Filtering Techniques For Pose Estimation With Applications To Unmanned Air Vehicles, Bryce Benson Ready Nov 2012

Filtering Techniques For Pose Estimation With Applications To Unmanned Air Vehicles, Bryce Benson Ready

Theses and Dissertations

This work presents two novel methods of estimating the state of a dynamic system in a Kalman Filtering framework. The first is an application specific method for use with systems performing Visual Odometry in a mostly planar scene. Because a Visual Odometry method inherently provides relative information about the pose of a platform, we use this system as part of the time update in a Kalman Filtering framework, and develop a novel way to propagate the uncertainty of the pose through this time update method. Our initial results show that this method is able to reduce localization error significantly with …

Influential Educators: Why Are They Remembered And What Can Be Learned From Them?, Jessica M. Butler

Senior Honors Theses

The purpose of this study is to examine the lives of seven educators and present a synopsis of their lives, educational beliefs, and how their practices are implemented in the modern classroom. The educators included are Socrates and Plato, Jesus Christ, Johann Pestalozzi, Fredrich Frobel, Maria Montessori, and Jamie Escalante. Each were considered great teachers of their time, and their practices be evaluated for effectiveness and then implemented into modern educational thinking.

The goal of addressing each educator individually is to look at what these educators have in common that all teachers should identify as effective practice. These commonalities may …

Incorporating Latent Variable Outcomes In Value-Added Assessment: An Evaluation Of Univariate And Multivariate Measurement Model Structures, Leslie H. Shaw Nov 2012

Incorporating Latent Variable Outcomes In Value-Added Assessment: An Evaluation Of Univariate And Multivariate Measurement Model Structures, Leslie H. Shaw

College of Education and Human Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

The purpose of this study was to systematically evaluate the degree to which univariate and multivariate measurement model structures were related to value-added model parameters, teacher estimates, and rankings. Most value-added assessment methods use a single test score to estimate teacher effects, but reliance on a single test score assumes that scores are an error-free approximation of the latent construct of academic achievement. The unique contribution of this study was the systematic evaluation of both univariate and multivariate measurement model structures in a particular value-added model to examine the utility of incorporating latent variable approaches within a traditional value-added framework. …

The Use Of Rhenium(Vii) Oxide As A Catalyst For The Substitution Of Hemiacetals, Michael W. Richardson Nov 2012

The Use Of Rhenium(Vii) Oxide As A Catalyst For The Substitution Of Hemiacetals, Michael W. Richardson

Department of Chemistry: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Rhenium (VII) oxides have proven to be mild and versatile catalysts in organic chemistry. They have previously been utilized to catalyze the transposition of allylic aclohols, Prins reaction, and reductive amination to name a few examples. This thesis reports the application of Re(VII) oxide in the substitution of hemi-acetals with a wide array of nucleophiles including oxo-, thio-, and peroxy-nucleophiles. These reactions proceed efficiently with rapid reaction times and high yields.

Localizing Brain Regions Associated With Female Mate Preference Behavior In A Swordtail, Ryan Y. Wong, Mary E. Ramsey, Molly E. Cummings Nov 2012

Localizing Brain Regions Associated With Female Mate Preference Behavior In A Swordtail, Ryan Y. Wong, Mary E. Ramsey, Molly E. Cummings

Biology Faculty Publications

Female mate choice behavior is a critical component of sexual selection, yet identifying the neural basis of this behavior is largely unresolved. Previous studies have implicated sensory processing and hypothalamic brain regions during female mate choice and there is a conserved network of brain regions (Social Behavior Network, SBN) that underlies sexual behaviors. However, we are only beginning to understand the role this network has in pre-copulatory female mate choice. Using in situ hybridization, we identify brain regions associated with mate preference in female Xiphophorus nigrensis, a swordtail species with a female choice mating system. We measure gene expression in …

Site Selection By Migratory Shorebirds In Oregon Estuaries Over Broad And Fine Spatial Scales, Aileen Kilpatrick Miller Nov 2012

Site Selection By Migratory Shorebirds In Oregon Estuaries Over Broad And Fine Spatial Scales, Aileen Kilpatrick Miller

Dissertations and Theses

Many migratory shorebirds rely on estuaries as stop-over sites to refuel during migration, and the loss of stop-over sites is a primary threat to shorebird populations on the West Coast of the United States (e.g. Calidris alpina pacifica, C. mauri). Conservation and research has focused on the largest of these sites; however, smaller estuaries also host thousands of migratory shorebirds. Furthermore, the reasons for site selection are largely unknown. Estuarine inter-tidal microhabitats are non-uniform and both abiotic and biotic factors may serve as predictors of whether an abundance of shorebirds will use a site. I investigated shorebird site selection on …

