Reviving The Surrealist Revolt: A Retracing Of Surrealism’S History And A Reimagining Of Its Future In Translation, Kyle Young May 2012

Reviving The Surrealist Revolt: A Retracing Of Surrealism’S History And A Reimagining Of Its Future In Translation, Kyle Young

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

Although Surrealist writing has literary merit, Surrealist texts were written as revolutionary tracts meant to undermine the social order. Yet the politically radical aspects of the movement are no longer taken very seriously. At least one contributing factor to the current impotence of Surrealism is the approach taken in the translation of Surrealist texts. Many translators have presented Surrealist texts as they would traditionally present any literary document. However, Walter Benjamin’s writings on translation, in particular his essay “The Task of the Translator,” provide a novel conception of translation, one which can produce linguistically radical texts. I will argue that …

A Comparison Of Institutional Climates In Higher Education In The United States And South Africa, Juanyce Deanna Taylor

Dissertations

Increasing opportunities and access of historically underrepresented populations to higher education in both the United States and South Africa have proved challenging due to institutional climates that are perceived as unwelcoming and unsupportive. The purpose of this study was to investigate factors relating to institutional climates to uncover social constructs that positively and negatively impact the institutional environment. Transformational leadership serves as the theoretical framework for this study.

Data results from institutional climate studies administered higher education institutions in the United States and South Africa were analyzed and compared. Collegiality and collaboration; communication; diversity and equity; governance and strategy; harassment …

The paper presents a cultural psychology approach to two themes of Polish culture: Humanism and Social (In)-Effectiveness. The text is divided into three distinct parts: (1) A detailed account of a foreigner's encounter with Poland, where standards typical for this culture are introduced; (2) Historical analysis tracing the origins of these two syndromes in Poland; (3) Empirical comparative studies combined over twenty five years, and their meta-analysis.

African American English And Writing Instruction, Julie Selner May 2012

African American English And Writing Instruction, Julie Selner

Education Masters

This action research study examined the effects of African American English on writing in school and how it attributes to students’ attitudes toward writing. Research was conducted in two fourth grade classrooms during writing instruction. The data was collected through teacher and student questionnaires, observations, and student writing samples. The findings showed that teachers were not explicitly teaching students how to dialect shift between African American English and Standard English; however teachers were sensitive to their students’ needs based on their language variations. In order to ensure that writing instruction is culturally relevant for all students, it is important to …

Students need to have well-developed vocabularies to succeed in language arts as well as in all other content areas. Student success and achievement can be attributed to in part to the difference between the vocabulary knowledge of students who live in poverty and students who do not. This action research project looks at different methods of vocabulary instruction to determine the best practice. This study took place in a fifth grade classroom at a Title One school. The methods of instruction tested were explicit instruction, teaching vocabulary in context, and a combination approach. This study concluded that vocabulary should be …

The Role Of Phonology And Semantics In The Lexical Processing Of Asl Core Lexical Items And Classifier Constructions, Jeannine Kammann May 2012

The Role Of Phonology And Semantics In The Lexical Processing Of Asl Core Lexical Items And Classifier Constructions, Jeannine Kammann

Linguistics ETDs

This MA thesis explores lexical processing in American Sign Language (ASL). Although a model of lexical processing exists for spoken languages, the research on lexical processing, storage, and organization in signed languages is not very extensive and has been focused on the core lexicon. The present study, for the first time, investigates the role of classifier constructions in ASL lexical processing. Classifier constructions form an essential part of the sign language lexicon, but have previously not been the foci of psycholinguistic studies. The present study compares processing of classifier constructions, with that of core lexical items and nonce signs with …

Child Care Center Directors' Perceptions Of Continuity Of Care: A Qualitative Investigation, Desalyn De-Souza May 2012

Child Care Center Directors' Perceptions Of Continuity Of Care: A Qualitative Investigation, Desalyn De-Souza

Child and Family Studies - Dissertations

Continuity of care, keeping a primary caregiver and children together throughout the first three years of the infant/toddler period or for the time that the child is enrolled in child care, is assumed to influence infant and toddler development positively. However, strong empirical support is lacking along with wide variation of implementation among early childhood programs. Employing a qualitative design, this study investigated child care center directors' perceptions of continuity of care as a quality indicator and best practice in early care and education programs. Twenty-one child care center directors were interviewed using a list of open-ended questions gauging knowledge …

Fresh Ears, Fresh Eyes: Final Editing Through Reading Aloud, Sarah Gerwig-Moore May 2012

Fresh Ears, Fresh Eyes: Final Editing Through Reading Aloud, Sarah Gerwig-Moore

Mercer Law Review

I have always found the final editing process to be the most difficult. Each year in my clinic, The Habeas Project, my students and I may file as many as seven or eight court briefs. Belying the name "brief," these documents are not short. And after working on a project for three or six or even nine months, it is common for teachers and students alike to lose momentum and interest in a project along with the ability to find the typo in the haystack.

