Affective Response Of African American And European American Students To Portrayals Of Cross-Racial Relationships On Television, Earl S. Mowatt Jan 2012

Affective Response Of African American And European American Students To Portrayals Of Cross-Racial Relationships On Television, Earl S. Mowatt

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Race is a potent discourse within the world of pop culture, particularly in television where viewers are witnessing more racial diversity in scripted shows. However, show creators must maintain standards that emphasize distinct social roles among characters in order to appeal to large heterogeneous audiences. These roles tend to be characterizations of racial stereotypes that often lead to biased opinions and inaccurate perceptions of minority groups. Previous studies detail that racial biases in media adversely shape public opinions about African Americans and depress the desire for racial integration. This seems somewhat confounding since the shift in programming towards racial diversity …

Development Of The Tagalog Version Of The Western Aphasia Battery-Revised, Carmina Ozaeta Jan 2012

Development Of The Tagalog Version Of The Western Aphasia Battery-Revised, Carmina Ozaeta

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

There has been limited research done in the Philippines in the area of aphasia, a frequent concomitant symptom of strokes and presents as impairment in any area of the input and output of language. Diagnosis is generally conducted by clinicians based on sites of lesion of speakers with aphasia and clinical observations of language symptoms and unpublished translation of the WAB. The lack of relevant research and formal assessment tools in the Philippines motivated this current study. The development of this type of assessment battery for the Tagalog (pronounced /təˈɡɑːlɒɡ/ in English) speaking population will provide a means for differential …

Exploring Intensive Reading Intervention Teachers' Formal And Practical Knowledge Of Beginning Reading Instruction Provided To At-Risk First Grade Readers, Kathryn Cortelyou Jan 2012

Exploring Intensive Reading Intervention Teachers' Formal And Practical Knowledge Of Beginning Reading Instruction Provided To At-Risk First Grade Readers, Kathryn Cortelyou

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study was designed with two goals in mind. The first goal was to describe the formal and practical knowledge of intensive reading intervention teachers related to beginning reading instruction with at-risk first graders. A second goal was to understand any potential relationships between intensive reading teachers’ practical knowledge and formal knowledge. These two goals framed the study’s three research questions. To answer these three questions, the study was conducted in two phases. Phase one included 32 participants, all of whom worked in the role of a K-2 intensive reading intervention teacher. Each of these 32 participants completed a background …

Tier I Rti For English Language Learners With Language Deficits, Maria Jose Soong Jan 2012

Tier I Rti For English Language Learners With Language Deficits, Maria Jose Soong

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Educators are attempting to eliminate the disproportionate representation of culturally and linguistically diverse students in special education through initiatives such as Response to Intervention (RtI). Prior to the implementation of such initiatives, existing research relevant to this population must be critically reviewed and expanded. A synthesis of the available literature can provide significant insight into the type of data necessary to make informed decisions involving English language learners (ELL) at Tier I of an RtI model. In forming the theoretical foundation for this research, cognitive deficits associated with language-based disabilities and principles of cognitive load theory were examined. The study …

My study revealed the positive effects these interventions can have on elementary students’ attitudes towards mathematics.

Monocropping Cultures Into Ruin: The Loss Of Food Varieties And Cultural Diversity, Peter J. Jacques, Jessica Racine Jacques Jan 2012

Monocropping Cultures Into Ruin: The Loss Of Food Varieties And Cultural Diversity, Peter J. Jacques, Jessica Racine Jacques

Faculty Bibliography 2010s

The loss of genetic diversity of thousands of plants and crops has been well documented at least since the 1970s, and has been understood as a result of epistemological and political economic conditions of the Green Revolution. The political economic arrangement of the Green Revolution, alongside a post-war focus on economies of scale and export-oriented growth, replace high-yield single varieties of crops for a diverse array of varieties that may not have the same yield, but may be able to resist pests, disease, and changing climatic conditions. Also, the harvest does not flow in all directions equally: Whereas small holder …

The Impact Of Access To Books On The Reading Motivation And Achievement Of Urban Elementary Students, Lee-Anne Spalding Jan 2012

The Impact Of Access To Books On The Reading Motivation And Achievement Of Urban Elementary Students, Lee-Anne Spalding

