Participation, Collaboration, And Nonparticipation In Civil War, Yuichi Kubota
Participation, Collaboration, And Nonparticipation In Civil War, Yuichi Kubota
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
The size of armed forces holds significant meaning for belligerents in civil war. Given that a large size of forces advantages an armed group in fight with the opponent, it should seek to expand the size of the forces as long as it can exercise close control over and have enough resources to manage them. Civil war involves the government and rebels, both of whom compete for the domestic popular support and recruits and often have areas where each of them can exclusively exert influence over civilians (i.e., the stronghold). In such a context, the pool of available participants for …

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Our team worked with a native speaker of Copala Triqui, Román Vidal Lopez, to write the Address to the Triqui People, a message of peace for the Copal Triqui. We translated it to Spanish and English, and worked on creating a lexicon of Copala Triqui.
Terr(Or) Incognito : Unveiling Poe's Titanic Universe, Kraig Harry Odabashian
Terr(Or) Incognito : Unveiling Poe's Titanic Universe, Kraig Harry Odabashian
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
This thesis investigates the role of dialectics in Edgar Allan Poe's fiction and prose. With particular attention to "Eureka" (1848), as well as "The Fall of the House of Usher" (1838) and Ligeia (1838/45), I argue that much of Poe's thought relies on theological sources including the writings of Jonathan Edwards and the Gospel of John.
Reading For Deep Understanding : Knowledge Building And Conceptual Artifacts In Secondary English, Marc Nachowitz
Reading For Deep Understanding : Knowledge Building And Conceptual Artifacts In Secondary English, Marc Nachowitz
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
The purpose of this design-based experiment is two-fold: to see if classroom pedagogies can be developed to improve student achievement in English literature as well as prepare them for 21st Century literacies. Applying Bereiter and Scardamalia's theory of Knowledge Building to English curricula, this experiment tracked the progress of a sixth grade Language Arts class as they engaged in creating theories of literary interpretation supported by Knowledge Forum, a computer-supported, on-line learning environment. The study revealed several key findings concerning how knowledge-building can support student's attainment of "high literacy" in the reading of literature, including maintaining idea diversity, the importance …

