Liitukut Sugpiat'stun (We Are Learning How To Be Real People): Exploring Kodiak Alutiiq Literature Through Core Values, Alisha Susana Drabek Apr 2012

Liitukut Sugpiat'stun (We Are Learning How To Be Real People): Exploring Kodiak Alutiiq Literature Through Core Values, Alisha Susana Drabek

Anthropology

The decline of Kodiak Alutiiq oral tradition practices and limited awareness or understanding of archived stories has kept them from being integrated into school curriculum. This study catalogs an anthology of archived Alutiiq literature documented since 1804, and provides an historical and values-based analysis of Alutiiq literature, focused on the educational significance of stories as tools for individual and community wellbeing. The study offers an exploration of values, worldview and knowledge embedded in Alutiiq stories. It also provides a history of colonial impacts on Alutiiq education and an in-depth study of the early colonial observers and ethnographers who collected Alutiiq …

Losing Ground: An Ethnography Of Vulnerability And Climate Change In Shishmaref, Alaska, Elizabeth K. Marino Apr 2012

Losing Ground: An Ethnography Of Vulnerability And Climate Change In Shishmaref, Alaska, Elizabeth K. Marino

Anthropology

This dissertation presents an ethnography of vulnerability in Shishmaref, Alaska. The village of Shishmaref, population 563, faces imminent threat from increasing erosion and flooding events -- linked to climatic changes and ecological shift -- making the relocation of residents off of the island necessary in the foreseeable future. In spite of ongoing conversations with government agencies since 1974, an organized relocation has yet to occur in Shishmaref. While ecological shift and anthropogenic climate change are no doubt occurring in and around the island, the literature on vulnerability and disaster predicts that social systems contribute at least as much as ecological …

Health And Empires: Implications For Political Development On The Health Of The Inhabitants Of Great Moravia (9th--10th Centuries), Megan Michelle Ellicott

Anthropology

The early medieval period was a time of great change in Europe. Politically thee empires ruled Europe: Charlemagne's Carolingian Empire, the Holy Roman Empire and the Byzantine Empire. During this time early cities began to form in Europe, and new patterns of settlement developed. Great Moravia was a state level society in the southeastern region of the Czech Republic during the late 9th and early 10th centuries. This thesis explores the impact of urban development on the health of its inhabitants. In order to do this, rural (Josefov and Lahovice) and urban (Mikulcice-Kostelisko) skeletal populations were examined for cribra orbitalia, …

Reassessing The Wider Genetic Affiliations Of The Timor-Alor-Pantar Languages, Laura C. Robinson, Gary Holton Apr 2012

Reassessing The Wider Genetic Affiliations Of The Timor-Alor-Pantar Languages, Laura C. Robinson, Gary Holton

Alaska Native Language Center Faculty

The wider genealogical affiliations of the Timor-Alor-Pantar languages have been the subject of much speculation. These languages are surrounded by unrelated Austronesian languages, and attempts to locate related languages have focused on Papuan languages 800 km or more distant. In this paper we examine three hypotheses for genealogical relatedness, drawing on both pronominal and especially lexical evidence. We rely in particular on recent reconstructions of proto-Alor-Pantar vocabulary. Of the hypotheses evaluated here, we find the most striking similarities between TAP and the West Bomberai family. However, we conclude that the evidence currently available is insufficient to confirm a genealogical relationship …

Internal Classification Of The Alor-Pantar Language Family Using Computational Methods Applied To The Lexicon, Laura C. Robinson, Gary Holton Apr 2012

Internal Classification Of The Alor-Pantar Language Family Using Computational Methods Applied To The Lexicon, Laura C. Robinson, Gary Holton

Alaska Native Language Center Faculty

The non-Austronesian languages of Alor and Pantar in eastern Indonesia have been shown to be genetically related using the comparative method, but the identified phonological innovations are typologically common and do not delineate neat subgroups. We apply computational methods to recently-collected lexical data and are able to identify subgroups based on the lexicon. Crucially, the lexical data are coded for cognacy based on identified phonological innovations. This methodology can succeed even where phonological innovations themselves fail to identify subgroups, showing that computational methods using lexical data can be a powerful tool supplementing the comparative method.

