The Dome Of The Rock: The Historical, Political And Religious Motivations Behind Its Construction., Greg Clark 1962- May 2012

The Dome Of The Rock: The Historical, Political And Religious Motivations Behind Its Construction., Greg Clark 1962-

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis provides a hypothesis as to why the Dome of the Rock was built. I examine various scholarly theories concerning the construction of the first notable work of Islamic architecture, which was built in Jerusalem during the last decade of the 7th century CE. I argue that historic events and individuals, beginning in pre-Islamic Arabia and running through the establishment of the Umayyad caliphate at Damascus, acted as catalysts for the building's creation. It is my thesis that the construction of the Dome of the Rock was a potent weapon in the war of propaganda between rival Islamic factions, …

Hidden Voices Of Hermaphrodites, Zohra Asif Jetha, Nasreen Sulaiman Lalani, Gulnar Akber Ali May 2012

Hidden Voices Of Hermaphrodites, Zohra Asif Jetha, Nasreen Sulaiman Lalani, Gulnar Akber Ali

School of Nursing & Midwifery

Gender is a psychological component which is given by the society to a person, while sex is a biological component which is awarded by the God. However, there are certain conditions in which the biological aspects are put to challenge with the social and psychological aspects of gender. Hermaphrodites are a third gender role, who is neither male or female man nor woman but contains the element of both. One may question that if they are neither male nor female then who they are and whether they are equally treated in our society. Looking at the challenges faced by hermaphrodites, …

The Best Of Stories: Yusuf As Joseph In Hebrew Translations Of The Qur'an, Eve Woogen May 2012

The Best Of Stories: Yusuf As Joseph In Hebrew Translations Of The Qur'an, Eve Woogen

Classical Mediterranean and Middle East Honors Projects

The Qur'an, the sacred book of Islam, has been translated from Arabic into Hebrew four times. These works are influenced not only by the usual concerns of cross-cultural translation, particularly the translation of sacred texts, but also by the dynamic between Islam and Judaism. This dynamic is especially apparent in the case of narratives present in both the Qur'an and the Hebrew Bible, such as the story of Yusuf. By examining this story as it appears in these Hebrew translations of the Qur'an, I demonstrate how all four translators acknowledge and incorporate information from the parallel Biblical narrative of Joseph.

Negotiating Islam With Cinema; A Theoretical Discussion On Indonesian Islamic Films, Ahmad Nuril Huda

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

This paper aims at exploring certain negotiations that justify Muslim's cinematic texts and practices. It focuses on the questions about what is Islamic and un-Islamic about film, who and what decides certain films as Islamic, and what are the meanings of cinematic practices of Islam for Muslim society. Furthermore, this paper tries to investigate these questions from a theoretical basis using concepts of Islamic modernity, Islamic Ummah and Public, in order to shed some light on the idea of how a production of an Islamic film may trigger the creation of a political and religious identity.

American Jihad: Understanding The Social Backlash Against Muslim Americans Through The Context Of Ethnotheatre, Sameehan Patel Apr 2012

American Jihad: Understanding The Social Backlash Against Muslim Americans Through The Context Of Ethnotheatre, Sameehan Patel

Honors Projects

I am a brown person. The color of my skin dictates much of how American society has and will interact with me. Whether it is to my advantage or my disadvantage, the cultural fabric of America will isolate who I am because of the color that I am. American culture has racial assumptions embedded within its grain, lending to the alienation and eventual discrimination of certain races. The idea of a marginalized race is no foreign concept in the Anglo American hegemony, but the ever morphing idea of the “other” is my point of inquiry. On September 11th 2001, …

Islamization As Part Of Globalization: Some Southeast Asian Examples, Ron Lukens-Bull, Amanda Pandich, John P. Woods Apr 2012

Islamization As Part Of Globalization: Some Southeast Asian Examples, Ron Lukens-Bull, Amanda Pandich, John P. Woods

Journal of International and Global Studies

In both popular and academic imagination, Islamization and globalization are the opposing processes, representing ”the clash of civilizations” (Huntington, 1993,1996). In Southeast Asia, specifically, globalization is imagined as something distinctly Western and, hence, inherently at odds with Islam, while Islam, meanwhile, is seen as the natural enemy of globalization. This paper instead sees Muslims as active participants in globalization. Further, it explores the concept of “Muslim globalization” to suggest that Islam has long been a globalizing force alongside Western-based capitalism and other forces. It explores this general model by using examples primarily from Southeast Asia

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Girls and Women in Kilifi District, Kenya are some of the world’s poorest and most disadvantaged people. Low retention rates in school, early and unintended pregnancies, and vulnerability to HIV/AIDS trap them in a cycle of intense poverty. Moving the Goalpost (MTG) in Kilifi uses football to empower girls and young women, helping them to fulfill their potential by engaging them in sport and educational development projects. This report analyzes the goals, challenges, and successes of MTG through understanding its organization capacity, and offers recommendations for improvement.

