Welcome to the 2nd issue of volume 5 of Gifted Children, the electronic journal of the AERA Special Interest Group (SIG) for Research on Giftedness, Creativity, and Talent. It is with great excitement that I announce several major changes to Gifted Children. The SIG leadership decided last year at the annual AERA meeting to change the journal to a peer-reviewed format, with SIG executive committee members serving as editorial board reviewers. In addition, Marcia Gentry worked with Purdue University Libraries to establish online manuscript submission and publication for the journal. As a result, all future issues of …

Rural–Urban Differences In Dental Service Use Among Children Enrolled In A Private Dental Insurance Plan In Wisconsin: Analysis Of Administrative Data, Pradeep Bhagavatula, Qun Xiang, Aniko Szabo, Fredrick Eichmiller, Raymond A. Kuthy, Christopher Okunseri

School of Dentistry Faculty Research and Publications

Background

Studies on rural–urban differences in dental care have primarily focused on differences in utilization rates and preventive dental services. Little is known about rural–urban differences in the use of wider range of dental procedures. This study examined patterns of preventive, restorative, endodontic, and extraction procedures provided to children enrolled in Delta Dental of Wisconsin (DDWI).

Methods

We analyzed DDWI enrollment and claims data for children aged 0-18 years from 2002 to 2008. We modified and used a rural and urban classification based on ZIP codes developed by the Wisconsin Area Health Education Center (AHEC). We categorized the ZIP codes …

The rising rates of autism diagnosis among children is becoming a topic of growing interest among many arms of the research community. The most recent CDC data and statistics suggests that the prevalence of autism in the US is about 11.3 per 1000 children; this equates to about 1 in every 88 births (CDC, 2012). The trending increase in prevalence has increased the need for autism research greatly. So much is unknown about the nature of Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) that there is a seemingly endless range of subject matter for pertinent research. There is currently such a surge of …

Happiness At Work: Rules For Employee Satisfaction And Engagement, Femi Cadmus Jan 2012

Happiness At Work: Rules For Employee Satisfaction And Engagement, Femi Cadmus

Faculty Scholarship

The concept of employee satisfaction and engagement is not new. Quite recently, however, there appears to be renewed interest in positive psychology, tracking what makes for happiness in general, and how this translates in the workplace. Cultivating and maintaining a climate and culture which breeds happy, motivated, and productive employees in a library setting requires hard work. Happiness in the workplace is not unattainable, but it requires a concerted plan of action and consistent effort by managers. Managers also need to take steps to make sure that their own personal and work needs are being taken care off to avert …

A Theoretical Formation Of Emotional Intelligence And Childhood Trauma Among Adolescents, A.A. Tolegenova, S.M. Jakupov, Man Cheung Chung, S. Saduova, M.S. Jakupov

All Works

Problem Statement: Much has been documented on the impact of emotional intelligence (EI) on adolescents in terms of their problem-solving skills (Ajawani, 2012), creativity (Vijaykumar, 2012), and academic performance (Shenoy & Thingujam, 2012). Increasingly, emphasis has been paid on the effect of EI on health among this population. For example, EI has been shown to interact with personality traits to affect psychological well-being (Salami, 2012). EI, based on literature focusing on the adult population, shows that it is a protective factor and can buffer against psychological distress (e.g. Hunt & Evans, 2004; Schmidt & Andrykowski, 2004). However, little is known …

Producing Multimedia Resources For Teaching Medical Students About The Social Context Of Medicine: A Partnership Approach, Tracey J Collett, Priska Schoenborn, Verity Campbell Barr, Fiona Dalton, Valerie Huggins, Oxana Poverjuc, Lynne Wyness

Plymouth Institute of Education

The UK General Medical Council (GMC) requires medical school graduates to be able to apply social science principles to medical practice (1993, 2009). At the policy level it is recognised that understanding of the social context of medicine results in drastic improvements to health care, morbidity and mortality (see, for example, Russell, 2009) but many undergraduate students tend to see the social sciences as ‘nice to know’ rather than ‘need to know’ (Armstrong 1979, Bolman et al, 1995, Benbassett et al, 2003, Litvia and Peters, 2008). The emphasis on disciplinary integration (Harden, 2000) and pedagogic transition from didactic to ‘problem …

Walking As A Meaningful Leisure Occupation: The Implications For Occupational Therapy, R Wensley, A Slade Jan 2012

Walking As A Meaningful Leisure Occupation: The Implications For Occupational Therapy, R Wensley, A Slade

School of Health Professions

Introduction: In response to growing interest in leisure in occupational therapy and the importance of understanding how occupations maintain, enhance and promote health and wellbeing, a qualitative phenomenological study was conducted to explore the experiences of walking for leisure. Method: Six healthy student participants, identified as regular walkers, were interviewed using a semi-structured format. Data were analysed following interpretative phenomenological analysis methodology. Findings: Participants expressed how and why walking was meaningful to them; the four main themes were social connectedness, wellbeing, connection to nature and achievement from a challenge. Findings suggest that occupational therapists could use walking and leisure occupations …

