In the summer of 2011, we were given the opportunity to travel to Graz, Austria to complete a sevenweek surgical internship. We were able to assist with an organ transplant team at the Medical University of Graz. As interns, our responsibilities included attending morning rounds, drawing blood samples, setting up IVs and assisting in several surgeries. We also had the chance to observe several different specialties in surgery including cardiothoracic, neurology, obstetrics, pulmonary, pediatrics, reconstructive, and orthopedics. During our entire stay, we were on-call and responded to emergencies, which included traveling to a nearby city to collect organs for transplantation. …

The Epistemological Status Of Theoretical Simplicity, Yineth Sanchez Apr 2012

The Epistemological Status Of Theoretical Simplicity, Yineth Sanchez

Undergraduate Student Symposium

In this paper, I argue that theoretical simplicity is not an epistemic virtue. Therefore, we need not prefer the simpler explanation of two competing scientific theories. First, I clarify the concept of theoretical simplicity as it figures into discussions in the philosophy of science. Next, I evaluate the strongest arguments in favor of this view as a criterion of theory selection. Then, I present two instances where theoretical simplicity is not preferable as such a criterion. Lastly, I show that while there may be a number of nonepistemic criteria of theory choice, including simplicity, none of them bears upon truth. …

The Study Of Lagenidium Giganteum Crinkler Genes, Ana Paula Delgado Apr 2012

The Study Of Lagenidium Giganteum Crinkler Genes, Ana Paula Delgado

Undergraduate Student Symposium

Lagenidium giganteum is an entomopathogenic oomycete known for its ability to infect and kill the larvae of mosquitoes. This project seeks to find a potential alternative to chemical insecticides by isolating and sequencing the pathogenic genes found in this organism. More specifically, crinkler genes were targeted, as they have been associated with host cell toxicity in plant pathogens. A combination of several wet-lab techniques such as polymerase chain reaction, gel electrophoresis, gel extraction, and RNA extraction; and the use of bioinformatics tools are used in this project. These techniques will be used for the analysis and screening of the transcriptome …

Total Synthesis Of Functionalized Acenes, Reena Parikh Apr 2012

Total Synthesis Of Functionalized Acenes, Reena Parikh

Undergraduate Student Symposium

Research project focused on the preparation of acene dinitriles from benzene 1,2-dicarbaldehyde. A Wittig reagent of fumaronitrile and triethylphosphine yielded a new C-C double. The increased the acidity of the α-H, between the new alkene bond and a cyano group, allowed an Aldol reaction to take place and resulted in a ring closure. Condensation reaction established aromaticity in the new ring, carrying dicyano functionality. To allow additional ring formations via reaction sequence repetitions, nitrile groups were reduced with DIBALH to dialdehydes.

School Culture: A Sequential Mixed Methods Exploratory Meta-Analysis, Cynthia Pritchett

Theses and Dissertations

This multi-national study used systematic review as a data collection technique to determine the current field of empirical studies that posit a definition of school culture and its characteristics. The data gathered from a qualitative synthesis and analysis of the acquired studies informed school culture taxonomy. The taxonomy presented domains, classes, categories, characteristics, and elements, which became the variables for meta-analysis. This adapted methodological process resulted in a valid and generalizable definition of school culture. The adapted sequential mixed methods exploratory approach used in this study resulted in the generation of grounded theory. The grounded theory is a definition of …

Impact Of Hispanic Ethnic Concentration And Socioeconomic Status On Obesity Prevalence In Texas Counties, Jennifer J. Salinas, Elizabeth Rocha, Bassent Abdelbary, Jennifer L. Gay, Ken Sexton Apr 2012

Impact Of Hispanic Ethnic Concentration And Socioeconomic Status On Obesity Prevalence In Texas Counties, Jennifer J. Salinas, Elizabeth Rocha, Bassent Abdelbary, Jennifer L. Gay, Ken Sexton

Physician Assistant Studies Faculty Publications

The purpose of this study is to determine whether Hispanic ethnic concentration is associated with a higher prevalence of obesity and, if this relationship exists, whether it is affected by the socioeconomic environment. The study uses the Texas Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) linked to 2000 census data to access the relationship between prevalence of obesity, Hispanic ethnic concentration, poverty and level of education at a county-level. The findings suggest that the association of Hispanic ethnic concentration and obesity varies by socioeconomic environment. Although little influence was observed for % poverty, the relationship between Hispanic ethnic concentration and obesity …

Buddhist Reductionism And Free Will: Paleo-Compatibilism, Rick Repetti

Publications and Research

This is the second article in a four-article series that examines Buddhist responses to the Western philosophical problem of whether free will is compatible with “determinism,” the doctrine of universal causation. The first article focused on the first publications on this issue in the 1970s, the “early period”; the present article and the next examine key responses published in the last part of the Twentieth century and first part of the Twenty-first, the “middle period”; and the fourth article will examine responses published in the last few years. Whereas early-period scholars endorsed compatibilism, in the middle period the pendulum moved …

Triggering Relationships That Contextualize The Pathway For Student Success, Darin R. Eckton Apr 2012

Triggering Relationships That Contextualize The Pathway For Student Success, Darin R. Eckton

Theses and Dissertations

America invests large amounts of money in K-12 education to develop its human capital. As such, K-12 student success is vital to the human capital development and future of America's children and adolescents. There is significant concern for the K-12 students who are predictably at risk of not graduating from high school (e.g., low-income, ethnic minority, and first generation college students) let alone qualifying for and enrolling in postsecondary education. Over the past four decades student success has primarily been explained by sociological research on status attainment as well as social capital and cultural capital. However, very little research addresses …

College of Education and Human Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

To provide a high-quality education for all its students, schools must address a variety of needs that are related to physical, social and/or emotional health. School nurses are positioned to do that in the schools that they serve. Exploring how the school nurse intervenes to help children and their families to maintain a high level of health may contribute to an understanding of health care and academic achievement in the educational community. The purpose of this qualitative study is to gain an understanding of what a nurse does on a regular basis to provide health care to all children in …