Symbols Of Religious Identity In Jordanian Society, Piotr Narel Apr 2012

Symbols Of Religious Identity In Jordanian Society, Piotr Narel

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Upon noticing a trend of religious symbolism within Jordan, I began wondering as to why it was so common. Knowing that the majority of Jordan adhered to Sunni Islam, I was surprised that many Jordanians felt that it was necessary to indicate their religion through objects that identify to which religion an individual adhered.

I developed the hypothesis that the uses of religious symbolism within the country are due not to inherently religious reasons, but that they do serve individuals in other ways. The aim of my research was to discover what the reasons for this use of religious symbolism …

From Betamax To Youtube: How Sony Corporation Of America V. Universal City Studios, Inc. Could Still Be A Standard For New Technology, Veronica Corsaro

Federal Communications Law Journal

Internet technological innovations, particularly the development of Peer-to-Peer ("P2P") networks and the proliferation of user-generated content sites, have introduced considerable challenges for the application of copyright law and infringement liability. The response from the courts and Congress has been mixed, with severe legal curtails being applied to P2P technology while usergenerated content sites have been afforded a level of protection against infringement claims as part of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act's section 512 "safe harbor" provisions. However, these provisions have raised concerns about the issue of secondary copyright liability, a matter that has still been left undefined. This Note will …

Aplikasi Elemen Saintifik Dalam Tafsir Al-Quran: Satu Pengamatan Awal Terhadap Manhaj Zaghlul Al-Najjar Dalam Tafsir Al-Ayah Al-Kawniyyah Fi Al-Quran Al-Karim, Selamat Amir, Monika @ Munirah Abd Razzak, Mohd Yakub @ Zulkifli Mohd Yusoff

Research Publications (2011 to 2015)

Research Publications (2011 to 2015)

Allah revealed the Quran to be practiced by all human beings irrespective of whether the humans are normal, or mentally or physically challenged. According to the Department of Malaysian Special Education, in 2002, there were 663 blind students and 3649 deaf students, all over Malaysia. However, in terms of Quran education, deaf students are far behind compared to blind students. This is because they could not hear and therefore posed a difficult situation for the teachers to teach them. Based on this initiative, Fakih methods have been introduced to eight deaf students to learn Quran in within two months. The …

The Effect Of Qur’Anic Recitation Competition To The Contemporary Muslim Women In Northern Nigeria, A. Muhammad Gusau Feb 2012

The Effect Of Qur’Anic Recitation Competition To The Contemporary Muslim Women In Northern Nigeria, A. Muhammad Gusau

Research Publications (2011 to 2015)

The importance of the Qur’an to the life of a Muslim cannot be over emphasised. It suffices to mention that it is a book of guidance that is responsible for the tremendous success recorded by the early Muslims. Indeed, its recitation provides the heart with the utmost tranquillity and protection from the satanic temptation. Women could be said to be more exposed to the treacherous activities of the Satan (devil), perhaps because of their nature of creation that is attractive or for the heedless attitude of most females to the injunctions of Shari’ah. Therefore, the introduction of Qur'anic competition that …

Achieving Virtues And Perfections Of The Human Potential Of Women In The Quran, Sadat Moosavi Zohreh, Wan Zailan Kamaruddin Wan Ali

Research Publications (2011 to 2015)

Religious schools and communities have different opinions about the real perfection of women. Obviously, identifying the women's ultimate perfection has essential role to determine their fate and the fate of the human society. Among these schools, comprehensive Islamic law, which is originated from Divine revelation, has bestowed enormous status for women by paying great attention to women traits. According to the holy Quran, women are equal to men in terms of humanity. Certainly, there are a lot of wise genesis differences between men and women, but Divine revelations stresses that human truth and gender has no role in awarding guidance. …

Muslim Minorities In The West: Between Fiqh Of Minorities And Integration, Dina M. Taha Feb 2012

Muslim Minorities In The West: Between Fiqh Of Minorities And Integration, Dina M. Taha

Theses and Dissertations

Fiqh of minorities is a specific framework/perspective of the general Fiqh that looks with one eye at the objectives and principles of Sharîâ a, and the other eye to consider the reality of Muslim minorities in cases that will, usually, only arise in the situation where Muslims constitute a minority. Fiqh of minority is, arguably, based on the premises that Muslim existence in non-Muslim communities, should promote a civilizational dialogue between the Islamic culture and other cultures. This paper argues that Fiqh of minorities' scholars attempt to provide legal opinions and solutions for Muslim minorities in the West in order …
