Examinng Talker Effects In The Perception Of Native And Foreign-Accented Speech, Conor T. Mclennan, Julio Alvarez Gonzalez
Examinng Talker Effects In The Perception Of Native And Foreign-Accented Speech, Conor T. Mclennan, Julio Alvarez Gonzalez
Psychology Faculty Publications
Understanding the circumstances under which talker (and other types of) variability affects language perception represents an important area of research in the field of spoken word recognition. Previous work has demonstrated that talker effects are more likely when processing is relatively slow (M(c)Lennan & Luce, 2005). Given that listeners may take longer to process foreign-accented speech than native-accented speech (Munro & Derwing, Language and Speech, 38, 289-306 1995), talker effects should be more likely when listeners are presented with words spoken in a foreign accent than when they are presented with those same words spoken …

Object Recognition Based On Shape And Function: Inspired By Children's Word Acquisition, Akihiro Eguchi
Object Recognition Based On Shape And Function: Inspired By Children's Word Acquisition, Akihiro Eguchi
Inquiry: The University of Arkansas Undergraduate Research Journal
This paper explores a new approach to computational object recognition by borrowing an idea from child language acquisition studies in developmental psychology. Whereas previous image recognition research used shape to recognize and label a target object, the model proposed in this study added the function of the object resulting in a more accurate recognition. This study makes use of new gaming technology, Microsoft’s Kinect, in implementing the proposed new object recognition model. A demonstration of the model developed in this project properly infers different names for similarly shaped objects and the same name for differently shaped objects.

A Strategic Plan For Engaging Undergraduate Speech Pathology And Audiology Students In The Research Enterprise, Stephen M. Tasko
Academic Leadership Academy
The goal of this project is to develop a strategic plan for the Speech Pathology and Audiology Research Experience, which is a program designed to increase undergraduate student engagement in research activities. The emphasis on undergraduate students is based on the view that the sooner research opportunities are introduced and ‘demystified’, the sooner students envision this as a viable professional option.

Nebraska Center for Research on Children, Youth, Families, and Schools: Faculty Publications
Objective—This randomized trial of a family-focused preventive intervention for Mexican American (MA) adolescents evaluated intervention effects on adolescent substance use, internalizing and externalizing symptoms, and school discipline and grade records in 8th grade, one year after completion of the intervention. The study also examined hypothesized mediators and moderators of intervention effects. Method—Stratified by language of program delivery (English vs. Spanish), the trial included a sample of 516 MA adolescents (50.8% female; M =12.3 years, SD=.54) and at least one caregiver that were randomized to receive a low dosage control group workshop or the 9-week group intervention that included …
Wetlands, Property Rights, And The Due Process Deficit In Environmental Law, Jonathan H. Adler
Wetlands, Property Rights, And The Due Process Deficit In Environmental Law, Jonathan H. Adler
Faculty Publications
In Sackett v. Environmental Protection Agency a unanimous Supreme Court held that private landowners could seek judicial review of an Administrative Compliance Order issued by the Environmental Protection Agency alleging that their land contained wetlands subject to regulation under the Clean Water Act. The Court’s decision rested on statutory grounds, but the same result may have been dictated by principles of due process. Under the CWA, federal regulators have asserted authority over waters and dry lands alike and sought to expand federal jurisdiction well beyond constitutional limits. Under existing regulations, landowners have little notice or certainty as to whose lands …
Sub-Saharan Africa: Searching For A Social Contract, David D. Mayen
Sub-Saharan Africa: Searching For A Social Contract, David D. Mayen
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This thesis examines the phenomenon of civil war and state failure in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) from a social contract perspective. Its main hypothesis is that authoritarianism will lead to state failure in the context of SSA. In this regard, SSA states are political communities that have not done enough to promote and develop a social contract that is compatible with the region's sociopolitical and structural peculiarities. Since civil war and state failure have hampered different dimensions of human progress in SSA, analyzing the main patterns of conflict will inevitably lead to an underlying incompatibility between existing governing political structures and …
Student Visual Narratives Giving Voice To Positive Learning Experiences – A Contribution To Educational Reform, Ulrika Bergmark, Catrine Kostenius
Student Visual Narratives Giving Voice To Positive Learning Experiences – A Contribution To Educational Reform, Ulrika Bergmark, Catrine Kostenius
Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)
The aim of this paper is to explore students’ positive experiences of their learning through the use of visual narratives, observation, and field notes in two secondary school classes in Sweden. Four themes were found: (1) knowing the needs of mind and body, (2) embracing each other in mutual support, (3) learning in a facilitating environment, and (4) using a variety of learning modalities. Students wished to have a voice in setting the curriculum, favored a variety of assignments, and sought to expand their learning environment beyond the classroom. Finally, challenges for teachers and school leaders are discussed.

