Walmart's Sustainability Journey: Andy Ruben And The Design Of Organizaional Structures And Systems (A), Andrew Spicer, Laura Lambdin
Wal-Mart Sustainability Case Project
The case “Andy Ruben and the Design of Strategic Goals and Processes” flows from the previous discussion, by moving from the development of an ambitious vision to the challenges of adopting strategic policies and processes to reach those aspirations in practice. This case puts students into the role of Andy Ruben, Walmart’s first Vice-President for Sustainability , asking them to make concrete decisions about what should be done, in what order, and by what process if they were to implement an ambitious corporate sustainability strategy. In the case, Ruben confronts specific choices about how to define the responsibilities of the …

Walmart's Sustainability Journey: Lee Scott's Founding Vision, Andrew Spicer, Laura Lambdin
Wal-Mart Sustainability Case Project
The first case—“Lee Scott’s Founding Vision”—takes the perspective from the apex of the organization as Walmart’s CEO, Lee Scott, develops and articulates his vision of what Walmart hopes to achieve by pursuing an aggressive sustainability strategy. This case explores the pressures that led Scott to announce the company’s ambitious sustainability goals: achieving zero waste, 100% renewable energy, and selling sustainable products. It also explores the choices made when defining and communicating the scope of the strategy, particularly through an in-depth analysis of his announcement of Walmart’s new goals in his October 2005, “Twenty-First Century Leadership” speech.

Consumers And Sustainability At Walmart: A Student's Perspective, Kealy Carter, Satish Jayachandran
Consumers And Sustainability At Walmart: A Student's Perspective, Kealy Carter, Satish Jayachandran
Wal-Mart Sustainability Case Project
To further encourage students to analyze initial goals in comparison with outcomes over time, we have developed a consumer-oriented case—“Consumers and Sustainability at Walmart: A Student’s Perspective”—that moves beyond the perspective of internal Walmart participants to explores issues of sustainability from the point of view of a typical Walmart shopper. In this case, we examine the experience of a fictional student shopper who goes to Walmart and wants to buy sustainable products, which helps raise questions for students about what Walmart’s actions mean to them as consumers, citizens as well as business professionals. The case also asks students to evaluate …

Department of Neuroscience Faculty Papers
A primary cause of morbidity and mortality following cervical spinal cord injury (SCI) is respiratory compromise, regardless of the level of trauma. In particular, SCI at mid-cervical regions targets degeneration of both descending bulbospinal respiratory axons and cell bodies of phrenic motor neurons, resulting in deficits in the function of the diaphragm, the primary muscle of inspiration. Contusion-type trauma to the cervical spinal cord is one of the most common forms of human SCI; however, few studies have evaluated mid-cervical contusion in animal models or characterized consequent histopathological and functional effects of degeneration of phrenic motor neuron-diaphragm circuitry. We have …

Public Health Return On Investment: Making The Case, Glen P. Mays
Health Management and Policy Presentations
Fiscal pressures and policy imperatives have created a need for rigorous economic analyses of public health programs and policies. ROI analyses can reveal whether the benefits of public health strategies justify their costs, who realizes these benefits and costs, and under what circumstances.

How Design Can Promote And Facilitate The Learning Of Scientific Information In A New And Innovative Way, Eryn Pierce
Honors Projects
The final project consists of an Herbarium Collection redesign and a mock-up of an Interactive App. As a double major in Graphic Design and Biology, the author set out to create a project that would encompass both fields of study while also solving a problem the author had personally experienced within the field of Science. Currently there are only a few traditional approaches utilized by most college professors to teach scientific information to students. These methods include textbook readings, lectures, and PowerPoint presentations. It has been shown that the ways in which technical information is disseminated significantly affects learner comprehension …

Recovery Of Metallic Materials From Printed Wiring Boards By Green Pyrolysis Process, Alex Luyima, Lifeng Zhang, Jaan Kers, Viktor Laurmaa
Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Currently, the main options for the treatment of electronic waste are involved in reuse, remanufacturing, and recycling, as well as incineration and land filling. Recycling of e-waste can be broadly divided into three major steps: (a) disassembly: selectively disassembly, targeting on singling out hazardous or valuable components for special treatment, is an indispensable process in recycling of e-waste; (b) upgrading: using mechanical processing and/or metallurgical processing to up-grade desirable materials content, i. e. preparing materials for refining process; (c) refining: in the last step, recovered materials are retreated or purified by using chemical (metallurgical) processing so as to be acceptable …

Cloud Computing For Environment-Friendly Data Centers, Michael Pawlish, Aparna Varde, Stefan Robila
Department of Computer Science Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
The purpose of this paper is to analyze the carbon footprint and utilization rates in a data center. The long-term goal of this work is to give data center administrators an enhanced perspective of data center operations to allow for more energy efficient operation, to lower the carbon footprint, and to promote green data centers. Previous literature shows that low utilization rates in data centers are due to the forecasting of demand to meet spikes in data center use. This management policy has led to many servers running idle the majority of the time which is a waste of resources. …
Caffeination And Loop: Approaches To Literary And Science Fiction, Griffin O'Hara
Caffeination And Loop: Approaches To Literary And Science Fiction, Griffin O'Hara
Undergraduate University Honors Capstones
Griffin O'Hara's critical introduction to two of his original stories discusses the author’s merger of two genres, popular science fiction and literary fiction. Previous experiments with this combination appear in the novels of David Foster Wallace’s Infinite Jest and Samuel Delany’s Dhalgren. O’Hara’s analysis of Foster’s and Delany’s influences on his stories delineates the strengths of both science fiction and literary fiction and explains how the merger results in expanded communication between author and reader. The two original stories resulting from his experimentation and illustrating these ideas are “Caffeination” and “Loop.” “Caffeination” is a work of fiction that follows the …
Developing Life Cycle Management Plans For Power Plant Components, Srinath Raghavan, Badrul H. Chowdhury
Developing Life Cycle Management Plans For Power Plant Components, Srinath Raghavan, Badrul H. Chowdhury
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
A process to develop life cycle management (LCM) plans for power plant components is described. an LCM plan is a guide to make operational decision for a piece of equipment over its life cycle. an LCM typically consists of preventive maintenance schedule, condition monitoring and inspection activities, replacement or refurbishment plans and spares management. It is developed on the basis of component failure modes, operating history, maintenance practices, ageing, spares and obsolescence. Once an LCM plan has been formulated it can be compared with other alternative LCM strategies in order to minimize the long-term costs over the plant lifetime. for …
