Intelligent Analysis Of Utilization Of Special Purpose Machines For Drilling Operations, Majid Tolouei Rad
Intelligent Analysis Of Utilization Of Special Purpose Machines For Drilling Operations, Majid Tolouei Rad
Research outputs 2012
Drilling and drilling-related operations constitute more than 60% of all machining processes in manufacturing industries. Consequently, it is important to know how to perform these operations properly. With availability of many machining processes capable of performing drilling operations sometimes it is difficult to decide which process would result in a higher profit or a lower unit cost for a given task. Due to increasing global competition, manufacturing industries are now more concerned with their productivity and are more sensitive than ever to their investments with respect to flexibility and efficiency of production equipment (Boothroyd and Knight, 2005, Wecka and Staimer, …
Biomedical Image Signal Processing For Reflection-Based Imaging, Paul Jansz, Steven Richardson, Graham Wild, Steven Hinckley
Biomedical Image Signal Processing For Reflection-Based Imaging, Paul Jansz, Steven Richardson, Graham Wild, Steven Hinckley
Research outputs 2012
Optical coherence tomography (OCT), ultrasound and other reflection based biomedical imaging technologies involve image signal processing that is primarily a filtering, digitizing and summing process so that the tissue cross-section can be visualized. In particular, in OCT, a series of adjacent one dimensional in-vivo axial interferograms (A-scan) are summed to form a two dimensional (B-scan) reflection map or reflectogram. Further graphical combinations can add adjacent B-scan together to form three dimensional C-scans. A physician can make a subjective interpretation and evaluation from the B and/or C-scans that may lead to actions impacting on the patient’s prognosis. More objective information can …
Security Specialists Are From Mars; Healthcare Practitioners Are From Venus: The Case For A Community-Of-Practice Approach To Security Architectures For Healthcare, Elizabeth Coles-Kemp, Patricia Williams
Security Specialists Are From Mars; Healthcare Practitioners Are From Venus: The Case For A Community-Of-Practice Approach To Security Architectures For Healthcare, Elizabeth Coles-Kemp, Patricia Williams
Research outputs 2012
Information security is a necessary requirement of information sharing in the healthcare environment. Research shows that the application of security in this setting is sometimes subject to work-arounds where healthcare practitioners feel forced to incorporate practices that they have not had an input into and with which they have not engaged with. This can result in a sense of security practitioners and healthcare practitioners being culturally very different in their approach to information systems. As a result such practices do not constitute part of their community of practice nor their identity. In order to respond to this, systems designers typically …
Cloud Security: A Case Study In Telemedicine, Michael Johnstone
Cloud Security: A Case Study In Telemedicine, Michael Johnstone
Research outputs 2012
Security as part of requirements engineering is now seen as an essential part of systems development in several modern methodologies. Unfortunately, medical systems are one domain where security is seen as an impediment to patient care and not as an essential part of a system. Cloud computing may offer a seamless way to allow medical data to be transferred from patient to medical practitioners, whilst maintaining security requirements. This paper uses a case study to investigate the use of cloud computing in a mobile application for Parkinson Disease. It was found that functionality took precedence over security requirements and standards.

Building Patient Trust In Electronic Health Records, Helen Cripps, Craig Standing
Research outputs 2012
While electronic medical records have the potential to vastly improve a patient’s health care, their introduction also raises new and complex security and privacy issues. The challenge of preserving what patients’ believe as their privacy in the context of the introduction of the Personally Controlled Electronic Health Record (PCEHR), into the multi-layered and decentralised Australian health system is discussed. Based on a number of European case studies the paper outlines the institutional measures for privacy and security that have been put in place, and compares them with the current status in Australia. The implementation of the PCEHR has not been …

A Technical Guide To Designing And Implementing Effective Web Surveys, Gregory Baatard
Research outputs 2012
: The Internet is becoming an increasingly prominent medium for the administration of surveys. Although individual findings vary, the major‐ ity of the literature agrees that the appropriateness and response rates of web surveys is expected to rise in the future as we enter a generation of “digital natives” and mail‐based communication becomes increasingly an‐ tiquated. Just about every aspect and tenet of traditional survey metho‐ dology has received attention in academic literature, positioning it as one of the most mature data collection techniques and a mainstay in all areas of research. While much of this accumulated knowledge is applicable …

