Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

Life-Patterns on the Periphery: A Humanities Base for Development Imperatives and their Application in the Chicago City-Region is informed by the need to bring diverse fields together in order to tackle issues related to the contemporary city-region. By honouring the long-term economic, social, political, and ecological imperatives that form the fabric of healthy, productive, sustainable communities, it becomes possible to setup political structures and citizen will to develop distinct places that result in the overlapping of citizen life patterns, setting the stage for citizen action and interaction.

Based in humanities scholarship, the four imperatives act as checks on each other …

Invasion Patterns Of Emerald Ash Borer And European Earthworms In Forested Ecosystems, Lindsey M. Shartell Jan 2012

Invasion Patterns Of Emerald Ash Borer And European Earthworms In Forested Ecosystems, Lindsey M. Shartell

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

Invasive and exotic species present a serious threat to the health and sustainability of natural ecosystems. These species often benefit from anthropogenic activities that aid their introduction and dispersal. This dissertation focuses on invasion dynamics of the emerald ash borer, native to Asia, and European earthworms. These species have shown detrimental impacts in invaded forest ecosystems across the Great Lakes region, and continue to spread via human-assisted long distance dispersal and by natural modes of dispersal into interior forests from areas of introduction. Successful forest management requires that the impact and effect of invasive species be considered and incorporated into …

Assessing Success Of Forest Restoration Efforts In Degraded Montane Cloud Forests In Southern Mexico, Rocio Elizabeth Jimenez Vazquez

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

Montane cloud forests are home to great biodiversity. However, non-sustainable anthropogenic activities have led to the loss of forest cover in southern Mexico. Increasing conservation, restoration and sustainable use of forest resources prevents the loss of cloud forests. In this study, success of forest restoration was evaluated in a degraded forest of Highlands Chiapas. The goal of this study was to assess the structure and composition of native tree species. We evaluated vegetation composition at three sites that had undergone enrichment plantings. Floristic composition and structure of the herbaceous, seedling, sapling, and overstory layers were measured. A total of sixty-six …

Restoration Of Forest Wetlands: Case Studies In Michigan And Finland, Laura C. Kangas

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

Forested wetlands throughout the world are valuable habitats; especially in relatively species-poor northern regions, they can be considered biological hotspots. Unfortunately, these areas have been degraded and destroyed. In recent years, however, the biological importance of wetlands has been increasingly recognized, resulting in the desire to restore disturbed habitats or create in place of destroyed ones. Restoration work is taking place across the globe in a diversity of wetland types, and research must be conducted to determine successful techniques. As a result, two studies of the effects of wetland restoration and creation were conducted in forested wetlands in northern Michigan …

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

Small-scale village woodlots of less than 0.5ha are the preferred use of land for local farmers with extra land in the village of Isangati, a small community located in the southern highlands of Tanzania. Farmers view woodlots as lucrative investments that do not involve intensive labor or time. The climate is ideal for the types of trees grown and the risks are minimal with no serious threats from insects, fires, thieves, or grazing livestock. It was hypothesized that small-scale village woodlot owners were not maximizing timber outputs with their current timber stand management and harvesting techniques. Personal interviews were conducted …

Automatic Food Intake Assessment Using Camera Phones, Fanyu Kong

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

Obesity is becoming an epidemic phenomenon in most developed countries. The fundamental cause of obesity and overweight is an energy imbalance between calories consumed and calories expended. It is essential to monitor everyday food intake for obesity prevention and management. Existing dietary assessment methods usually require manually recording and recall of food types and portions. Accuracy of the results largely relies on many uncertain factors such as user's memory, food knowledge, and portion estimations. As a result, the accuracy is often compromised. Accurate and convenient dietary assessment methods are still blank and needed in both population and research societies.

Delineating Sexual Dangerousness, Fredrick E. Vars Jan 2012

Delineating Sexual Dangerousness, Fredrick E. Vars

Articles

Only “dangerous” individuals may be indefinitely detained. Is a one percent chance of a future crime clear and convincing evidence of dangerousness? For sex offenders, fear and uncertainty in case law leave open this passage to limbo. This Article closes it. The due process balancing test used to evaluate standards of proof provides the framework. This Article explains the relationship between the standard of proof and the definition of “dangerous” and argues that only an approach combining the two is consistent with the Constitution. Applying decision theory with assumptions favoring the government, this Article calculates a minimum likelihood of recidivism …

Standing Lessons: What We Can Learn When Conservative Plaintiffs Lose Under Article Iii Standing Doctrine, Heather Elliott Jan 2012

Standing Lessons: What We Can Learn When Conservative Plaintiffs Lose Under Article Iii Standing Doctrine, Heather Elliott