Polishing The Mirror: A Multiple Methods Study Of The Relationship Between Teaching Style And The Application Of Technology In Alaska's Rural One To One Digital Classrooms, Larry S. Ledoux Apr 2012

Polishing The Mirror: A Multiple Methods Study Of The Relationship Between Teaching Style And The Application Of Technology In Alaska's Rural One To One Digital Classrooms, Larry S. Ledoux

Indigenous Studies

This mixed method survey study examined the inter-relationships between teaching styles and the depth of classroom-based technology applications used by teachers participating in 1:1 digitally enhanced classrooms in thirteen of Alaska's rural school districts. The promise of technology to catalyze the transformation of schools into learner centric environments preparing students to be 21st century learners has not been realized. Significant first order barriers have limited the digital learning resources necessary to systemically affect pedagogical change. During the last six years, various entities have sponsored digitally enhanced learning environments to stimulate the process of education reform. These initiatives, labeled as one-to-one …

Thule Plant And Driftwood Use At Cape Espenberg, Alaska, Laura J. Crawford Apr 2012

Thule Plant And Driftwood Use At Cape Espenberg, Alaska, Laura J. Crawford

Anthropology

This thesis addresses the question of Thule plant and woody fuel use at Cape Espenberg, Alaska between approximately AD 1500 and 1700. The objective of this thesis is to determine how the Thule at Cape Espenberg were using various plant species, including edible plant species and fuelwood species. Few studies have been done on prehistoric Arctic plant use, and so this study intends to add to this nascent but growing field. By examining charcoal and macrofossil remains, this thesis is also intended to discover similarities and differences between the Thule and their modern Inupiat descendants in terms of plant and …

Learning To Teach Where You Are: Preparation For Context-Responsive Teaching In Alaska's Teacher Certification Programs, Amy Louise Vinlove

Communication

Context-responsive teaching is defined in this project as teaching that responds to individual student needs and interests, linguistic backgrounds and family characteristics, the local community and the local natural environment. Context-responsive teaching, as defined in Chapter 1 of this dissertation, consolidates into one concept the pedagogical knowledge, skills and dispositions associated with culturally responsive teaching, place-based teaching, differentiated instruction, and purposeful collaboration with parents, families and communities. The research completed for this project examines current practices relative to preparing context-responsive teachers in Alaska's elementary and secondary teacher certification programs. A survey examining context-responsive teacher preparation experiences was developed and distributed …

Talking About Motherhood Matters: Articulation Of Population Policies Through National Day Rally Speeches In Singapore, Jasmine E. Tan Apr 2012

Talking About Motherhood Matters: Articulation Of Population Policies Through National Day Rally Speeches In Singapore, Jasmine E. Tan

Proceedings of the New York State Communication Association

Women’s reproductive rights have always been a site of contestation. The central question this paper seeks to answer is how motherhood is constructed through the repetition of population policies by government officials and how this articulation becomes the script through which motherhood is in turn performed. This paper examines the rhetorical construction of what it means to be a mother in Singapore through the analysis of National Day Rally Speeches. Two themes emerged from this analysis: (1) Motherhood is an expensive experience and, (2) Motherhood required lifestyle changes. By unwittingly painting motherhood as negative experiences, population policies in Singapore could …

Cross-Cultural Communication Within American And Chinese Colleagues In Multinational Organizations, Yue Li Apr 2012

Cross-Cultural Communication Within American And Chinese Colleagues In Multinational Organizations, Yue Li

Proceedings of the New York State Communication Association

Globalization is a mantra nowadays that has been employed to describe the highly active exchange activities between countries and regions across the globe. It takes a multidimensional form, connecting people and things regardless of spatial and temporal confines, and permeating into all walks of life. Along with changes brought by this dynamic international interaction, a myriad of organizations, no longer isolated and static, are beginning to ride on this gravy train by expanding tentacles into every cranny and nook of the globe.