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The focus of this research was to study the association that reading motivation and reading achievement have with increased access to books provided by the non-profit program Book Trust, could have on urban elementary students, specifically second graders being educated in a large school district in Central Florida. Teacher data collection sheets, the Motivation to Read Profile (MRP): Reading Survey and the Florida Assessment for Instruction in Reading (FAIR) were used to measure the aforementioned associations. Findings revealed that increased access to books in these elementary schools did not have a statistically significant impact on reading motivation or reading achievement …

An Analysis Of Communication Anxiety And Reading Comprehension In Sixth, Seventh And Eighth Grade Students, Tami Mullens Davis Jan 2012

An Analysis Of Communication Anxiety And Reading Comprehension In Sixth, Seventh And Eighth Grade Students, Tami Mullens Davis

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The goal of this research was to determine whether communication apprehension impacted reading comprehension in sixth, seventh, and eighth grade students and to examine the impact of family socio-economic status. Many studies have demonstrated the negative relationship between communication apprehension and academic achievement, however, studies of elementary and middle school students have been conspicuously missing from this research. Findings of this study indicated that the levels of communication apprehension rose slightly as grade level increased. Results showed that females in the study had higher levels of communication apprehension than males. The study also found that those students receiving free and …

Evaluating Improvisation As A Technique For Training Pre-Service Teachers For Inclusive Classrooms, Theresa Becker Jan 2012

Evaluating Improvisation As A Technique For Training Pre-Service Teachers For Inclusive Classrooms, Theresa Becker

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Improvisation is a construct that uses a set of minimal heuristic guidelines to create a highly flexible scaffold that fosters extemporaneous communication. Scholars from diverse domains: such as psychology, business, negotiation, and education have suggested its use as a method for preparing professionals to manage complexity and think on their feet. A review of the literature revealed that while there is substantial theoretical scholarship on using improvisation in diverse domains, little research has verified these assertions. This dissertation evaluated whether improvisation, a specific type of dramatic technique, was effective for training pre-service teachers in specific characteristics of teacher-child classroom interaction, …

Buried Stars In Salman Rushdie’S The Ground Beneath Her Feet, Stanka Radović Jan 2012

Buried Stars In Salman Rushdie’S The Ground Beneath Her Feet, Stanka Radović

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

Rushdie's own global stardom, built on his celebration of migrancy and uprootedness as well as on the “fatwa” that marked him as a global target, informs his 1999 novel The Ground Beneath Her Feet. In this novel, Rushdie's usual focus on crossing boundaries and challenging national loyalties follows the musical stardom of his two protagonists, Vina Apsara and Ormus Cama. They not only evoke famous pop stars, like Madonna or Michael Jackson, but also the trans-historical allegiance to the most enduring myth of poetic dislocation, the myth of Orpheus. In exploring the musical star's potential to cross the impossible …

The Subversion Of Abstract Space In U2’S Rhizomatic 1990s, Anthony Cristofani Jan 2012

The Subversion Of Abstract Space In U2’S Rhizomatic 1990s, Anthony Cristofani

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

In The Production of Space, Henri Lefebvre analyzes the “geometric—neutral, empty, blank—mental space” that is posited in order to avoid the unpleasant, contradictory nature of social space, which it displaces. Abstract space is “also the locus of all the agitations and disputations of mimesis”, and the space is where books are canonized, genres are fixed, and university departments are calcified, a process that not only hierarchizes texts but fixes their context. Even avant-garde and purportedly subversive art and criticism is easily subsumed in the abstract space required for the functioning of capitalism. As such, I look to a popular …

Orphan Works As Grist For The Data Mill, Matthew Sag Jan 2012

Orphan Works As Grist For The Data Mill, Matthew Sag

Faculty Publications & Other Works

The phenomenon of library digitization in general, and the digitization of so-called“orphan works” in particular, raises many important copyright law questions. However, as this Article explains, correctly understood, there is no orphan works problem for certain kinds of library digitization.

The distinction between expressive and non-expressive works is already well recognized in copyright law as the gatekeeper to copyright protection—novels are protected by copyright, while telephone books and other uncreative compilations of data are not. The same distinction should generally be made in relation to potential acts of infringement.