Novel Etomidate Derivatives, J. Robert Sneyd Jan 2012

Novel Etomidate Derivatives, J. Robert Sneyd

More Faculty of Health Research

Etomidate is a well established intravenous anaesthetic agent which has been widely used. Recognised limitations of the agent include adrenocortical suppression, myoclonus and post-operative nausea and vomiting, PONV. MOC-etomidate, carboetomidate and MOC-carboetomidate are novel etomidate derivatives. Their preclinical data and their potential for human administration are critically reviewed. 'Soft' pharmacology (rapid ester hydrolysis) limits the duration of action of MOC-etomidate and MOC-carboetomidate giving them rapid offset after administration is discontinued. Adrenocortical depression is minimised either by ester hydrolysis or by structural change to the etomidate molecule. Potential limitations include the yet to be determined incidence of myoclonus and PONV if …

More Faculty of Health Research

Background: Intraoperative fluid therapy regimens using oesophageal Doppler monitoring (ODM) to optimize stroke volume (SV) (goal-directed fluid therapy, GDT) have been associated with a reduction in length of stay (LOS) and complication rates after major surgery. We hypothesized that intraoperative GDT would reduce the time to surgical readiness for discharge (RfD) of patients having major elective colorectal surgery but that this effect might be less marked in aerobically fit patients. Methods: In this double-blinded controlled trial, 179 patients undergoing major open or laparoscopic colorectal surgery were characterized as aerobically 'fit' (n=123) or 'unfit' (n=56) on the basis of their performance …

Adolescent Males' Similarity, Emotional Safety, And Change In Strengths-Based Programming, Wendy Elaine Viola Jan 2012

Adolescent Males' Similarity, Emotional Safety, And Change In Strengths-Based Programming, Wendy Elaine Viola

Dissertations and Theses

In recent decades, the use of strengths-based approaches has become increasingly popular in youth intervention and prevention programs (Maton et al., 2004), which emphasize creating emotionally safe environments through the process of relational community building (Maton, 2000). However, relatively little is known about the relationship between group composition, specifically similarity between group members, and emotional safety and program efficacy. This thesis examines the relationship between adolescent males' similarity to their peers in terms of their demographic profiles and behaviors and belief systems, experiences of emotional safety, and changing behaviors and belief systems in a strengths-based intervention program within Ohio juvenile …

Streamflow Analysis And A Comparison Of Hydrologic Metrics In Urban Streams, Matthew Lawton Wood Jan 2012

Streamflow Analysis And A Comparison Of Hydrologic Metrics In Urban Streams, Matthew Lawton Wood

Dissertations and Theses

This study investigates the hydrologic effects of urbanization in two Portland, Oregon streams through a comparison of three hydrologic metrics. Hydrologic metrics used in this study are the mean annual runoff ratio (Qa), mean seasonal runoff ratio (Qw and Qd), and the fraction of time that streamflow exceeds the mean streamflow during the year (TQmean). Additionally, the relative change in streamflow in response to storm events was examined for two watersheds. For this investigation urban development is represented by two urbanization metrics: percent impervious and road density. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used to evaluate the relationship between the hydrologic …

The Crossover Effects Of Supervisor Work-Family Positive Spillover On Employee Sleep Deficiency: Moderating Effects Of Family Supportive Supervisor Behaviors (Fssb), Tori Laurelle Crain Jan 2012

The Crossover Effects Of Supervisor Work-Family Positive Spillover On Employee Sleep Deficiency: Moderating Effects Of Family Supportive Supervisor Behaviors (Fssb), Tori Laurelle Crain

Dissertations and Theses

The majority of literature on the work-family interface has focused on, and provided evidence of, the conflict associated with engagement in both work and family roles (Eby, Casper, Lockwood, Bordeaux, & Brinley, 2005). Research examining the positive aspects of work and family participation remains limited. The current study investigated how work-family positive spillover is transferred between members of the supervisor-employee dyad and subsequently how this affects employee sleep outcomes. It was hypothesized that work-to-family affective positive spillover experienced by supervisors would crossover to employees and increase their experiences of work-to-family affective positive spillover. In turn, this would allow for better …

Let's Try To Change It: Psychiatric Stigmatization, Consumer/Survivor Activism, And The Link And Phelan Model, María Jimena Alvarado Chavarría Jan 2012

Let's Try To Change It: Psychiatric Stigmatization, Consumer/Survivor Activism, And The Link And Phelan Model, María Jimena Alvarado Chavarría

Dissertations and Theses

Stigma has been described as the most significant obstacle to quality of life for individuals with major psychiatric diagnoses (Sartorious, 1998). Much of the psychological literature on stigma focuses on individual attributes and interactions at the micro level, rather than macro level dynamics. In critiquing this traditional focus, Link and Phelan (2001) present a model in which stigma ensues when labeling, stereotyping, separation, status loss, and discrimination co-occur in a situation of power imbalance. Even as the model fills a gap in conceptualizing stigma, its emphasis on power is unidirectional and fails to account for power as a form of …