Self-Modeling As An Intervention For Stuttering In Elementary Students, Jason Northrup
Self-Modeling As An Intervention For Stuttering In Elementary Students, Jason Northrup
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Stuttering is a disorder involving disruptions and disfluencies in speech that impacts overall communication and affects approximately 1% of the population. In addition to speech disfluency, stuttering is often related to physical tension, embarrassment, fear, anxiety, and other negative social-emotional problems, especially for children and adolescents. Fortunately, research indicates that stuttering can be alleviated before becoming more advanced and complex as individuals enter adolescence and adulthood. Self-modeling, an intervention that involves individuals watching themselves engage in exemplary behavior, appears to be particularly effective for individuals who stutter and can be implemented in a school setting. The purpose of this study …
China As A Multi-National Country : A Novel Interpretation Of Chinese Nationalism, Zhaojin Lu
China As A Multi-National Country : A Novel Interpretation Of Chinese Nationalism, Zhaojin Lu
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Chinese nationalism in official discourse is conspicuously reflected in CCP's territorial claims to Tibet and Taiwan, where local nationalism is challenging the official definition of China as a unitary multi-national country as the constitution describes. Conventional wisdom, utilized by political propaganda, is considering the contemporary Chinese national boundary as the legacy of "Chinese history", of which the popular version is deliberately depicted in public educational materials. This paper presents a qualitative content analysis of history textbook used in high school in China, showing the historical narratives, as a result of selection, about the Chinese nationhood boundary in ancient China, especially …
Anatomy Of Process-Based Writing Center Tutorials With Nnes Writers : What Writers Take Away, Jason C. Vickers
Anatomy Of Process-Based Writing Center Tutorials With Nnes Writers : What Writers Take Away, Jason C. Vickers
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Non-native English speaking (NNES) students in higher educational settings face difficulties writing academic papers and, in response to these difficulties, often seek assistance in understanding cultural, rhetorical, linguistic aspect of writing in English (Harris & Silva, 1993; Powers & Nelson, 1995). One resource available to them is writing centers, which Leki (2009) believes may be "ideal learning environments whose first or strongest language is not English" (p. 1). Writing centers in higher education contexts are places, usually operated by English departments, where students can go to receive assistance at all stages of writing their academic papers. Tutorials are typically collaborative …
Pretty In Pink : Jacqueline Kennedy And The Politics Of Fashion, Barbara Pascarell Brown
Pretty In Pink : Jacqueline Kennedy And The Politics Of Fashion, Barbara Pascarell Brown
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
When John Fitzgerald Kennedy began his long-shot quest for the presidency, he and his advisors feared his wife was a political liability and would alienate American voters with her aristocratic bearing and tastes. Not only did the Sorbonne-educated Jacqueline Kennedy cultivate a sophisticated style and dress in the slim sheaths and tight slacks favored by Parisian couturiers, she spoke in a cultured, whispery voice and was fluent in several languages. She exuded glamor. To an America used to its First Ladies looking and dressing like Bess Truman and Mamie Eisenhower, Mrs. Kennedy was an anomaly. In this analysis, I trace …
The Analytic Reconciliation Of Classic Mayan Elite Pottery : Squaring Pottery Function With Form, Adornment, And Residual Contents, Jennifer Ann Loughmiller-Newman
The Analytic Reconciliation Of Classic Mayan Elite Pottery : Squaring Pottery Function With Form, Adornment, And Residual Contents, Jennifer Ann Loughmiller-Newman
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
This dissertation presents a multidisciplinary means of determining the actual content (foodstuff, non-foodstuff, or lack of contents) of Classic Mayan (A.D. 250-900) vessels. Based on previous studies that have identified the residues of foodstuffs named in hieroglyphic texts (e.g. cacao), this study is designed to further investigate foodstuff residues in the elite vessels indicated by text or image to contain those residues, and the methods employed for residue characterization. Prior to studies utilizing residue analysis, the content of Classic Maya vessels largely had long been inferred largely by ethnographic analogy, associating specific vessel forms with specific uses based on ethnographic …
Education In Juticalpa, Honduras : Analyzing Nonprofit Education's Impact On Socio-Cultural Reproduction, Eric Macias
Education In Juticalpa, Honduras : Analyzing Nonprofit Education's Impact On Socio-Cultural Reproduction, Eric Macias
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
This Master's project explores education's impact on socio-cultural and economic reproduction in Juticalpa, Honduras. Utilizing comparative analysis, I investigate the education system in Juticalpa employing a public, private, and a nonprofit school as analytical lenses to illustrate how schools reproduce certain existing inequalities and create new ones in this city. The purpose in the following pages is three-fold. First, I conceptualize and explain the neoliberal education discourses on the need to create alternatives to public education, such as private and nonprofit education institutions. Secondly, after contextualizing these education discourses, I use social reproduction theory to investigate how schools reproduce existing …

A Postcolonial Comparative Study Of Secondary Education And Its Ideological Implications For West Indian Communities In Puerto Limon, Costa Rica ; Bluefields, Nicaragua ; And Old Providence Island, Colombia, Raquel Sanmiguel
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
The present study sets out to identify the ideological implications that the current national systems of secondary education have for West Indians who ended up living in the “"buffer zone"” between Latin American and Anglophone Caribbean histories: Raizales in Old Providence Island, Colombia; Afrolimonenses in Limón, Costa Rica, and Creoles in Bluefields, Nicaragua. The axis of examination is the school curriculum both as practice and as a set of pre-determined content and goals that teachers have to follow. It is a critical analysis of the ideologies that inform education, supported by an inquiry into the historical and cultural factors that …

Learning Experiences Of International Students In Online Course : Mixed Methods Study, Gulnara Sadykova
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
This study explored the learning experiences of international students in fully online courses offered through a US university. Employing a sociocultural framework, particularly ideas put forward by Russian psychologists L. Vygotsky and American scholars R. Scollon and S. W. Scollon, the study examined the interplay of host and native cultures in an online learning environment and studied its effect on international students' learning experiences, specifically on the learning experiences of one focal student from China.
Divisions And Mixing In "Go Down, Moses" By William Faulkner, Emiko Dodo
Divisions And Mixing In "Go Down, Moses" By William Faulkner, Emiko Dodo
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
This thesis examines the divisions and boundaries made by the mechanisms of separation that authorize a false perception of land, animals, blacks and women as commodities in William Faulkner's "Go Down, Moses." Asserting that "Go Down, Moses" describes mixing as well as divisions, this study demonstrates that the dichotomous boundaries imposed upon nature and humans repeatedly fail to function. Wilderness and plantation land can never be separated as they exist in mixture. And the racial boundary between whites and blacks is destabilized and blurred by characters like Lucas Beauchamp and Tomey's Turl, who engage in resistance against the society whose …

