Road Scholar (RS) is the name for the programs developed and offered by Elderhostel, Inc., the not-for-profit leader in lifelong learning since 1975. RS inspires adults to learn, discover and travel (Road Scholar, 2012). Currently, RS is in the process of launching five new service-learning programs over the next two years. Road Scholar runs five different programs yearly to India; of the current programs offered there is no service-learning component throughout any of the programs. The specific location in India was chosen due to the need for an additional English teacher at the public school. There are a growing number …

The Linguistic Refashioning Of An Internal Exile: Duoduo And His Pre-Exile Poetics, Chee Lay Tan May 2012

The Linguistic Refashioning Of An Internal Exile: Duoduo And His Pre-Exile Poetics, Chee Lay Tan

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

This paper investigates Chinese Misty poet Duoduo's early pre-exile poems. As Duoduo uses punctuation abundantly in an orderly structure and dates his poems, his works projects themselves as being more transparent than obscure or misty. Even Duoduo himself denied writing Misty poetry, although most critics classified his works as "Misty" and described them as "weird" and "difficult". This paper will examine such confusion by focusing on Duoduo's pre-exile linguistic refashioning via musicality and juxtaposition of unrelated images, which I regard as his main constituent of Mistiness.

Of these, three are current principals and three have been principals their entire careers and are now retired. The main research question is; what value do principals in Wake County, North Carolina place on global competence of teacher job applicants? The findings answer …

Levels Of Altruism, Martin Zwick, Jeffrey Alan Fletcher May 2012

Levels Of Altruism, Martin Zwick, Jeffrey Alan Fletcher

Systems Science Friday Noon Seminar Series

The phenomenon of altruism extends from the biological realm to the human sociocultural realm. This paper sketches a coherent outline of multiple types of altruism of progressively increasing scope that span these two realms and are grounded in an ever-expanding sense of “self.” Discussion of this framework notes difficulties associated with altruisms at different levels. It links scientific ideas about the evolution of cooperation and about hierarchical order to perennial philosophical and religious concerns. It offers a conceptual background for inquiry into societal challenges that call for altruistic behavior, especially the challenge of environmental and social sustainability.

Predictors Of Latino Mothers' Involvement In Their Children's Education, Liza Maria Arango May 2012

Predictors Of Latino Mothers' Involvement In Their Children's Education, Liza Maria Arango

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Parental involvement has a major influence on students' academic and overall success; however, Latino parents tend to be less involved than non-Latino parents. Additionally, Latino students have higher dropout rates than other ethnic groups, and their continued underachievement is of great concern to many educators. The purpose of this study is to better understand Latino mothers' involvement and identify the precursor factors that may influence these mothers' involvement in their children's education. Specifically, the study investigated specific family factors that may potentially impact Latino mothers' involvement at school and at home (i.e., mothers' number of years residing in the U.S., …

Piers Plowman, Legal Authority And The Law Of Subject Status., Victoria Thomas May 2012

Piers Plowman, Legal Authority And The Law Of Subject Status., Victoria Thomas

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

This project examines the legal discourses surrounding Langland's Piers Plowman to show that the language of the law courts, and the dilemmas faced there on a daily basis about the authority of the law, are mirrored in the way in which Langland presents Christ's harrowing of hell at one of the narrative climaxes of the poem. The state of English law inflects the literature, even when the issue presented appears to be covenantal theology, because the questions over the basis of legal authority being asked in the courtroom were so enmeshed in the language of the courtroom being used in …

Mediating War In Early Modern German Prose, Patrick Brugh May 2012

Mediating War In Early Modern German Prose, Patrick Brugh

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

Gunpowder technology had been in Europe since the fourteenth century, but it took two hundred years before German authors were aware of its social and aesthetic implications. When early modern people discussed gunpowder warfare in texts of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries they were astonished by its ability to destroy people, places, and things, as well as an aesthetic of warfare upon which war stories had long been based: heroics. While modern historians still debate the quantitative impact of gunpowder technology on society, early modern authors and eyewitnesses were in unanimous agreement: Gunpowder changed the way they thought about war. …

