Development And Validation Of A Simple Method For The Detection Of Fascaplysin In Plasma, Kenneth H. Swartz, Frederick A. Valeriote, Joseph Media, Tyler A. Johnson, Karen Tenney, Phillip Crews, Jiajiu Shaw

Natural Sciences and Mathematics | Faculty Scholarship

Fascaplysin is a cytotoxic natural product isolated from a variety of Indo-Pacific marine organisms, primarily Fascaplysinopsis sponges and Didemnum tunicates. Positive xenograft studies involving this alkaloid structural class have indicated that fascaplysin may serve as an important lead compound for preclinical development. This study was undertaken as a prelude to a full pharmacokinetics and therapeutic assessment of fascaplysin. We describe here a simple plasma preparation and a rapid HPLC method for the detection of fascaplysin in mice. The method was validated by parameters including good linear correlation, a limit of quantification of 107.1 μg/ mL, and a good precision with …

School of Pharmacy Faculty Presentations

Background: Since its inception, Medicare Part D requires beneficiaries to choose from a myriad of insurance plans in order to receive prescription drug coverage. Moreover, each year beneficiaries are confronted with plan cancellations, new plan offerings, changes in existing plan formularies and cost-sharing structure. Objective: This study prospectively examined the relationship between stand-alone prescription drug plan (PDP) costs, subsidy status, and the number of plans offered in California from 2009-2012. Methods: Forty-one community outreach events were held throughout Central/Northern California during the Medicare Part D annual election periods from 2008-2011. In total, 1,578 beneficiaries were assisted, 983 (62.2%) of whom …

Estimating Scale And Scope Effects In Public Health Delivery: Implications For Regionalization, Glen P. Mays, Rachel A. Hogg, Rick Ingram, Kristina Rabarison Oct 2012

Estimating Scale And Scope Effects In Public Health Delivery: Implications For Regionalization, Glen P. Mays, Rachel A. Hogg, Rick Ingram, Kristina Rabarison

Health Management and Policy Presentations

OBJECTIVES: The nation's public health delivery system comprises nearly 3000 local public health agencies that vary widely in capabilities. Economic pressures, workforce shortages, and new national accreditation standards are leading these agencies to explore mechanisms for pooling resources to enhance delivery and improve population health.

METHODS: A longitudinal cohort design is used to analyze changes in the availability and perceived effectiveness of services delivered by local public health providers. A stratified random sample of the nation's 3000 local public health agencies (n=497) were surveyed in 1998 and again in 2006 and 2011 (70% response) to measure the availability of 20 …

Lonomics Atlas: A Tool To Explore Interconnected Ionomic, Genomic And Environmental Data, Eduard Dragut, Amgad Madkour, Mohamed Nabeel, Peter Baker, Mourad Ouzzani, David Salt

Cyber Center Publications

Ionomics Atlas facilitates access, analysis and interpretation of an existing large-scale heterogeneous dataset consisting of ionomic (elemental composition of an organism), ge- netic (heritable changes in the DNA of an organism) and ge- ographic information (geographic location, altitude, climate, soil properties, etc). Ionomics Atlas allows connections to be made between the genetic regulation of the ionome of plant populations and their landscape distribution, allowing scientists to investigate the role of natural ionomic variation in adaptation of populations to varied environmental conditions in the landscape. The goal of the Ionomics Atlas is twofold: (1) to allow both novice and expert users …

Nadph Oxidase 4 Mediates Insulin-Stimulated Hif-1Α And Vegf Expression, And Angiogenesis In Vitro, Dan Meng, Aihong Mei, Junxu Liu, Xueling Kang, Xianglin Shi, Ruizhe Qian, Sifeng Chen

Toxicology and Cancer Biology Faculty Publications

Acute intensive insulin therapy causes a transient worsening of diabetic retinopathy in type 1 diabetes patients and is related to VEGF expression. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) have been shown to be involved in HIF-1α and VEGF expression induced by insulin, but the role of specific ROS sources has not been fully elucidated. In this study we examined the role of NADPH oxidase subunit 4 (Nox4) in insulin-stimulated HIF-1α and VEGF expression, and angiogenic responses in human microvascular endothelial cells (HMVECs). Here we demonstrate that knockdown of Nox4 by siRNA reduced insulin-stimulated ROS generation, the tyrosine phosphorylation of IR-β and IRS-1, …

Kitchen Stories: A Review, Dan Wulff, Sally St. George, Sandy Harper-Jaques, Lorne Jaques

The Qualitative Report

Using four voices, we created a movie review of Kitchen Stories, a Scandinavian movie ostensibly about a research project, but with layers of meaning extending beyond research into relationships, wider communities, and teaching. As friends and colleagues, our co-authored review/essay allowed each of us room to elaborate numerous themes that can inform and support a variety of researchers and practitioners. This writing also confirmed our belief that contemporary movies can be evocative learning devices for professionals.
