The Right To Strike And Its Possible Conflict With Other Fundamental Rights Of The People In The United States, Charles B. Craver

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

Although the right to strike is not constitutionally protected in the U.S., it is protected for private sector workers under Section 7 of the National Labor Relations Act as concerted activity for mutual aid and protection. Federal employees and most state and local government employees do not have the right to strike, but several states permit work stoppages by non-essential personnel. Most collective bargaining agreements contain no-strike clauses forbidding work stoppages during the term of such contracts. Sympathy strikes by private sector workers supporting strikes by employees bargaining over new contract terms are usually protected as concerted activity for mutual …

Matching Political Contributions, Spencer A. Overton Jan 2012

Matching Political Contributions, Spencer A. Overton

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

Traditional public financing of campaigns is in trouble. Successful candidates have increasingly rejected public financing because it provides inadequate funding and limits candidate spending. November 2012 was the first general election in which presidential candidates from both major parties rejected public financing since the inception of the program. The U.S. Supreme Court recently issued a decision that undermined traditional public financing systems. If existing programs are not revamped soon public financing may be off the public radar for decades, as budget deficits make antiquated public financing programs ripe targets for spending cuts. This Essay proposes a paradigm shift. Public financing …

Comparison Of Micro- And Nanoscale Fe+3-Containing (Hematite) Particles For Their Toxicological Properties In Human Lung Cells In Vitro, Kunal Bhattacharya, Eik Hoffmann, Roel Schins, Jens Boertz, Eva-Maria Prantl, Gerrit Alink, Hugh Byrne, Thomas Kuhlbusch, Qamar Rahman, Hartmut Wiggers, Christof Schulz, Elke Dopp

Articles

The specific properties of nanoscale particles, large surface-to-mass ratio and highly reactive surfaces, have increased their commercial application in many fields. However, the same properties are also important for the interaction and bio-accumulation of the non-/biodegradable nanoscale particles in a biological system and are a cause for concern. Hematite (α-Fe2O3), being a mineral form of Fe(III) oxide, is one of the most used iron oxides besides magnetite. The aim of our study was the characterization and comparison of biophysical reactivity and toxicological effects of α-Fe2O3 nano- (d < 100 nm) and microscale (d < 5 μm) particles in human lung cells. Our study demonstrates that the surface reactivity of nanoscale α-Fe2O3 differs to that of microscale particles with respect to the state of agglomeration, radical formation potential, and cellular toxicity. The presence of proteins in culture medium and agglomeration were found to affect the catalytic properties of the hematite nano- and microscale particles. Both the nano- and microscale α-Fe2O3 particles were actively taken up by human lung cells in vitro, although, they were not found in the nuclei and mitochondria. …

An Examination Of Women’S Representation And Participation In Bicycle Advisory Committees In California, Hilary Nixon, C. Deluca

Faculty Publications, Urban and Regional Planning

In the United States, women bicycle at significantly lower rates than men. One method of remedying this disparity is to ensure that women are engaged in bicycle planning and policy making through, for example, participation in bicycle advisory committees (BACs). No research has been conducted on women’s representation and participation in these committees. This study attempts to fill that gap by examining women’s membership levels in and experiences serving on California bicycle advisory committees and bicycle/pedestrian advisory committees. In addition, we explore some of the barriers to participation faced by female cyclists. A survey of 42 committees revealed that women …

Assessing Numeracy In Oncology: The Role Of Patient Perception And Preferences, Jennifer Kilkus Poe

Theses and Dissertations--Psychology

Treatment decision making (TDM) in oncology is complex. Understanding treatment information is essential for shared TDM. Research suggests many patients have low numeracy. This mixed methods study explored numeracy and experience with numbers in a sample of individuals diagnosed with follicular lymphoma. Participants completed questionnaires (N = 32) and interviews (N = 20) assessing numeracy, decisional conflict and regret, and number preference. Results suggest that mean objective numeracy was relatively high, and most reported high confidence in numerical ability. Most participants preferred to receive numbers during the TDM process. There was no relationship between numeracy and decision outcomes. Future research …

Using The Scrambled Sentences Test To Examine Relationships Between Cognitive Bias, Thought Suppression And Borderline Personality Features, Paul Jefferson Geiger Jan 2012

Using The Scrambled Sentences Test To Examine Relationships Between Cognitive Bias, Thought Suppression And Borderline Personality Features, Paul Jefferson Geiger

Theses and Dissertations--Psychology

Cognitive bias and thought suppression are two maladaptive patterns of thinking that have been associated with borderline personality disorder (BPD). Negative cognitive biases related to BPD include thoughts that they are bad, powerless, or vulnerable and that the world is dangerous. Thought suppression is a maladaptive emotion regulation strategy where unwanted thoughts are intentionally pushed out of one’s consciousness. However, previous research has connected thought suppression and cognitive biases to BPD only via self-report measures. The present study examined whether a laboratory task meant to measure cognitive bias and thought suppression (Scrambled Sentences Test) would predict BPD features over and …

Do High School Peer Crowd Affiliation And Peer Alcohol Use Predict Alcohol Use During College?, Jacqueline A. Bonsu Jan 2012

Do High School Peer Crowd Affiliation And Peer Alcohol Use Predict Alcohol Use During College?, Jacqueline A. Bonsu

Theses and Dissertations--Psychology

Peer crowd affiliation (PCA) has been linked to alcohol use in adolescents, with patterns varying by crowd. However, a comprehensive examination of how peers influence college students’ behaviors, especially with regards to PCA, is lacking. The current study seeks to replicate and extend findings from Barber, Eccles, and Stone (2001) by examining whether high school PCA is associated with average weekly drinking and problematic drinking in a sample of college freshman, including friends’ drinking as a potential mediator and susceptibility to peer influence as a potential moderator. As existing research has found that close friends’ drinking predicts own drinking, peer …

Shame And Borderline Personality Features: The Potential Mediating Role Of Anger And Anger Rumination, Jessica R. Peters Jan 2012

Shame And Borderline Personality Features: The Potential Mediating Role Of Anger And Anger Rumination, Jessica R. Peters

Theses and Dissertations--Psychology

Two prominent emotions in borderline personality disorder (BPD) are anger and shame. Rumination has been demonstrated to occur in response to shame and to escalate anger, and rumination, particularly anger rumination, has been shown to predict BPD symptoms. The present study examined whether one way that shame leads to the features of BPD is via increased anger and anger rumination. A sample of 823 undergraduates completed self-report measures of global and situational shame, trait- level anger, anger'rumination, and BPD features. A structural equation model was constructed using these measures. The hypothesized model of shame to anger and anger rumination to …
