Development And Evaluation Of An Instrument To Measure Mother-Infant Togetherness After Childbirth, Carol Lawrence
Development And Evaluation Of An Instrument To Measure Mother-Infant Togetherness After Childbirth, Carol Lawrence
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
No existing measure to date captures mother-infant togetherness. A valid measure of togetherness is essential to engage in evidence-based practice, evaluate obstetric delivery models and nursing interventions, and measure the level of togetherness which promotes optimal maternal-infant outcomes. When together and in close proximity, a women and her infant have access to one another to allow for mutual caregiving or caregiving on cue. A new measure entitled the Mother-Infant Togetherness Scale (MITS) was developed based on a review of the literature and conceptual framework of Mother-Newborn Mutual Caregiving. The MITS is a 35- item instrument composed of four subscales that …
A New Semantic Similarity Join Method Using Diffusion Maps And Long String Table Attributes, Bilal Hani Hawashin
A New Semantic Similarity Join Method Using Diffusion Maps And Long String Table Attributes, Bilal Hani Hawashin
Wayne State University Dissertations
With the rapid increase of the distributed data sources, and in order to make information integration, there is a need to combine the information that refers to the same entity from different sources. However, there are no global conventions that control the format of the data, and it is impractical to impose such global conventions. Also, there could be some spelling errors in the data as it is entered manually in most of the cases. For such reasons, the need to find and join similar records instead of exact records is important in order to integrate the data. Most of …

Hallowed Ground: Literature And The Encounter With God In Post-Reformtion England, C. 1550 - 1704, Michael Thomas Martin
Wayne State University Dissertations
This dissertation examines the ways in which the encounter with God is figured in post-Reformation English writing between the years 1550 and 1704. The introduction contextualizes the ways in which individuals might encounter God within cultural and historical circumstances of the period: the gradual disappearance of the tradition of spiritual direction that accompanied the suppression of Catholicism in England during the period and the growing influence of more purely "scientific" modes of inquiry, especially after Descartes. Because of these changes, the ways the encounter with God could be experienced were also changing. The introduction also shows how developments in religious …

Epistemic Communities And Regional Governance: Policy Development In Municipal Finance Reform, Shanthi Karuppusamy
Epistemic Communities And Regional Governance: Policy Development In Municipal Finance Reform, Shanthi Karuppusamy
Wayne State University Dissertations
In recent times, the US has undergone significant changes in how regional governance is conceptualized and the focus has shifted from government to governance and from governmental consolidation to problem solving (Barnes and Foster, 2011). Policy makers' quest for interjurisdictional responses to the financial crisis and the recession has rekindled interest in the topic of regional governance. However, the economic, social and technical changes of the recent decades, which have now assimilated in US urban regions, fundamentally challenge existing dominant ways of thinking about regional governance and call for more useful analytic frameworks (Bollens, 1997; Barnes and Foster, 2011). This …

Investigation Of The Absorptive Potential Of Polymeric Nanoparticles Across The Lungs And Their Development For Efficient Systemic Delivery Following Pulmonary Administration, Abdul Khader Mohammad
Wayne State University Dissertations
The lungs are an attractive route for drug delivery due to their high epithelial surface area available for absorption, a thin epithelium and extensive vasculature to name a few. Accordingly, a vast number of small molecule drugs, peptides, and proteins have been used to investigate their translocation across the lungs with many of the tested candidates showing excellent pharmacokinetics following pulmonary administration. Findings from all these studies over the years have strongly established the lungs as a route for drug delivery of small molecules and proteins. Nanoparticles on the other hand have gained increasing interest in drug delivery due to …
Identification Of Transcriptional Mechanisms Downstream Of Nf1 Gene Defeciency In Malignant Peripheral Nerve Sheath Tumors, Daochun Sun
Wayne State University Dissertations
Malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor (MPNST) is a type of soft tissue sarcoma that occurs in carriers of mutations in the neurofibromatosis type I gene (Nf1) as well as sporadically. Plexiform neurofibromas in NF1 patients have a significant risk of developing into MPNSTs leading to increased morbidity and mortality from this syndrome. Surgery is the primary intervention but it is not always effective due to the tendency of MPNSTs to infiltrate the surrounding tissue or grow in an inoperable location. Neurofibromin, the protein coded by the Nf1 gene, functions as a GTPase activating protein (GAP) whose mutation leads to constitutive …