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
The primary purpose of this research is to present a successful model of a Palestinian EFL ICT-using teacher; through investigating the viability of a Palestinian EFL teacher to effectively use ICT as a medium in the classroom in a basic school. The research presents a pioneering idea that focuses on the pedagogical ability of the teacher to design and teach governmental EFL material via technology in a developing, occupied and besieged area (The Gaza Strip: Palestine). The research is meant to present a successful demonstrative study that would address Palestinian EFL teachers, decision makers, school administrators and sponsors.
Phonetics And Phonology Of Chicahuaxtla Triqui Tones, Kosuke Matsukawa
Phonetics And Phonology Of Chicahuaxtla Triqui Tones, Kosuke Matsukawa
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Chicahuaxtla Triqui (Otomanguean, Mexico) is one of the rare tone languages with five contrastive level tones and its underlying tone system is even more complicated than its surface five-level tone system. The complexity of its underlying tone system has developed through the historical tone shifts from Proto-Triqui. The surface tone system of Chicahuaxtla Triqui is also unusually complicated and its complexity led to the insufficient analysis of the previous studies (e.g. Longacre 1952, 1957, 1959; Good 1978). To understand the tone system and tonal phonology of Chicahuaxtla Triqui, we must know their diachronic development from Proto-Triqui because historical tone shifts, …
What If Oedipus Was A Queen? : What Freud And Lacan Can Tell Us Today About Femininity Through Fairy Tales And Their Reinterpretations, Taylor Victoria Churchill
What If Oedipus Was A Queen? : What Freud And Lacan Can Tell Us Today About Femininity Through Fairy Tales And Their Reinterpretations, Taylor Victoria Churchill
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
This thesis argues against the interpretations of Sigmund Freud's Oedipus complex and Jacques Lacan's graph of sexuation as either misogynistic or anti-woman. The Oedipus complex has often been considered and taught as an explanation for binary sexual difference and heterosexual identity. This thesis will dispute such considerations through re-reading Freud himself among other literary scholars. Thus, the critiques that treat the complex as hetero-normative and homogeneous will be disproved. Additionally, psychoanalysts and academic critics alike accuse Lacan of a phallocentric framework. Because of this phallocentrism, Lacan is doubly accused of misogyny and patriarchy. Through reading his work on feminine sexuality, …

Flowers In The Trenches : The Experiences Of Women In The Landscaping Profession, Paul E. Calarco, Jr.
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
This research project aims to provide an in-depth analysis of women in the landscaping field. It is important to expand on the literature on nontraditional blue-collar occupations, as more women are moving into these jobs in this 21st century. According to the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics (2001), the landscape and horticultural services industry is ranked 11th in the top twenty fastest growing service industries, almost two times the average for job growth. This occupation represents a significant, viable and fruitful arena for sociological investigation, as well a fantastic occupational option for women.
Do It Because I Said So ... Please? : The Connection Between Supervisor Interpersonal Justice, Perceived Power, And Employee Reactions, Ellen Weissblum
Do It Because I Said So ... Please? : The Connection Between Supervisor Interpersonal Justice, Perceived Power, And Employee Reactions, Ellen Weissblum
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
The purpose of this set of studies was to investigate the linkage between interpersonally just or unjust behavior on the part of a supervisor and the perception of referent, coercive, and legitimate power as perceived by subordinates. It was proposed that lower levels of interpersonal justice on the part of a supervisor would result in the perception that the supervisor possessed a greater degree of coercive power and a lower degree of referent power. It was furthermore proposed that, consistent with prior research, referent power would be positively related to task commitment; coercive power would be positively related to reactance; …
The Effects Of Interactive Strategies Approach On At-Risk Kindergarten Children's Spelling Development, Sun Hwa Lee
The Effects Of Interactive Strategies Approach On At-Risk Kindergarten Children's Spelling Development, Sun Hwa Lee
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
This study involved secondary analyses of an existing kindergarten developmental spelling data set which was collected using the Developmental Spelling Test (DST; Tangel & Blachman, 1992, 1995) in Scanlon and her colleagues' 2005 study (Scanlon, Vellutino, Small, Fanuele, & Sweeney, 2005). The purpose of the current study is to examine whether the early literacy instruction/intervention approach called the Interactive Strategies Approach (ISA; Scanlon, Anderson, & Sweeney, 2010; Vellutino & Scanlon, 2002) is effective for improving at-risk children's spelling development.
Political Economy On The Postclassic Western Maya Frontier, Elizabeth Hudson Paris
Political Economy On The Postclassic Western Maya Frontier, Elizabeth Hudson Paris
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
This study investigates the economic organization of the small hilltop sites of Moxviquil and Huitepec, in the Jovel Valley of highland Chiapas, Mexico. In this study, I examine degree to which households at these sites had the autonomy to independently produce, consume or trade the fruits of their labor, and to what degree was their production controlled and/or consumed by more powerful sociopolitical forces. In particular, I focus on the growth and prosperity of these sites during the transition from the Late Classic period (A.D. 700-1000) to the Early Postclassic period (A.D. 1000-1250), a period when the political systems, economies, …

