cool water) and photozoan (warm-water) association were identified on either side of a palaeogeographic high here informally termed “Tipinahokan Peninsula”. Cool water carbonates were located outboard, or to the west of this high, an area influenced by upwelling waters. Inboard of this high, a warm, protected sea developed, here …

Shared Journaling As Peer Support In Teaching Qualitative Research Methods, Aine M. Humble, Elizabeth Sharp Nov 2012

Shared Journaling As Peer Support In Teaching Qualitative Research Methods, Aine M. Humble, Elizabeth Sharp

The Qualitative Report

Teaching qualitative research methods (QRM), particularly early on in one’s academic career, can be challenging. This paper describes shared peer journaling as one way in which to cope with challenges such as complex debates in the field and student resistance to interpretive paradigms. Literature on teaching QRM and the pedagogical value of journaling for metacognition are reviewed. The two authors describe key points about their teaching contexts and then demonstrate with journal excerpts how they developed (a) clarity, (b) confidence, and (c) connection through two years of co-creating their journal. The article concludes with recommendations for shared journal writing as …

A Cps-Like Transformation Of Continuation Marks, Kimball Richard Germane Nov 2012

A Cps-Like Transformation Of Continuation Marks, Kimball Richard Germane

Theses and Dissertations

Continuation marks are a programming language feature which generalize stack inspection. Despite its usefulness, this feature has not been adopted by languages which rely on stack inspection, e.g., for dynamic security checks. One reason for this neglect may be that continuation marks do not yet enjoy a transformation to the plain λ-calculus which would allow higher-order languages to provide continuation marks at little cost. We present a CPS-like transformation from the call-by-value λ-calculus augmented with continuation marks to the pure call-by-value λ-calculus. We discuss how this transformation simplifies the construction of compilers which treat continuation marks correctly. We document an …

The Art Of Legal Reasoning And The Angst Of Judging: Of Balls, Strikes, And Moments Of Truth, Timothy P. Terrell Nov 2012

The Art Of Legal Reasoning And The Angst Of Judging: Of Balls, Strikes, And Moments Of Truth, Timothy P. Terrell

Northwestern Journal of Law & Social Policy

An essay of only five short paragraphs published several years ago by the noted Harvard paleontologist Stephen Jay Gould about a controversial call by baseball umpire Babe Pinelli provides all the foundation necessary for a thorough investigation of the phenomenon of legal reasoning. The present article contrasts Gould’s analysis of a “strike” with the comment by then-Judge John Roberts at his Supreme Court confirmation hearings that he just wanted to “call [the] balls and strikes,” and through this exchange develops a new approach toward identifying—and teaching—the basic elements of sophisticated legal thinking. This article divides legal reasoning into four interrelated …

Algorithmically Flexible Style Composition Through Multi-Objective Fitness Functions, Skyler James Murray Nov 2012

Algorithmically Flexible Style Composition Through Multi-Objective Fitness Functions, Skyler James Murray

Theses and Dissertations

Creating a fitness function for music is largely subjective and dependent on a programmer's personal tastes or goals. Previous attempts to create musical fitness functions for use in genetic algorithms lack scope or are prejudiced to a certain genre of music. They also suffer the limitation of producing music only in the strict style determined by the programmer. We show in this paper that musical feature extractors that avoid the challenges of qualitative judgment enable creation of a multi-objective function for direct music production. Multi-objective fitness functions enable creation of music with varying identifiable styles. With this system we produced …

Microfabrication, Characterization, And Application Of Carbon Nanotube Templated Thin Layer Chromatography Plates, And Functionalization Of Porous Graphitic Carbon, David S. Jensen

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation contains the following sections. Chapter 1 contains a detailed description of the theory of thin layer chromatography (TLC). Chapter 2 describes the benefits and practical considerations of elevated temperatures in liquid chromatography (LC). The porous graphitic carbon (PGC) I modified as part of my work is often used in elevated temperature LC. Chapter 3 shows a thermodynamic analysis of chromatographic retention at elevated temperature, and Chapter 4 contains a closer look at the van 't Hoff equation in LC and how it can be used in retention modeling. In Chapter 5, I describe a new procedure for microfabricating …

Canopy Vs. Roots: Production And Destruction Of Variability In Soil Moisture And Hydrologic Fluxes, Andrew J. Guswa Nov 2012

Canopy Vs. Roots: Production And Destruction Of Variability In Soil Moisture And Hydrologic Fluxes, Andrew J. Guswa

Engineering: Faculty Publications

The leaves and stems of forest canopies intercept and redistribute precipitation in space. Many investigations have demonstrated that spatial patterns of through fall and stem flow are persistent in time, and this produces wet and dry spots in the soil. At the same time, root uptake for transpiration acts to destroy this variability. This homogenization is enhanced by root compensation (extraction at high rates from wet regions) and hydraulic redistribution (transport of water from wet soils to dry via the roots). Because many hydrologic and biogeochemical processes are nonlinear functions of soil moisture, an understanding of the relative strength of …

Towards Sequence-Based Dna Flexibility Analysis, Emily Flynn, Filip Jagodzinski, Ileana Streinu Nov 2012

Towards Sequence-Based Dna Flexibility Analysis, Emily Flynn, Filip Jagodzinski, Ileana Streinu

Computer Science: Faculty Publications

In this poster, we present an extension to our freely available KINARI-Web server to identify rigid and flexible regions of nucleic acids and protein-nucleic acid complexes contained in the Protein Data Bank (PDB). The goal is to explore the effect of DNA and RNA on the rigidity and stability of these structures. We also propose an approach for determining DNA rigidity based solely on sequence. Currently, only the rigidity of DNA molecules whose structures have been deposited in the PDB (approx. <4,000 files) can be analyzed. Once fine-tuned and validated, this new coordinate-free method for investigating DNA flexibility could be applied to the more than 135 million sequences in GenBank, and to nanostructure design.

Towards Biophysical Validation Of Constraint Modeling For Rigidity Analysis Of Proteins, Filip Jagodzinski, Ileana Streinu Nov 2012

Towards Biophysical Validation Of Constraint Modeling For Rigidity Analysis Of Proteins, Filip Jagodzinski, Ileana Streinu

Computer Science: Faculty Publications

Proteins are dynamic molecules, and understanding how they flex and bend provides fundamental insights to their functions. Methods such as molecular dynamics are computationally expensive, and can simulate protein motions on limited timescales. Rigidity analysis is an alternative method, in which a protein structure is analyzed to infer which portions of the molecule are flexible. To perform rigidity analysis, a model is first constructed in which various inter-atomic stabilizing interactions are modeled according to their strength. No detailed study has been conducted as to what is the most plausible, chemically validated modeling scheme. All previous implementations have relied on heuristics, …

Understanding Differential Equations Using Mathematica And Interactive Demonstrations, Paritosh Mokhasi, James Adduci, Devendra Kapadia

CODEE Journal

The solution of differential equations using the software package Mathematica is discussed in this paper. We focus on two functions, DSolve and NDSolve, and give various examples of how one can obtain symbolic or numerical results using these functions. An overview of the Wolfram Demonstrations Project (http://demonstrations.wolfram.com) is given, along with various novel user-contributed examples in the field of differential equations. The use of these Demonstrations in a classroom setting is elaborated upon to emphasize their significance for education.
