Using Explicit Strategy Instruction To Improve Reading Comprehension, Abigail K. Ballou Aug 2012

Using Explicit Strategy Instruction To Improve Reading Comprehension, Abigail K. Ballou

Education Masters

For the purpose of this study, three students were explicitly taught three during reading comprehension strategies. Students were given a pre and post-assessment which were analyzed to determine the effectiveness and implications of explicit strategy instruction. Furthermore, a questionnaire, related to reading comprehension, was distributed to teachers at the school in which the study took place. Findings from the study suggest that although students’ comprehension scores did not improve, their attitudes toward reading improved and their ability to use a wide variety of strategies increased after receiving explicit strategy instruction. The primary implication of this study is teachers must be …

How Does Exposure To Mulitcultural Literature Benefit Children's Thought Processes About Race?, Timothy Coon

Education Masters

This action research paper asked the question, “How does exposure to multicultural literature benefit children’s thought processes about race?” The students’ exposure to multicultural literature showed mixed results based on their thought processes about race. Data was collected through teacher field notes, interviews, questionnaires, student work samples, and study questions. The findings section presents tables with the data that was collected. The data showed three recurring themes during the study: consistent prejudice toward African Americans, multicultural literature’s effect on children’s thoughts, and developing empathy while making personal connections to other cultures. The results from the tables indicated that it is …

Culturally Responsive Multicultural Education, Mayra Ortiz Aug 2012

Culturally Responsive Multicultural Education, Mayra Ortiz

Education Masters

This paper identifies the many facets and importance of a multicultural/culturally responsive education. While a multicultural education affirms issues of identity and differences among people as a positive thing, it also uses this same lens to question and confront both historical and current issues of power and privilege in society. Today multicultural education strives to instruct teachers as to the ways in which culturally and linguistically diverse students learn and function in order for them to receive and experience the most diverse and culturally rich learning possible. Based in recognizing and accepting cultural differences, culturally responsive education is a pedagogy …

Swimming And Water Safety: Reaching All Children In Australian Primary Schools., Tj Lynch Aug 2012

Swimming And Water Safety: Reaching All Children In Australian Primary Schools., Tj Lynch

Plymouth Institute of Education

Data gathered indicate that reductions in annual Australian drowning fatalities for not only children, but people of all ages, have hit a plateau, and if anything, figures suggest that fatal drownings in recent years are on the increase. It is alarm- ing that figures are not falling despite the many well-developed swimming and water safety education programs available. The number of drowning deaths in Australia is regarded by governing bodies as far too many, hence it is proposed that the necessary changes required to further reduce drowning may involve teachers within primary schools being used more efficiently in the educational …

Social Networks, L2 Pragmatics, And Spanish Hasta As An Aspectual Marker With And Without Negation: Student Understandings, Judgments, And Uses, Mikela Zhezha-Thaumanavar

Dissertations

This dissertation investigates how social networks influence understandings, judgments, and uses of L2 pragmatics. The pragmatic target is the particle hasta ‘until’ as it is used orally and in writing to mark inception with and without negation in Spanish. This study examines how L2 students of Spanish understand, judge, and use hasta when they are members of social networks in university Spanish classes based on (a) pedagogy practice, (b) class level, and (c) mode of expression, and when, outside of university Spanish classes, they are integrated into social networks that involve exposure to different dialectal varieties of Spanish.

Data were …

The network of healthcare facilities in Mozambique is made up of facilities that are old and do not meet the current healthcare needs of the country. Many facilities have already existed well beyond their useful life of, with approximately 50 to 75 years, and continue to operate without considerable maintenance. The access to care is very low. According to the Ministry of Health, the ratio of population at the primary level of care delivery (health centers) is an average of 17,000 people per each healthcare unit and for the secondary level (district and rural hospitals) is 501,000 people per each …

Algorithms And Interfaces For Automated Non-Visual Skimming, Faisal Ahmed Aug 2012

Algorithms And Interfaces For Automated Non-Visual Skimming, Faisal Ahmed

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

In our information-driven web-based society, we are all gradually falling victims to information overload [9]. However, while sighted people are finding ways to sift through information faster, computer users who are blind are experiencing an even greater information overload. These users access computers and Internet using screen-reader software, which reads the information on a computer screen sequentially using computer-generated speech through an audio interface and allows users to navigate using keyboard shortcuts or gestures. This interface does not give them an opportunity to know what content to skip and what to listen to. So, they either listen to all of …

Principal Components Ancestry Adjustment, Jing Jin Aug 2012

Principal Components Ancestry Adjustment, Jing Jin

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

A genome wide association study may have spurious or misleading results due to population stratification. This research evaluated the properties of global principal components and local principal components to adjust for population stratification. Principal components were calculated using both common variants (with minor allele frequency greater than 0.05) and rare variants (with minor allele frequency between 0.0005 and 0.05). One genetic model considered was from the Genetic Analysis Workshop 17 (GAW17). Additional genetic models developed in these analyses used the genotypes in the International Hapmap data. Phenotypes were simulated using these genotypes. Both type I error rates and powers of …