My clinic students are tired (and sometimes both sick AND tired) from working long weeks …

The Beyonder App: Designing A Website And A Mobile Application For Teachers To Integrate The Torrance Incubation Model Into Classroom Content, Jenna M. Smith May 2012

The Beyonder App: Designing A Website And A Mobile Application For Teachers To Integrate The Torrance Incubation Model Into Classroom Content, Jenna M. Smith

Creativity and Change Leadership Graduate Student Master's Projects

E. Paul Torrance “the father of creativity” was quoted as saying “tomorrow’s world will be vastly different for today’s children. They will do kinds of work that do not exist now. This will require abilities, skills, attitudes and information that we cannot imagine today” (Torrance, 1993, p.159). Today’s world is vastly different, thus requiring creative skills and abilities to achieve success. Students growing up in today’s society are digital natives. This indicates that they do not know a world without technology advances, so technology is fully ingrained in their culture. Yet, today’s educational system has still not adapted to the …

Paths Not Taken: Sartre, Normativity, And Language, Nicholas Carayannis May 2012

Paths Not Taken: Sartre, Normativity, And Language, Nicholas Carayannis

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Sartreanism appears to have hit a number of dead-ends within the philosophical discourse of modernity. Utilizing the tools of Jurgen Habermas's rational reconstruction of the discourse of modernity, this thesis attempts to resuscitate the works of Jean-Paul Sartre to solve the a porias of his subject-centered philosophy. Truth and Existence , a work published between Being and Nothingness and Critique of Dialectical Reason, indicates a path towards a theory of the subject as being linguistically constituted. By placing these works within the philosophical discourse of modernity as envisioned by Habermas, this thesis exposes Sartre's commitment to the problems of modernity …

Syllable Structure, Frequency, Analogy, And Phonetics: Factors In North Kyungsang Korean Accentuation Of Novel Words, Hyun-Ju Kim May 2012

Syllable Structure, Frequency, Analogy, And Phonetics: Factors In North Kyungsang Korean Accentuation Of Novel Words, Hyun-Ju Kim

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

North Kyungsang Korean (NKK) is a pitch accent language in which each word has one of a restricted set of possible tonal patterns, and where the tonal pattern of a given lexical word is not fully predictable. This dissertation reports on a corpus study of accent patterns in existing words and the results of a study in which NKK speakers were asked to produce novel forms. This study demonstrated that when NKK speakers produce novel words, their accent patterns reveal regular tendencies, most notably a tendency for heavy syllables to attract accent. An experiment in which speakers were asked to …

Influences Of Disclosure Among Child Sexual Abuse Victims, Michelle Jones May 2012

Influences Of Disclosure Among Child Sexual Abuse Victims, Michelle Jones

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

Child forensic interviews are essential in eliciting disclosures in child abuse cases. Due to the nature of abuse and the child victims, barriers are inevitable to obtaining a full disclosure. This research describes the barriers as well as the factors that increase the likelihood of eliciting a disclosure during child forensic interviews. Previous research has found that factors more likely to induce a disclosure are having a supportive primary caregiver, an investigation which was instigated by the child victim, and if the victim is an older female. Barriers preventing disclosure include threats made by the perpetrator, fear, lack of opportunity …

Exploration Of The Chemistry Of Alkynes And Selectfluor : Search For Cytotoxic Agents From The Amazonian Rainforest., Zhuang Jin

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Vicinal dithioethers and alkenyl thioethers were synthesized under environmentally friendly conditions using alkyne and thiol in water. Alkynes were also used to develop a multibond-fonning reaction that fonned cyclic ketones or ketoesters through a goldcatalyzed intramolecular oxygen transfer isomerization of 2-alkynyl-l ,5-diketones or 2- alkyny 1-5 -ketoesters. The investigation of Selectfluor chemistry yielded a highly stereoselective synthesis of fluoroalky (E)-a,ß-unsaturated ketones from allenyl esters, through a gold-catalyzed rearrangement that produced an intennediate dienyl ester. When Selectfluor was combined with copper, it produced two oxidative systems, F-TEDA-BF4 and F-TEDAPF 6, both of which efficiently converted amides into imides at room temperature …

