Fraternity In Politics: New Scholarship And Publications From Latin America, Rodrigo Mardones Z. Oct 2012

Fraternity In Politics: New Scholarship And Publications From Latin America, Rodrigo Mardones Z.

Claritas: Journal of Dialogue and Culture

In this article, the author reviews a book series on fraternity, published in Spanish since 2006, that is the result of a new interest among Latin American scholars in the topic of fraternity. Most of the books in the series are edited volumes that include perspectives from several disciplines in the social sciences and the humanities. Latin American scholars have responded to an intellectual challenge brought from Italy to the region by Antonio Baggio’s seminal work on this topic. In the last five years, studies on fraternity have expanded throughout Latin America, as they have increasingly captured the attention from …

Intellectual Strangers No More? Peter Singer And Roman Catholicism On Ecological Concern, Charles C. Camosy Oct 2012

Intellectual Strangers No More? Peter Singer And Roman Catholicism On Ecological Concern, Charles C. Camosy

Claritas: Journal of Dialogue and Culture

Peter Singer’s approach to ethics as a utilitarian preference seems to have little to say to Christian ethics. But for a host of important issues, and in particular for those related to ecological ethics, this article argues that this perception is fundamentally mistaken. When comparing Singer’s views to a Roman Catholic approach, we find that their disagreement with regard to ecological concern, though significant and important to address, is surprisingly narrow—limited to topics such as intrinsic value and overpopulation. We find broad agreement not only with regard to the seriousness of our ecological problems but more importantly about the radical …

Acoustic Emission In Structural Health Monitoring Of Reinforced Concrete Structures, Matteo Di Benedetti Oct 2012

Acoustic Emission In Structural Health Monitoring Of Reinforced Concrete Structures, Matteo Di Benedetti

Open Access Dissertations

Structural health monitoring (SHM) is a term used in the last decades to describe a range of systems implemented on constructed facilities (including reinforced concrete (RC)) with the purpose of assisting and informing owners/operators on the condition of structures under gradual or sudden changes to their state of serviceability. At the simplest level and with reference to RC, recurrent visual observation and assessment of structural condition (e.g., corrosion, cracking, spalling and deformations) could be viewed as SHM activities. Nowadays, the aim of research efforts is to develop effective and reliable means of acquiring, managing, integrating and interpreting structural performance data. …

Neurology Faculty Publications

Objective

To evaluate in-patient mortality and predictors of death associated with convulsive status epilepticus (SE) in a large, multi-center, pediatric cohort.

Patients and Methods

We identified our cohort from the KID Inpatient Database for the years 1997, 2000, 2003 and 2006. We queried the database for convulsive SE, associated diagnoses, and for inpatient death. Univariate logistic testing was used to screen for potential risk factors. These risk factors were then entered into a stepwise backwards conditional multivariable logistic regression procedure. P-values less than 0.05 were taken as significant.

Results

We identified 12,365 (5,541 female) patients with convulsive SE aged …

Paediatrics Publications

Background: Aerobic glycolysis promotes resistance against Aβ toxicity. Results: Increased LDHA and PDK1 expression attenuates mitochondrial activity and confers resistance to Aβ. These proteins are down-regulated in a transgenic Alzheimer disease (AD) mouse model, and PDK1 is decreased in AD brain. Conclusion: PDK and LDHA are central mediators of Aβ resistance. Significance: Drugs that augment aerobic glycolysis may enhance brain cell survival in AD patients. © 2012 by The American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Inc.

Successful Management Of Bleeding Complications In Patients Supported With Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation With Primary Respiratory Failure., K Lamb, Sw Cowan, N Evans, H Pitcher, T Moritz, M Lazar, H Hirose, Nc Cavarocchi

Department of Cancer Biology Faculty Papers

BACKGROUND: Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) is a lifesaving procedure in patients with severe respiratory insufficiency failing conventional support. Bleeding complications are common due to the necessity for anticoagulation and circuit-related factors. METHODS: A retrospective review was conducted in patients requiring ECMO for respiratory failure from 7/2010 to 6/2011 to identify episodes of major bleeding, bleeding management and outcomes. RESULTS: Twenty-one patients were supported with ECMO during the study although five experienced massive bleeding related to chest tube insertion, jejunal arterio-venous malformations, distal perfusion cannula dislodgement and ventricular rupture. Patients required aggressive resuscitation or endoscopic or operative intervention, totaling 28 procedures. …

Water: Conserving Our Most Precious Resource, John Holmes Gcvo, Kbe, Cmg Oct 2012

Water: Conserving Our Most Precious Resource, John Holmes Gcvo, Kbe, Cmg

Reports (USI)

This was a thoughtful discussion on a vital and still neglected issue. While there was enough fresh water in the world overall, its distribution did not match that of the global population. Climate change, continuing population growth, urbanisation and altered dietary habits were all exacerbating existing problems of fresh water availability. But there was little new action at national or international level, though local and private sector decisions were making a difference in some places. In the end we might have to take the water to the people rather than expecting the people to go to the water, as had …

Estimating Hiv Prevalence In The Presence Of Spatial Variation, Matthew D. Austin, Christopher D. Barr, Victor Degruttola Oct 2012

Estimating Hiv Prevalence In The Presence Of Spatial Variation, Matthew D. Austin, Christopher D. Barr, Victor Degruttola

COBRA Preprint Series

Data from antenatal clinics in Botswana provide information on age, HIV status, and geographic cluster (clinic) for women in their child-bearing years. To make use of these data, it is necessary to extend spline estimation methods to adjust for correlation that arises due to geographic proximity of clinics and closeness in age among women within clinics. We use a logistic model with mean function specified by natural cubic splines, and a composite likelihood approach to accommodate all possible pairs of geographical clusters. These methods allow us to generate smooth estimates of age-specific HIV prevalence in Botswana. Repeated measures of such …