An Exploration Of African Folktales Among The Gullah Community Of The South Carolina Sea Islands : History, Culture, And Identity., Tytianna Nikia Maria Wells Smith 1987-

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis is an exploration of Black cultural space and its influence on the retention, adaptation, and transmission of African folktales during and after the antebellum era. During slavery, the survival of kinship and family helped to create an environment that existed through which African folktales were used to educate and socialize children on South Carolina Sea Islands plantations. This research conducted a literary and cultural analysis of the historical and current function of ten folktales that impart moral lessons and cultural values that encourage children in Gullah communities to appreciate their African heritage and challenge the world in which …

Narrative Of Modern Chinese Masculinity In Ha Jin's Fiction., Lezhou Su Aug 2012

Narrative Of Modern Chinese Masculinity In Ha Jin's Fiction., Lezhou Su

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation consists of readings of three selected novels by Ha Jin-Waiting, The Crazed, and A Free Life. These novels cover three historical periods of Contemporary China under the rule of the Communist Party in sequence-the Mao's era (1949-1976), post-Mao era (1976-1989) and post-Tiananmen Square Incident era (1989 onwards). The readings are predominated with gender issues in the literary works, particularly with the construction and representation of contemporary Chinese masculinity. Drawing mainly on the Kam Louie's theory which pins down traditional Chinese masculinity in terms of wen (literary power) and wu (physical power)-the two concepts deeply entrenched in Confucianism, the …

Diachrony In Synchrony: Korean Vowel Harmony In Verbal Conjugation, Hijo Kang Aug 2012

Diachrony In Synchrony: Korean Vowel Harmony In Verbal Conjugation, Hijo Kang

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

This dissertation deals with a pattern of variation which results from a historical change in progress in Korean. In an earlier stage of the language, there was a consistent process of vowel harmony which resulted in alternations between [a] and [ʌ] in verbal suffixes. In present day Korean, however, the use of suffix forms containing [ʌ] is often generalized to contexts that originally took [a]. I present results from a Google-driven corpus study, a judgment survey, a production experiment, and a spontaneous speech study showing that the likelihood of a disharmonic form is affected by three factors: the morphophonological class …

Gothic Elements And Racial Stereotypes In The Construction Of The Passing Character, Kimberly Divonne Smith

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Gothic Elements and Racial Stereotypes In the Construction Of The Passing Character By Kimberly Divonne Smith Doctor of Philosophy In English Stony Brook University 2012 My dissertation analyzes the construction of the passing character in the American literary tradition as s/he is depicted by both black and white authors through their use of gothic elements, in ways that challenged or substantiated racial stereotypes (or sometimes both). Furthermore, this study demonstrates how the passing figure reflects the enduringly haunting racial landscapes of America. Specifically, this comparative study critiques the works of Mark Twain, Charles Chesnutt, Nella Larsen, Danzy Senna, and William …

Negotiating Conflicting Rhetorics: Rancheras And Documentary In The Classroom, Dora Ramirez-Dhoore Aug 2012

Negotiating Conflicting Rhetorics: Rancheras And Documentary In The Classroom, Dora Ramirez-Dhoore

English Literature Faculty Publications and Presentations

As a young teenager, I remember sitting in the back seat of my parent's car, rolling my eyes at the noise coming from the radio speakers. On the airwaves being sent directly from Texas and Florida and behind the overbearing static sound, I could make out the TAN, TAN of the ending of the rancherai song my father was singing and enjoying. My mother would be next to him singing and whistling along, ignoring the static sound that was louder than the music and that would invariably give my teenage self a headache.ii My sister and I, two …

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

The aim of this research was to examine Turkish pre-service teachers` knowledge and perceived self-efficacy beliefs toward using expository text as an instructional tool in their future classroom settings. The research sample were 346 pre-service teachers who studied in different teacher preparation programs which included elementary classroom and middle content classrooms (for example, science, social studies and Turkish language arts) teaching professions. A teacher efficacy inventory and a knowledge test about using expository text were developed and administered to the pre-service teachers in a public university in Turkey. The research findings showed that there was a small but positive correlation …

Realistic Cultural Threat And Opposition To Immigration In The U.S., Ben Jordan Newman Aug 2012

Realistic Cultural Threat And Opposition To Immigration In The U.S., Ben Jordan Newman

