Does Prognosis And Socioeconomic Status Impact On Trust In Physicians? Interviews With Patients With Coronary Disease In South Australia, S Meyer, P Ward, M Jiwa

Medical Papers and Journal Articles

Objectives: There is concern across a range of healthcare settings worldwide that trust in physicians is declining. Decreased trust may lead to lesser tolerance of prognosis uncertainty and an increased demand for tests, referrals and second opinions. Literature suggests that there has been a recent cultural shift towards decreased trust in, and increased questioning of, medical advice. We investigated the impact of varying prognosis and socioeconomic status (SES) on trust in physicians, and patient questioning of medical advice.

Design: Semistructured, audio-recorded transcribed interviews were conducted. The interview schedule was developed with reference to the Health Belief Model. Interviews were conducted …

The Roadmap For A Prospective Us-Asean Fta: Legal And Geopolitical Considerations, Pasha L. Hsieh

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

This article examines the legal framework governing economic relations between the United States and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and outlines a roadmap for a US-ASEAN Free Trade Agreement (FTA). Notwithstanding ASEAN’s emerging centrality in Asian regionalism, America remains the only Pacific power that has not concluded any form of FTA with ASEAN.This article explains that limited progress in Washington’s efforts stemmed from the domestic politics of the US Trade and Investment Framework Agreement (TIFA) approach and the Myanmar dilemma. It further analyses the challenges that the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) Agreement negotiations have encountered and contends that the …

Preface, Nirmalya Kumar

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

As late as 2001, Indian outward investment was less than US $1 billion. Instead, India, like all developing countries, was actively courting foreign investment into the country. By 2006, India had reached the tipping point. For the first time, Indian outward investment of US $10 billion had outstripped foreign investment into India. The spending spree continued unabated in 2007. Indian companies arranged or concluded US $21 billion in 40 foreign investment deals in January and February of 2007 alone. Moreover, Indian foreign investment in the financial year closing 31 March 2007 exceeded the cumulative total foreign investment by Indian companies …

The Effects Of Political Connections On The Level And Value Of Cash Holdings: International Evidence, Yuanto Kusnadi, K.C. John Wei Jan 2012

The Effects Of Political Connections On The Level And Value Of Cash Holdings: International Evidence, Yuanto Kusnadi, K.C. John Wei

Research Collection School Of Accountancy

In this paper, we examine the role of political connections on corporate liquidity policies and their consequences in an international setting. We find that managers of politically connected firms have a tendency to hoard more cash than their non-connected counterparts. Moreover, presence of political connections reduces the value of cash holdings. Further analysis reveals that our main findings are more pronounced for firms in emerging markets as well as for firms in countries with weak legal protection of investors and high levels of corruption. Overall, our empirical results corroborate previous findings on the agency cost explanation for corporate cash holdings.

The Department of Homeland Security lists 19 groups of sectors as Critical Infrastructure Key Resources (CIKR) such as Water, Emergency Services, and Healthcare and Public Health (HPH). Protection of those interdependent sectors is of vital interest for the country in the event of disaster. Hospital infrastructure systems are basic HPH elements of the CIKR. Local hospitals deliver essential routine healthcare services as well as serving as frontline responders during non-routine disaster events. Currently, hospitals generally extend their routine healthcare activities for external community disaster preparedness and response services. This extension takes the form of coordination with other responders within the …

Synthesis Of A Difluorometric Cross-Membrane Molecular Probe For Studying Amphipathic Systems, Danielle Raymond Jan 2012

Synthesis Of A Difluorometric Cross-Membrane Molecular Probe For Studying Amphipathic Systems, Danielle Raymond

Theses

A surfactant is an amphiphile which consists of a hydrophobic and hydrophilic end. In nonpolar solvents containing a small amount of water surfactants can form reverse micelles. Extensive research has been done using fluorescent probes to study several properties of these amphiphilic aggregates including mechanism of formation, critical micelle concentration, aggregate number and size, nanopolarity, and viscosity. Dr. Langner's group at RIT proposed the structure of a difluorometric, ratiometric probe that can transverse the membrane of a reverse micelle created in a system of decane/water/AOT/butyl alcohol. This probe has a dansyl and a coumarin portion making it amphiphilic and could …

Polysaccharide Ecocomposite Materials: Materials: Synthesis, Characterization And Application For Removal Of Pollutants And Bacteria, Simon Duri, Bilal El-Zahab, Chieu D. Tran

Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications

A novel, simple and totally recyclable method has been developed for the synthesis of nontoxic, biocompatible and biodegradable composite materials from cellulose and chitosan. In this method, [BMIm+Cl-], an ionic liquid (IL), was used as a solvent to dissolve and synthesize the [CEL+CS] composite materials. Since the IL can be removed from the materials by washing them with water, and recovered from the washed solution, the method is totally recyclable. XRD, FTIR, NIR and SEM were used to characterize the materials and to confirm that CEL and CS were successfully regenerated by the method without any chemical transformation. More importantly, …

Mathematical Modelling Of A Low Approach Evaporative Cooling Process For Space Cooling In Buildings, Medhi Nasrabadi, Donal Finn, Ben Costelloe

Conference Papers

This paper describes a mathematical model of a low approach open evaporative cooling tower for the production of high temperature indirect cooling water (14-16°C) for use in building radiant cooling and displacement ventilation systems. There are several potential approaches to model evaporative cooling, including: the Poppe method, the Merkel method and the effectiveness-NTU (ε-NTU) method. A common assumption, applied to the Merkel and ε-NTU methods, is that the effect of change in tower water mass flow rate due to evaporation is ignored, which results in a simpler model with reduced computational requirements, but with somewhat decreasedaccuracy. In this paper, a …