Global Poverty - Local Problem: Institutional Determinants Of Poverty Among Indigenous Peoples Of Nepal, Gyanesh Lama

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

This dissertation investigated why some groups or communities become poor while others become rich. Using institutional design as a theoretical guidance, the study conducted an in-depth analysis of the socioeconomic disparities between indigenous peoples and caste people in Nepal. The study used multilevel modeling, Geographic Information System: GIS), and ethnography research methods. Indigenous peoples in Nepal were found to be significantly at higher risk of poverty than caste people. Discrimination against indigenous peoples appears to be the key determinant of indigenous poverty. Geographic isolation and proximity to caste people were also significant predictors of indigenous poverty. The study has implication …

Culture Counts: Culture, Language & Mathematics In The U.S., Arielle L. Ramberg May 2012

Culture Counts: Culture, Language & Mathematics In The U.S., Arielle L. Ramberg

Senior Theses

This study explores the interaction between culture, language, and mathematics through the experiences of multicultural individuals in the United States as they learn mathematics in English as a second language. Regarding mathematics as a fundamental a-cultural truth hides the role that cultures have played in its construction. This study critically examines this perspective through the contradicting experiences of multicultural individuals shared in qualitative interviews. I focus on the power relations implicit in not only the Standard English of the classroom, but also the standard forms of mathematics that students must learn to succeed, and the effects that this power has …

Being Critical In Marketing Studies: The Imperative Of Macro Perspectives, Nikhilesh Dholakia May 2012

Being Critical In Marketing Studies: The Imperative Of Macro Perspectives, Nikhilesh Dholakia

College of Business Faculty Publications

In this article, I argue that an elevated macro-level perspective is imperative for conducting critical studies in the fields of marketing and consumer research. There are epistemic barriers to operating in this manner, and I offer several suggestions for overcoming these barriers. Finally, I review the research spaces for critical studies of marketing in various global settings and conclude that United Kingdom and Nordic Europe have the best epistemic climate, and this region needs to take leadership in promoting greater range of macro and critical studies of marketing in the rest of the world.

Issues In Designing A Corpus Of Spoken Irish, Elaine Ui Dhonnchadha, Alessio Frenda, Brian Vaughan

Conference papers

This paper describes the stages involved in implementing a corpus of spoken Irish. This pilot project (consisting of approximately 140K of transcribed data) implements parts of the design of a larger corpus of spoken Irish which it is hoped will contain approximately 2 million words when complete. It hoped that such a corpus will provide material for linguistic research, lexicography, the teaching of Irish and for development of language technology for the Irish language.

Speech & Multimodal Resources: The Herme Database Of Spontaneous Multimodal Human-Robot Dialogues, Jing Guang Hang, Emer Gilmartin, Celine De Looze, Brian Vaughan, Nick Campbell

Conference papers

This paper presents methodologies and tools for language resource (LR) construction. It describes a database of interactive speech collected over a three-month period at the Science Gallery in Dublin, where visitors could take part in a conversation with a robot. The system collected samples of informal, chatty dialogue – normally difficult to capture under laboratory conditions for human-human dialogue, and particularly so for human-machine interaction. The conversations were based on a script followed by the robot consisting largely of social chat with some task-based elements. The interactions were audio-visually recorded using several cameras together with microphones. As part of the …

Interactions Between Cognition And Hearing Aid Compression Release Time: Effects Of Linguistic Context Of Speech Test Materials On Speech-In-Noise Performance, Jingjing Xu May 2012

Interactions Between Cognition And Hearing Aid Compression Release Time: Effects Of Linguistic Context Of Speech Test Materials On Speech-In-Noise Performance, Jingjing Xu

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Difference in speech recognition performance with short and long release time processing has been noted in previous research. Recent research has established a connection between hearing aid users' cognitive abilities and release time. Researchers hope to use cognitive ability as a predictor of release time selection. The results from these previous studies have been contradictory. Some researchers hypothesized that linguistic context of speech recognition test materials was one of the factors that accounted for the inconsistency. The goal of the present study was to examine the relationship between hearing aid users' cognitive abilities and their aided speech recognition performance with …
