The Organization Of American States (Oas) In Rhetoric And Reality, Elizabeth Marie Moore Apr 2012

The Organization Of American States (Oas) In Rhetoric And Reality, Elizabeth Marie Moore

Annual Celebration of Student Scholarship and Creativity

The purpose of this study is to examine how well the countries in the Western Hemisphere translate Organization of American States’ (OAS) resolutions into actual meaningful legislation, and how international discourse influences, or does not, domestic policy. This study will utilize the data program QDA Miner in order to better analyze texts of agreements and treaties put forth by the OAS, and to highlight the correlation between different types of rhetoric and meaningful member state action. Data will be gathered primarily from the OAS’ own data bases and compiled into the QDA software for analysis. This analysis will allow the …

International Security, Development, And Human Rights: Policy Conversion Or Conflict?, Miao-Ling Lin Hasenkamp Apr 2012

International Security, Development, And Human Rights: Policy Conversion Or Conflict?, Miao-Ling Lin Hasenkamp

Journal of International and Global Studies

This article uses an institutional network governance approach to explore the overlapping dimension of the policy fields between security, development, and human rights, reflected in the US and German provincial reconstruction teams (PRTs) in Afghanistan. The past two decades have witnessed a gradually changing paradigm in academic and policy debates regarding the questions of the normative basis of world order and possibilities for tackling imminent threats to security and peace (i.e. intra-state armed conflicts, failed states, terrorism, poverty, and deepening inequality). The introduction of concepts such as “human security” and “the right to humanitarian intervention/responsibility to protect (R2P)” as well …

El Ícaro Cambiante: Lenguaje Y Curación En Santa Rosa De Huacaria, Alison Sever

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Analysis Of The Black Fairy By Fenton Johnson, Crystal Tolbert Apr 2012

Analysis Of The Black Fairy By Fenton Johnson, Crystal Tolbert

4710 English Undergraduate Research: Children’s Literature

This essay examines a rare early twentieth-century children’s story about and geared towards African Americans: “The Black Fairy” by Fenton Johnson. “The Black Fairy” was published in The Upward Path (1920), an anthology designed as a “Reader for Colored Children” that contained poetry, essays, short stories, folklore, biographical sketches, and drawings by prominent African American writers, educators, and other personalities of the time. Through a four -part analysis, including how the story fits into literary history, the ways in which the story responds to its historical and cultural context, the “cultural work” of the text, and an exploration of …

An Austrian Identity Crisis: Conservative Thought, Political Posters, And Questions Of National Identity During The First Republic., Meyer Weinshel Apr 2012

An Austrian Identity Crisis: Conservative Thought, Political Posters, And Questions Of National Identity During The First Republic., Meyer Weinshel

German and Russian Studies Honors Projects

The political writings of Karl Lueger and Georg Ritter von Schönerer, the founders of the Austrian Christian Social and German National Parties, shaped the right-wing political discourse regarding national identity after the Austro-Hungarian Ausgleich in 1867. As Habsburg hegemony in Central Europe crumbled after the First World War, this conservative political discourse concerning Austrian identity was resurrected in the political posters of the Austrian First Republic. Through an examination of Christian Social and German National constructions of national identity in both pre- and post-World War I Austria, this paper seeks to determine the role that conservative constructions of Austrian National …

This workshop was intended to facilitate exchanges on recent questions related to the names of persons and to confront different multidisciplinary approaches in a field of investigation where geneticists and historians, geographers, sociologists and ethnologists have all an active part. Here are the abstracts of some contributions.

Illuminating The Infelice: Defiance And Transcendence In The 19th Century Operatic Madwoman, Claire Biringer Apr 2012

Illuminating The Infelice: Defiance And Transcendence In The 19th Century Operatic Madwoman, Claire Biringer

Music Honors Projects

The female protagonist’s mad scene, since coming into true vogue in the early nineteenth-century Italian opera tradition, has been prized for its dramatic and poignant emotive qualities. This project explores four nineteenth-century mad scenes; Donizetti’s Lucia di Lammermoor (1835), Bellini’s I Puritani (1835), Meyerbeer’s Dinorah (1859), and Verdi’s Macbeth (1847), surveying the literature of each scene and providing formal analysis of musical attributes such as harmony, melodic structure, and formal design, all in comparison to generic operatic conventions. Musical elements generally associated with the operatic madwoman include the orchestral recollection of significant past themes, virtuosic coloratura lines, and the presence …

Leather Whips And Rapier Wit: Observations On Sadomasochists And The World They Have Created, Samantha Ann Roberg Apr 2012

Leather Whips And Rapier Wit: Observations On Sadomasochists And The World They Have Created, Samantha Ann Roberg

Academic Symposium of Undergraduate Scholarship

What kind of world is the kink and fetish community? Is it a deep, dark, devilish abyss splattered with bodily fluids, coursing with gyrating bodies stomping out its heartbeat? Polite society seemingly thinks so. Bondage, and even worse, sadomasochism are portrayed by today's television and media as satanic and evil, not what love between a man and woman should be. In today's day and age, love is no longer limited to just one man or one woman, but still seems only appropriately hidden away behind closed doors, hidden from parents or children, a dirty act until marriage. What happens when …

The Interaction Of Wolof And French In Dakarois Families: A Specific Look At Ouakam Households, Ashlee Sang

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

The purpose of this study was to show the unique multilingual situation in Dakar, which manifests itself most frequently with a mixture of Wolof and French use. By using the neighborhood of Ouakam as an indicator of Dakar as a whole, one can see the immense impact of both Wolof and French in family settings. More importantly, the interaction of Wolof and French in Ouakam households is used as a lens to show the social impact language has on families in Dakar.