Investigating Gender Bias In The Ratings Of College Applicants, Candice Danielle Davis
Theses Digitization Project
The purpose of this study was to reexamine the Goldberg Paradigm and the Gender Role Congruity Theory in the academic setting. The present study was interested in examining the attitudes of both male and female evaluators in the college setting. The presented study also predicted that the self-evaluations of the participants would vary due to the application they evaluated. The study manipulated gender and major (math, business, English literature, and art) as independent variables in the mock applications. Data was collected from undergraduate students. After reading the mock applications, participants would complete a survey.

Prospective Teachers Of English Learners' Error Detection In Oral Output Of Nonnative English Speakers, Begüm Yengel
Theses Digitization Project
This project is designed to present the extent to which native English speakers (NESs) and nonnative English speakers NNESs) detect errors in NNESs' oral output. It also aims to shed light on the error of perception of participants from different first-language (L1) backgrounds, and intends to uncover the possible underlying reasons of the variations in their detection rates.
A Critical Discourse Analysis Of Language Policy In California, Steven Gomez
A Critical Discourse Analysis Of Language Policy In California, Steven Gomez
Theses Digitization Project
This thesis aims to investigate the issues surrounding California's Proposition 227, an important language policy passed in June of 1998 which drastically limited bilingual education. This proposition requires that all public school systems be in English only. Using a method known as Critical Discourse Analysis, this study exposes the underlying bias embedded in the discourse of newspaper articles from: the Los Angeles Times, the Orange County Register, and the Sacramento Bee. After analyzing articles from these newspapers various themes emerged which indicated that each newspaper adhered to either assimilationists' position which is conservative, or a pluralist position which is backed …
Connecting Burke And Levinas: A Counter To The Rhetoric And Ethics Of Expediency, Gerry Joseph Morrow
Connecting Burke And Levinas: A Counter To The Rhetoric And Ethics Of Expediency, Gerry Joseph Morrow
Theses Digitization Project
This thesis exlores the current rhetoric of expediency in the United States and the expedient ethical perspective it fosters. It argues that the competitive rhetoric of corporate America has not only invaded every sector of society, but that it has caused untold human suffering by promoting what has become a mind-set, an expedient ideology.
In Good Conscience: Expressions Of Judicial Conscience In Federal Appellate Opinions, Sarah M.R. Cravens
In Good Conscience: Expressions Of Judicial Conscience In Federal Appellate Opinions, Sarah M.R. Cravens
Duquesne Law Review
Justice Holmes, an icon of both the theory and the practice of the appellate judicial role, once famously said that the job of the judge is not to "do justice" but simply to apply the law. Along similar lines, law professors are forever reminding our students that when referring to judicial opinions, they ought to say that courts "hold" or "state" or "reason," but not that they "feel" or "believe." But, of course, judges are human, so we know that they do feel and believe things. They have convictions and commitments that are important to them, both personally and in …
The Rock Art Of The Blood Of The Ancestors Grotto (11sa557): The Archaeology Of Religious Theater, Lenville J. Stelle
The Rock Art Of The Blood Of The Ancestors Grotto (11sa557): The Archaeology Of Religious Theater, Lenville J. Stelle
Anthropology Faculty Scholarship
11SA557 is a pictographic rock art site in the Hill Section of southern Illinois. To date, 33 icons, both simple and complex, have been identified. The distinctive biophysical qualities of the site have compelled an interpretation that it was in some fundamental sense “female.” Ethnohistorical and ethnographic explorations inform a treatment of 11SA557 as a religious theater where female puberty ceremonies of the Dhegiha Sioux were performed. Exploitation likely dates to the Protohistoric period. Twenty-one elements of religious theater are explored archaeologically and ethnographically. The application of the heuristic model of religious theater afforded a measureable enhancement of the understanding …
Donald Davidson's Semantics: Radical Interpretation, Triangulation, And The Ambiguity Problem, Karen Duffy
Donald Davidson's Semantics: Radical Interpretation, Triangulation, And The Ambiguity Problem, Karen Duffy
Philosophy Student Work
Donald Davidson was one of the most prominent philosophers of the 20th century. His work is extensive, dense, and controversial. This paper seeks to look at one part of Davidson’s philosophy: his philosophy of language, and in particular, his ideas about meaning. My first aim in this project is to present Davidson’s proposals about meaning as a unified meaning theory – a theory that can specify the meaning of any expression in a language. This theory contains two major parts: the proposal that a properly constrained truth theory can serve as a meaning theory, and the process of radical interpretation, …