Research Into The Utility Of Standards In Foreign Language Instruction: A Case Study Of Methods Used In The High School Setting, Paul S. Kirby

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Given the increased emphasis on language acquisition in public education, and in university, government, and military settings there will be an increased focus on the
language classroom. My goal in this study was to investigate how five foreign language instructors in the Salt Lake metropolitan area perceived and implemented the national standards disseminated by the American Council for the Teachers of Foreign Language (ACTFL) known as the five Cs. These standards have also been adopted by the Utah State Office of Education (USOE). A broadened understanding was achieved through analysis of structured interviews, direct observation of foreign language instructors, evaluation …

“It’S Wraylynn – With A W”: Distinctive Mormon Naming Practices, Jennifer R. Mansfield May 2012

“It’S Wraylynn – With A W”: Distinctive Mormon Naming Practices, Jennifer R. Mansfield

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The primary objective of this study was to investigate ways in which names among members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints are distinctive and the reasons behind those distinctive names. While many before me have noted that Mormons often possess distinctive names, there are few studies that attempt to determine the reasons why. Existing research has neglected to include perspectives from members of the LDS Church who practice distinctive naming. Through interviews with LDS Church members, I analyzed what they hoped to accomplish through naming and the larger cultural themes visible in distinctive LDS names. I also …

Alternative Performances Of Race And Gender In Hip-Hop Music : Nerdcore Counterculture., Jessica Elizabeth Ronald May 2012

Alternative Performances Of Race And Gender In Hip-Hop Music : Nerdcore Counterculture., Jessica Elizabeth Ronald

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In his documentary entitled, Nerdcore For Life, director Dan Lamoureux described Nerdcore as a "powerful social collision between hip hop and geek culture". Born on the Internet, Nerdcore Hip-Hop is rap music made by geeks, for geeks and covers such traditionally "nerdy" topics such as comic books, video games, science fiction, anime, technology, etc. Though it has existed online for almost a decade, only recently has Nerdcore gone from being an Internet fad to an underground cultural phenomenon. This paper investigated how hegemonic constructions of race and gender within both the dominant public sphere and hip-hop culture are subverted and …

A Critical Enquiry Into The Relationship Of Literature In American Public Education And Michel Foucault's Governmentality, Lucille Ann Van Alstine May 2012

A Critical Enquiry Into The Relationship Of Literature In American Public Education And Michel Foucault's Governmentality, Lucille Ann Van Alstine

Dissertations

The purpose of this Critical Enquiry was to describe how literature taught in American public school can be viewed as an instrument of governmentality. The late popular Twentieth century philosopher/historian Michel Foucault viewed governmentality as a perspective of rule within a society, or more accurately, the pervasive thought attached to power of the given ruling structure of a particular historical time period. Foucault’s governmentality provided a framework in which to examine the relationship between citizens' voice as a collective "We, the People" or as "I, the individual." These balancing voices appear in literature taught in American education and parallel the …

Spatiotemporal Coupling Of The Tongue In Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, Mili S. Kuruvilla, Jordan R. Green, Yana Yunusova, Kathy Hanford

Department of Special Education and Communication Disorders: Faculty Publications

Purpose: The primary aim of the investigation was to identify deficits in spatiotemporal coupling between tongue regions in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). The relations between disease-related changes in tongue movement patterns and speech intelligibility were also determined.

Methods: The authors recorded word productions from 11 individuals with ALS with mild, moderate, and severe dysarthria using an x-ray microbeam during word productions. A coupling index based on sliding window covariance was used to determine disease-related changes in the coupling between the tongue regions across each word.

Results: The results indicated decreased spatiotemporal coupling of mid-posterior tongue regions and reduced tongue speed …

Thoughts On Legal Education, The Curriculum, And The Importance Of Process Over Substance, John O. Cole May 2012

Thoughts On Legal Education, The Curriculum, And The Importance Of Process Over Substance, John O. Cole

Mercer Law Review

Curricular reform conversations are valuable as a process of continually thinking about, and discussing, the form that a "proper" legal education should take. The key concepts here are "conversations" and "process," for I would immediately suggest that the "substance" of whatever curricular reform that is created at the back end of this conversational process is itself of little importance or interest. That is to say, in the grand scheme of ideas concerning legal education, the specific ordering of courses and the particular list of required courses are of relatively minor importance in the development of a healthy curriculum.

I offer …