Science And Society: The Role Of Long-Term Studies In Environmental Stewardship, Charles T. Driscoll, Kathleen F. Lambert, F. Stuart Chapin, David J. Nowake, Thomas A. Spies, Frederick J. Swanson, David B. Kittredge, Clarisse M. Hart

Civil and Environmental Engineering - All Scholarship

Long-term research should play a crucial role in addressing grand challenges in environmental stewardship. We examine the efforts of five Long Term Ecological Research Network sites to enhance policy, management, and conservation decisions for forest ecosystems. In these case studies, we explore the approaches used to inform policy on atmospheric deposition, public land management, land conservation, and urban forestry, including decisionmaker engagement and integration of local knowledge, application of models to analyze the potential consequences of policy and management decisions, and adaptive management to generate new knowledge and incorporate it into decisionmaking. Efforts to enhance the role of long-term research …

Migration Of Indian Health Professionals To Selected European Nations: The Case Of Denmark, Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, Ayona Bhattacharjee Apr 2012

Migration Of Indian Health Professionals To Selected European Nations: The Case Of Denmark, Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, Ayona Bhattacharjee

Working Papers

India's comparative advantage in health care is due to a large resource pool and competence in English. Indian migration to the US, UK or Australia has been widely studied, but not much attention has been given to the Scandinavian countries. This paper fills the gap by analysing recent trends and prospects for Indian health professionals in Denmark, Netherlands, Norway and Sweden. It combines available data sources, personal communication with different migration boards, interview of two international recruiters and a migrant health professional. Additionally, it looks at Indian R and D tie ups in the sector with these countries, which have …

Student Mobility From India To Selected European Countries: The Case Of Germany And France, Shahana Mukherjee, Rupa Chanda Apr 2012

Student Mobility From India To Selected European Countries: The Case Of Germany And France, Shahana Mukherjee, Rupa Chanda

Working Papers

The development of European policies on higher education in the last two decades has facilitated and encouraged (inward) non-European student mobility. This paper examines the issue of student mobility between two European host countries, namely Germany and France and a leading source country, namely India. Often regarded as the "middle players", the paper identifies factors that drive the demand for higher education in these alternative destinations and elements that have contributed to their growing visibility among Indian students. The paper draws on findings from a recently conducted survey on Indian students in Europe to also identify the challenges associated with …

Indian Student Mobility To Selected European Countries: An Overview, Shahana Mukherjee, Rupa Chanda Apr 2012

Indian Student Mobility To Selected European Countries: An Overview, Shahana Mukherjee, Rupa Chanda

Working Papers

One of the most significant changes in recent years has been an evolution in the role of education in the global arena. As education has increasingly assumed the role of a tradable service, countries from all parts of the world have become active participants in the ongoing internationalization of higher education. One of the key outcomes of this process has been the phenomenal growth in international student mobility since 1998. A burgeoning industry which generates revenues of up to 90 billion dollars clearly spells strong financial incentives for participants of this industry. It also implies that factors influencing international student …

Islamization As Part Of Globalization: Some Southeast Asian Examples, Ron Lukens-Bull, Amanda Pandich, John P. Woods Apr 2012

Islamization As Part Of Globalization: Some Southeast Asian Examples, Ron Lukens-Bull, Amanda Pandich, John P. Woods

Journal of International and Global Studies

In both popular and academic imagination, Islamization and globalization are the opposing processes, representing ”the clash of civilizations” (Huntington, 1993,1996). In Southeast Asia, specifically, globalization is imagined as something distinctly Western and, hence, inherently at odds with Islam, while Islam, meanwhile, is seen as the natural enemy of globalization. This paper instead sees Muslims as active participants in globalization. Further, it explores the concept of “Muslim globalization” to suggest that Islam has long been a globalizing force alongside Western-based capitalism and other forces. It explores this general model by using examples primarily from Southeast Asia

The Sinkholes Of Global Finance: Racialization And Cosmopolitanism Among Financial Elites In Malaysia, Laura Elder Ph.D. Apr 2012

The Sinkholes Of Global Finance: Racialization And Cosmopolitanism Among Financial Elites In Malaysia, Laura Elder Ph.D.

Journal of International and Global Studies

An ethnographic examination of the day-to-day networking sociality of financial elites in Malaysia, Singapore, and Hong Kong shows that, in line with ethnographic studies of core country elites, the subjectivities inculcated among hedge fund managers show racial and class cleavages, but in fund managers’ work, bridging capital structures takes primacy, while bridging structures of privilege remains unacknowledged and thus provides an advantage to those who display conspicuously cosmopolitan consumption and networking sociality. Simultaneously, fund managers’ pervasive ascription of objectivity to a perspective associated with white masculinity creates a structural disadvantage for women, racialized others, and those lacking training or networking …

Mobile Technology Update To Delone And Mclean Model Of Information Success, Jason Ryberg Apr 2012

Mobile Technology Update To Delone And Mclean Model Of Information Success, Jason Ryberg

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

Senior managers are challenged to measure the success of their IT systems when justifying technology investments needed to meet the organization"â„¢s mission. Due to increasing implementation of mobile technology, enterprise adoption of smartphones is no exception. Traditionally, the DeLone and McLean Information Systems (IS) Success Model has been proven as a valid framework for measuring IS success. However, it has not been updated to address the success variables related to mobile technology. Many studies on mobile technology have reviewed mobile success, but none have attempted theoretical assimilation. This thesis attempts to correct this situation by examining the DeLone and McLean …