Articles

The Supreme Court's Article III standing doctrine has plagued liberal groups for nearly forty years Recently however the doctrine has blocked a number of conservative lawsuits opposing gay marriage the 2010 health care law and the expansion of federal funding for stemcell research What can we learn from these cases Because contemporary criticisms of standing doctrine have usually come from the left and defenses from the right it is commonplace to associate arguments for broad standing with leftwing political agendas But as some scholars have shown older versions of standing doctrine served liberal purposes in the New Deal and its …

Sociology Faculty Works

Mixed methods research is increasingly being promoted in the health sciences as a way to gain more comprehensive understandings of how social processes and individual behaviours shape human health. Mixed methods research most commonly combines qualitative and quantitative data collection and analysis strategies. Often, integrating findings from multiple methods is assumed to confirm or validate the findings from one method with the findings from another, seeking convergence or agreement between methods. Cases in which findings from different methods are congruous are generally thought of as ideal, whilst conflicting findings may, at first glance, appear problematic. However, the latter situation provides …

Signal Extraction From The Philippine National Accounts Statistics Using Arima Model-Based Methodology, Cesar C. Rufino

DLSU Business & Economics Review

The state of the art in signal extraction gradually evolved from the use of a mechanical form of moving average filters to the present sophisticated model-based techniques capable of performing automatic modeling and signal extraction involving hundreds or even thousands of time series in one production run. The leading edge of technology is being shared by two ARIMA model-based systems: ARIMA X12 of the US Bureau of Census and the twin programs TRAMO-SEATS developed at the Bank of Spain. These specialized expert systems have been adopted by most statistical agencies of advanced OECD countries and the European community. The Philippines …

The Role Of Education And Government Sponsored Programs In Limiting Family Size In Pasay, Eastern Samar, And Agusan Del Sur¹, John Paolo R. Rivera, Kurt Gerrard T. See Jan 2012

The Role Of Education And Government Sponsored Programs In Limiting Family Size In Pasay, Eastern Samar, And Agusan Del Sur¹, John Paolo R. Rivera, Kurt Gerrard T. See

DLSU Business & Economics Review

The socio-economic quandaries of rapid population growth and poverty have always gone hand in hand. It is evident that the poorest households are those who have a larger family size. Consequently, these households have to support more people with fewer resources. As such, one of the solutions to address the issue is the Reproductive Heath (RH) Bill, which is highly condemned by the Roman Catholic Church (RCC). For this reason, this study will explore other possibilities to limit family size by highlighting whether the availability of water, electricity, decent housing, sustainable income, employment, and other welfare enhancing programs limits family …

Beyond Best Practices For Legal Education: Reflections On Cultural Awareness - Exploring The Issues In Creating A Law School And Classroom Culture, Antoinette M. Sedillo Lopez

Faculty Scholarship

If law schools are to prepare students for the reality of practice, it is useful to help students become aware of cultural issues that can affect client representation by examining the culture that the law school creates. The culture created by faculty, students, administration, and staff will affect the law student's acculturation as a legal professional as well as the law student's psychological well-being. This issue was addressed briefly in Best Practices for Legal Education (Best Practices), but not developed. This essay explores some of the challenges and opportunities of bringing cross-cultural issues into a law school classroom and some …

R2p= Mdgs: Implementing The Responsibility To Protect Through The Millennium Development Goals, Jennifer Moore Jan 2012

R2p= Mdgs: Implementing The Responsibility To Protect Through The Millennium Development Goals, Jennifer Moore

Faculty Scholarship

This essay is a peaceful call to arms based on the understanding that an essential way to fight the most egregious and widespread human rights abuses is through a broad-spectrum approach to human security grounded in the Millennium Development Goals and a new, non-military, understanding of humanitarian intervention. The responsibility to protect, often cited as a justification for military force to stop genocide, crimes against humanity, and other widespread human rights abuses, is better seen as a commitment by all nations to strengthen their own social welfare and human rights systems, and for those nations with more resources to assist …

Environmental Law, Civil Rights And Sustainability: Three Frameworks For Environmental Justice, Eileen Gauna Jan 2012

Environmental Law, Civil Rights And Sustainability: Three Frameworks For Environmental Justice, Eileen Gauna

Faculty Scholarship

This article focuses on the domestic context, where the issues have more concretely crystallized around viewing environmental justice issues from a civil rights framework, and also from a competing environmental law framework. The article will begin with a discussion of the limitations of each of these frameworks, and will then explore the current "disconnect" between these two models, ending with an exploration of how the principles of sustainability fit into the picture. As to the latter point, sustainability is a double-edged sword. It might be used to maintain the inequity of the status quo; and, particularly in light of climate …