Load-Bearing Capacity Of A Footing Resting On The Fly Ash Slope With Multi-Layer Reinforcements, K Gill, A Choudhary, J Jha, Sanjay Shukla
Load-Bearing Capacity Of A Footing Resting On The Fly Ash Slope With Multi-Layer Reinforcements, K Gill, A Choudhary, J Jha, Sanjay Shukla
Research outputs 2012
In several parts of the world, the disposal of waste materials like fly ash is a challenging task. The applications of fly ash as structural fills in foundations is one of the best solutions to disposal problems, because they can be used in large volumes in such application. There may be difficulty due to poor load-bearing capacity of fly ash, especially when footings rest on the top of the fly ash fill slope; but inclusion of polymeric reinforcements as horizontal sheets within the fill may be advantageous in improving the load-bearing capacity of reinforced fly ash slope. The aim of …
Work Integrated Learning And Business Education: A Legitimate Reverse Mapping Approach?, David Holloway, Donell Holloway
Work Integrated Learning And Business Education: A Legitimate Reverse Mapping Approach?, David Holloway, Donell Holloway
Research outputs 2012
This paper investigates whether work integrated learning (WIL) can be effectively implemented by using students existing workplace experiences (full-time or part-time). Students had to be in a work placement as a precondition for unit enrolment. The learning outcomes focussed on the ‘authenticity’ and relevance of University based learning when mapped against students ‘real world’ work experiences. Students were asked to reassess, question and integrate their individual (and collective) work-based experiences and acquired ‘real life’ knowledge against their business-based university learning. Students concluded that the learning topics had provided critical and personally useful insights into their own and the wider work …

Singapore, Diversification Theory And The Global Financial Crisis (Gfc), Ian Austin
Research outputs 2012
Since independence in 1965, Singapore has grown rich by opening its borders and encouraging Multi-National Enterprises (MNEs) to call the small city state home. However, the Asian financial crisis (1997-08), which saw Singapore experience its first significant economic downturn in decades, led to a change in direction with economic public policy being directed towards achieving strategic diversification of the national economy. This paper will examine how the 2007-09 Global finance crisis (GFC) exposed Singapore’s uber form of economic diversification - financial sector internationalisation, multinational enterprise (MNE) strategic engagement, biotechnology and medical research and so on - as being incapable of …

Research outputs 2012
Transformational games are digital computer and video applications purposefully designed to create engaging and immersive learning environments for delivering specified learning goals, outcomes and experiences. The virtual world of a transformational game becomes the social environment within which learning occurs as an outcome of the complex interaction of persons and digital resources. Engaging individuals with learning in these societal situations means concepts and skills are connected to the context and remain a powerful tool for decision making and problem solving in the world. Yet, a range of barriers need to be overcome to make a game effective for its educational …

Real-Time Evolutionary Learning Of Cooperative Predator-Prey Strategies, Mark Wittkamp, Luigi Barone, Philip Hingston, Lyndon While
Research outputs 2012
Despite games often being used as a testbed for new computational intelligence techniques, the majority of artificial intelligence in commercial games is scripted. This means that the computer agents are non-adaptive and often inherently exploitable because of it. In this paper, we describe a learning system designed for team strategy development in a real time multi-agent domain. We test our system in a prey and predators domain, evolving adaptive team strategies for the predators in real time against a single prey opponent. Our learning system works by continually training and updating the predator strategies, one at a time for a …

Comparison Of Ohs Course Accreditation Procedures In Australia, Sue Reed, Jane Whitelaw
Research outputs 2012
As OHS professional bodies have moved or are moving towards professional certification of their members, the need for accredited programs of study has developed. This move has been prompted by the requirement of the certification boards for the applicant to demonstrate that they have the minimum knowledge required to work at a professional level. The AIOH has had a course accreditation procedure for over 20 years as discussed by Whitelaw and Reed (2011) which has been well recognised by the profession, but until 2009 only one course had been accredited. In the last two years the AIOH has revised its …

Noise Suppression In Unshielded Magnetocardiography: Least-Mean Squared Algorithm Versus Genetic Algorithm, Valentina Tiporlini, Hoang Nguyen, Kamal Alameh
Research outputs 2012
This paper discusses adaptive noise cancellation in magnetocardiographic systems within unshielded environment using two algorithms, namely, the Least-Mean Squared (LMS) algorithm and the Genetic Algorithm (GA). Simulation results show that the GA algorithm outperforms the LMS algorithm in extracting a weak heart signal from a much-stronger magnetic noise, with a signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of -35.8 dB. The GA algorithm displays an improvement in SNR of 37.4 dB and completely suppressing the noise sources at 60Hz and at low frequencies; while the LMS algorithm exhibits an improvement in SNR of 33 dB and noisier spectrum at low frequencies. The GA algorithm …

Science Or Experience; What Is More Relevant ?, Kenneth Fowle, Hadyn Green
Research outputs 2012
It is very important that when we use science to determine the validity of evidence or information that it is done in a manner that is acceptable to the scientific community and the legal community, but what happens when “experience” is used. The use of forensic practitioners to provide „expert‟ evidence and opinion must meet the Daubert/Frye and now Kumho tests. This paper will endeavour to demonstrate .what is best for a practitioner to have and what does the judiciary require for „expert‟ evidence to be accepted? Science and/or Experience, what is more relevant? Evidence and the Courts depend upon …

Metal-Semiconductor-Metal Photodetector With Enhanced Te-Polarization Transmission, Ayman Karar, Chee Leong Tan, Kamal Alameh, Yong Lee, Ampalavanapillai Nirmalathas
Research outputs 2012
In this paper, we use the finite difference time-domain (FDTD) method to optimize the TE-polarized light transmission of a metal-semiconductor-metal photodetector (MSMPD) employing a dielectric waveguide on top of metal nano-gratings. Simulation results demonstrate that the funneling transmission of the TE-polarized light through the nanoslit of the structure is highly dependent on the structure geometries such as the waveguide and nano-grating heights. We also demonstrate that adding a dielectric waveguide layer on top of the nano-metal grating supports both the TM- and TE polarizations, and enhances the light transmission for TE-polarization approximately 3-times.