One of the challenges that is facing the multinational organizations is the increasing diversity of the workforce and …

Outage Detection Via Real-Time Social Stream Analysis: Leveraging The Power Of Online Complaints, Eriq Augustine, Caitlin Cushing, Alex Dekhtyar, Kevin Mcentee, Kimberly Paterson, Matt Tognetti

Computer Science and Software Engineering

Over the past couple of years, Netflix has significantly expanded its online streaming offerings, which now encompass multiple delivery platforms and thousands of titles available for instant view. This paper documents the design and development of an outage detection system for the online services provided by Netflix. Unlike other internal quality control measures used at Netflix, this system uses only publicly available information: the tweets, or Twitter posts, that mention the word “Netflix,” and has been developed and deployed externally, on servers independent of the Netflix infrastructure. This paper discussed the system and provides assessment of the accuracy of its …

The Presence Of Regional Accents In Electrolarynx Speech And The Resultant Effect On Overall Intelligibility., Brian Madden, Eugene Coyle Apr 2012

The Presence Of Regional Accents In Electrolarynx Speech And The Resultant Effect On Overall Intelligibility., Brian Madden, Eugene Coyle

Conference Papers

During voiced speech, the larynx provides quasi-periodic acoustic excitation of the vocal tract. In most electrolarynxes, mechanical vibrations are produced by a linear electromechanical actuator, the armature of which percusses against a metal or plastic plate at a frequency within the range of glottal excitation. In this paper, a phonological analysis of a section of results from an online perceptual intelligibility test was performed which compared speech produced using a novel hands-free electrolarynx and a commercially available electrolarynx. A portion of the test consisted of a closed-set format containing a selection of four sets of four random CVC audio samples …

Possibility Estimation Of Generating Internal Waves In The Northwest Pacific Ocean Using The Fuzzy Logic Technique, Jia-Xun Li, Ren Ren, Bao-Gang Jin, Hui-Zan Wang Apr 2012

Possibility Estimation Of Generating Internal Waves In The Northwest Pacific Ocean Using The Fuzzy Logic Technique, Jia-Xun Li, Ren Ren, Bao-Gang Jin, Hui-Zan Wang

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

Possibility estimation of generating internal waves has been recognized as a difficult problem because of the complex generation mechanisms and insufficient in situ observation data of internal waves. In this study, a inference model based on the fuzzy logic technique was developed for estimating the generation possibility of internal waves. The marine environmental factors causing the occurrence of internal waves were distilled from ocean data and used as the inputs of the fuzzy inference model, and the generation possibilities of internal waves were used as the output of the model. The developed model was applied to the northwest Pacific, and …

The Fall Of Gondolin And The Fall Of Troy: Tolkien And Book Ii Of The Aeneid, Alexander M. Bruce

Mythlore: A Journal of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Charles Williams, and Mythopoeic Literature

Takes us back to classical warfare and the Fall of Troy with his examination of what Tolkien did with the Aeneid when he used it as a source for “The Fall of Gondolin.” The parallels between the stories of Tuor and Aeneas are striking, but more interesting is how Tolkien put his own thematic and symbolic stamp on the material.

(Un)Covering The Story Of Judeo-Spanish: A Personal Exploration Of Language On The Margins, Lisya Seloni

Harlot: A Revealing Look at the Arts of Persuasion

In this reflective story of my family rhetoric, I describe the use of a small language, Ladino (Judeoespanyol--also known as Jewish-Spanish) in Istanbul, a cosmopolitan city of around 12 million people. I argue that languages and rhetoric used in families are more than a set of linguistic systems that can be readily passed on from one generation to another. In fact, they are a set of cultural symbols, ethnic representations, and ways of acting in the world, which help the family members create safe spaces, build identities and mark group membership. Through narrating the story of the use of Ladino …

Astronomy, Cosmology, And Religious Expression In The New Kingdom: A Study Of Late Ramesside Cosmological Funerary Scenes, Luke W. Breinig Apr 2012

Astronomy, Cosmology, And Religious Expression In The New Kingdom: A Study Of Late Ramesside Cosmological Funerary Scenes, Luke W. Breinig

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Astronomical and cosmological tomb scenes found in New Kingdom tombs consist generally of three parts:scenes depicting the celestial diagram, including the northern constellations, tables listing star or decan names, sometimes known as star clocks or calendars, and cosmological texts which help to explain the religious, philosophical, and funerary significance of these scenes. During the 20th Dynasty, new types of star tables began to appear in conjunction with new cosmological funerary texts and novel ways of showing the celestial diagram. This thesis examines the relationship these scens and the accompanying texts, as well as the underlying religious and philosophical context of …
