Lincoln-Juarez Land Port Of Entry Vehicle Processing Facility, Nathan Clifford, Dylan Morgan, Chad Norvell, Chris Kline, Raul Bayoan Cal, Matthew S. Melius, Tha Architecture

Research-Based Design Initiative

PROJECT OVERVIEW:

The indoor environmental quality of a building has a significant impact on occupant health, comfort, and productivity. Exposure to the exhaust fumes of idling vehicles is a dangerous but avoidable toxic hazard. Proper ventilation of vehicle inspection areas is essential, and to the maximum possible means, should be accomplished by natural ventilation. We intend to research the extent to which it is possible to use passive ventilation strategies to alleviate the auto exhaust exposure of officers and travelers using the Port of Laredo entry.

Vietnamese Textile And Garment Industry In The Global Supply Chain: State Strategies And Workers' Responses, Angie Tran Oct 2012

Vietnamese Textile And Garment Industry In The Global Supply Chain: State Strategies And Workers' Responses, Angie Tran

SSGS Faculty Publications and Presentations

This paper examines the development of textile and garment manufacturing in the context of the prevailing arguments on pursuing market- oriented liberalisation and state directed domestic linkages, and the impacts of these developments on unions and workers in Vietnam. Despite rapid growth in exports and employment, the empirical evidence shows that market-oriented integration in the global economy has limited firms’ operations to low value- added activities and workers to toil for non-livable wages. The global supply chain has also exposed firms and consigned workers to the vicissitudes of volatile fluctuations in demand causing retrenchments, substandard working conditions and a vicious …

Steelhead Habitat Assessment Of Three Small Coastal Central California Streams, Colin L. Nicol Oct 2012

Steelhead Habitat Assessment Of Three Small Coastal Central California Streams, Colin L. Nicol

SNS Master's Theses

Anadromous steelhead (Oncorhynchus mykiss) populations on the central coast of California have been reduced to critical levels throughout the last century. Six streams run through the Coast Dairies Property near Davenport, CA; three of the streams are known to support steelhead, and three do not support any known populations. This study examined two physical factors that are potentially limiting steelhead success in the three small streams. The first potential limiting factor examined is low density substrate found in the three streams (Santa Cruz mudstone). The presence of low density substrate could lead to increased risk of redd ‘washout,’ or destruction …

Linking Habitat Heterogeneity To Genetic Partitioning In The Rocky Subtidal Using Black Surfperch (Embiotica Jacksoni), Scott Robert Williams Toews Oct 2012

Linking Habitat Heterogeneity To Genetic Partitioning In The Rocky Subtidal Using Black Surfperch (Embiotica Jacksoni), Scott Robert Williams Toews

SNS Master's Theses

Habitat composition and complexity can play an important role in structuring populations of marine organisms. However, the interactions between the physical and biological landscape and their combined effect on marine population dynamics are not well understood. In this study, I explored the role of habitat complexity (three-dimensional habitat structure) on habitat composition (abundance and distribution of habitat types) and their combined role in structuring genetic variation in populations of the black surfperch Embiotoca jacksoni, within Monterey Bay, California. Black surfperch have no pelagic larval stage, limited adult dispersal, and associate strongly with benthic habitat making them an excellent model system …

Determining Cognitive And Non-Cognitive Predictors Of Success On The National Physical Therapy Examination, Carolyn Galleher, Peter J. Rundquist, David B. Barker, Wen-Pin Chang Oct 2012

Determining Cognitive And Non-Cognitive Predictors Of Success On The National Physical Therapy Examination, Carolyn Galleher, Peter J. Rundquist, David B. Barker, Wen-Pin Chang

Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice

Background and Purpose: A variety of admission criteria have been utilized to assist in the selection of viable candidates in physical therapy programs. These criteria include cognitive measurements such as grade point average (GPA) and standardized test scores. However, only a few studies correlated these cognitive measurements to predicting success on the National Physical Therapy Examination (NPTE). The purpose of this study was to examine the performance of entry-level doctoral physical therapy (DPT) students on prior cognitive measurements and correlate it to passing on the first attempt of the NPTE. This study also aimed to determine if two inventory surveys …

Beyond Ruggie’S Guiding Principles On Business And Human Rights: Charting An Embracive Approach To Corporate Human Rights Compliance, Robert C. Blitt Oct 2012

Beyond Ruggie’S Guiding Principles On Business And Human Rights: Charting An Embracive Approach To Corporate Human Rights Compliance, Robert C. Blitt

Scholarly Works

To what extent should or must a corporation contemplate international human rights law? Following a brief discussion of the increasing influence of transnational corporations and global business transactions, as well as the growth of the international human rights system, this Article uses the 2011 United Nations’ Guiding Principles on the effective prevention of, and remedy for, business-related human rights harm as a jumping-off point for addressing the most recent developments related to identifying and regulating business-related human rights practices. After identifying an emerging divide between endorsement and criticism of the Guiding Principles, the Article concludes with a forward-looking view, arguing …

Developing A Space For Children: An Internship With The Mullumbimby Community Garden, Eden Olsen Oct 2012

Developing A Space For Children: An Internship With The Mullumbimby Community Garden, Eden Olsen

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

This paper aims to demonstrate my independent study project internship at the Mullumbimby Community Garden (MCG), an interactive learning site for the citizens of Byron Shire. As an intern I spent 152.5 hours from October 29th to November 23rd planting, planning projects, attending meetings, and helping to educate about the importance of sustainable food production. More specifically, I focused on the development of the Children’s Garden, building vertical garden beds, planting the sensory garden, attending meetings, and helping to design and analyze costs for new structures to be implemented in the near future.

This study reaches further than …

Modular Autonomous Biosampler (Mab)- A Prototype System For Distinct Biological Size-Class Sampling And Preservation, Arthur Trembanis, Craig Cary, Val E. Schmidt, Don Clarke, Tristan Crees, Eric Jackson Oct 2012

Modular Autonomous Biosampler (Mab)- A Prototype System For Distinct Biological Size-Class Sampling And Preservation, Arthur Trembanis, Craig Cary, Val E. Schmidt, Don Clarke, Tristan Crees, Eric Jackson

Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping

Presently, there is a community wide deficiency in our ability to collect and preserve multiple size-class biologic samples across a broad spectrum of oceanographic platforms (e.g. AUVs, ROVs, and Ocean Observing System Nodes). This is particularly surprising in comparison to the level of instrumentation that now exists for acquiring physical and geophysical data (e.g. side-scan sonar, current profiles etc.), from these same platforms. We present our effort to develop a low-cost, high sample capacity modular, autonomous biological sampling device (MAB). The unit is designed for filtering and preserving 3 distinct biological size-classes (including bacteria), and is deployable in any aquatic setting …
