“The Lingha Boys Of Siem Reap” A Baseline Study Of Sexually-Exploited Young Men In Siem Reap, Cambodia, Jarrett Davis, Glenn Miles
Annual Interdisciplinary Conference on Human Trafficking: 4th (2012)
Young women working as masseurs (with additional sexual services) is very common and visible in Cambodia but there are increasingly more masseur places available for both local and foreign men which also provide sexual services. Most of the research being conducted with entertainment workers has a focus on HIV but this research provides a broader understanding of their other needs and vulnerabilities. In this session as well as presenting the research findings we will consider what can be done to reach out to this hidden community to reduce their vulnerability to exploitation.

New Autonomous Motors Of Metal-Organic Framework (Mof) Powered By Reorganization Of Self-Assembled Peptides At Interfaces, Yasuhiro Ikezoe, Gosuke Washino, Takashi Uemura, Susumu Kitagawa, Hiroshi Matsui
New Autonomous Motors Of Metal-Organic Framework (Mof) Powered By Reorganization Of Self-Assembled Peptides At Interfaces, Yasuhiro Ikezoe, Gosuke Washino, Takashi Uemura, Susumu Kitagawa, Hiroshi Matsui
Publications and Research
There have developed a variety of microsystems that harness energy and convert it to mechanical motion. Here we developed new autonomous biochemical motors by integrating metal-organic framework (MOF) and self-assembling peptides. MOF is applied as an energy-storing cell that assembles peptides inside nanoscale pores of the coordination framework. The robust assembling nature of peptides enables reconfiguring their assemblies at the water-MOF interface, which is converted to fuel energy. Re-organization of hydrophobic peptides could create the large surface tension gradient around the MOF and it efficiently powers the translation motion of MOF. As a comparison, the velocity of normalized by volume …

I wish to commend the TCF Chapter of Seattle for organizing this Fund raising event and for the past efforts they have made in sponsoring several TCF schools in various parts of the country. Overseas Pakistanis have proved to be a big supporter of TCF in its operations and expansion. Both the attendance at today's event and your enthusiastic response have inspired me.

The Impact Of Covariance Misspecification In Multivariate Gaussian Mixtures On Estimation And Inference: An Application To Longitudinal Modeling, Brianna C. Heggeseth, Nicholas P. Jewell
The Impact Of Covariance Misspecification In Multivariate Gaussian Mixtures On Estimation And Inference: An Application To Longitudinal Modeling, Brianna C. Heggeseth, Nicholas P. Jewell
U.C. Berkeley Division of Biostatistics Working Paper Series
Multivariate Gaussian mixtures are a class of models that provide a flexible parametric approach for the representation of heterogeneous multivariate outcomes. When the outcome is a vector of repeated measurements taken on the same subject, there is often inherent dependence between observations. However, a common covariance assumption is conditional independence---that is, given the mixture component label, the outcomes for subjects are independent. In this paper, we study, through asymptotic bias calculations and simulation, the impact of covariance misspecification in multivariate Gaussian mixtures. Although maximum likelihood estimators of regression and mixing probability parameters are not consistent under misspecification, they have little …

Administrative Issues Journal
Technological and pedagogical advances in distance education have accentuated the necessity for higher education to keep pace regarding institutional infrastructures. Each infrastructure—driven by a common mission to provide quality learning—interprets quality according to standards established by various governmental and accrediting entities. Staying ahead of the technological and pedagogical changes have been challenging for many public higher education institutions, which are continuing to struggle with online course design and delivery modes (Suttle, 2010). Online universities, however, have aggressively and strategically responded to technological and pedagogical shifts across institutional, departmental, program, and course levels according to their institutional mission, vision, and core …

Inter-Individual Variation During Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation And Normalization Of Dose Using Mri-Derived Computational Models, Abhishek Datta, Dennis Quangvinh Truong, Preet Minhas, Lucas C. Parra, Marom Bikson
Publications and Research
Background: Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS) is a non-invasive, versatile, and safe neuromodulation technology under investigation for the treatment of neuropsychiatric disorders, adjunct to rehabilitation, and cognitive enhancement in healthy adults. Despite promising results, there is variability in responsiveness. One potential source of variability is the intensity of current delivered to the brain which is a function of both the operator controlled tDCS dose (electrode montage and total applied current) and subject specific anatomy. We are interested in both the scale of this variability across anatomical typical adults and methods to normalize inter-individual variation by customizing tDCS dose. Computational FEM …

The Obama Effect: A Radical Rorschach Test, Jill Gill
The Obama Effect: A Radical Rorschach Test, Jill Gill
History Faculty Publications and Presentations
Watching Barack Obama’s presidential victory in November 2008, nearly every observer seemed to grasp the historic importance of the moment. Our nation, born amid ideals of human equality while economically tethered to black slavery—and then for a century more to federally-condoned, nationwide discrimination—had just elected its first black commander in chief. Clearly, America had taken another huge stride toward living out the meaning of its creed. After all, Obama unexpectedly beat Hillary Clinton in very white states like Idaho and Iowa to win his party’s nomination. Then he picked up some unlikely victories within the former Confederacy, namely Virginia, Florida …

Few people doubt that severe poverty is a pressing moral issue. But what sorts of obligations, if any, do affluent people have toward the severely poor? If one accepts the idea that one has some obligations to the severely poor there still remains disagreement about the magnitude of this obligation and when it obtains. I consider Peter Singer's influential “shallow pond” argument, which holds that affluent people have greater obligations toward the severely poor than ordinary moral judgments suggest. Critics hold that Singer's view is excessively demanding and therefore untenable. I thus turn to the parable of the Good Samaritan …

System Dynamics Modeling Of Prescription Opioid Pain Reliever Abuse, Alexandra Nielsen
System Dynamics Modeling Of Prescription Opioid Pain Reliever Abuse, Alexandra Nielsen
Systems Science Friday Noon Seminar Series
The nonmedical use of prescription opioid pain relievers and associated overdose deaths have been labeled an epidemic by the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention. While these medicines play an important role in the treatment of pain, the benefits of opioids for the treatment of pain need to be balanced against these very real risks. Alex has been working closely with Professor Wayne Wakeland, Teresa Schmidt, and Dr. Dennis McCarty (OHSU) to create a dynamic systems-level model of opioid use, abuse, and diversion in order to give context to current research in this area and to provide a better understanding …
