Design And Experimental Study Of Turbo Equalization For Multiple Antenna Systems, Amirhossein Rafati
Design And Experimental Study Of Turbo Equalization For Multiple Antenna Systems, Amirhossein Rafati
Doctoral Dissertations
"Multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) wireless communication systems have attracted a lot of interest in the past decade due to their capability in delivering high spectral efficiency as well as their robust performance against fading. In MIMO inter-symbol interference (lSI) channels, a severe interference problem occurs due to the lSI and co-channel interference. Thus, the error propagation problem becomes more serious, and its mitigation has to be considered when designing the receiver. In this regard, a turbo equalizer which exchanges soft information between the equalizer and the decoder has been shown to be an effective method to combat the lSI caused by …
Therapeutic Effects Of N-Acetylcysteine Amide In The Treatment Of Eye Disorders, Joshua W. Carey
Therapeutic Effects Of N-Acetylcysteine Amide In The Treatment Of Eye Disorders, Joshua W. Carey
Doctoral Dissertations
"The loss of vision from age-related eye diseases now affects over 30 million people in the United States and is expected to reach twice that number within the next couple of decades. Among these disorders, age-related macular degeneration and cataract formation represent the largest percentage of these cases. Therapeutic options available for treating age-related macular degeneration are limited and there is no noninvasive form of treatment for cataracts current available. Several studies have indicated that oxidative stress plays an important role in the pathology of these age-related eye disorders. If oxidative stress is responsible for the initiation and progression of …
Computational Fluid Dynamics (Cfd) Modeling Of Mixed Convection Flows In Building Enclosures, Alexander Kayne
Computational Fluid Dynamics (Cfd) Modeling Of Mixed Convection Flows In Building Enclosures, Alexander Kayne
All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)
In recent years Computational Fluid Dynamics: CFD) simulations are increasingly used to model the air circulation and temperature environment inside the rooms of residential and office buildings to gain insight into the relative energy consumptions of various HVAC systems for cooling/heating for climate control and thermal comfort. This requires accurate simulation of turbulent flow and heat transfer for various types of ventilation systems using the Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes: RANS) equations of fluid dynamics. Large Eddy Simulation: LES) or Direct Numerical Simulation: DNS) of Navier-Stokes equations is computationally intensive and expensive for simulations of this kind. As a result, vast majority of …

Foot Deformity And Bone Strength In Charcot Neuropathic Osteoarthropathy, David Joseph Gutekunst
Foot Deformity And Bone Strength In Charcot Neuropathic Osteoarthropathy, David Joseph Gutekunst
All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)
Charcot neuropathic osteoarthropathy: CN) is characterized by progressive degradation of bones and joints in a denervated, inflamed foot and ankle. Diabetes mellitus: DM) and peripheral neuropathy: PN) are the most common precursors of CN, which can lead to pedal fracture, subluxation, and dislocation. Bone injury and subtle articular damage characteristic of incipient CN are difficult to visualize with planar radiographs. As a result, CN often progresses until more serious, clinically obvious events occur, contributing to increased risk of ulceration, infection, amputation, and death.
The overall purpose of this research was to develop methods using volumetric quantitative computed tomography: vQCT) to …
The Impact Of Biomass Fuels On Flame Structure And Pollutant Formation During Biomass Cofiring Combustion, Melissa Lauren Holtmeyer
The Impact Of Biomass Fuels On Flame Structure And Pollutant Formation During Biomass Cofiring Combustion, Melissa Lauren Holtmeyer
All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)
Cofiring of biomass in pulverized coal boilers for large-scale power generation requires that current combustion standards of stability, reliability, emission and fuel conversion efficiency are maintained and/or improved. While the properties of biomass fuels are highly variable and can differ significantly from that of coal, in general biomass fuels have greater volatile matter content and larger particle size. The larger size is due to both fuel preparation methods as well as the physical properties of the biomass material. These two characteristics significantly impact the structure of the volatile flame, which is the zone dominated by the combustion of volatiles in …
Natural Killer Cell Recruitment And Activation Following Orthopoxviral Infection, Melissa Anne Pak-Wittel
Natural Killer Cell Recruitment And Activation Following Orthopoxviral Infection, Melissa Anne Pak-Wittel
All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)
The orthopoxviridae are large, complex DNA viruses with important historical and clinical significance. Members of this genus encode numerous proteins known to subvert the immune response to infection, providing a useful system to probe required host responses for resistance and survival. Natural killer: NK) cells provide an essential innate response to infection through direct lysis of infected cells and cytokine production. The innate anti-viral response following infection is associated with NK cell population expansion in draining LNs, where they are normally a rare population. We have identified mechanisms underlying NK cell expansion following orthopoxviral infection and have examined viral inhibition …
Redox Reactions Influencing Lead Concentrations In Drinking Water: Formation And Dissolution Of Lead(Iv) Oxide And Impact Of Galvanic Corrosion, Yin Wang