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

My dissertation explores the realistic dimensions of the cultural threats posed by immigrants and their impacts upon Americans' immigration policy preferences. Cultural threat, at present, is an under-theorized concept within the opinion research on immigration. The existing literature conceptualizes the cultural threats posed by immigrants largely in terms of social identity and symbolic politics theories, where immigrants are cast as posing a collective level threat to the American identity and its related symbols. What remains largely under-developed is a theoretical and empirical exploration of the more tangible and realistically rooted cultural threats posed by immigrants to individual native born citizens. …

Meeting English Language Learners’ Academic Needs Through Teacher Training: A Multicultural Approach, Marjorie Ninoska Gomez Talavera Aug 2012

Meeting English Language Learners’ Academic Needs Through Teacher Training: A Multicultural Approach, Marjorie Ninoska Gomez Talavera

Masters Theses

Research has revealed that educators are often ill-prepared to teach culturally and linguistically diverse learners. Research suggests that in order to meet the challenges of working with diverse learners, development of multicultural education must include the promotion of sensitivity towards different aspects of diversity. This study explores K-8 teachers´ knowledge and understanding of their students´ learning needs, specific to language and culture, and teachers´ perception of preparedness to effectively deliver instruction to learners of diverse linguistic and cultural background. In this study, the researcher has hypothesized that teachers are ill-prepared to teach linguistically and culturally diverse learners. The study consists …

Motivation In Foreign Language Learning Settings: The Case Of Arabic In The Usa, Abdelmohssen Bouteldjoune Aug 2012

Motivation In Foreign Language Learning Settings: The Case Of Arabic In The Usa, Abdelmohssen Bouteldjoune

Theses

The term motivation has been the key for several research studies in language learning since Gardner and Lambert (1972) introduced the term to the field; however, the term did not go beyond the two types instrumental and integrative. Several studies were built over these terms, but none of them has explicitly investigated the motivation for learning Arabic language as a foreign language in the USA. Arabic is one of the languages where motivation for learning in the USA is increasing, thus came this study to investigate the reasons and orientations i.e. initial motivation for learning Arabic and if the materials …

The Impact Of Background Knowledge And Time Constraint On Reading Comprehension Of Vietnamese Learners Of English As A Second Language, Trang Thi Thuy Nguyen Aug 2012

The Impact Of Background Knowledge And Time Constraint On Reading Comprehension Of Vietnamese Learners Of English As A Second Language, Trang Thi Thuy Nguyen

Theses

Reading in a second language is an interesting area of research because the factors affecting reading have brought about much controversy in related theory and research. Particularly, schema theory has raised long-term debate about whether background knowledge facilitates or impedes reading comprehension. In recognition of such issue, the current research was conducted to examine the impact of background knowledge on second language reading comprehension. Additionally, the impact of time constraint on reading comprehension was also investigated. Thirty-one students of intermediate level of English in Le Quy Don high school, Vietnam took part in the study. Four cloze texts, two of …

Genetic Characteristics Of An Ancient Nomadic Group In Northern China, Haijing Wang, Lu Chen, Binwen Ge, Ye Zhang, Hong Zhu, Hui Zhou

Human Biology Open Access Pre-Prints

Nomadic populations have played a significant role in the history of not only China but also in many nations worldwide. Because they had no written language, an important aspect in the study of these people is the discovery of their tombs. It has been generally accepted that Xiongnu was the first empire created by nomadic tribe in the 3rd century B.C. However, little population genetic information is available concerning the Donghu, another flourishing nomadic tribe at the same period because of the restriction of materials until Jinggouzi site was excavated. In order to test the genetic characteristics of ancient people …

Classification Of Genomic Sequences By Latent Semantic Analysis, Samuel F. Way Aug 2012

Classification Of Genomic Sequences By Latent Semantic Analysis, Samuel F. Way

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Evolutionary distance measures provide a means of identifying and organizing related organisms by comparing their genomic sequences. As such, techniques that quantify the level of similarity between DNA sequences are essential in our efforts to decipher the genetic code in which they are written.

Traditional methods for estimating the evolutionary distance separating two genomic sequences often require that the sequences first be aligned before they are compared. Unfortunately, this preliminary step imposes great computational burden, making this class of techniques impractical for applications involving a large number of sequences. Instead, we desire new methods for differentiating genomic sequences that eliminate …

Centering English Language Learners In The Praxis Of Dialogic Pedagogy, Ching-Ching Lin Aug 2012

Centering English Language Learners In The Praxis Of Dialogic Pedagogy, Ching-Ching Lin

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

The mainstream classroom poses critical challenges to ELL students in the era of standardization. As English is used both as a language of instruction and assessment for all content subjects in the mainstream classroom, ELL students have to master a cognitively loaded and culturally specific curriculum while learning basic English. Through the standardization of curriculum and assessment, English exerts a normalizing power for ELL students. Given the role of language in regulating consciousness and controlling access to dialogic process, how does dialogic pedagogy theorize about the relationships between language, power and the needs of ELL students in mainstream, content-area classrooms? …