The National Center for Engineering and Technology Education (NCETE) invited a small group of experienced engineering educators, curriculum developers, cognitive scientists, and professional development providers to engage in the discussion of guidelines for the selection and development of engineering design challenges suitable for all students in grades 9-12. That effort resulted in seven provocative papers (Carr & Strobel, 2011; Denson, 2011; Eisenkraft, 2011; Hynes et al., 2011; Jonassen, 2011a; Schunn, 2011; Sneider, 2011) that are accessible on the NCETE web site at http://ncete.org/flash/research.php NCETE hosted two Caucuses, each consisting of “a group of people united to promote an agreed-upon cause” …
Metaphors And Their Impact On Mentioning Marital Relationships In The Holy Quran, Ali Abdulaziz Siour
Metaphors And Their Impact On Mentioning Marital Relationships In The Holy Quran, Ali Abdulaziz Siour
Al-miʿyār
This research studies the term "metonymy" and its impact on the Qur'anic interpretation of marital relations. The research is divided into three main chapters, where the first explores the definition of metonymy in language and terminology, in addition to the relationship between metonymy and metaphor, and its general purposes in the Qur'an. In the second chapter, the paper illustrates the principles and themes discussed about marital relations in the Qur'an, and discusses the warnings against explicit obscene talk and explicit description of marital relations. Lastly, the third chapter delves into the purposes of metonymy and its effects when referring to …
International Intellectual Property Scholars Series: Intellectual Property And Asian Values, Peter K. Yu, Peter K. Yu
International Intellectual Property Scholars Series: Intellectual Property And Asian Values, Peter K. Yu, Peter K. Yu
Marquette Intellectual Property Law Review
From Niall Ferguson to Fareed Zakaria, commentators have paid growing attention to the rise of Asia and its implications for the West. Recent years have also seen the emergence of a growing volume of literature on intellectual property developments in Asia, in particular China and India. Few commentators, however, have explored whether Asian countries will take unified positions on international intellectual property law and policy.
Commissioned for the Inaugural International Intellectual Property Scholars Series, this article fills the void by examining intellectual property developments in relation to the decades-old 'Asian values' debate. Drawing on the region's diversity in economic and …

I propose a renewed emphasis on my Spanish language skills -reading, writing, speaking and listening- through: 1) speaking with native speakers; 2) immersion in Spanish media -magazines, newspapers, television, movies, etc.; 3) travel to Spanish speaking countries; and 4) a journal project in my target language. These activities will refresh and improve my Spanish and give me newfound connections with the Spanish speaking world and its cultures, making me a better Spanish teacher.
The Ancient Roots Of Humor Theory, Lisa Glebatis Perks
The Ancient Roots Of Humor Theory, Lisa Glebatis Perks
Communication and Media Faculty Publications
Many modern humor scholars have oversimplified their summaries of Plato, Aristotle, Cicero and Quintilian's views on humor, focusing on the philosophers' cautionary warnings about the rhetorical efficacy and ethics of humor Although the philosophers did write much on the offensive nature of jests, which can be considered illustrative of superiority theory, I describe elements of the incongruity and relief theories of humor motivation in their work. There is evidence to suggest that all four philosophers found humor to be a fitting and effective response to certain exigencies. It is more accurate to summarize their views thus: Humor has the potential …

Preventing Long-Term English Learners: Results From A Project-Based Differentiated Eld Intervention Program, Magaly Lavadenz, Ph.D., Elvira G. Armas, Ed.D., Rosalinda Barajas
Practitioner Journal Articles
In this article the authors describe efforts taken by a small southern California school district to develop and implement an innovative, research-based English Language Development program to address a growing concern over long-term English Learners (LTELs) in their district. With support from the Weingart Foundation this afterschool program served 3rd and 7th grade LTELs between 2008–2011 to accelerate language and literacy acquisition and prevent prolonged EL status. Program evaluation results indicated that the intervention was associated with improved English language proficiency as measured by the California English Language Development Test. Results also showed a heightened awareness of effective …

The Dialectical-Level Reflective Habits Of Middle-Grade Teachers: A Phenomenological Study, Tina Humphrey Boogren
The Dialectical-Level Reflective Habits Of Middle-Grade Teachers: A Phenomenological Study, Tina Humphrey Boogren
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The literature leads us to believe that an educator must be reflective in order to improve one's practice, and in terms of reflection, Van Manen's (1977) highest level of reflection, the dialectical-level, is presented as a worthy aim for all educators. But should this type of reflection truly be a goal for all educators? This study sought to uncover the phenomenon of dialectical-level reflection. Dialectical, or critical-level, reflection is the process of analyzing, reconsidering and questioning experiences in order to continually adjust one's practice with an eye towards improvement. This phenomenological study explores the lived experiences of five middle school …