Antioch University Dissertations & Theses
Adolescence is a crucial developmental period in one's life. Unfortunately, our nation's youth are afflicted by high rates of risky behavior and psychiatric disorders that impact their ability for a successful future. Research indicates that school-based preventative social-emotional learning (SEL) programs can play a large role in improving the lives of adolescents. Despite this, few documented SEL program evaluations have examined their applicability to the fast growing Latino population. Latinos have been identified as more vulnerable to the problems among our youth than any other group. Identifying SEL programs that hold potential for decreasing these vulnerabilities is critical. Additionally, SEL …

Antioch University Dissertations & Theses
This dissertation describes a tele-health follow-up program designed to attend to the problem of noncompliance in the process of health-behavior change after formal Cardiac Rehabilitation treatment at a southern New Hampshire community hospital. Cardiac Rehabilitation treatment encompassing lifestyle behavior change is associated with a significant reduction in morbidity and mortality in individuals with Coronary Heart Disease. However, evidence that adherence to lifestyle behavior change recommendations diminishes significantly within six months of treatment suggests that noncompliance is a significant barrier to the secondary prevention of a disease with prodigious consequences. Accumulating evidence that Cardiac Rehabilitation treatment encompassing extended duration of contact …

Next, the project applies a systems-based program evaluation model (Wasserman, 2010) to a rite …
Therapeutic Riding: Effects On Emotional Well-Being In Adults, Jamie L. Lucas
Therapeutic Riding: Effects On Emotional Well-Being In Adults, Jamie L. Lucas
Antioch University Dissertations & Theses
Therapeutic interventions with horses are increasing and utilized to treat a number of ailments, including psychological ones. Despite the growth of these interventions, there has been little research performed, particularly quantitative, to determine efficacy. One proposed benefit of therapeutic riding, a particular type of intervention involving horses, is that it enhances or improves emotional well-being. This construct has been poorly defined and operationalized in the literature. The current study sought to operationalize and measure emotional well-being using a multidimensional model. Three proposed sub-domains of emotional well-being: positive affect, life satisfaction, and self-esteem were measured in adults prior to and after …
Comparing Static-99 Scores Of Incarcerated White, Black, And Latino Sex Offenders, Michele O. Waldron
Comparing Static-99 Scores Of Incarcerated White, Black, And Latino Sex Offenders, Michele O. Waldron
Antioch University Dissertations & Theses
Risk assessments contribute to sentencing and parole decisions, and thus are among the highest stakes assessments in the mental health field. The Static-99 has become a standard element of risk assessments for sex offenders, yet its norms and predictive accuracy have been established primarily with Caucasian samples, while the incarcerated population is disproportionately minority. Scoring of the Static-99 depends heavily on history of criminal offenses; if patterns of offenses differ along ethnic lines, the possibility that offense history should be understood to have ethnically-specific predictive validity (that is, the predictive significance of a given factor differs by ethnicity) becomes more …

Hoof Prints For Healing: An Equine-Assisted Therapy Program For A Unique School, Alison M. Roy
Antioch University Dissertations & Theses
The unique and meaningful relationship that can develop between humans and horses has been well documented for centuries. More recently a hypothesis has emerged that humans can improve self-concept and social competence from having a horse in their lives. To date, few studies have empirically explored this hypothesis. The hypothesized social and emotional benefits of interacting with horses have inspired Equine-Assisted Therapy (EAT) programs which utilize horses in goal-directed treatment. EAT programs have been shown to be especially effective for socially and emotionally disadvantaged children and youth. In the current project, the author created an EAT program for the socially …