Menu-Dependent Emotions And Self-Control, Joaquín Gómez-Miñambres, Eric Schniter Jan 2012

Menu-Dependent Emotions And Self-Control, Joaquín Gómez-Miñambres, Eric Schniter

ESI Working Papers

We study a dynamic model of self-control where the history of one’s decisions (understood as emotions) has in‡uence on subsequent decision making. We propose that effort and regret are emotions produced by previous decisions to either resist or yield to temptation, respectively. When recalled, these emotions affect an individual'’s preferences, in turn affecting self-control decision at a particular point in time. Our model provides a uni…ed explanation for several empirical regularities puzzling economists and cognitive scientists. We explain non-stationary consumption paths characterized by compensatory indulgence and restraint cycles, why the amplitude of consumption cycles increases with foresight and decreases …

Health Sciences & Kinesiology: Faculty Publications

Plyometric research in the upper extremity is limited, with the effects of open-chain plyometric exercises being studied most. Kinematic and ground reaction force data concerning closed-chain upper extremity plyometrics has yet to be examined. Twenty-one recreationally active male subjects performed four variations of plyometric push-ups in a counterbalanced order. These included box drop push-ups from 3.8 cm, 7.6 cm, 11.4 cm heights, and clap push-ups. Kinematics of the trunk, dominant extremity and both hands were collected to examine peak flight, elbow flexion at ground contact, elbow displacement, and hand separation. Additionally peak vertical ground reaction force was measured under the …

Role Of Extracytoplasmic Function Sigma Factors In Porphyromonas Gingivalis, Suhasini Yanamandra Sai Jan 2012

Role Of Extracytoplasmic Function Sigma Factors In Porphyromonas Gingivalis, Suhasini Yanamandra Sai

Theses and Dissertations

Porphyromonas gingivalis is a major etiological agent that is responsible for the cause and progression of periodontal diseases. The bacterium is exposed to various environmental conditions and oxidative stress conditions while it is in the oral cavity. So, P. gingivalis should have an efficient regulatory system in order to adjust and survive in the oral cavity. But little is known about the regulatory mechanisms that help the bacteria to survive in the oral cavity. So, it is essential to understand and characterize these regulatory mechanisms. The response and adaptation of P. gingivalis to environmental stress conditions occur at the level …

Designing Direct And Indirect Factor Xa Inhibitors, Rami Al-Horani Jan 2012

Designing Direct And Indirect Factor Xa Inhibitors, Rami Al-Horani

Theses and Dissertations

Anticoagulants are the basis for treatment and prevention of thrombotic diseases. The currently available medicines are associated with a wide range of adverse reactions that mandates developing new anticoagulants. Several lines of evidence support the superiority of factor Xa (FXa) as a promising target to develop novel anticoagulants. This work focuses on the design of direct and indirect FXa inhibitors using an interdisciplinary approach. As indirect FXa inhibitors, a focused library of tetrasulfated N–arylacyl tetrahydroisoquinoline (THIQ) nonsaccharide allosteric antithrombin activators was designed, synthesized, and biochemically evaluated to establish their structure–activity relationship (SAR). An N–arylacyl THIQ analog having carboxylate at position–3, …

Investigating The Role Of Α6 And Α4 Containing Neuronal Nicotinic Acetylcholine Receptors In Nicotine And Cocaine Conditioned Place Preference Tests In Mice., Sarah Sanjakdar

Theses and Dissertations

Neuronal nicotinic acetylcholine receptors modulate both cholinergic and non-cholinergic synaptic transmission. Our research concerns α6 and α4 neuronal nicotinic subunits because they often co-assemble with the β2 subunit, which has abundant expression in the CNS and previous work has demonstrated that β2* nAChRs are involved in nicotine and cocaine reward. α6β2* and α4β2* nAChRs are highly expressed in midbrain, which is known to be critical for the incentive salience associated with natural and artificial (drug) reward. Our goal was to assess the role of α6β2* and α4β2* nAChRs in nicotine and cocaine reward using an unbiased conditioned place preference (CPP) …

Of Form And Function: Lockean Political Philosophy And Mass Tort, Jeffrey C. Sindelar Jr. Jan 2012

Of Form And Function: Lockean Political Philosophy And Mass Tort, Jeffrey C. Sindelar Jr.

Nebraska Law Review

The efficacy of tort law in the United States has been widely criticized by academics and judges. In the mass tort context, a great deal of criticism has focused on the inefficiencies created by individual claim autonomy—the notion that every person is entitled to his or her own day in court. Attempts to individually adjudicate mass tort cases, such as asbestos and other mass-exposure cases, have clogged court dockets and substantially burdened the civil justice system. Some scholars argue that the process of individually litigating mass tort claims and allowance of opt-out rights in class actions lead to suboptimal investment …

Health Cover(Age)Ing, Rebecca L. Rausch Jan 2012

Health Cover(Age)Ing, Rebecca L. Rausch

Nebraska Law Review

Though uneven costs based on an arbitrarily selected physical feature might seem discriminatory, health insurance fat taxes are perfectly legal under federal law. The Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA) and Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 (Title VII) generally do not protect people because of their fatness. The recently enacted Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2010 (ACA) also allows, and encourages, this new regime to continue, under the guise of wellness programs. Ironically, despite the name, these programs do not necessarily measure wellness, nor are they required to do so. The legality of …