It is typically associated with increasing age and has a slight male prevalence, with a male to female ratio of approximately 3:2. ALS is classified as either familial (the less …
Examining Autoimmune Sequelae During Cancer Immunotherapy In A Combined Autoimmune Thyroiditis And Tumor Mouse Model, Suresh Kari
Examining Autoimmune Sequelae During Cancer Immunotherapy In A Combined Autoimmune Thyroiditis And Tumor Mouse Model, Suresh Kari
Wayne State University Dissertations
Some clinical trials of immunotherapeutic agents against cancers have resulted in the development of autoimmune sequelae, including autoimmune thyroiditis. It has been suggested that the immunotherapy resulted in an alteration in the immunoregulatory mechanism(s). Using experimental autoimmune thyroiditis (EAT), a mouse model of Hashimoto's thyroiditis (HT), the importance of regulatory T cells (Tregs) has been well established; inhibition of Tregs leads to enhanced thyroiditis with repeated doses of mouse thyroglobulin (mTg) without adjuvant. To simulate cancer patients, we developed a combined EAT and tumor model in our EAT-susceptible mice (CBA/J). In first establishing the tumor model, we found Treg depletion …
Multifunctional Bioreducible Nanoparticles For Gene Therapy, Jing Li
Multifunctional Bioreducible Nanoparticles For Gene Therapy, Jing Li
Wayne State University Dissertations
Gene therapy is a promising therapeutic strategy to treat diseases caused by single or multiple gene mutations. Non-viral gene delivery vectors exhibit many advantages over viral vectors, including enhanced safety, versatility in choosing different types of therapeutic nucleic acids, and ease of formulation. However, low transgene efficiency and lack of targeting ability remain major challenges. Bioreducible polyplexes (polyelectrolyte complexes of disulfide-containing polycations and nucleic acids) utilize the redox potential gradient existing between extracellular space and intracellular environment as a physiological stimulus to enhance delivery of therapeutic nucleic acids to the subcellular space. Bioreducible containing polyplexes undergo intracellular reduction mediated GSH, …
A Multi-Agent Intelligent System For Detecting Unknown Adverse Drug Reactions Through Communication And Collaboration, Ayman Mohammad Mansour
A Multi-Agent Intelligent System For Detecting Unknown Adverse Drug Reactions Through Communication And Collaboration, Ayman Mohammad Mansour
Wayne State University Dissertations
Several thousands of drugs are currently available on the U.S. market. A complete understanding of the safe use of drugs is not possible at the time when drug is developed or marketed. At that time, the safety information is only obtained from a few thousand people in a typical pre-marketing clinical trial. Clinical trials are not capable of detecting rare adverse drug reactions (ADRs) because of limitations in sample size and trial duration. Early detection of unknown ADRs could save lives and prevent unnecessary hospitalizations. Current methods largely rely on spontaneous reports which suffer from serious underreporting, latency, and inconsistent …
Systems Support For Genomics Computing In Cloud Environments, Tung Thanh Nguyen
Systems Support For Genomics Computing In Cloud Environments, Tung Thanh Nguyen

Genomics research has enormous applications in many areas such as health care, forensic, agriculture, etc. Most recent achievements in this field come from the availability of the unprecedented genomic data. However, new sequencing technologies in genomics keep producing data at a faster pace resulting a very huge amount of data. This poses great challenges on how to store, manage, process and analyze the data efficiently. To deal with these, genomics research groups often equip themselves with a small scale server room composed of high storage capacity and computing ability machines. This solution is not only costly, unscalable but also inefficient. …
Role Of Thromboxane Receptor-Alpha In Prostate Cancer Progression, Prasanna Ekambaram
Role Of Thromboxane Receptor-Alpha In Prostate Cancer Progression, Prasanna Ekambaram
Wayne State University Dissertations
Thromboxane A2 (TXA2) is a major arachidonic acid metabolite that signals through TXA2 receptors (TP) to induce platelet aggregation and smooth muscle contraction. TXA2 receptors are expressed as two different isoforms in humans, namely TP-alpha (TPα) and TP-beta (TPβ), which have common and distinct signaling pathways. Of the two TP receptor isoforms, studies have shown that TPα impacts tumor growth and progression of lung cancer. Previously our studies demonstrated that activation of Thromboxane receptor by TXA2 agonists could regulate prostate cancer (PCa) cell motility and cytoskeletal reorganization through activation of Rho-A. The primary objective of this study is to investigate …
Membrane-Bound Immunomodulators As Adjuvants In A Cell Culture-Based Avian Influenza Vaccine, David Daniel Fischer
Membrane-Bound Immunomodulators As Adjuvants In A Cell Culture-Based Avian Influenza Vaccine, David Daniel Fischer
Wayne State University Dissertations
Inactivated viral vaccines often generate suboptimal immune responses. Adjuvants are incorporated into vaccines to increase their immunogenicity, however currently available adjuvants have shortcomings which have limited their use in human and veterinary medicine. This necessitates the development of new adjuvants and delivery systems. Cytokines have been extensively tested as adjuvants in vaccines but challenges such as diffusion from antigen, short half-lives and production costs have been encountered. To address this, we developed a technology that efficiently produces inactivated, whole-virus influenza vaccine bearing membrane-bound cytokines. Tethering the cytokine to the antigen of interest keeps the immunomodulator in close contact with the …
