Mechanism Of Action Studies On A New Class Of Anticancer Nucleosides, Megan E. Browning Nov 2012

Mechanism Of Action Studies On A New Class Of Anticancer Nucleosides, Megan E. Browning

Theses and Dissertations

We have completed mechanism of action studies on a new class of anticancer nucleosides typified by a novel nucleoside discovered in our lab, MAP-870. In order to study the mechanism of MAP-870, several experiments were completed on a colorectal adenocarcinoma cell line, HT-29, including trypan blue cell count, sulforhodamine B assays, flow cytometry of cell cycle, propidium iodide incorporation, and phosphatidylserine externalization, Caspase-Glo3/7 assays, DNA fragmentation gel, cyclophilin A release gel, PAMPA, and confocal imaging. Sulforhodamine B assays show that MAP-870 does indeed cause growth inhibition and cell death in the model tested. PAMPA assays show that MAP-870 does not …

Arsenic, Cadmium And Neuron Specific Enolase (Enolase-2, Enolase-Gamma), Expression In Breast And Bladder Cancer, Maureen Achey Soh Nov 2012

Arsenic, Cadmium And Neuron Specific Enolase (Enolase-2, Enolase-Gamma), Expression In Breast And Bladder Cancer, Maureen Achey Soh

Theses and Dissertations

Arsenic and cadmium (Cd+2) are well established environmental pollutants. Human exposure to arsenite (As+3) and Cd +2 have been associated with many types of cancers including skin, bladder, liver, prostate, stomach and lung. Epidemiological studies have associated Cd+2 exposure with breast cancer development while As +3 has not been directly associated with breast cancer development, although both As+3 and Cd+2 have been implicated in estrogen receptor mediated gene transcription and endocrine disruption. In the present study, the ability of both these heavy metals to transform the immortalized human breast epithelial (MCF-10A) cell line was examined. For this purpose, the MCF-10A …

Makara Journal of Technology

Having been researched the development of thermoplastic elastomer material of polypropylene and natural rubber SIR- 20 compound with Crumb Rubber as the filler. Reinforced polypropylene with size 60 mesh with 1 mm, and the composition of the Crumb rubber (30, 40, and 50) wt%. Observed mechanical properties are tensile strength, fracture elongation, Young's modulus, tear strength and impact strength. Thermal properties are analyzed by DSC and DTA/TGA. It is acquired that for the size of 60 mesh crumb rubber tensile strength, fracture elongation, Young’s modulus, tear strength and impact strength are bigger than 1mm size. The addition of 60 mesh …

The Multiple Perspectives Of The Lived Experience Of Civil Detainment, Linda Love Nov 2012

The Multiple Perspectives Of The Lived Experience Of Civil Detainment, Linda Love

Theses and Dissertations

Civil detainment can be confusing, frustrating, and scary especially if the criteria for civil detainment are being applied inconsistently. A constructivist inquiry, using qualitative techniques as the primary information gathering method, was conducted to gain a better understanding about the experience of civil detainment. Twenty-five stakeholders participated in this research effort. Questions regarding the meaning of civil detainment were explored in five stakeholder groups; individuals with mental illness, families, mental health professionals, first responders and judicial professionals. Civil detainment is described as a “necessary evil” however, mandated treatment is also described as a means to restore dignity. Implications are included …

The Use Of Indicators For Unobservable Product Qualities: Inferences Based On Consumer Sorting, Matthew G. Nagler, Fredi Kronenberg, Edward J. Kennelly, Bei Jiang, Chunhui Ma Nov 2012

The Use Of Indicators For Unobservable Product Qualities: Inferences Based On Consumer Sorting, Matthew G. Nagler, Fredi Kronenberg, Edward J. Kennelly, Bei Jiang, Chunhui Ma

Publications and Research

We propose a method for measuring the conjectural errors that inexpert consumers make relative to experts in using observable product characteristics as surrogate indicators of a valued unobservable characteristic. Observations on the unobservable characteristic, available to the researcher but not consumers, are used to divide the data into high- and low-quality subsamples. Separate hedonic estimation on the subsamples enables measurement of the relative valuations and conjectures of experts and non-experts with respect to indicators under the assumption that consumers sort across quality grades based on their appraisal expertise. The method is demonstrated using a small sample of SKU-level data on …

Conformations Of Islet Amyloid Polypeptide Monomers In A Membrane Environment: Implications For Fibril Formation, Mojie Duan, Jue Fan, Shuanghong Huo Nov 2012

Conformations Of Islet Amyloid Polypeptide Monomers In A Membrane Environment: Implications For Fibril Formation, Mojie Duan, Jue Fan, Shuanghong Huo

Chemistry

The amyloid fibrils formed by islet amyloid polypeptide (IAPP) are associated with type II diabetes. One of the proposed mechanisms of the toxicity of IAPP is that it causes membrane damage. The fatal mutation of S20G human IAPP was reported to lead to early onset of type II diabetes and high tendency of amyloid formation in vitro. Characterizing the structural features of the S20G mutant in its monomeric state is experimentally difficult because of its unusually fast aggregation rate. Computational work complements experimental studies. We performed a series of molecular dynamics simulations of the monomeric state of human variants in …

Research Brief: "Health And Health Behavior Differences: U.S. Military, Veteran, And Civilian Men", Institute For Veterans And Military Families At Syracuse University

Institute for Veterans and Military Families

This brief is about the health differences between veteran men, active duty men, National Guard/Reserve men, and civilian men. In policy and practice, organizations besides the VA should expand their preventative health services and health education for veterans, and policymakers should push health and healthcare access initiatives for veterans and service members. Suggestions for future research include collecting data over time, accounting for deployment and combat experience, and adding more thorough measures of health conditions within both veterans and civilians.