Searchin’ His Eyes, Lookin’ For Traces: Piri Reis’ World Map Of 1513 & Its Islamic Iconographic Connections (A Reading Through Bagdat 334 And Proust), Karen C. Pinto
History Faculty Publications
The remnant of the 1513 world map of the Ottoman corsair (and later admiral) Muhiddin Piri, a.k.a. Piri Reis, with its focus on the Atlantic and the New World can be ranked as one of the most famous and controversial maps in the annals of the history of cartography. Following its discovery at Topkapi Palace in 1929, this early modern Ottoman map has raised baffling questions regarding its fons et origo. Some scholars posited ancient sea kings or aliens from outer space as the original creators; while the influence of Columbus’ own map and early Renaissance cartographers tantalized others. One …
Acquisition Of The Non-Generic Definite Article By Spanish Learners Of English As A Foreign Language, Christina Isabelli, Rachel Slough
Acquisition Of The Non-Generic Definite Article By Spanish Learners Of English As A Foreign Language, Christina Isabelli, Rachel Slough
Scholarship
This study explains the acquisition of the non-generic uses of the English definite article the by L2 learners. Chilean university students completed a questionnaire containing deleted obligatory uses of the. in all, four identified categories showed to have different accuracy rates. Of the four categories, the one most similar to the L1 was the least difficult to acquire while the most different resulted as the most difficult. This concurs with other research and can be explained by L1 rules that are transferred to the L2. The other two categories did not show the same acquisition rate as compared to previous …

Observing Census Enumeration Of Non-English Speaking Households In The 2010 Census: Spanish Report, Christina Isabelli, Yuling Pan, Lubkemann Stephen
Scholarship
This study was part of an ethnographic research project in the 2010 Census Assessment and Research Program to observe the 2010 Census Nonresponse Followup interviews with households that speak a language other than English, in areas of the U.S. with heavy concentrations of residents with limited English proficiency. A multilingual research team consisting of seven sub-teams in the seven primary languages (Arabic, Chinese, Korean, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, and Vietnamese) was commissioned to carry out the research in the 2010 Census.
The objectives of this research were to identify: (1) how language and socio-cultural factors affect the enumeration of non-English-speaking populations …
A Multi-Method Investigation Of The Effectiveness And Utility Of Delayed Corrective Feedback In Second-Language Oral Production, James Hunter
TESOL Faculty Scholarship
A major challenge in second-language pedagogy and research is that of determining linguistic competence. Spontaneous oral production gives some indication of the state of a learner’s interlanguage, but the presence of non-target-like forms in such production confounds the analysis since the teacher or researcher cannot be certain whether such forms are random or systematic. Corrective feedback (CF) in oral production, usually in the form of recasts or elicitation, can thus appear arbitrary and inconsistent. This thesis investigates the effectiveness of delayed CF, in which representative samples of learners’ non-target-like production are systematically collected and tracked. The investigation employed three methods: …