Divergent Carbon Dynamics Under Climate Change In Forests With Diverse Soils, Tree Species, And Land Use Histories, Robert M. Scheller, Alec M. Kretchun, Steve Van Tuyl, Kenneth L. Clark, Melissa S. Lucash, John Hom Nov 2012

Divergent Carbon Dynamics Under Climate Change In Forests With Diverse Soils, Tree Species, And Land Use Histories, Robert M. Scheller, Alec M. Kretchun, Steve Van Tuyl, Kenneth L. Clark, Melissa S. Lucash, John Hom

Environmental Science and Management Faculty Publications and Presentations

Accounting for both climate change and natural disturbances—which typically result in greenhouse gas emissions—is necessary to begin managing forest carbon sequestration. Gaining a complete understanding of forest carbon dynamics is, however, challenging in systems characterized by historic over-utilization, diverse soils and tree species, and frequent disturbance. In order to elucidate the cascading effects of potential climate change on such systems, we projected forest carbon dynamics, including soil carbon changes, and shifts in tree species composition as a consequence of wildfires and climate change in the New Jersey pine barrens (NJPB) over the next 100 years. To do so, we used …

The Role Of Academic Help-Seeking Attitudes, Achievement Goal Orientations, And Dissertation Self-Efficacy In Dissertation Progress, Tisha Stoll Colvin

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

The current study explored socialization variables (academic discipline, part-time versus full-time enrollment status, and student involvement with research and teaching assistantships) and educational psychological variables (academic help-seeking attitudes, achievement goal orientations, and dissertation self-efficacy) in relation to dissertation progress. The primary research questions were 1) What is the unique relationship between the educational psychological variables of academic help-seeking attitudes, achievement goal orientations, dissertation self-efficacy, and dissertation progress over and above the socialization variables of academic discipline, enrollment status, and student involvement in research and teaching assistantships? 2) Is there a significant difference between the academic help-seeking attitudes of PhD candidates …

On Integer Sequences, Packings And Games On Graphs, Ago-Erik Riet Nov 2012

On Integer Sequences, Packings And Games On Graphs, Ago-Erik Riet

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

This dissertation concerns four problems in combinatorics. In Chapter 2 we consider the Prolonger-Shortener game of F saturation, introduced by Füredi, Reimer and Seress: Players take turns drawing edges on an initially edgeless vertex set of size n with the restriction that they do not complete a copy of a graph in F. The game ends when no more edges can be drawn. Prolonger wants as many edges as possible at the end of the game and Shortener as few as possible. We ask what is the final number of edges with both players playing optimally when F is a …

Children's Lead Poisoning In The Eastern United States: A Spatial Data Mining Approach, Thaddeus Grace

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

The focus of this thesis is to determine whether an association rule mining appraoch could be used to uncover associations between socioeconomic variables and childhood lead poisoning in the eastern Unied States. The association rule analysis was able to discover three prominent variables that were linked with childhood lead toxicity. Counties with high rates of holder housing, high single female head of householders, and a low proportion of Hispanic residents were found to be associated with higher rates of childhood lead poisoning. Geographic information systems (GIS) was utilized to visually illustrate the spatial distribution of each of the three association …

The Relationship Of Food And Academic Performance: A Preliminary Examination Of The Factors Of Nutritional Neuroscience, Malnutrition, And Diet Adequacy, Allison Woodhouse, Mark A. Lamport, Ph.D.

Christian Perspectives in Education

This article examines the extent of food’s impact on children’s academic achievement. The purpose of this study is to summarize existing research concerning the food-learning correlation and to synthesize studies regarding nutritional needs of the brain, malnutrition during development, and overall diet quality as related to academic achievement. Data finds a fundamental link between nutrition and cognition. Results suggest to the extent the brains of many United States schoolchildren do not receive the nutrients needed for optimal cognition, that academic performance may be consequentially reduced. Finally, a discussion of related learning theory and current debate, and practical implications for educational …

The δ15N values of organisms are commonly used across diverse ecosystems to estimate trophic position and infer trophic connectivity. We undertook a novel cross-basin comparison of trophic position in two ecologically well-characterized and different groups of dominant mid-water fish consumers using amino acid nitrogen isotope compositions. We found that trophic positions estimated from the δ15N values of individual amino acids are nearly uniform within both families of these fishes across five global regions despite great variability in bulk tissue δ15N values. Regional differences in the δ15N values of phenylalanine confirmed that bulk tissue δ15N values reflect region-specific water mass biogeochemistry …