Preserving the functional force of the idea-expression distinction in the digital …

Hetero-Masculinity, Homosexual Desire: A Perfect Gay World, Khaled Ismail Jan 2012

Hetero-Masculinity, Homosexual Desire: A Perfect Gay World, Khaled Ismail

Honors Capstones

In order to create a world where homosexual desire, masculinities, and sex is reconciled, gay pom challenges and presents new ways of framing our understanding of sexuality, gender and sex. It does so by offering options that are more fluid and interchangeable, and by rearranging normative lines of logic in ways that better fit the gay male experience. Several popular categories of gay pom blur the lines between normative understandings of sexual identity, masculinity and sexual behavior, allowing space for fluidity and a more fulfilling experience of desire. To demonstrate this, I explored three popular experiences in online gay pom; …

Ironic Advertising: Theory, Evidence And Practice, Ekin Pehlivan Yalcin Jan 2012

Ironic Advertising: Theory, Evidence And Practice, Ekin Pehlivan Yalcin

2012

Irony is one mechanism that advertisers use to attract consumer attention. Although ironic advertising (IA) is utilized in the mass media, it has received surprisingly little conceptual or empirical attention from marketing scholars. Perhaps one reason for this is that in marketing irony has been viewed primarily from a postmodern perspective. This is in marked contrast to psycholinguists where the phenomenon is approached from a more ecumenical, realist point of view. This dissertation is based on the premise that a realist approach to ironic advertising would produce insights for both marketing theory and practice.

This dissertation comprises of three papers …

Musical Echolalia And Non-Verbal Children With Autism, Krystal Leah Demaine Jan 2012

Musical Echolalia And Non-Verbal Children With Autism, Krystal Leah Demaine

Expressive Therapies Dissertations

Typical imitation skills that are integral to language and social learning do not readily develop in children with autism. Echolalia, an echoing or imitation of speech sounds, has historically been considered a non-meaningful form verbal imitation. Since music is intrinsically more meaningful than language for children with autism, musical echolalia may offer path to communication for non-verbal children with autism. This research study sought to identify a potential existence of musical echolalia among nonverbal children with autism. Twelve non-verbal children diagnosed with classic autism, six boys and six girls, aged four to eight, who had no formal musical training or …

The Feasibility Of Implementing A Collaborative Recommender System For The Brigham Young University Harold B. Lee Library, Derrick Brinton Jan 2012

The Feasibility Of Implementing A Collaborative Recommender System For The Brigham Young University Harold B. Lee Library, Derrick Brinton

Student Works

With library users finding their information from other non-library sources, the Harold B. Lee Library at Brigham Young University has great need of a recommender system. The library already has years of checkout data that can be used to jump-start the recommender system's recommendations. Unfortunately, that data is difficult to format in a way that a recommender system can use. With some effort, it can be stored in a graph database and used to generate recommendations for users based on their preferences. Calculating recommendations before they are required and storing them for future use can speed up the amount of …

A Tarskian Informal Semantics For Answer Set Programming, Marc Denecker, Yuliya Lierler, Miroslaw Truszczyński, Joost Vennekens Jan 2012

A Tarskian Informal Semantics For Answer Set Programming, Marc Denecker, Yuliya Lierler, Miroslaw Truszczyński, Joost Vennekens

Computer Science Faculty Proceedings & Presentations

In their seminal papers on stable model semantics, Gelfond and Lifschitz introduced ASP by casting programs as epistemic theories, in which rules represent statements about the knowledge of a rational agent. To the best of our knowledge, theirs is still the only published systematic account of the intuitive meaning of rules and programs under the stable semantics. In current ASP practice, however, we find numerous applications in which rational agents no longer seem to play any role. Therefore, we propose here an alternative explanation of the intuitive meaning of ASP programs, in which they are not viewed as statements about …

Surviving Solver Sensitivity: An Asp Practitioner’S Guide, Bryan Silverthorn, Yuliya Lierler, Marius Schneider Jan 2012

Surviving Solver Sensitivity: An Asp Practitioner’S Guide, Bryan Silverthorn, Yuliya Lierler, Marius Schneider

Computer Science Faculty Proceedings & Presentations

Answer set programming (ASP) is a declarative programming formalism that allows a practitioner to specify a problem without describing an algorithm for solving it. In ASP, the tools for processing problem specifications are called answer set solvers. Because specified problems are often NP complete, these systems often require significant computational effort to succeed. Furthermore, they offer different heuristics, expose numerous parameters, and their running time is sensitive to the configuration used. Portfolio solvers and automatic algorithm configuration systems are recent attempts to automate the problem of manual parameter tuning, and to mitigate the burden of identifying the right solver configuration. …
