Culture And Context: Upstream Determinants Of Cervical Cancer Among Haitian Immigrants Living In Miami, Florida, Jonathan K. Kish
Culture And Context: Upstream Determinants Of Cervical Cancer Among Haitian Immigrants Living In Miami, Florida, Jonathan K. Kish
Open Access Dissertations
In 2011 over 500,000 women will be diagnosed with cervical cancer worldwide and approximately 250,000 will die of the disease. The majority of incident cases will occur among women who lack routine access to Papalanicolou (Pap) test screening. While access-related factors, such as income and health insurance status, are primary drivers of screening utilization research suggests that a number of individual and contextual social and cultural factors, such as low cervical cancer knowledge, lower educational attainment and non-Western health beliefs can exert an independent or multiplicative effect. Among the immigrant Haitian population of Miami, Florida the incidence of cervical cancer …

Frequency And Associated Factors For Anxiety And Depression In Pregnant Women: A Hospital-Based Cross-Sectional Study., Niloufer Sultan Ali, Iqbal Azam Syed, Badar S. Ali, Ghurnata Tabbusum, Sana S. Moin
Department of Family Medicine
Antepartum anxiety and/or depression is a major public health problem globally. The aim of this study was to estimate the frequency of antepartum anxiety and/or depression among pregnant women. This was a cross-sectional study conducted in a tertiary care hospital among pregnant women. A total of 165 pregnant women were interviewed by a clinical psychologist using HADS for assessing anxiety and/or depression and also collected information regarding sociodemographic, obstetric, family relationships, and home environment. Out of the total of 165 pregnant women about 70 percent of them were either anxious and/or depressed. The increasing age of women (P-value = 0.073), …

Mexican American Adolescents’ Perceptions Of Dating Violence Programs: Recommendations For Effective Program Design And Implementation, Lela Rankin Williams, Heidi Adams Rueda, Bianca N. Altamirano
Social Work Faculty Publications
Although promising dating violence programs have emerged, little is known about their effectiveness for Mexican American youth, a vulnerable and understudied population. The purpose of this study was: (1) to offer culturally-grounded recommendations towards the development of effective Teen Dating Violence (TDV) programs and/or the modification of existing programs, and (2) to identify potential barriers to Mexican American youth’s participation in TDV programs. Using the perspectives of Mexican American youth (15 to 17 years old) and a phenomenological study design, focus groups (N = 14) were conducted that were homogeneous by gender and level of acculturation (low/bicultural/high). Youth provided …

Albert H. Kritzer, The 1980 Un Convention (Cisg), And The Vis Moot: An Inseparable Relationship, Luiz Gustavo Meira Moser
Pace International Law Review
Albert H. Kritzer left the international legal community on June 1, 2010, having passed on an immense legacy as a result of successful projects well ahead of his time: the work of a man fortunate enough to ally wisdom and courage with the joy of living. Professor Kritzer was one of the creators of the Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot, the biggest competition of international arbitration in the world, held annually in Vienna, Austria.
Hunting A Dictator As A Transnational Legal Process: The Internalization Problem And The Hissène Habré Case, Caleb J. Stevens
Hunting A Dictator As A Transnational Legal Process: The Internalization Problem And The Hissène Habré Case, Caleb J. Stevens
Pace International Law Review
Transnational legal process theory suffers from an internalization problem: it does not adequately explain why international legal norms are internalized. This article addresses the gap by analyzing the Habré case in Senegal as an example of transnational legal process. Utilizing speech act and securitization theories, I argue that internalization can be partly explained by three factors of agency: (1) the validity of the claim, (2) linguistic competence, and (3) discursive strategies. Positing that the claim in the Habré case is sufficiently valid per se, I find multiple actors commanding linguistic competence and employing a variety of discursive strategies. I conclude …

Human Pelvis And Long Bones Reveal Differential Preservation Of Ancient Population History And Migration Out Of Africa, Lia Betti, Noreen Von Cramon-Taubadel, Stephen J. Lycett
Human Biology
One of the main events in the history of our species has been our expansion out of Africa. A clear signature of this expansion has been found on global patterns of neutral genetic variation, whereby a serial founder effect accompanied the colonization of new regions, in turn creating a within-population decrease in neutral genetic diversity with increasing distance from Africa. This same distinctive pattern has also been described for cranial and dental morphological variation in human populations distributed across the globe. Here, we used a data set of postcranial linear measurements for 30 globally distributed human populations, and a climatic …

"Ye Ken Fine Wha I Mean": Variation Between You Know And Ye Ken In Scottish Varieties Of English, Briony Jones
"Ye Ken Fine Wha I Mean": Variation Between You Know And Ye Ken In Scottish Varieties Of English, Briony Jones
Linguistics ETDs
The discourse marker you know is one of the most frequently studied discourse markers, and bears the hallmarks of a typical discourse marker with its complexity and indeterminacy of function (e.g. Holmes 1986, Erman 1987, Fox Tree & Schrock 2002, Irwin 2006). Much less work has been conducted into the uses of regional varieties of you know, specifically the use of Scots ye ken, partly as a consequence of a lack of data to study (Bauer 2004), and partly due to an assumption that there is little of interest to study in language varieties of Scotland (Murdoch, 1996). In this …