An Examination Of The Effects Of Exchange Rates On Australia's Inbound Tourism Growth: A Multivariate Conditional Volatility Approach, Ghialy Choy Lee Yap
Research outputs 2012
The appreciation of the Australian dollar has been a concern as Australia has become less competitive compared to neighbouring countries. This paper investigates to what extent exchange rates could adversely affect Australia's inbound tourism and whether volatility in exchange rates could increase the uncertainty in international tourist arrivals to Australia. The study is based on nine countries of origin, namely China, India, Japan, Malaysia, New Zealand, Singapore, South Korea, the UK and the USA for the period January 1991 to January 2011. It uses multivariate conditional volatility regressions to model the time-varying conditional variances of international tourism growth and exchange …

Using Contextual Constructs Model To Frame Doctoral Research Methodology, Shirlee-Ann Knight, Donna Cross
Research outputs 2012
This paper presents a novel research model - Contextual Constructs Model (CCM) and the theory that underpins it - Contextual Constructs Theory (CCT). First developed as part of a complex project investigating user perceptions of information quality during Web-based information re-trieval, the CCM is not a single research method per se, but is a modelled research framework providing an over-arching perspective of scientific inquiry, by which a researcher is able to iden-tify multiple possible methods of study and analysis according to the identified research con-structs and their contexts. Central to CCM/CCT is that all research involves the fusion of two …

Thumbs Up To Parametric Measures Of Relative Var And Cvar In Indonesian Sectors, David Allen, Ray Boffey, Akhmad Kramadibrata, Robert Powell, Abhay Singh
Research outputs 2012
We examine relative share market risk between Indonesian sectors and how this changes during extreme market fluctuations. Ten sectors comprising the IDX Composite Index are examined over an eight-year period spanning the pre-GFC, GFC and post-GFC. Risk is measured using parametric and nonparametric Value at Risk (VaR) and Conditional Value at Risk (CVaR), which measures risk beyond VaR. In contrast to studies on most global markets, and due to relative stability in the Indonesian market, no significant differences are found in relative portfolio risk between the conditional and non-conditional measures, or between parametric and nonparametric measures. The insights are important …

Diffraction Of Digital Micromirror Device Gratings And Its Effect On Properties Of Tunable Fiber Lasers, Xiao Chen, Binbin Yan, Feijun Song, Yiquan Wang, Feng Xiao, Kamal Alameh
Research outputs 2012
A digital micromirror device (DMD) is a kind of widely used spatial light modulator. We apply DMD as wavelength selector in tunable fiber lasers. Based on the two-dimensional diffraction theory, the diffraction of DMD and its effect on properties of fiber laser parameters are analyzed in detail. The theoretical results show that the diffraction efficiency is strongly dependent upon the angle of incident light and the pixel spacing of DMD. Compared with the other models of DMDs, the 0.55 in. DMD grating is an approximate blazed state in our configuration, which makes most of the diffracted radiation concentrated into one …

Impacts Of Urbanisation On The Native Avifauna Of Perth, Western Australia, Robert A. Davis, Cheryl Gole, J Dale Roberts
Research outputs 2013
Urban development either eliminates, or severely fragments, native vegetation, and therefore alters the distribution and abundance of species that depend on it for habitat. We assessed the impact of urban development on bird communities at 121 sites in and around Perth, Western Australia. Based on data from community surveys, at least 83 % of 65 landbirds were found to be dependent, in some way, on the presence of native vegetation. For three groups of species defined by specific patterns of habitat use (bushland birds), there were sufficient data to show that species occurrences declined as the landscape changed from variegated …

A good portion of today's investigations include, at least in part, an examination of the user's web history. Although it has lost ground over the past several years, Microsoft's Internet Explorer still accounts for a large portion of the web browser market share. Most users are now aware that Internet Explorer will save browsing history, user names, passwords and form history. Consequently some users seek to eliminate these artifacts, leaving behind less evidence for examiners to discover during investigations. However, most users, and probably a good portion of examiners are unaware Automatic Crash Recovery can leave a gold mine of …

Changes In Upper Body Concentric Mean Power Output Resulting From Complex Training Emphasizing Concentric Muscle Actions, Daniel Baker
Research outputs 2012
Contrasting resistance complex (CRC) training is the alternating of sets of heavier and lighter resistances in an effort to evoke an acute increase in power output while lifting the lighter resistance. The effectiveness of CRC has been well established in elite athletes when researchers utilize an optimal manipulation of training variables but equivocal for other studies that have used a very heavy resistance to “stimulate” the neuro-muscular system. It was theorized that very heavy resistances could conceivably fatigue the processes associated with the stretch-shorten cycle (SSC). The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of CRC when utilizing …