Effective Comprehension Strategies After Initial Reading Of Fiction And Nonfiction Texts, Sarah Martin
Effective Comprehension Strategies After Initial Reading Of Fiction And Nonfiction Texts, Sarah Martin
Education Masters
Given that responsible students actively engage in their own literacy learning by developing personal literacy goals and that learning occurs when effective reading strategies are taught, this action research project asks, which after reading strategies work best with fiction and nonfiction texts in developing comprehension in fifth graders? Research for this study takes place at Middlebrook Elementary School. Three fifth grade students participated in several reading and assessment tasks over the course of seven work sessions. The findings and implications suggest that inferring is most useful when reading fiction, summarizing proved to be an effective for both genres. Lastly, results …

Boys And Writing: A Look Into Attitudes And Perceptions, Alyssa Scott
Education Masters
The purpose of this study was to determine the factors that influence boys’ negative perception of writing then analyze how that perception affects the quality of their work. The study consisted of nine male participants who were identified by their classroom teachers. Data was collected over three meetings with teachers and students as anecdotal notes, observations, writing samples, and surveys were conducted. The results indicate that male students perceive writing to be a negative thing due to the stagnant nature of the process, lack of interest in school based topics, and negative perception of self as a writer. All of …

The Importance Of Background Information When Reading Informational Text In The Primary Classroom, Carly Smith
Education Masters
The goal of this study was to examine the impact background knowledge has on the reading and comprehension of informational text. I believe that background knowledge on the content and genre related to informational text is essential in order to comprehend this genre of text. This study examines how kindergarten students interacted with informational text and the impact background knowledge had on their understanding of informational text. Data was collected through assessments, field notes, and surveys. This study found that kindergarten students are not only capable of learning from informational text, but that they also enjoy reading this genre. It …

"Roadblocks, Stop Signs": Health Literacy, Education And Communication At A Free Medical Clinic, Sally Jane Huntington
Teaching and Leadership - Dissertations
This qualitative study, which takes place in a free medical clinic for low-income and uninsured patients, addresses the patients' health literacy and access to health information inside and outside of the clinic setting, as well as the strategies clinic providers use to effectively communicate health information. This study is based on participant observation in an urban clinic in the Northeast, interviews of 22 patients and 20 health-care providers, and direct observation of the patient/provider communication in nine instances. In the clinic, the providers serve as educators for vulnerable, stressed patients, who are adult learners. The patients were interviewed in order …

"Women With No One": Community And Christianity In A Secular South Indian Homeless Shelter, Connie Etter
Anthropology - Dissertations
This dissertation examines daily life and social service practices in a secular homeless shelter for women in Tamil Nadu, south India. The residents of the shelter have diverse backgrounds but local staff members and volunteers describe them collectively as "women with no one": unwed mothers, orphans, widows, women abandoned or abused by husbands and lovers, former sex workers, prisoners' wives, and women deemed mentally or physically unfit for marriage. Daily negotiations of belonging take place among this transient and diverse group of marginalized women and equally diverse and transnational care providers. The closed shelter campus provides an opportunity to query …

"Images Of Polish Jewish Literature", Book Review Of Hava Bromberg Ben-Zvi, 'Portraits In Literature: The Jews Of Poland: An Anthology', Justine Pas
Faculty Scholarship
Excerpt:
"In her introduction to Portraits in Literature: The Jews of Poland, Hava Bromberg Ben-Zvi writes that “Jewish literature and culture did not perish from the face of the earth. Inherited and transformed by a new generation of writers, it was reborn, changed and enriched, finding new configurations, images and expressions” (p. xxxv). This sense of homage to a literature and culture of Polish Jews permeates the entire anthology, beginning with Bromberg Ben-Zvi’s essay on the historical context of Jewish life in Poland and ending with selections from writers like Anna Cwiakowska, who continues to write and publish in …

Parental Perspectives On Young Adults With Down Syndrome And Online Social Networking Sites, Kimberly Fiser
Rehabilitation, Human Resources and Communication Disorders Undergraduate Honors Theses
The purpose of this study was to determine parental perspectives on the use of online social networking sites by young adults with Down syndrome (DS), specifically how they rate their adult child’s (AC) communicative success, how they view the social implications surrounding social network use, and what value they think social networking has in AC’s day-to-day life. Parents of young adults with DS and access to an online social network were sought to complete a 3 part, online questionnaire. Three parents responded to the questionnaire, and responses given determined that parents consider their AC to be able to communicate via …

An Investigation Of Racial And/Or Ethnic Minority Teacher Candidates' Strengths Awareness And Utilization, Hui Chen
Teaching and Leadership - Dissertations
There is a consensus among researchers that teachers from diverse linguistic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds contribute to American education (Dee, 2004; Easton-Brooks, Lewis, & Yang, 2010; Irvine, 2003; Irvine & Fenwick, 2011; Ladson-Billings, 2005; Lu, 2005; Talbert-Johnson, 2001). There is also a call for teacher educators to recognize what racial and/or ethnic minority teacher candidates bring to the teaching profession (Galindo & Olguin, 1996; Kohli, 2009; Lu, 2005; Montecinos, 2004; Oling Ottoo, 2005). Yet our knowledge about how this unique group of prospective teachers interprets and works with their own strengths is very limited. It is necessary to explore the …
